Default What a world we're living in - cartoonist attacked in his home!

What a world we are living in!

In 2005 Kurt Westergaard, a Danish cartoonist depicted the prophet Muhammed with a bomb in his turban for a major Danish newspaper. That led to violent protests in the Middle-East and throughout the Moslem / islamic world and to boycott of Danish goods. Threats were uttered against the cartoonist and the newspaper. Yesterday evening = on 1 January, 2010 Kurt Westergaard was at home looking after his 5-year-old grandchild - a girl - while her parents were out. He heard that someone broke into his house by smashing a window. He had a panick room in his home and went in there and locked the door thinking that the unknown person would not harm his granddaughter. The person found the panick room and tried - without success - to get in there by using an axe. Then he shouted bad words and that he would come back again! Luckily the intruder did not assault the granddaughter, but left the house. Kurt Westergaard had pushed the button to alarm the police that came within three minutes of having received the alarm signal. The unknown person was armed with an axe and a knife and was met by police. The intruder was swinging his axe into one police car and tried to smash a window of the car - without success. Then he threw his axe against one policeman. It luckily flew past the policeman who chose to shoot the intruder in one hand and in one knee. The intruder turned out to be a 28-year-old Somali suspected by the police and the Danish intelligence service of being linked to the radical Islamic al-Shabab militia. At midnight the police questioned the cartoonist after the grandchild was returned to her parents. I followed the news through most of the night. Today the intruder was questioned by the police, but pleaded not guilty. The press was excluded from the court room, but it was revealed that the intruder pleaded not guilty, and that he will be in custody until 27 January.
EDIT: The granddaughter will also be questioned as an important witness - her version will be recorded on video.

Well that's religious fanatics for you. The world could definitely do without them.

Wrong section to this thread.. I think it belongs at News and sport something..
But you are right.. That is too crazy, something we should only see in an action movie
- not real life ..and It is allright to think the drawings was wrong to do, but don't
go so far that you attack the drawer and police for it!!!

Those wedding bells are ringing up upon that hill
I don't want to swallow such a bitter pill
You keep moving baby, I stay still
I always loved you and I always will
La La La La, La La La La
.. and everything that went before doesn't matter
La La La La, La La La La
I always loved you and I always will

My suggestion to a continuation:
Those wedding bells are ringing, but baby I stay
Sadly you and me just got so far away
Oh, though our time is back in the past
my love for you dear, it will always last
La La La La..

Those wedding bells are ringing, and baby you go
Honey, I'll still stay here as you left me so
I will stay and look back to the start
You will always have a place in my heart
La La La La...

Those wedding bells are ringing, babe I hear the tweet
The sound of them makes me feel so bittersweet
Your feet will move while I stay in place
My love for you dear, it's a living space
La La La La..

Exactly. The response was totally disproportionate.

Axe-wielding man charged with attempted murder after breaking into home of Danish 'Mohammed' cartoonist

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 2:50 PM on 02nd January 2010

A Somalian man was today charged with attempted murder after breaking into the house of a controversial cartoonist in Denmark.
The 28-year-old smashed a window to get into Kurt Westergaard's home last night, forcing him to take refuge in a safe room.
Officers arrived at the property in Aarhus within minutes to find the man with 'an axe and a knife in either hand' and shot him in the knee and on his left arm.
The Somalian was carried into court on a stretcher where he was charged with two counts of attempted murder relating to Westergaard and a police officer.

Wounded: The Somalian was carried into court on a stretcher and charged with two counts of attempted murder

Westergaard, 75, sparked outrage in 2005 when he drew a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed with a bomb-shaped turban.
He was one of the 12 cartoonists commissioned by the Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper to produce caricatures of the Muslim prophet.
Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.
Muslims were particularly incensed by Westergaard's cartoon, which portrayed Mohammed with a bomb in his turban and was seen as extending the caricature of Muslims as terrorists. The images sparked protests and outrage across the globe.

Controversial: Kurt Westergaard has become a target for extremists since drawing a satirical picture of the Prophet Mohammed

Westergaard's five-year-old granddaughter was staying in the house at the time of the attack.

They sought shelter in a panic room when they heard the suspect breaking in, Preben Nielsen from the Aarhus police said.
Jakob Scharf, head of Denmark's intelligence agency, said the attack was 'terror related'.
According to Danish intelligence, he has 'close relations to the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab and al-Qaida leaders in eastern Africa,' Scharf said.
He is suspected of involvement in terror-related activities in east Africa and had been under surveillance, although not in connection with Westergaard, he added.

Safe: The cartoonist and his granddaughter, who was staying the night, were unharmed in the attack

The man had a residency permit for Denmark. He is expected to be charged for attempted murder of Westergaard and a police officer.

It was unclear whether the suspect actually managed to get inside the home of the cartoonist in Denmark's second largest city, 125 miles northwest of Copenhagen.
Westergaard he told his employer, the Jyllands-Posten daily, that the assailant shouted 'revenge' and 'blood' as he tried to enter the room where he was hiding.
'My grandchild did fine. It was scary. It was close. Really close. But we did it,' he said.
An umbrella organization for moderate Muslims in Denmark condemned the attack.
"The Danish Muslim Union strongly distances itself from the attack and any kind of extremism that leads to such acts," the group said in a statement.
Target: Police outside Westergaard's home in Aarhus last night after a Somali man armed with an axe and a knife tried to break in

Westergaard remains a potential target for extremists nearly five years after his controversial cartoon was published.

The drawing was printed along with 11 others in Jyllands-Posten in 2005.

He has received death threats and is the subject of an alleged assassination plot.
The case 'again confirms the terror threat that is directed at Denmark and against the cartoonist Kurt Westergaard in particular', Scharf said.
In October, terror charges were brought against two Chicago men whose initial plan called for attacks on Jyllands-Posten's offices.

The plan was later changed to just killing the paper's former cultural editor and Westergaard.
Muslims protest against the publication of cartoons of Prophet Mohammed in a Danish newspaper, in Calcutta, India, in 2006

In 2008, Danish police arrested two Tunisian men suspected of plotting to murder Westergaard. Neither suspect was prosecuted.

One of them was deported and the other was released Monday after an immigration board rejected PET's efforts to expel him from Denmark.

Throughout the crisis, then-Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen distanced himself from the cartoons but resisted calls to apologize for them, citing freedom of speech and saying his government could not be held responsible for the actions of Denmark's press.

You're absolutely right, the response was very inappropriate, when protests started it wasn't violent but then one leader comes up and makes this statement on tv about how this wouldn't be tolerated and this happens back then there were violent protests on streets in lebanon and Christian areas were attacked, private properties, cars...everything; the windows on my uncle's car was smashed...4 people were killed i don't remember if they punished the responsible

In the mind of any decent, sane, rational, civilised individual (irrespective of their religious persuasion) it was disproportionate, whatever way you look at it.
