Coldplay dazzle a sold-out Garden
A review of Coldplay at TD Garden on Sunday July 30, 2012


The line “with great power comes great responsibility” may be overused, but it’s apparent when it comes to Coldplay. The English foursome is without a doubt one of the biggest bands in the world, which means they’re a major draw for fans, but also for criticism. Their latest album, Mylo Xyloto, which they’ve been touring in support of since last year, only received mixed reviews. However, at their stop at Boston’s TD Garden on Sunday night they left no doubt that they deserve to be amongst the biggest acts in the world with a grand performance before a sold-out crowd.

Energy and creativity fuel Coldplay’s current show. The energy started with frontman Chris Martin, who performed like a man who’s been trapped behind a piano for years, dying to get out. The singer explored every bit of the band’s extensive stage and catwalk, by running, jumping, rolling, and dancing his way through show. The creativity came in the form of the ingenious idea to make fans part of the visual dynamic of the show by issuing every attendee a colored wristband that lit up in unison at certain points of the performance. The result was a dazzling display that charged songs like “Hurts Like Heaven”, “Paradise”, and “Charlie Brown”. Their set was heavy on new material, such as the aforementioned trio, all of which both looked and sounded like they were built for arenas thanks to the stunningly colorful imagery and big, sing-along choruses.

They’ve certainly added some new tricks, but Coldplay also stayed true to their old ways with confetti cannons, huge balloons, and several stages, as they relocated to the end of the catwalk to take the tempo down a bit. Included was the ballad “Warning Sign”, which Martin amusingly screwed up then jokingly claimed that thoughts of the Olympics had distracted him. The band also relocated, one by one, to a side stage in the loge section of the Garden for one of the few X & Y tunes in “Speed of Sound”, before returning to the main stage for the encore.

The night ended in spectacular fashion as a laser show accompanied the usual piano bench-rocking of “Clocks” before Martin seemed to give everything he had left to his leaps in “Fix You”, only to go at it once more as he ran about the entire stage for closer “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”.

Coldplay have had the power of one of music’s biggest acts for years and with this show so well-catered to an arena audience, they’ve shown that they’ve not only accepted, but are enjoying the responsibility.

Rising star Marina and the Diamonds opened the show with a charming set that drew many fans in early with bouncy synthpop numbers like “I Am Not a Robot” and “Primadonna” serving as warm-ups before finally getting fans out of their seats with “Radioactive”.

OMG WHAT A SHOW

easily the BEST concert in my life. 1st time seeing the boys but it WILL NOT be my last, that's for sure! The lights, lasers, and confetti! Tried to wait for someone to com out, but then the staff at the Garden said to leave the area. Cannot wait for next time!

Recently they had also performed Trouble once or twice, instead of Warning Sign. I think they're trying different things, so, who knows what you'll get ?...Though I think you still have big chances that it'll be performed at your concert

The best night of my life: Coldplay @ TD Garden, July 30th, 2012.

So here’s my write-up/review/story of how I made it to the 2nd row of the Coldplay concert last night, the night I almost died.

It might just be some long run-on sentences and random thoughts because I can’t think right now I still have so many feels ashgfuersguresi

I’m sitting here typing this in my beautiful shirt with my Xyloband on and I can’t believe this all happened to me oh my God is this real

Anyway here goes you don’t have to read the whole thing but yeah

So we got to Boston and went to a restaurant and I tried to eat but I couldn’t because I was excited and my stomach was all weird

Then we got to the TD Garden and we still had like an hour until the doors opened so we walked around and then got in line and my stomach was in knots and my heart was beating really fast and I don’t know if that’s normal but it was

Then they finally let us in and I got my Xyloband and it was so beautiful and I put it on as we were walking to our seats and oh my God I can’t even describe it here’s a picture

Then we went to our seats (and got merch on the way):

and they were good but I don’t think I would have been able to see the C Stage very well from there but anyway I put on the shirt I made and one of the roadies came and walked by our section and then he kept walking

And then another guy came and he was wearing all black like the first guy and he had equipment and such and he looked like he worked for the band and he started walking over and omg I didn’t know what to think and he said hi and started talking to us in a lovely British accent and he introduced himself as Dan and then he said “are you excited for the show?” and of course we said yes, we were really excited and he said he liked our shirts and it looked like we had spent a lot of time on them and we had been waiting a long time and then he asked how our seats were and we said “good….” and he was like “so they couldn’t be any better?” and i didn’t know what to say at that moment i was honestly just freaking out so i think i said something stupid like “i don’t know..” and he explained how the band buys the first few rows so the most dedicated fans are there and it’s not just the people who paid a lot to be there and just “sit there like this” and then he crossed his arms and looked bored and he said “right?” and i knew that already of course but i just couldnt believe it was HAPPENING TO ME and he got out a huge stack of tickets and grabbed two and said “what does that say?” and he showed me the ticket and pointed to the row AND IT SAID FUCKING ROW 2 OH MY GOD and I said “ROW 2” with this stupid look on my face and I was shaking and he was like “you have to show you’re really dedicated and you’re real fans. I’ll just tie my shoe here while you sing a few lines from a coldplay song, any coldplay song, and then I’ll give you the tickets” and I’m like oh my god how am I supposed to SING I CAN BARELY BREATHE and so my friend just picked the first song she could think of & was just like “okay.. how about… every teardrop is a waterfall” (funny cause i was about to cry) and so we sang a few lines horribly and he smiled and gave us our tickets and we thanked him like 42 million times and then he saw my nails and he was like “wow, i love those” and i WAS DYING OMG DAN GREEN LOVED MY NAILS CAN I JUST KEEP THEM FOREVER

anyway so we went to find our seats and i could barely breathe let alone think to find our seats so we had to ask one of the guys that worked there and we were like “how do we get down to the floor?…” and he looked at our tickets and he was like “wow, how’d you get these?” and we briefly explained what happened and he was like “really? you’re so lucky!” and showed us how to get to the floor and OMFG I COULD NOT BREATHE literally and we finally found our seats with the help of like 2 more people and they were PERFECT and there was this awesome guy already there who high fived us and everyone was so nice omg have I ever mentioned how much I love coldplayers

Anyway Emili Sande was good and Marina and the Diamonds was really really great omg I’m pretty sure she smiled at me a few times I died and she’s just so talented why can’t I sing like that

Then she went off and a little while later 99 Problems came on and I COULD NOT BREATHE AGAIN and everyone in the first few rows were dancing it was fantastic and then the Back To The Future theme and I could not believe it was happening

Then THEY CAME ON AND JONNY WAS SO CLOSE AND SO WAS CHRIS AND OMG I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE THIS NIGHT HAPPENED AGFHSUGHJP;AERHI

Some highlights from the night (not in order, just me randomly remembering things):

in GPASUYF he said “let me play 2 shows where the Celtics play”
YES THEY PLAYED GREEN EYES OMG I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT AND HE WAS SINGING TO JONNY HELP
he said “so i’m afraid we have a choice between two coldplay songs. it’s not that much of a choice but it’s a choice. and uh, on the one hand we have a song called Warning Sign, and on the other hand we have a song called Green Eyes which we haven’t played in a while…” (here everyone started screaming) “…So if you’d like us to play Green Eyes, please say.. uh.. I’ve never done this kind of thing before.. I think we’ll just play Green Eyes. I think we’ll just lead the way. You don’t pay to make choices, you pay to see us make choices so this is Green Eyes and if it goes terribly wrong I’m afraid that’s what you asked for… True professionals, true professionals.”
