Obviously a live song that makes it to YouTube or something before it officially comes out is not the same as an official leak, but at the same time, it could work against them in a worst-case scenario: if the material doesn't go over that well and a lot of people see it via YouTube etc, it could mean lower album sales. Some people may be attracted by free live previews of tracks, but some people could also be just as uninterested or turned off by the same thing, and this is Coldplay, mega-stars and cash cow, not just any band. That's a really paranoid way of looking at it, but since EMI are hurting these days, they might be thinking like that . Just an idea, probably not a realistic one.

I still think May/June

I see your point but look at what Kings of Leon did last summer! They played (against their label advice) a lot of songs from their forcoming album during shows in the summer. The album came out in the following october and hit number 1, despite all the live leaked flowing on youtube...
I find it very clever cause people know the songs a little before buying the album and are even more eager to purchase it to listen to the studio version (at least, it worked like that on me )

anywyay, we'll see!!

That's actually a very good example...hmmm. I guess I'm just trying to think of EMI's perspective, but I suppose if there's nothing about such things in their contract, they can only advise them against playing new stuff. Kings of Leon, though, while big and popular, aren't Coldplay, and their record companies aren't sinking down the tubes as fast as EMI...

I think it's clever too as long as the music's good and gets good press and doesn't alienate new and casual listeners for any reason. Because it's Coldplay, one of the top maybe 3 most popular acts in the world right now, the risk of the material not coming off well is probably small.

So my guess is september

Did they ever do something like this before? Announcing 9 festivals gigs just for testing material? Or any other band? Jeez Christ.

A lot of artists are testing new songs on stage...Coldplay did it before AROBTH. As for a proper testing songs tour, there is a french singer that did it and it was ace! After the show, we were asked to go to his website and make comments on the songs, what we like/don't like and why. A few months later, he came back with the album

May 23 would be a good day. There is a doomsday religous groop that predicts that the woule will end on May 22. All of us survivors need something good to listen to.

A lot of artists are releasing new material during tours, but it doesn't mean they are "testing" it. And you should see things in the whole perspective. Guys has been recording new album over 2 years, they have already played (tested) at least 2 new songs.

And why the hell they would announced 9 gigs after 2 years of recording just for testing? It doesn't make any sense at all.

During release of a new album they have to do shitload of promotional stuff like interviews, radio, video appearances, free gigs, hidden gigs, family gigs, bbc gigs. There are no time for testing. A couple of month prior to release all studio masters must be done and went to factory. The schedule for gigs so tight it could mean only new tour.

I think the only reason they wouldn't play new material at the festivals if the album doesn't come out before then is because EMI will have something to say about it (or the band just doesn't want to). But to book that many gigs to just play the same songs they just got off the road playing wouldn't be right. So it's just a question of whether the album comes out before or after.

I don't really think they'd "test" anything at the festivals like that French singer mentioned above, I think they'd just premiere them and then come out with the album in August or so once they settle back down and have time to go back and do all the promotional stuff. At the same time, though, these guys are Coldplay and can kind of reinvent album promotion if they really want and postpone a lot of the video/special gig stuff. Since they're still under EMI, they probably have to play by the rules a bit, though. I just think it sounds like it's going to be out before they get rolling live, probably in early June like their last two albums, right before the first festival on June 11. VLV worked in a similar way: they had a few gigs, the free ones, sprinkled throughout that June right after the release, and did promo stuff etc. in between them. Their June and July look very similar this coming year, with the few festivals scattered around with space between to get other promotional things done.

I'm saying potentially mid-year... May or June seem likely to me.

I mean, yeah, they've booked a lot of Festivals for the summer and to me, it seems odd not to have the new material released before then. I would imagine it would be the first airings of the new album tracks live before they actually went on tour.

As pointed out, it's not unheard of for bands to play new material before release (even against advise of the record company/management) but in most cases (like KoL) they were at their own concerts. I doubt you'd preview new material at a Festival considering it's more of a platform to play 'latest album mixed with the back-catalogue classics'.

Well I just don't get some odd points and want everyone to be optimistic. If they knew they will came on festivals with new material 6-7 month prior to date, it means this material has been done or in the final phase, so why they can't in this case release album before? It's pretty logical to me.

I voted May. With the festivals starting in early June I'm guessing/hoping the album will be released early May (giving them about a month to start rehearsing the new songs). That would hopefully mean the first single would be released early April.
