I am pretty sure the record company could not sue without consulting the artist first, but I might be wrong. As for the similarities, there are even more similarities between Satriani and that other spanish band, so it is not a clear rip off. Itīs just a very simple widely-used chord progression...

people actually signed up for the forum to protect this guy?
coldplay is way too big to do something as stupid as that.. because if it was intentional they must be pretty stupid to think that nobody would find out...

and really, i dont think that's the case.
so lets all chill and let this guy get his kicks from it, cuz we all know there is no way in hell he could win against the guys.

Remember when John Fogerty had to defend one of his own songs that he had written back in the CCR days.... It was a hell of a fight as I remember..........

I just wish this was not happening. Coldplay are great artists... Satriani is a guitar god....

I think morpheus is right when he says Satriani just likes to play the guitar, and it's not his intention having attention. i downloaded the Satriani's song [ i liked it ! ] and I think there's few of similarity, but it doesn't mean Coldplay plagiarised the song to Satriani. All the time is possible that a band takes a rhythm of a song of another guys, when you listen a song much time you've got it in the deepest of your head, even to the musicians. Anyway, I'm a f***ing fan of Coldplay, I don't find plagiarism, I think this matter is no gonna go far, don't get annoyed and offend to Satriani, he's one of the best guitarists...

Just love Coldplay! =P

Different chords, different key, different notes, different speed, different melody, different rythm. Whatever similarity there is is purely coincidental. I noticed in the you-tube comparison that they tamper with the audio speed and pitch to make it seem similar. If you tried you could probably find a dozen lesser known indie bands who came up with the same melody by pure accident (I'm mean it's essentially four or five notes), but they didn't write the biggest song in the world right now did they?

Yes, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow almost ran me over in their car on 11/3/12, and then Chris drew a portrait of me.

I was thinking at it seems like Chris and the boys arent worried about it(that or they know how to hide it well!)...So if there not worried about it...we shouldnt be worried about it!

I'm sure Coldplay's management will handle this, remember how quickly they came back with the Creaky Boards? They brought up all of that evidence showing Chris wasn't at the concert, and that the song had been written beforehand... and that wasn't even a lawsuit! They'll assemble a good legal team and take this guy DOWN

The song has been modified so it can have the same tempo and key, don't fall for idiocy like this please, people try to make the boys look bad when they didn't do anything wrong.

The mashup is total BS because it was staged to sound alike.

I'm first and foremost a Coldplay fan but my OH introduced me to Satriani when we first started going out and although his music isn't necessarily my usual taste, I find him fascinating to watch and have seem him live, he is a great performer and a brilliant writer. He is also an amazing teacher and it wouldn't surprise me if guitarists that Chris and the boys look up to or have looked up to in the past have themselves been taught by a line of previous Satriani pupils/admirers!

I think its quite pathetic that a lot of you are just willing to slam Satriani for what he is doing without even listening to a single one of his tracks?! If I had to choose it would be hands down Coldplay don't get me wrong, but this is a fucking massive industry and if at the end of the day Satriani is being advised to sue and earn money that he (partly) rightfully considers his then so be it, all we can do is sit back and let the judges decide.

Personally I do not think Coldplay would of obviously intended to steal the melody, neither do I even think they have unconsciously done it - I think it happens to be a coincidence, and if thats the case hopefully the court case will resolve it If not I'm sure the boys wont be too miffed, after all they have millions in the bank and plenty of fans who know otherwise

I just think its a bit sad that people automatically jump to the conclusion that Satriani is a nobody with his "fingers in his ass" - he's an incredibly talented guy, who is respected and admired by millions across the globe... has been for decades - and afterall, if you had wrote something then a few years later a remarkably similar song was produced would you not have your doubts?

What if, down the line, a band is formed that has immense success - I'm talking along the lines of the Beatles... and one of their tracks has a chorus that sounds really similar to Clocks? Which fans will be stamping their feet in tantrum then?

A few things come across my mind when I heard about this....

1) Is he suing the Creaky Boards for copying his song? Obviously they must have copied off of him since they wrote their song after him and they said Coldplay copied their song, right? Wouldn't it make sense that he goes after Creaky Boards? My guess is he is not going after them because there's no money there.

2) The timing of this is just so wrong. IMO, and I am not trying to diss him, but any respectable musician/person would file suit right away if they feel their music was illegally copied and not wait half of year to file suit. Of course, waiting all that time allows the earnings build up which means he can "get" more if ruled in his favor.

Ex...Different musician but when Avril Lavigne had that song "Girlfriend" a band went after her right away but this guy didn't do that AFAIK.

3) He wants this to go to be tried by a jury, well, if I was a juror I would already have doubts about his claim. I would doubt the timing of his claim and the fact that he waited as long as he did to file a claim.

4) Finally, I really don't see that much similarity between the two songs that warrants this type of action.

I think you should listen to both original recordings.. The tempo is similiar, so is the pitch... I have been playing guitar for a long time... the key is the same too.... dude.... denial.
