A few thoughts on Rock in Rio from a Brit abroad in Brazil

It’ been great this last week living in São Paulo and being able to watch Rock in Rio every night. This is I think the world’s biggest rock festival, spanning a whole week, with around 100,000 people in the audience each night, and with a television audience of millions.

The festival kicked-off last week with a much publicised set by Katy Perry. This for me was quite embarrassing, as she shouted her songs and shouted at the audience in-between. Her songs do not really translate well to live performance, as the vocals to me seem extremely processed on the recordings, and they become tuneless in a live context.

Despite this being a concert that gives western artists phenomenal exposure not just in Brazil, but Latin America, you would think that they would at least maybe learn the most basic of simple Portuguese phrases such as “Good evening Rio!” (Boa noite Rio) and “thankyou!” (Obrigado/obrigada).

But no, not one single word of Portuguese from these superstars.

Things got a little better with Brits Elton John, and Jay Kay, the lead singer of Jamiroquai, as I am sure I head “obrigado” a few times, although a little mangled in their Estuary-English accents.

It was only when we got to one of the headline acts, Coldplay, that we really heard a little more Portuguese, with Chris Martin asking the crowd “Everyone Ok at the back, on the left, on the right, at the front?” in Portuguese. Both Coldplay and Maroon 5 who had proceeded them brought on Brazilian flags which was great to see, with Martin also painting “Ri♡” on the wall to the left of the stage, much to the crowd’s delight.

What is noticeable from a British perspective is how all the headline acts each night were either British or American. Brazil is a hotbed of creative musical talent, but it seems that foreign acts, and basically English-speaking acts are far more highly regarded than acts from their own country. I went to see top rock band Skank a couple of weeks ago in São Paulo, and I can assure that they totally rocked the house with a passionate crowd. They were playing last night too, but were on just at 8pm, before the final Brazilian band Maná. This would never happen back in the UK!

Today I was searching for reviews of the Coldplay gig to show some students of mine, but all I could find was one paragraph from The Sun about Martin’s grafitti antics. What a shame that there has been so little international press coverage of this phenomenal festival. When you move to Brazil it is quite amazing to discover so much amazing art, music and culture that simply has no exposure whatsoever. Perhaps times are changing though? With Brazil now really coming to prominence in the new economic realities we are facing, maybe it is now time for Brazil to come to the attention of the world not just for the fact that it has natural resources and riches to be exploited, but that it has so much culture and art for the rest of the world to discover and learn from too.

Apologies, the next one is courtesy of google translate!

Chris Martin of Coldplay, wants to come to the Rio Carnival

If you have not been squeezed in among the crowd at Rock in Rio to watch the concert of Coldplay, here goes a tip for those who hope to run into, as nonchalantly in darling Chris Martin, lead singer of the band.

Minutes before going on stage, the husband of Gwyneth Paltrow, and another between a dose of vodka, chatted exclusively with the column and said he intends to return to Brazil to watch the parades during Carnival in Rio

If you do not have contact with the organizers of the Sapucaí cabins, will be moving.
Otherwise, you will have to give the good fortune to bump into the young man in a street in the southern Rio de Janeiro. The singer paraded handsome blue eyes by Ipanema hours before performing at Rock City. Acai took - or even import the fruit to London - was delighted to see the sunset behind the Morro Dois Irmãos and returned to the hotel free, light and loose from the paparazzi.

But who was none too squeezed - but nothing at all - during the show was the Rio Mariana Feijó, 20, who lives in Niterói. She who was the winner of a promotion of Heineken and competed with other 500 000 fans to see the British group, began early Sunday along with the band. And with the right to know the idol Chris Martin backstage, take pictures, get autographs and have their greatest dream also attended by the singer: he wrote a special role in the title of one of the best-known songs, "Viva La Vida." The reason? "I'll turn this original made in his handwriting in a tattoo on the belly," she says, thrilled, repeating all the time he was in alpha.

What's more, when he was saying goodbye, Chris turned around and asked an aide invited the fan and her boyfriend, Thiago Reis, to watch the show in a corner on stage. At this point, the girl looked angry and started crying with emotion. This column was astute and followed it along on the spot.

. “Não acreditooooo!”, exclamava a sortuda.

