I totally agree they need to play longer shows. I'm not to versed in the shows of other huge bands and how long they last but hell, even a 7 dollar movie lasts 2 hours..

While I like the whole "Viva" theme at the concert and they play 9/10 songs off the new album, they are completely ignoring ALL (except Yellow) of Parachutes..Cmon, you can't throw one of the other songs off that album every once in a while??? Remember when you won a grammy for that album? Yea, that means you should probably play something else off that album and not act like Yellow is the only song that was released on Parachutes. They play about half of AROBTTH but they leave really really good songs off the setlist from that album (Warning Sign, AROBTTH which they NEVER NEVER NEVER PLAY at the actual show). I would think that becuase you occasionally mix the setlist up you would throw in different stuff, but it seems like they have only mixed things up in the way "Ok I had fish last night, so lets have chicken tonight and then fish tommorow and then chicken the next night" which isn't really mixing it up as far as just alterating the same songs, which they don't even do anymore apparently becuase they play the same exact setlist for consecutive shows now for some reason.

I think johnny has even said (In his latest interview on coldplay.com) that the last thing they wanted to happen is people say "I wish they played more of thier old stuff"...well....thats pretty much whats happening. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the new album but I LOVE your old stuff as much as I do the new stuff, its what got me listening to coldplay in the first place. That and every live show I listened to was AMAZING which is what makes a good band good. But isn't it a bad thing if I listen to a show on the viva tour and it sounds EXACTLY like another show off the viva tour?

PLEASE COLDPLAY PLAY MORE OF YOUR OLD STUFF!!!! WARNING SIGN, AROBTTH, TALK, WHAT IF, A WHISPER, EVERYTHING'S NOT LOST, SHIVER, TILL KINGDOM COME, WHITE SHADOWS, SWALLOWED IN THE SEA, THE HARDEST PART, HOW YOU SEE THE WORLD

Please just insert one of these songs into each night's setlist and I promise we would all be happier about a hour and half show but if you wanted to play longer then that would be ok too

PS: Keep playing Square One cuz that song is better live then the recorded version.

LOL problem is, they've won a grammy for every album!

I don't have a problem with sets of 90 minutes-I would prefer 2 hours, which you get from radiohead and others. The problem I feel is the darn set-list feels the same!
Given we are four albums in, lots of hit songs, coldplay should have an entirely different set every night. They aspire to be like Radiohead then they should go watch radiohead for a week, you get +20 song sets that are unique-yes they play still play 5-7 new songs, but they are different new songs, different old songs every night. They do this because otherwise it gets boring for them. Okay they fluff their lines sometimes, but there is an edge to their performances which right now coldplay do not have in theirs.
I went to LA and Vegas, and I can relate that I will not do two shows in the same tour again. Both were good, but both were almost the same. I am glad I didn't decide to go to 5 or 6 shows this tour.

I think encores are too cliched and the norm! I am glad some bands still only do encores on very special occassions. But yeah, you are right about coldplay and practice.
Very definitely I have felt coldplay have been under-rehearsed this tour and not very spontaneous. They played longer sets with after the 1st album!

Let's not forget that they decided to appreciate their fans by jumping off stage and running backstage to join the folks in the back.
I'll take that kind of consideration before a 2 hour long set. Think about how amazing that is!!!!

These arenas are full with 200,000 people. So easily they could get on that stage and do what they do and leave without a moments thought- but instead they really do try to get something across to their fans, and that's that they matter. That they are worth the extra security and effort it takes to haul ass across the whole arena just to give everyone a whole new angle of our boys.

200,000? More like 15,00 at most.

But I totally agree, longer setlists are a must. You can't charge essentially 100 dollars for a a decent lower level seat and expect people to be happy with a 90 minute show. I mean, playing for an hour and 12 minutes was fine at MSG because it was free (still too short, but I can't really bitch about it), but when you have people paying in the neighborhood of hundreds of dollars to come to your show, you better be playing 2 hours. Mix things up, have some fun. Keep the fans guessing, and I think it'll truly be appreciated.

Imagine the cheers they'd get if you didn't know that the last songs were going to be Fix You, LiJ, and Death and All His Friends--and instead, they threw in Everything's Not Lost or Amsterdam to close--just out of sheer spontaneity. It's what should be done and I think Coldplay will do it in time. Hopefully, anyway.

It is clever doing this...but it is not spontaneous. One problem is when they did this I lost interest for those two songs. The sound was poor, I couldn't see the band, even with those (over-rated) ball screens.
Bascially, we (fans) are mostly paying over $100 per ticket-at least 60% of all seats are $100 in every venue. Compare radiohead in Indy the other day, my ticket was $65(top price)
1st row. I got a 25 song set lasting over 2 hours and 2 encores. Which was better value? MMmmmmmmm

Some thoughts on this whole debate (PlEASE keep in mind that all of the following are only my opinions and I don't mean to assert they are the only correct opinions or to offend anyone with differing opinions)

I saw the band both nights in Chicago and they WERE polished and tight IMHO. That said, I've always found Coldplay to be just a bit sloppy in terms of live performance, to me, the mistakes and goofs they made when I saw them were nothing out of the ordinary for this band. With that said, I would contend that ANY band no matter how great will always sound rougher at the start of a tour than they will once they've had time to "get in the groove" of live performance.

Set length, I find Coldplay's set's to be toward the short end of what I consider acceptable for a major headlining act. They could play a bit longer, but they don't. I don't see that changing, would be nice if it did, but probably won't.

Set itself, Yeah the show is roughly the same everynight but that's what a huge arena show is. DMB, mixes their sets up as much as they do because a HUGE perportion of their audience wants to hear b-sides, rareties, etc. With Coldplay the situation is the exact opposite, the majority of their fans go to hear the radio hits and will see the show once (or perhaps a few times per tour). Coldplay don't Have the kind of audience DMB of BRMC have and their shows reflect that. Mind you, I'm not saying a lot of CP fans don't want to hear the more obscure songs, but I'm affraid you're in the minority as far as ths band's fans go. Just look at how many people at the concerts sing along to the radio hits yet stare blankly whenever the band try to play a less well known song.

I agree that Coldplay is not the best live show in rock (and IMHO will likely never be.), but they are, for me worth the money to see live, for you they may not be. That's cool. It's subjective, based on opinion and what the show is worth to you. There's no way to be objective about it. Coldplay does what they do, if that's not to your tastes, your money is probably better spent on some other band you can enjoy, as Coldplay probably won't change anytime soon. (if they ever do at all.)

As a last bit, I think the Parachutes material is being somewhat disregarded because it doesn't fit the show. Most of the songs are quieter and slower and would not fit in between the more "crowd pleasing" numbers from the newer records.
