Okay, I want a physical cd for itunes to rip on my computer, it does that, but how can I get those ripped songs on to the actual ipod. i've been dragging the songs and put them into the ipod icon, one at a time. this seems like a waste of time. is there a faster way? thanks.

Try just selecting the folder.
Go to the top left icon, and scroll down, it should say add folder to library.

So you ripping the songs from the CD into your iTunes library, the easiest way is to plug your iPod into your computer, so that it appears in iTunes under devices, and select automatic syncing with your main library and it should copy everything in your library to the player.
Or your library size is greater than your iPod, create a playlist with the songs you want, I would do screendumps but my music is spread across a number of computers at the moment.
