"The Hardest Part" is scheduled to be the fourth single from Coldplay's 2005 album, X&Y. On 15 February 2006, Coldplay.com confirmed that "The Hardest Part" will be the fourth single. BBC Radio 1 reported that the single will be released on 3 April 2006.

A report on the program "Escenario" from CNN Latin America stated in late January 2006 that "White Shadows" was planned to be the fourth single.

The music video for "The Hardest Part" was shot on March 3, 2006 in St Petersburg, Florida at a yacht marina. A family member of a band member will make a cameo in the video. It will premiere on Wednesday 22nd March at 11:05 on Channel 4 in the UK.
