are any of you an active supporter of your local music scene? do you go to shows all the time? are there any bands from your town that you think should be huge?
I can only think of me and briggins as far as I can tell, most cities have amazing underground music scenes. New Zealand's one is pretty small and easy to keep track of, cos we're a small/young country. But it must be amazing being from somewhere like New York and going to crazy small shows

Not really. That's to say, as far my 'city' goes, I live too far off to really get entrenched in any 'scene', and the few 'festival' like gatherings there are to go to have been pretty disappointing in my experience.
Now, at college I did habitual attended open mics and bought a few C.D's from east-Tennessee touring groups or the couple bands put together on campus. So I guess that counts for something, but I couldn't give you any recommendations of honest-to-god great bands in and around my county.

Quote: This is funny if you read the words between apostrophes in a sarcastic tone. As for my local 'scene', it's absolutely awful, in fact there's nothing worse then knowing someone who is into it, because it's all they talk about, and every weekend want to invite you to some dive of a pub to go watch them. There's mainly metal or punk bands, some in the style of nu-metal or Rage Against the Machine. Bands who don't have a screamer or rapper, and actually sing, the singer is usually woeful. Now this being said there are a few incredibly talented cover bands going around who sound fantastic, but they don't normally write their own stuff, and if they ever do, it's normally the most forgettable moment of the night. That's a bit of a shame.

I'm pretty active in the local scene, since I'm basically part of it. I go to as many shows as I can or find interesting, a lot of which are cheap for students, or are free alltogether. For a medium sized city, it has a great music and cultural scene in general.
I go to the music school, which helps you get a foot in. I think you have an easier time getting gigs as well. Some of my favorite bands from nearby Mining In Yukon Röyksopp Peter Estdahl Flunk Dunderhonning Krĺkesřlv Einar Stray Moddi Cold Mailman

Yeah since late last year i'm trying to attend local bands gigs near my area, some are already big like Second who started singing in english back in the early 00's. Not always the venues bring local artists, which in a way is good. Thankfully seems that the city is opening to more music, more variated styles and having more venues.
Since most them sing in spanish i don't see much the point in listing them but anyways: Audio's Pain (seen them 3 times already, have two albums signed, they sing in english sounding sort of Muse+Radiohead). Los últimos bańistas (they seem so shy but i think have good potential, bad-ass drummer). Neil Gosney (well he is british but lives here so... obviously he sings in english, is funny when speaking spanish). Varry Brava (quite festive music). from my born town, which i keep contact with (Valladolid). Arizona baby (they are of the blue revival wave as to say, also sing in english). Cosmic Birds (sing in english, they are quite new)

awkward bump to tell you how small new zealand is and how no one buys albums anymore
Toy Love released a special edition record limited to 400, and they managed to get number 11 on NZs Album charts... 400 ...400 albums to get into NZ's top 20

Most of our local scene in Oxford, UK is metal.
My band, Circuit Chase are one of the few indie bands around. We're rare, these days

Our scene in DC is rap and really generic hard rock. You can also find jazz but I've never really looked for it. We have this radio show called local licks though, so it's a great way for emerging bands to make waves.
I've heard there's a Garage rock movement, which would be great but I've never seen it so I don't know how true that is.....

Did gorillas take over the world? Has Car Kids been released yet? If so can you email me a copy from your brain (obviously where data is stored in the future). Well, good luck with those terminators!
