Chris says that about almost everything they do. One minute he thinks it's the best thing in the world, the next he says it's shit, lol. If I hated my first album that much, I wouldn't still be playing songs from it 11 years later.

Yes, they ARE definitely enjoying themselves, and I'm VERY happy for their success.:)

I guess my issue is Chris's 'celebrity' seems to have changed his musical priorities. He and the others used to give new artists opportunities, but now an established pop star gets the call.

It just makes me sad. But it's merely my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

Nikola 21-01-2012 01:47 AM

I guess they could have called a lot of singers before Rihanna, but their choice is kinda limited in regards to Chris' voice.
He has a soft voice, even his friend Beyonce would have made him his bitch. :D
I don't know... The "problem" isn't Rihanna, nor the song. She's right for the song, the song's right for the album.
It's just that the album is what it is. Essentially anti-Coldplay. In all ways different from Parachutes.
I get it why some people don't like. Even despise it. I myself like it... Considering their history, they'll certainly change again for LP6.

TraceOddity 21-01-2012 01:51 AM

I love most of it. UFO is one of the prettiest songs they've ever written. HLH and Charlie are amazing...PoC doesn't really do anything for me, and that's sad, because usually Coldplay songs elicit deep emotions in me. Paradise really grew on me, but even there. You don't hear Jonny til the end (and a bit of chording throughout), and I'd have mixed him higher in UIF too.

Overall, it's a good solid album, but not in the way AROBTTH or Viva are. Those are COLDPLAY albums to me.:)

EDIT: Dear Rihanna- They're not called ColdPlay as per your twitter, ya git. :p

Nikola 21-01-2012 02:04 AM

Well sure, songs like Politik and The Scientist have more intense emotions packed into then than half of MX.
MX has different emotions. Charlie Brown is 100% concentrated happiness. :nice:
I didn't mean you when I said that some people despise it. :) I've seen comments from people completely dismissing it.
I take offence when someone says that they turned their backs on their fans.
Or that MX was a thought through project to gain money and celebrity and not something they enjoyed making and performing...

TraceOddity 21-01-2012 02:08 AM

No, I didn't think that was aimed at me, and I do believe they love and enjoyed making MX. I'm just really missing the old days today, and wishing their next album would be more...organic. 4 guys playing music together. That's what it's supposed to be all about...n their words.

You penned down my thoughts perfectly. I do not despise MX but I cannot make myself like it that much either. I believe Charlie Brown might be Coldplay's Sunday Bloody Sunday if exposed in a good way. However , I dont know why I feel they need more guitar in the songs. The acoustic songs are good but there are only two of them.
:/
Rihanna is what she is and she does justice to POC. However she makes it her own track and not a coldplay song anymore. Bringing back U2 comparisions ( I know i shouldnt compare) I just feel MX's equivalent is Pop ! X & Y was quite good, it had the coldplay sound though nothing compares to viva or rush..... Hoping a more solid album with more guitar, orchestra, classical coldplay sounds from LP6.

TraceOddity 21-01-2012 05:30 AM

^ totally agree with you! Though, I LOVE Jonny's guitar and can't get enough of it, but damn I'm a sucker for those piano songs, and he compliments them so well. It's been nice to see him really cut loose on VLV and MX, but VLV was far superior and SOUNDED like Coldplay to me.

Rihanna does do the song justice, But I'd have been just as happy without it. Just my opinion though. I swear I'm not a hater, lol.

I am sucker for piano songs too. Chris has such an amazing voice which is so uncommon and actually very "NOT-Mainstream". To see him do pop and mainstream is a shame as he really is built for stadium rock. I guess this album will give them some new fans but I guess the quintisentissial coldplay fan will be a tad dissapointed!

I found myself liking it a lot more than expected.Even ETIAW grew on me (but mostly for Jonny's guitar licks keeping it from being a TOTAL techno song, lol.) I suspect it will be remembered in the canon ahead of X&Y but behind the others. And I also know that once I hear a Coldplay song live I'm in love forever, so I'll probably love MX after I see them in Toronto. But please, Chris, bring back the feel of Amsterdam and Trouble on LP6?? Pleeeeeeeae?

Have fun at toronto and give a good detailed review after the show. Lol. Yea, its above x&y but lower than the rest. Paradise grew on me but etiaw didnt sadly. Lets hope for a better album next time!

I'll def. be writing a review and hopefully taking lots of great pics! Paradise grew on me too. At least there's a piano in it. I wouldn't have mixed it that low, but I'm not them, and if they're proud of it, I can live with it. :)

That's my main concern...though I'm hoping that if they continue to release singles throughout the year, people will be reminded of it...at least a little bit. :\

coldplaymom 21-01-2012 08:06 AM

It reminds me a bit of Robert Downey Jr telling Gwyneth about The Iron Man, don't you want to be in a movie people actually see? Her answer was yes, and look how it turned out for her.
Chris has stated several times that he wants Coldplay music exposed to a wider audience. He's talked about tribalism in music. Like Rihanna or hate her, she's very popular pop singer. Coldplay wrote PoC with her in mind, clearly wanting to capture her audience. I really don't care for Rihanna's music, but I have to admit she's done a really good job with PoC.
We can debate this until we're blue in the face, the band has chosen the direction in which they feel they can grow as artists and musicians. A true Coldplay fan will never desert them.
MX isn't my favorite Coldplay album. The experiment we did recently on another thread actually revealed to me that it's equal 3rd with Parachutes, Behind AROBTT, X&Y, and Viva. Equally, I was at a Festival this past September and I didn't care which song they played, I sang every single one of them, old and new. Just to see Chris and the band in front of me, seeing how hard they try was good enough for me. So for as long as I live and as long I can afford it, I'll go to concerts (already have my ticket for July) and will always their albums.

