worth reading in my opinion:

Atonement - Ian McEwan
Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story - Leonie Swann
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey
Oscar and the Lady in Pink - Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt
Marley and Me - John Grogan
Hennig Mankell's criminals

I forgot to mention One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, that book is really good! Read it in my HS psychology class.

I recommend some of Ayn Rand's books, like The Fountainhead and Anthem.

The Fountainhead is amazing too, but I found it a bit boring at some parts

Those two are standouts for me, and I usually don't like books, so that must mean they're pretty good.

I've read both of those in school as well and enjoyed both of them. I think "The Great Gatsby" took a little bit more effort to get into, but that's alright.

"Frankenstein" in particular is SO much better in book form than it is in movie format. The tone is much darker. The other two are just fine as well.

YES YES YES. The book is ten times better than the movie, and I'm a huge fan of the movie. My brother (who hates reading) even said it's probably the best book he has ever read. Please check it out.

I've never read The Fountainhead, but I'll vouch for Anthem.

Okey-dokey. You won't be disappointed if you do start to read Anthem.

When I said "I'll vouch for Anthem," I was agreeing with you. I've read Anthem more than several times over.

Many nice recommandations already

Maybe add The Boys From Brazil? and Lord of the Flies (yes, not of the rings )
Also the Edda
and since several people said a Son of Ice and Fire, personally I prefer the book series that influenced that one: The Dragonbone Chair (Tad Williams)

I agree, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is probably one of the best books ever written...
These are nice too:
The Catcher In The Rye
Kafka On The Shore
After Dark

The past participle is "read". I'm sorry, I just couldn't help it.
Back on topic - Oscar Wilde - "The Picture of Dorian Gray"

Sorry, I wasn't sure which one is the right past participle for that verb, so I looked on the Internet and I found that it could be both read and readen. Readen is dialect and archaic English though.
I'm not a native speaker, so if I'm wrong, I'm sorry.