Backstage, she soon made friends with Ben Johnson, the group's sound technician. In the middle of the show, shouting and singing by Chris compulsively to-the songs, Ben explained how it worked some equipment and gave her a guitar pick used by guitarist Jonny Buckland, and a copy of the setlist of the show. "They are relics that will keep for the rest of my life," she said. Before returning to the stage for the encore, Martin picked up the gift that Mariana had given him - a flag of Brazil - and ended the show embraced the pampering"There acreditooooo!" Exclaimed the lucky one.

We used to beat a chat with Chris. Previously, a single application of production: nothing to speak of personal life. Read up Gwyneth Paltrow.

O que achou de participar do Rock in Rio?
Adorei tudo. Me surpreendi com o tamanho disso tudo.

What did you think of participating in the Rock in Rio?
I loved everything. The event is very well organized structure and leaves nothing due to the major music festivals around the world. I was surprised by the size of it.

Conseguiu aproveitar a cidade?

He managed to enjoy the city?
Until they do, but I want to return quietly to see the Carnival. I took a walk around Ipanema accompanied by Will (Champion, drummer), we saw a spectacular sunset and make a delicious juice, burgundy, I do not remember the name in a cafeteria.

It would not be açaí?
Exactly, that one. I have never experienced, is not very pretty sight, but it is delicious. I even asked to bring a few drinks for us. The whole band liked it and agreed to ask where possible in our dressing room. Do you know if I can find it in London?

Oh yeah! Brazilian fans were fantastic. I travelled from Argentina to Rio only to see Coldplay and there I met Sarah, Paula and beautiful people (I don't remember all their names but Livia and Mary are some of them) and they all were nice to my and my friends. They were so kind, and once ine concert everybody showed respect and happiness while coldplay was on stage. They made the guys feel comfortable and warm. From one fan to the other: Thanks Brazilian people for making them feel like that! I jumped and sang till my my throat hurted. Literally.

I've reposted below without the colour tags for the benefit of those on the Brothers & sisters skin (like me!) as the text doesn't show up

So, I went to Rio on Thursday (29th) and all I wanted was to sleep properly coz I knew It wouldn’t be easy to do all that I wanted to in this crazy weekend I had ahead of me. So I did it, and Friday afternoon I was feeling ready for the battle. =) I say that cause here in Brazil the lines start really early, people are hardcore when it comes to this kind of concerts, and everyone were really over-excited for this one in particular.

So, we know that Coldplay always stay in this one hotel, so all the coldplayers settled a meeting there to see if we could meet with band, get some pictures/autographs and such. Some of them got there Friday (30th) right after lunch, but I only managed to do so at 4pm. When I got there they said to me that they’ve seen Phill and that he said that maybe the band would come down later, and as they were saying it Chris and Jonny started to wave to us in the window and everyone got really excited and some of us started to sing every Coldplay song we could think of (especially the oldies) then, after some time we started to sing Paradise and Miller (Roadie #42) showed in the balcony and started taking pictures of us, then he came downstairs and asked us if we could sing it again and filmed the whole thing (so, maybe he’ll post it in coldplay.com ).

After that we saw Franksy and Dan Portainer in the hotel bar and they took pictures of us But the time passed and our guys were still inside in the middle of a bunch of interviews… Finally after hours of waiting Kelly came downstairs and we knew the time was coming! There were barriers so we were in a long line in front of the hotel entrance. Jonny boy came out, took pictures and signed things to a amazed crowd. He is a very sweet guy, so caring and smiling all the time And thank God for that coz I had a mission: I wanted to get something signed by him to Ellen for her wedding

When he came closer to me I told him that I had a friend that loved him very much and she wanst there coz she was getting married in the next day, so he wrote a message to her: “Ellen, congrats on your marriage! Love, Jonny from Coldplay”. After that I told him that I loved how he combined so many different riffs in Hurst like Heaven and he gave me the most beautifull smile and thanked me. Then it was time for Will, and he was even kinder that Jonny He signed ALL of my stuff (it was a lot of CD’s, singles, and such) and asked me what was my favorite song and I said Such a Rush and he said “oh my, that’s an old one!” and I said that I was loving the drum part of ETIAW and he said thanks. Then we took a picture and he thanked us all for waiting for so long and for going to concert, he asked if we were the ones singing ealier and we said yes and he said that they really liked to hear us and all I could think of were “but we were singing terrible

Chis was next, and it all became a blur, coz everyone got even more thrilled and we couldn’t even hear his voice! But he still signed a lot of stuff and took some pictures, and in a minute he was back inside

