Coldplay reveals 3rd free show - Barcelona

LONDON (Billboard) - Coldplay gave away the first single from its upcoming album to fans over the Internet on Tuesday, and also revealed plans to play a third free show, this time in Barcelona.

The tune "Violet Hill" -- which has a harder, more experimental sound than previous Coldplay releases -- was made available at the band's site (http://www.coldplay.com) just after midday..

After several attempts, Billboard managed to obtain a copy of the track, the first from the upcoming album

The Web site asks for the user's email and postcode details, after which an automatically-generated email is sent to the downloader's inbox. The email contains a link to the free MP3, which pops-up on the desktop within a zip-file. The URL apparently expires in six hours.

The track will get a conventional paid-for digital release on May 6, ahead of the June 12 release of the album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends."

"Violet Hill" was given its first airing on BBC Radio 1 Tuesday, with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin on hand. During his lunchtime conversation with host Jo Whiley, he revealed that the band would also play a free concert in Barcelona, but did not disclose the venue or date of the gig.

The group recently announced it would promote the album with free shows at Brixton Academy on June 16 and Madison Square Garden in New York on June 23. The band has not yet disclosed how fans will be able to get in to the shows.

Band set to announce details of the show soon

Coldplay have revealed that they will play a free gig in Barcelona soon.

Speaking to Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 1, frontman Chris Martin revealed that the band were set to announce details of the show soon.

Coldplay had recently announced that they would play two free gigs in June, one in New York and one in London around the reelase of new album 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends'.

"We're doing a concert in Madison Square Garden for free, which no one's ever done before because it costs, like, a million pounds to play there," he said. "We're paying for it because we want to be generous for a bit, before we're reminded that we have to get back to being on a record contract.

"We're going to do one in Barcelona as well, but we haven't announced that yet."

I heard the interview with Chris and Johnny this morning on Radio 1 - However, what I heard was a free concert in Boston! Not in Barcelona!!!

PS: I'm pretty sure it's Barcelona though. It's been said weeks ago anyway..

I really wish they'd do one in Canada. MSG is a little too far away for me to go to.

If I was Coldplay, I'd draw winning tickets from the email addys submitted to download the song. That way people would only get the song from the official site. (Not that I did,lol)
