i really can't understand anyone dissing Eno for what he's done so far with coldplay. viva is definitely my favorite album (tied i guess with AROBTTH).
the band is too devoted to being popular at this moment to allow eno to do too much to their sound. honestly, we didnt see eno ruin u2 until this last album (sorry if someone liked No Line...). u2 stayed true to themselves for a long time and even fucked up along the way when they tried to go TOO far outside the box. EDIT: too outside the box by themselves. coldplay, and this does not mean they are bland, are never going to go TOO far outside the box. it means they're realistic and they like to have people cheering at their shows for the NEW songs they write, not the old stuff recycled (ala a u2 concert). and can i also say that while i also love and appreciate parachutes, i don't get why so many people are keen or can expect to see the band do something that similar. really, most bands first albums are very far from what they end up being when they have a studio and some money behind themselves. i don't think coldplay will be any different.

Well I don't expect anything exactly like Parachutes, what I meant was that a lot of people, me included, expect to hear Coldplay just like themselves and not trying to sound like any other band. I respect Eno's work, it's great! and I'm happy he's with the new album too.
For me, U2 has great songs and singles, but their lasts albums have not been that consistent. They focus more on having a great stage. Have you noticed Bono does not sing anymore? He just like read the lines. The core of U2 now is The Edge. Now, when Coldplay says they want to do this new album more intimate and be closer to fans, saying they don't want to be "unreachable", it means they want to - if not go back to roots - , is to sound more real and less elaborated, a turn which I'm happy for. We don't want just great singles or "stadium songs", we want great albums. |

I wish I had all the money in the world so I could just follow these guys on tour.
Just sayin... These guys could do covers of some polka and I would love it. Anything quicker than the usual three years is absolutely fantastic!