After that we went home, ate, took a shower and got in the line at 3am And we weren’t the first ones!! There were aprox. 10 in the line for a week or so . The place was huge, crowded and confusing cause there were people leaving from Friday’s concert, so we went looking for Mel, Laura and the girls from Argentina, cause we were afraid they might get lost in that mess. We found then so we talked and talked until the morning… more of our friends arrived (Paula, Livia and Cris) and at 7:30 we started to hear some noises from the stage (that was really, really, really far from the line) and Paula, Livia and I started to run to some place where we could hear it properly. As we were running the sound became clear and it was ETIAW!! we found the “staff entrance” and got in We were still far from the stage, but we could see Chris in his piano, Will stretching his arms and Guy sitting in one of those big black instrument boxes after some time they played a song we couldn’t recognize and then Guy played some bits of the Midnight Cowboy theme (his favorite song according to NME) but some people from security saw us and told us to leave the place but after that we didn’t hear nothing more...

At 2pm we “run for our lives” to get to the front row and we got there! Livia and I were between Chris’ and Guy’s places, a very good place to be but it was very, very hot and we had to stand there in the sun until the end of the concert or lose the spot… From 2pm until aprox. 1am when the concert started. Most of our friends couldn’t stand the heat and the exhaustion of standing in the sun with 100,000 people pushing you, without even going to the bathroom... Lots of fans passed out, even Melissa and Laura had to go to back of the crowd... But they're fine now, Thank God

It was hard to breath, my legs were killing me, but everytime I thought of giving up the front row I looked to Chris' piano in a corner of the satge and the amount of time I waited to see this concert, so with the help of Livia and your Coldplay Karma, I made it!

When 99 ploblems started to play it was like non of this were happening, I got my strenght back! MX/Hurts like Heaven is even better live than I imagined. Oh my, Jonny's riffs, I'm so amazed by the way he makes so many different riffs sound so in harmony, you know... and the energy of this song its just the best way to get the crowd in the mood for the concert! Then it was time for the good and old Yellow and the crowd just went insane, my God, they were jumping, and singing. During In My Place it was even better! And, as if he had to do any other thing to catch our attention, Chris got a spray can and wrote Ri<3 (a heart in the place of the 'o') in the stage!!

And Major Minus was a surprise for me, cause didnt liked it that much, but it seriously is something else when you're singing and jumping, and Guy was seriously enjoying it! When Paradise started everyone was singing and I knew that the front row was really full of coldplayers <3 and we could see that they were astonished with us singing it, it was amazing! This song is much better live indeed. The highlight of concert for me was God put a simle. I know it is an old song, but Jesus, the way they play it now.... is just pure awesomness!! They start it slowly, then accelerate it, then rock it! I loved it!

Another time I got really stunned was when Charlie Brown started, Holy shit, I jumped and screamed and sang it, and basically got inse so much that Chris looked straight to my friends and I and waved

And I went crazy during ETIAW too I started to move my arms, dance, I dont know how I managed to move so much when it was so crowded hahahahaha, but then it was over and I just sat in the ground, I couldnt move! But it wasnt for long, cause people were practically jumping in my feet. So I got up and all of a sudden someone gave me a paper and when I looked at it, IT WAS THE SETLIST!!!! I couldnt believe my luck, seriously.

The other day I woke up and went to their hotel again cause I waned to get the setlist signed And after some waiting They came out and talked to us, but this time it was even faster, cause there were lots of people there... Jonny, Guy and Chris signed my setlist but Will went straight to the car (they were leaving the hotel) so I saw Phill and asked him to sign the setlist and take it to Will for him to sign it too, AND HE DID. Phill is the nicest guy I've ever met, seriously!

O motivo? “Vou transformar esse original feito com a letra dele em uma tatuagem na barriga”, conta ela, animadíssima, repetindo o tempo todo que estava em alfa.

But who was not too squeezed - but nothing at all - during the show was Mariana Feijó, 20, who lives in Niterói. She was the winner of a promotion of Heineken and competed with other 500 000 fans to see the British group. She spent early Sunday with the band. And (because she won the competition) she had the right to meet her idol Chris Martin backstage, take pictures, get autographs and have her greatest dream come true realized by the singer: he wrote in a special paper the title of one of their best-known songs, "Viva La Vida." The reason? "I'll turn this original made by his handwriting in a tattoo on my belly," she says, thrilled, repeating all the time she was in alpha.

What's more, when he was saying goodbye, Chris turned around and invited the fan and her boyfriend, Thiago Reis, to watch the show in a corner of the stage. At this point, the girl looked like she couldn't believe it and started crying with emotion. This newspaper/magazine was astute and followed her to the spot.

