Just wondering what Grades are people currently on and how do they find there current grade?
I am hoping to start soon. I hope to have a Grade 6 in the next 2 or 3 years, however i imagine that's just wishful thinking? I've been playing for the last year and a half or so but im self taught and have never had any lessons. I'm thinking about taking up lessons next year.

What material do you play that's at level four? I'm just starting now to learn classical (all i can play is pop/rock). Learning Fur Elise and Menuetto in G Major(Bertini) at the moment

So you haven't had any lessons?
Can you read music? I am at Grade 6 and am having my piano exam next week, I have been learning for 8 years and most people in my year are only at Grade 4 so I'm a little a head. But then again, I can only go up one grade a year. If you have had no lessons getting to Grade 6 in two-three years is a little hard.

Quote: Yeah i can read sheet music but not too good at sight playing. I know, grade 6 is probably too ambitious. What pieces did you play for Grade 4? Quote: Goodluck!

lol. I took lessons when I was little but I'm technically self-taught and oblivious to this terminology. what type of songs would qualify as grade 4? or 5 or what not?

Quote: Quote: Well, it's hard to tell if you will know them, I can tell you what scales I needed to learn, E, F, B, Bflat all of them in major, minor, chromatic, conturary, staccato and as arpegios...so quite a lot, but Grade 4 is halfway there (there are eight grades in AMEB exams)....I'm not really sure how to tell you how hard the exam is... Quote: Quote: Thanks, I did my exam yesterday, it went very well!

i finished grade 8 last year and im doing my certificate for completion this year.... for me its taken a little under a year to do each grade. It really depends on how much you practice or how good you teacher is. If you want to self teach and do a good job of it i suggest investing in a music syllabus that is recognized across your contry. For me it was the AMEB. Ive played for almost 8 years and im still having fun =).
Best of luck! |

Thankyou!
I got a B+ but according to my teacher, the examiner was very hard on everyone as no one got higher than a B+, so in her eyes, I got an A! I'm currently learning the theme from Titanic...and it's killing me ![]() Best of luck to all your exams (if you are doing one)!!!!!!

Can anybody help a self taught coldplay fan figure out what "grade" he is? I've been playing almost exactly a year now(maybe longer) and although my "repertoire" consists mostly of coldplay songs (a ghost, amsterdam, trouble etc.) I've been working on more "legit" classical pieces like fur elise and Pachelbel's canon in D.
In the past week I've managed to memorize and play the 1st mvt. of beethoven's "moonlight" sonata. I'm sure most of you can play that in your sleep...but anyway, I was wondering what "grade" that would put me in, assuming I can play it with respectable, consistent tempo and little or no mistake. Some forum's have put it at grade 5/6...but I would like some other opinions. thanks.

Definitely not 5/6 I'd say... Perhaps a three.. It's really hard to say. You can learn some really difficult pieces and still not have the right knowledge, you've just learnt something basically by heart.
http://abrsm.org/?page=exams/gradedM...yllabuses.html On this page you can find the syllabuses for all the grades and perhaps get a slightly better understanding as to where you're at. YUou can also try going to your library and search for pianobooks that are graded. Good Luck
