Default 12 Coldplay months of 2009: JUNE (SEVEN figure following on Twitter)

Here are the highlights from June, submitted by RedGirl76 & SueDeNimes:

Twitter craziness

Coldplay joined the Twitterverse way back in January, but after a flurry of tweets from Guy and a little nudge from Anchorman at the end of May, June saw the band reach the magical 7-figure mark of 1,000,000 followers. Being fans of the 140 character social network site ourselves, Anna and I thought we’d use it as the basis for our look back at June on the Coldplay calendar.
Twitter was full of announcements all month about the goodies available on www.coldplay.com and it was another hectic month as the tour rumbled through 14 more dates in the US & Canada.

Concert Highlights

June started in Buffalo, NY for a gig at Darien Lakes. Next they headed up to Detroit, MI for a memorable concert that Roadie #42 felt compelled to blog about:
Chris was experimenting with a little vocal improvisation on the C Stage and the Detroit crowd really seemed to appreciate it!

First live on stage tweet!

By the time the boys got to Indiana on the 5th, it seemed as though Guy had been well and truly bitten by the Twitter bug and he actually tweeted live from the stage.
(It wasn’t one of the photography buffs greatest pictures but we appreciated his efforts!)
While Guy was apparently snapping the crowds and an accordion-playing Will, the Coldplay puppets took over Manhattan.

As announced in March, the band took Snow Patrol with them on tour as support acts from June 5th- 21st.
They amazed many concert-goers with their set and left them wanting more from the lads from Northern Ireland and Scotland.
In an interview with frontman Gary Lightbody, coldplay.com asked what his favourite Coldplay song is.
His response was “Glass of Water” - a song that went on to become one of the records played before his band took to the stage on their own European tour in late summer.

Roadie #42's moving Blog

Roadie #42 blogged again on June 7th – this time he was feeling all nostalgic for the good old days when the band was in its infancy, playing to small crowds in tiny venues.
How times change! In the month of June alone, Coldplay played to over a quarter of a million people (Yes, fact-fans, we searched each arenas capacity to check our figures on that one!)

#42:
Quote:
I'm stood in the corridor where the band grab a drink and a towel before the encores and I realise that despite all else that surrounds the hugeness of the Coldplay circus, they're still the same four mates who started it all those years ago. As the Viva remix pounds through the walls, they dry the sweat and talk of who came into which chorus too early or who hit the wrong note when.
Admittedly, when the show is over they leave by police escort in a screeching cavalcade of flashing lights, rather than pushing a transit van. Inside the van though, not that much has changed.

1 million followers!

June 11th was the day the band finally picked up its one millionth follower... and they were the first non-US tweeters to do so.
Anchorman thanked the masses while the boys rolled on to shows in Nashville, New Orleans, and San Antonio.
In Omaha, Guy’s on-stage tweeting produced this beautiful photo of Chris:

...while the puppets struck poses in Chicago and Winnepeg.

Birthday parties non-stop

Roadie #42 discussed all the birthdays being celebrated on tour – not just by the band and crew, but also by the fans.
Yes, that’s our Lori and Angie who were snapped at a concert with a banner for PA Vicki who was the birthday girl in San Antonio.
Even the tour had a birthday in Omaha turning one year old!

Support acts update for Wembley!

On 19th June, Anchorman announced on Twitter that Flaming Lips and Bat For Lashes would be joining Coldplay on the European leg of the tour while Coldplaying.com was buzzing about the confirmation that Girls Aloud & Jay-Z would be playing BOTH Wembley Stadium shows.

Roadie #42 blogs and blogs and blogs...

In Edmonton, Roadie #42 blogged a lot about window seats and cracked glass and posted a sound clip of Chris & Will sharing vocals on The Hardest Part. Chris had been joking that THP is “the solo section” of the show... the good folks of Edmonton made sure Will felt appreciated by giving him a huge cheer when his backing vocals kicked in!

The June shows ended with a double header in Vancouver that was filmed (for what purpose??? There’s still no word on a tour DVD).

Roadie #42 looked through the Edmonton tapes and caught a marriage proposal right in front of the B stage.

After Vancouver, band and crew headed home for a few days of R & R before the European Festivals kicked in.
That gave Coldplayers time to look at some of the pictures and videos uploaded by friends who went to the June shows, as well as listening to some of the interviews that the band recorded over the month. Guy, Will, Jonny and Chris each spent time on various radioshows and you can listen to them again in the Multimedia Section!

Oxfam has reasons to celebrate, too

Oxfam had their own reason to celebrate in Canada, as they picked up their 100,000th signature on the Viva tour.

Other news in June

While Chris obviously couldn't get enough of the movie Anvil, Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam made his peace with Coldplay, after becoming the latest member of the "I wrote Viva La Vida" group.

Tributes to Michael Jackson

There was just one final tweet for the month of June, when the band, like millions of us around the world took a moment to consider the passing of Michael Jackson:

Like many other bands and artists, Coldplay were inspired to perform a musical tribute to the King of Pop.
But we’ll leave it to your July correspondents to tell you all about that...

I think most people will vote option 3

BTW I notice all the other reviews are "Sticky" but I don't know how to do that... is it a mod thing?

WOW. Great review, Brilliant work you have done

Aww, that mariage proposal was so sweet! I think the most beautiful
moment to get a proposal must be at a Coldplay concert

One verse of Wedding bells, written by Coldplay:
Those wedding bells are ringing up upon that hill
I don't want to swallow such a bitter pill
You keep moving baby, I stay still
I always loved you and I always will
La La La La, La La La La
.. and everything that went before doesn't matter
La La La La, La La La La
I always loved you and I always will

My suggestion to a continuation:
Those wedding bells are ringing, but baby I stay
Sadly you and me just got so far away
Oh, though our time is back in the past
my love for you dear, it will always last
La La La La..

Those wedding bells are ringing, and baby you go
Honey, I'll still stay here as you left me so
I will stay and look back to the start
You will always have a place in my heart
La La La La...

Those wedding bells are ringing, babe I hear the tweet
The sound of them makes me feel so bittersweet
Your feet will move while I stay in place
My love for you dear, it's a living space
La La La La..

Thanks for the lovely comments, guys, but it was a joint effort by myself and Anna - she did the research, I did the writing, and then to use Anna's own phrase she "pimped" my stuff to make it look good

I really enjoyed contributing to the review of the year - hope the bossman likes all of our efforts then we can help him out again next year!

Why, thank you

I've loved reading all of them... you forget so much over the course of a year, then you read these reviews and so many great memories come flooding back
