When do you use ma and when do you use mon?
Is ma for feminine and mon for masculine?
Or is it for words starting with vowels and not?

I think I did okay, apparently I said "j'ai" instead of "je" once.
But I did everything else pretty well.
And my teacher told me I got one of the highest marks on the written french exam.

You are quite right: "Ma" is for feminine (ma mère), and "mon" is for masculine (mon père) AND for words starting with vowels (mon amie - for my (girl)friend, and mon ami (without an "e" in the end) for my (boy)friend.

And congratulations for getting one of the highest marks on the written French exam.

It's a little weird when somebody, not french, shows some grammar things about your language that you never even noticed ^^ GG, nancy ! Many people say that people coming from Germanic countrys are really good in "foreign languages" (is that correct ?). Well, here's obviously another proof.
