Heavyweight Amy is world's biggest bunny

By DAVID WILKES - More by this author » Last updated at 08:40am on 12th February 2007 Comments (1)
Once, it seemed, Roberto the rabbit would always rule the hutch.
Measuring 3ft 6ins from the tips of his back legs to his front paws, and weighing an astonishing 35lb (heavier than the average three-year-old child), he is not a bunny to be taken lightly.
But now Roberto, long thought to be the biggest rabbit in the world, has been made to look small - by his 'wife' Amy.
Who now wears the trousers in their relationship is open to question after it was revealed by their owner, Annette Edwards, that a weigh-in had confirmed three year old Amy tips the scales at 40lbs, or nearly four stone.
And Roberto isn't the only big bunny...click here

As well as being nearly half a stone heavier than four year old Roberto, Amy has also grown six inches longer than him, meaning her mammoth paws are now well and truly on his biggest bunny title.
Back in 2004, when the Daily Mail first revealed Roberto's extraordinary proportions, Amy, who like him is a Continental Giant rabbit, was 18 inches long and weighed just over a stone.
Despite her enormous growth, Mrs Edwards, 55, of Worcester, a model and former pet shop owner, insists Amy is a 'fussy eater.'
"The carrots must have their green tops still on, and the hay has to be fresh and green or she won't go near it," she said.
Amy, a mother of 32, eats two apples, a handful of carrots, half a cabbage, fresh hay, and a dog size bowl of rabbit mix every day, at a total cost of nearly £10.
Golden-brown Amy is now so huge she sleeps in an outside dog kennel where she regularly plays rough and tumble with Mrs Edwards' twin Chihuahua dogs Sadie and Vegas. She towers over them, but is good natured and never picks on them.
Mrs Edwards said: "I never thought I would see it but the facts are there: Amy is now officially bigger than Roberto.
"She is enormous but not because she over eats on junk but because she gets plenty of exercise and eats very healthily.
"It makes incredible reading when you take time to look at the stats. She is bigger than most cats and dogs.
"Continental Giants are very big anyway but Amy and Roberto are exceptionally big even for this breed. They are just unusually big."
Mrs Edwards is confident the next record holder will be one of Roberto and Amy's children.
Both Roberto and Amy were bought from a breeder in Holland while Mrs Edwards was running the Bunnyland pet shop in Worcester.
Last year Roberto had to fend off claims to his record from a German Giant called Herman. Despite photographs that appeared to make the Teutonic contender look bigger than Roberto, it turned out Herman was a mere 3ft and 22lb.
His title secured, Roberto 'married' Amy in April last year at what was billed by Mrs Edwards as the UK's first ever rabbit wedding.
Guinness World Records do not keep biggest animal records any more because owners were deliberately overfeeding their pets.
Mrs Edwards insists there are 'no jealousy issues' between Amy and Roberto since she surpassed him in size.
"They get on fine. But we do have to keep them separate because if they come to together they start mating," she said.
One can only speculate how Roberto might really feel about being overshadowed by his wife. Hurt pride? Belittled? Hen-pecked, even?
Yesterday he was understood to be away from home - on stud duty.