Going on the X Factor turned out be not such a bad thing. It actually did the band lots of good. Perhaps performing with Rihanna at the Grammys will have the same efffect, which is what the band really wants.

Even though Adele is the better singer, had I been given the power to choose a duet partner for Coldplay between she and Rihanna, I'd go for the latter in heartbeat. I mean, can you imagine screaming Adele next to Coldplay's Chris? It simply wouldn't work.

stop here

There is no such thing as 'a true Coldplay fan' because it is opinion based

we can argue this until we're blue in the face so don't bother to argue with me!!!!

TraceOddity 21-01-2012 08:23 AM

^Hmmm. I think it might have, but Adele, much as I love her, is also over-exposed these days.

This was probably the most objective post on the whole subject and I totally respect it.:) My personal taste doesn't affect the fact that the band loves and is proud of what they're doing. I'm only in it for a fun discussion, and am not trying to win, lol. But I'd still be fine without PoC on the album.

I really don't think the guys need to try anymore to broaden their fan-base. They've already conquered the world, imo, and Chris doesn't need to worry! Hey, boys, you've arrived!:D

Unless they genuinely 'sell out', and I don't think they have, I'll be there with them as I was at the start, going to gigs and buying every album. They're still the best band recording new music today, imo. :D

Thanks for such a well-rounded post!

Imma take you on!!! Lol. j/k. I'm a 'true Coldplay fan' and so are those who fell in love with them based on their latter albums. And opinions (including mine) are like assholes. Everybody's got one, they usually stink, and most are full of shit, lol. :D

But it's still fun ti discuss, argue, analyze and debate. We wouldn't bother if we didn't love the band so much!:)

In my opinion, a true Coldplay fan doesn't just like them for their music, he (she) also likes their personalities, understands what the band is trying to accomplish. He (she) can criticize them, but will never desert them. This is my opinion of course, which is all I can offer.

Christa42 22-01-2012 04:41 PM

I think the fact that CP and Rhi will perform together and Adele might perform will make this years Grammys one of the most watched ever. I haven't been this excited for this show since Coldplay and Radiohead performed a few years ago

mrman78 22-01-2012 10:33 PM

If they do the Xylobands, and mix PoC up a little (a la Politik - well maybe not quite that different) it might not be so bad. I just don't want it to be an exact replica of the album version. They need to do something different with it to wow everyone :)

Christa42 08-02-2012 01:21 PM

I hope this is the right thread but i read this little article and thought the last para para paragraph was funny

From Spin Magazine on who they think should win this year

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
Tony Bennet & Amy Winehouse - “Body and Soul”
The Black Keys - “Dearest”
Coldplay - “Paradise”
Foster the People - “Pumped Up Kicks”
Who Should Win: Coldplay
Why: Fuck you, we like this song.

I'm staying up all night next Sunday, they'd better pull an epic performance and win something.

TraceOddity 10-02-2012 12:55 AM

I do hope they win something, but I'm not going to be home to watch it.Sorry, Coldplay, but I'll catch the highlights in MM.:)

kittybitty 10-02-2012 03:09 AM

I'm going to try to sit through it, will switch over every time Adele wins something.

Car Kids 10-02-2012 03:09 AM

IMO Coldplay is absolutely going to win at least once. I mean they are doing the show to honor sir Paul, they played a charity concert for Grammy in the schools this summer, they are performing at the show, and they have won and performed at the Grammys before.

Also I think that the award they are most likely to win is etiaw for best rock song.

roche714 10-02-2012 04:47 AM

i was just watching entertainment tonight or one of those shows and they were showing a floor plan of the Grammys and who will be sitting where.

They mentioned the duet with Chris and Rhianna and then they pointed out where Chris will be sitting and said that he will be sitting next to his wife,Gwyneth PAltrow.I would love to see that.

Mimixxx 10-02-2012 01:15 PM

I'll eat my feet if they sit together. :P I'm sure the Grammy producers would love them to be sitting together but I'm sure Chris will take one look at it and immediately veto it.

I really quite nervous about this. Chris is never on top form at award shows, add the pressure of Rihanna and him being sick... We'll see I guess...

DITTO... I will eat my hat... Or something:lol: I just don't see this happening:rolleyes:
Dianne and Jason went to the Charity show, and if Chris was sick, well, they said it was one of the best things they ever saw, so hat's off to him if he was sick:kiss:

teernabh5 10-02-2012 01:33 PM

I am really scared as to what will happen at the grammys. I have some doubt about if they will win or not . Though I am completely obsessed with coldplay I have to say that ETIAW And Paradise is not strong enough like the other nominees this year. Personally Mumford And Sons' The Cave is my pick. But I do hope they perform well and chris gets well! He is so cute if he gets an award and thats wonderful to see!

lili_pt 11-02-2012 12:45 AM

I haven't read the whole thread so I'm sorry if this has been answered before: will there be a live streaming for this show? I really wanted to see it live and I have no idea if it's being broadcasted here.
