I think a guitar aimed band would limit him too much. Just by looking at his work for the There Will Be Blood soundtrack...its amazing, and its not guitar based.

However if he was after glory and fame in the mainstream, yes he is wasting his talent.

this is rapidly turning into another radiohead thread so i'll just keep it going. i think that radiohead are just one more masterpiece away from being amongst the best 4 or 5 "album" bands in history. next to the beatles, led zeppelin, pink floyd and U2

taking it back to jonny greenwood. i heard that he wrote a fair bit of the score for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. is this true or not?

I think they are already better than U2 in every respect. It' shard to ever top Zeppelin, Floyd, and the Beatles since they are legends, but since U2 is a contemporary you can really compare the two and I think in terms of influence, fan base, and just pure amazingness musically, Radiohead beats U2 easily. Mostly because U2 hasn't been able to change and improve the way Radiohead has. Their latest albums still sound a lot like their older albums.

But if U2 didn't sound like U2 on every album they wouldn't be U2

They have certainly tried different things.
First listen to Boy. I hear elements of a new rock band being formed by guys who listened to the Clash, Joy Division, etc.

Then listen to the Unforgetable Fire which is completely different...more longer poetic ballads by Bono.

Then the Joshua Tree is just a classic rock album.

Then Achtung Baby is cutting the Joshua Tree Down.

And well maybe the last two albums are a little bit too radio friendly.

BUT the point is they have evolved and done different things. Not every band can be Radiohead and make multi-genre genius music

Yeah, I agree with that so was with the Beatles... who went crazy there in between with all the Magical Mystical and St. Pepper.
U2 has gone different ways also and RH too.
They were or are all creative and this separates the true artists from the just players.
Respect them all.

As I have said before, I am not big into rank-order comparisons. Just don't under estimate the genius of the Edge. For me, the stretch of The Unforgettable Fire, War, Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby is as good as it gets. Comparing the Edge to Jonny is like comparing apples to oranges.

i think jonny is comparable to kurt cobain than to any other guitarist. they both have this messy yet ingenius style of playing. and i would disagree that he is the X factor in Radiohead. each member brings their own skills and abilities to the table none more so than another
