^yeah, that would be funny! but a lot of coldplay fans that arent completetly obsessed with them like us but genuinely like them are really preppy college-age kids that wouldnt be caught dead doing something like that, at least from my experience at their american concerts. i think it would be awesome if somehow everyone would do that! i have seen lots of people with the MTF equals sign on their hands, though, especially at my first coldplay concert, which is a more subtle tribute to them. i chickened out on doing it for my second concert, though, because the friend i was with thought i was crazy anyway for dressing like them. besides, i saw very few equals signs the second time, though that wouldnt have stopped me from doing it.
anyway, back on topic...what about them shoes...lol

What exactly is 'preppy'? And why is it wrong to wear white trainers with black trousers/jeans?

oh, god, preppy...hmm, how can i explain. i got to private school, which is like, preppy heaven. its like, all the kids that go to college-preperatory schools that you see in movies or whatever that have the blazers and chinos and ties and pleated skirts and knee socks? yeah, thats back when most schools had uniforms. now most private schools have ditched uniforms and have strict dress codes. and because a large percentage of the kids that go to private schools are wealthy, they wear polo shirts that cost a fortune because theyre by lacoste or ralph lauren and the girls carry designer bags. and the big preppy thing thats in now is turning the collar up on polo shirts, or wearing two different colored polo shirts at one time on top of each other, popping the collar so you can see the color of both. basically, youd be beat up in a tough neighborhood.
preppy stores and labels (though im not sure they have them in the UK): abercrombie and fitch, j. crew, ralph lauren, lacoste, hollister...theres a bunch more. in short, preppy is someone who wears very expensive clothes and knows theyre rich and generally goes to a private school.

and wearing white sneakers with black pants just...usually isnt done. its not completely wrong or anything, but its generally thought of as geeky, like a real nerd would to it because they dont know any better to match their shoes with their clothes because they dont care about things like how they look.
ive done it before, lots of people do, but its not considered in good taste.

sorry for the novel...

they're everywhere just like emos (sorry to anyone who is one)
i've noticed though alot of young people are into the emo look. Alot of people coming out of high school and getting into first year uni have this look now which was not really seen when i was a first year.

btw my dad has Will shoes- my dad is now officially "cool"

Will has very good taste in shoes. I also think Jonny has excellent taste. A converse man. A boy after my own heart. I believe Guy has some good taste. Chris needs help in every style department, but I guess the Adidas are fine :-P

Adidas rules! Or well, they just fit me well and I was ever happy when I discovered Chris wearing Adidas as well. I think wearing white trainers with anything is/was quite popular in (Northen) Europe. Especially Adidas white trainers were super-trendy. I think they are becoming a wee bit less trendy these days.

Just stumbled on this thread months since it first began - thank you for answering my question about preppy clothes and white footwear with black pants lol. I love wearing black/white converse with my black jeans or my sort of grey/blue adidas with black

Will has the best shoes.

Heck... he has the best fashion sense out of the lot of them. The other three are a bit helpless when it comes to style. Besides, Aididas are a bit too Run DMC for me.
