Default What labels should do....

I think it would be well worth a label's money to pay people to go onto message forums and promote bands.
For example I know there are a handful of members on here who are fairly influential as far as recommending bands and people listening to them and liking them.
If you did that on numerous message boards I'm sure you could increase album sales and ticket sales as well.
Thoughts?
Would that be ethical?

I think it'd be a great idea.

I as well as many others have introduced bands to the forum and people have gotten into bands because of it, which ultimately would lead to more album/ticket sales. If people were paid to do this it'd both benefit the artists/labels and also the fans too (that want to make some money).

I just wonder if they did this how would they be able to monitor.

Yeah not sure. You could use links and see how many times people click them.
But its like if you put an ad in a music magazine, hard to tell what people have purchased an album/ticket just because of that ad.

^You could have specific links that are posted and could purchase albums/tickets via that link or just the number of times that link is clicked.

I kind of like this idea. Similar to street teams. You know, "if you give people these flyers I'll give you free tickets to this show" or whatever.

I practically already do this on here for NZ bands.

it'll be a good idea.
but the fact that a person/user is influential in a board it doesn't mean it'll work on another one.

i mean, for instance you like muse, you think you'll convince a jazz board to like them?
i doubt it.

It would have to be very strategic.

then it'll probably work.
but if the plan is just to post on a board to promote a band, like with direct links, may some strict board will find that user a spammer and so band their account or unable the link.

Yeah, I think it would be smarter to "mine" out influential people on forums and hire them.
For example if somebody were to creep on Coldplaying for a week they could easily figure out who are the influential members music wise, contact them, offer them free albums etc. in exchange for making a thread about band X.

I think that it should be done.

I guess essentially I am doing that somewhat with my blog in terms of having bands and labels send me albums and me reviewing them.

The problem with record labels sending people free stuff to review is that the reviewers generally will give the albums overly positive reviews to keep the free stuff rolling, say something bad and the label might just break you away.

Thus the truly independent blogs and the most trusted reviewers receive no such freebies from record labels to avoid bias towards said record label/band

I tend to just review stuff I like as a rule of thumb. And criticize when needed.

It sounds like they would be spambots though.
