What will Coldplay do when they rule the world?

There was a time when you could measure someone’s star by the amount of column inches written about them or the number of times they were on telly … but in an age where anyone prepared to drop their trousers (metaphorically or physically) can be a tabloid darling or get eight series of an ob-doc commissioned to follow them around their fake-Tudor mansion in Goff’s Oak, it’s all got a bit more complicated.

Enter the good people at Famecount – they’ve devised a new way of measuring celebrity-ness (which uses the Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, yeah it’s the future don’t you know) to sort the Eddie Izzard’s from the Jack Tweed’s using the ultimate Internet star President Barack Obama as the golden goose at the top of the pops.

So how does all this work then? Well the Famecount Index takes into account the amount of Twittter followers, official Facebook fans and Youtube channel viewers each celebrity has and then uses a (presumably complex) algorithm to determine each star’s rating out of 100 (the technical maximum based on the most social media stalked man on the planet, the President of the USA (Barack Obama, not the band.)

With all the numbers in the machine, it turn out Coldplay are the most famous name in Britain (12th in the world, behind the likes of Lady GaGa, Michael Jackson and Britney Spears), scoring a 57.9% fame ranking based on 3.8m Facebook fans, 2.7m Twitter followers and 71,000 Youtube subscribers (I wonder how many of them were just looking for a ripping recipe for lentil soup?)
Second ... it comes right after first!

In second place is Lily Allen on 31.3% famous, ahead of the BBC and 10 Downing Street which scored 25.7% and 22.9% respectively.
Other big hitters to make it into the top ten include Twitterholics Ediie Izzard (21.7% famous) and Stephen Fry (20.1%) who’s in a dead heat for social media celebration with Samantha Ronson.

The most ‘famous businessman’ is not as some might suspect Alan Sugar, but in fact perennial favourite Richard Branson (4.8 out of Obama.) The reality TV category was topped by Susan Boyle (91.9% less famous than the Prez), Liverpool are the most famous football club (8.2%) and just to confirm that Brits are chavs, Burberry topped the fashion fame count with 6 per cent.

Although established stars dominate the top ten with their phenomenal Twitter and Facebook followings, the research has revealed that Youtube remains the place to make a name for yourself, with a plethora of (previously) unknown stars getting the big subscriptions. If you haven’t already seen them, take a look at some emerging stars in the shape of charlieissocoollike, panacea81, bubzbeauty and simonscat – all of whom have very healthy six figure subscription lists.

Daniel Dearlove, founder of Famecount said: “We can identify not simply who are the most famous, but which stars are embracing social media and using it most effectively – and thereby attracting the most online fans. Interestingly some of the biggest U.K. stars, particularly on YouTube, have built their fame entirely online. As the success of Canadian star Justin Bieber shows, it is no longer simply a case of existing celebrity transferring onto social media channels. If the content is good enough, then the Web could well start to become a more regular birthplace for emerging stars.”