. “Não acreditooooo!”, exclamava a sortuda.

Backstage, she soon become friends with Ben Johnson, the group's sound technician. In the middle of the show, as she was shouting and singing "Chris" compulsively to-the songs, Ben explained how some equipment worked and gave her a guitar pick used by guitarist Jonny Buckland, and a copy of the setlist of the show. "These are relics that I will keep for the rest of my life," she said. Before returning to the stage for the encore, Martin picked up the gift that Mariana had given him - a flag of Brazil - and ended the show embraced to it. "I can't believeeee it!" Exclaimed the lucky one.

We had a chat with Chris. Previously, a single request from the production: no questions about personal life. Meaning: about Gwyneth Paltrow.

O que achou de participar do Rock in Rio?
Adorei tudo. Me surpreendi com o tamanho disso tudo.

What did you think of participating in the Rock in Rio?
I loved everything. The event is very well organized and the structure is as good as the major music festivals around the world. I was surprised by the size of it.

Conseguiu aproveitar a cidade?

Did you manage to enjoy the city?
I actually did, but I want to return quietly to see the Carnival. I took a walk around Ipanema accompanied by Will (Champion, drummer), we saw a spectacular sunset and drank a delicious juice, wine coloured, I do not remember the name, in a cafeteria.

Would that be açaí?
Exactly, that one. I have never tried it, it is not very pretty at sight, but it is delicious. I even asked to bring a few more for us. The whole band liked it and we agreed to ask it whenever possible in our dressing rooms. Do you know if I can find it in London?

They were playing last night too, but were on just at 8pm, before the final Brazilian band Maná. This would never happen back in the UK!

Just a small correction, Jenjie: Maná is not a brazilian band, they're mexican!

Well, here's my review

I arrived with my friends (Mel, Romi, Jime and Lili) to Rio on Friday morning very early and we headed directly to their hotel where we were going to meet Paula and all the other Brazilian fans. We met them and we were so happy to finally meet them, especially Paula (Paulinha coldplay) who did a lot for us. We'll be forever grateful to her! After a while there, Phil came out and we talked to him- we told him we had flown from Argentina just to see Coldplay and he said "Argentina! Oh, I lived there for a while, did you know?" "yeah, we did " "you did?" and he signed my journal and our flag and he took our presents for the guys and promised to give them to them.
Later, more coldplayers arrived including Sarah, who was super friendly and lovely to us! I couldn't wait to meet her and I'm so happy that I did! Brazilian Colplayers sing beautifuly! Everyone outside started singing and Chris and Jonny waved to us from the balcony . A few hours later, after a long wait, Chris, Jonny and Will decided to come out and say hi to us. I couldn't believe it! They had done that whe they came to Argentina, but I had to work and I missed it so I couldn't believe it was finally happening! They were all super patient and kind to us! They all signed my journal and I took a photo with Will (he took it himself, making sure the pic was alright before moving on to the next person ) and with Chris!
Then at 2 am we went to queue for the gig, there were lots of people coming out from the place and we couldn't find Sarah and the guys at first but then we did and everything was alright. We spent the night there and the whole day. It was very hot and the places to get food were really far away from were we were. However, we all had an amazing time together. Then at 2pm, everything started. I had never run so much for something I wanted in my life, I swear. We made it with Mel to the third row, but we were exahusted, the heat was suffocating and the sun was shining brightly above us..and we had 11 hours ahead of us of waiting Well, a few hours later, I passed out and after I was released from the nurses, we found another spot, it was quite early still so we managed to move quite near, but not near as good as before, but from there we were able to enjoy the show and see them quite close.
The gig blew me away, it was fantastic, they were happy to be there, you could see it. Not that they weren't at any other place but you could see playing there was sort of "special". and the crowd was amazing! During yellow everyone had their yellow balloons and we had also glowsticks for ETIAW and people were truly enjoying it. Singing, dancing, moving and jumping. I had the best time ever! The sound was really good and the guys were flawless, even Chris' fuck up was funny. Jonny was rocking out like never before, or so it seemed, it was truly an amazing performance. After the gig, we had to rush back to the hostel to collect our things cause we had to catch our flight at 6:30 back to Buenos Aires-many people from the Coldplay crew boarded the same flight don't know why, I guess they flew to South Africa from Buenos Aires? Anyways, it was the best experience ever! I'm so happy! Here are some pics:
