This thread (if it takes off) will likely spread out into wider discussions on the media but I just wanted to start a discussion on the way that the news reports certain events, and the events they choose to report on. I could also sit here all day and talk about some of the methods of gaining the images and information that they then report on but I'll keep it restricted to this.

Some of you will have heard of the Daily Mail sidebar of shame. On the online site it used to be filled with women in bikini's. Someone too fat, someone too skinny, someone too something. Always 'too'. And there'd be a feast of perverted photo's and teasing captions to get the click required to meet their advertisers needs. Such click bait is a very obvious way of doing things though, it is instead more respected media outlets that trade in on misery that are starting to annoy me just as much.

On the BBC at the moment there is a link to a story titled Girl 'repeatedly raped by group'. No other information is given, only this. They are aware that people who are clicking on it will not know anything about the case or who the people in question are, otherwise they would have given more detail in the headline. Instead they have decided that to get more people to click on the link they would go with that headline. I just find it weird because I got a real urge to click the link to find out more but I'm not sure I agree with the tactics used. I find myself debating whether we should be more euphemistic in our approach to these things, or whether we could confront the truth. Simply in terms of headlines to click on I think a little more tact could have been used.

Basically, anyone wanna discuss something about that?

I'm finding it hard to think of anything to say about myself... Uh, name, okay, my name is Shameez and I am from South Africa.

I first heard Coldplay ages ago, but only really started loving them about 3 to 4 years ago. I went to their show in 2011 and will forever be wishing I can see them again. What an experience.

Anyway, hi

London: 'Soldier beheaded' in street in suspected terrorist attack near Woolwich

PM asks Home Secretary to chair meeting of Cobra, the Government's emergency committee

A man believed to be a soldier has been beheaded in an attack on a street near the Woolwich barracks in London, witnesses report. Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford confirmed tonight that two men were shot by armed officers.

Prime Minister David Cameron has described the killing as "truly shocking" and has asked the Home Secretary Theresa May to chair a meeting of Cobra, the Government's emergency committee dealing with incidents that have implications for national security. He is returning to London early from an EU meeting.

The Government is reported to be treating it as a suspected terrorist incident. Mrs May tonight confirmed she has been briefed by the Director General of the Security Service MI5 and the Met commissioner Sir Barnard Hogan-Howe on the "sickening and barbaric'' incident in Woolwich.

She said: ""It has been confirmed to me that a man has been brutally murdered this afternoon in south-east London. Two other men were shot by armed police and they are currently receiving treatment for their injuries."

The Press Association is reporting that one Whitehall source said the attackers were heard to shout 'Allah Akbar'.

Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford said in a statement: "At approximately 1420 we were called to reports of an assault in John Wilson Street, Woolwich, where one man was being assaulted by two other men.

"A number of weapons were reported as being used in the attack, and this included reports of a firearm. Officers including local Greenwich officers arrived at the scene and shortly after firearms officers attended the scene. On their arrival at the scene they found a man, who was later pronounced dead. At this early stage I am unable to provide any further information about the man who has died. Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police. They have both been taken to separate London hospitals. They are receiving treatment for their injuries."

Several witnesses described seeing a "beheading" as a man was reportedly attacked with a machete-style weapon and dumped in a south-east London street. Woolwich and Greenwich MP Nick Raynsford said he understood that a serving soldier was dead. The Ministry of Defence have not confirmed whether the dead man was a soldier.

London Air Ambulance confirmed a man was found dead as one patient was airlifted from the scene, while another was taken away by road ambulance. One witness, identified only as James, said he and his partner saw two men attack a young man aged around 20 like he was "a piece of meat".

"They were hacking at this poor guy, literally," he told LBC radio. "They were hacking at him, chopping him, cutting him. These two guys were crazed. They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there."

"They were oblivious to anything, they were more worried about having their photo taken, running up and down the road."

Local head teacher David Dixon told the BBC News Channel he walked out of the school gates and saw a body lying in the road a short distance away, he then heard gunshots. "All the traffic had stopped. There were gunshots after that so I am not sure about the situation after," he told BBC News.

"But all I needed to know was that there was an emergency and we needed to go into our emergency procedures to make sure that the children were as safe as possible. That was my main priority. We got all the staff to get the children in because some of them were outside doing activities. We locked all the gates. I and some of my senior staff liaised with police to find out what we needed to do after that."

He said the air ambulance had landed in the playground of the school.
Microsoft unveils Xbox One console

Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox One which will go on sale later this year. The next-generation console was shown off alongside a new Kinect sensor and a redesigned gamepad.

The US firm described the voice and gesture-controlled machine as an "all-in-one" system offering games, live TV, movies and music. The firm's Entertainment and Devices Division accounted for $9.6bn (£6.3bn) worth of sales in Microsoft's last financial year.

That only represented about 13% of its total revenue for the period - but one analyst said the importance of this launch should not be underestimated. "Microsoft is very strong in business software and the enterprise cloud business, but its consumer businesses are facing tremendous challenges: PCs are declining rapidly and Windows Phone handsets have only a fraction of the market shares of rivals," said Jia Wu from consultants Strategy Analytics.

"Xbox represents Microsoft's core strategy in the consumer entertainment market, especially after it sold its Mediaroom video distribution business to Ericsson earlier this year. This is also the unique asset which Microsoft has that can differentiate itself from Apple, Google and several of the other large tech companies."

Microsoft's decision to show off its new hardware in the opening minutes of its presentation sharply contrasted with Sony's PlayStation 4 press conference in February when the Japanese company decided not to reveal the look of its machine - a move that was mocked by some commentators.

Despite earlier speculation, Microsoft's machine does not require an always-on internet connection and will run second-hand games - the firm told the BBC it would provide more details about this "in the coming weeks".

The Xbox One sees Microsoft add a Blu-ray drive and Skype functionality to its console, incorporate vibrating feedback into its gamepad's triggers, and upgrade the Kinect camera's sensor to 1080p high definition resolution. It said the new Kinect would be better at analysing body movements, allowing users to more accurately control games characters and navigate other entertainment options.

"When you're exercising, it can read your heartbeat," claimed the firm. New tools will also allow users to record and edit gameplay so clips can be easily uploaded to the web.

EA Sports was first to announce new titles for the machine revealing Fifa 14, Madden NFL 25, NBA Live 14 and the fighting game UFC would all launch on the platform within the next 12 months using a new games engine called Ignite. It said the new machine allowed it to carry out four times as many calculations a second as the Xbox 360 and 10 times more "animation depth and detail".

Microsoft Studios also revealed that Forza Motorsports 5 - the latest in its own racing car franchise - would be available when the console launched. The division added that it planned to release 15 games within the console's first year, eight of which would be new franchises.

Activision also provided a first look at the next title in its Call of Duty series - Ghosts. It will use a new games engine to take advantage of the Xbox One's improved graphics capabilities, offering more detailed textures for human skin and other features. The title will also be released on rival platforms.

French publisher Ubisoft was not part of the launch, but took the opportunity to announce that two games in development - Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - would be available for the Xbox One before the end of 2013.

The company's chief executive, Yves Guillemot, said he was excited by the opportunities offered by the machine's improved specifications. "We believe it will reinvigorate the industry," he told the BBC. "There's a huge step up in graphics and there's a big step up in terms of memory as well.

"It will take time to take full advantage of the machines because we'll have to learn how to best optimise the technology - but even from the beginning you will see a huge difference between a game on the two different generations."

Much of the presentation was dedicated to the console's non-gaming features including its ability to make video calls; trigger live TV and online movies by voice command; and run several progams simultaneously without any apparent drop-off in performance. Time was also given to promote an upcoming live-action television series based on Microsoft's Halo games franchise which movie director Steven Spielberg is working on. The firm said tie-in interactive content would be offered exclusively to the Xbox One.

"Where Nintendo's approach to next-gen gaming seems to ignore the need to share time with television and other forms of entertainment, and Sony's approach seems willing to share the space, Microsoft's vision is to so blur the line between different forms of entertainment that switching from game to television or movie watching will be as simply as flipping between television channels," said Brian Crecente, news editor at games site Polygon.

"More importantly, it is lining up to make its system the one through which all entertainment happens. If it manages to pull it off, the Xbox One could become the one jumping off point for all forms of entertainment."

News of a five-year deal with the US's National Football League - which will allow sports fans to call up statistics, video replays and information about what live events mean for their fantasy teams - may also appeal to Microsoft's domestic audience.

However, it did not discuss whether it was pursuing similar tie-ups for consumers overseas. Microsoft is planning to launch its new console at a time when many video games makers are trying to reduce costs. Electronic Arts, Square Enix and Activision Blizzard are among firms which have announced layoffs over the past couple of months.

But the updated machines may put the companies under fresh strain. Games engine developer Epic has warned that if studios want to take full advantage of the advances in graphics power that will be available, then their design costs could be double what they were when the Xbox 360 and PS3 launched.

"The additional rendering capabilities of these consoles will demand larger budgets for the marquee high-end games," said Lewis Ward, video games analyst at tech research firm IDC. "That creates a risky proposition for developers. But the costs are going to be mitigated to an extent - studios have said it will be easier to make games on next-gen platforms because they're going to be closer to the development environments that are common on the PC side."

Mr Ward was referring to the fact that Microsoft has decided to power its machine with an eight-core x86-based CPU (central processing unit) made by AMD rather than continue with IBM's PowerPC technology. The move means its console will run off a chip that is similar to those found in most PCs.
Ryan gosling was in Crazy Stupid Love with Emma Stone.
Emma Stone hosted SNL with musical guest Coldplay
And what song did they preform? Paradise.

That one was sort of easy, but you get the point.
Ill start it off:

Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed that Korean rapper Psy blanked her husband Chris Martin at the Met Ball in New York because he didn't know who he was.

She said Coldplay frontman Chris had approached Psy and asked for a picture - but the Gangnam Style star did not recognise him.

The 40-year-old then explained to the rapper that their son is 'obsessed' with him and requested a picture.

Gwyneth apparently said: 'Our son is obsessed with Psy so we went up and Chris was like "Hello I'm from the band Coldplay." But Psy didn't seem to know who he was,' The Star reports.

She continued: 'So we said: '"We're sorry to bother you but can we have a picture for our children?" and he was happy to do it.'
The Iron Man 3 star said that he son Moses, seven, would be impressed with the snap and she said the couple later sent the snaps to him and their daughter Apple.

It seems that after the encounter Psy found out who the couple were and posted a snap of himself with the pair to his own Twitter page.

Psy, who has recently released his follow up to Gangham style entitled Gentleman, met a number of famous faces during the glamorous event in New York.

It seems that the Psy was thrilled to meet with Beyoncé and tweeted several snaps of himself with the hitmaker.

While Gwyneth was thrilled to meet with Psy she reportedly didn't enjoy herself at the ball.

Gwyneth who wore a fuchsia Valentino dress that had nothing to do with the night's punk theme, apparently branded the night 'boring'.

'I’m never going again,' USA Today quotes her saying. 'It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.'

Oklahoma tornado: Dozens killed in Moore

At least 91 people, including 20 children, are feared killed by a huge tornado which tore through Oklahoma City suburbs, officials in the US state say.

Worst hit was Moore, south of the city, where neighbourhoods were flattened and schools destroyed by winds of up to 200mph (320km/h).

About 120 people are being treated in hospitals. President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in Oklahoma. He also ordered federal authorities to join in the search efforts which are continuing throughout the night.

Monday's twister hit Moore, a suburb of about 55,000 people, at 14:56 (19:56 GMT) and remained on the ground for about 45 minutes. The official death toll is 51, but local authorities say the figure is expected to rise as another 40 bodies have been found.

The Oklahoma chief medical examiner's office said at least 20 children were among the dead. Plaza Towers Elementary school took a direct hit: the storm tore off the building's roof and knocked down walls.

"The school was flattened. The walls were pancaked in," Oklahoma's Lt Gov Todd Lamb told the BBC. "There's still roughly two dozen children that are missing. There have been some bodies recovered from that school and it's absolutely horrific and devastating."

Another school - Briarwood Elementary - was also damaged, and teachers were later seen leading pupils out to safety.

Oklahoma Gov Mary Fallin said it was a "tragic" day. More than 200 Oklahoma National Guardsmen as well as out-of-state personnel have been called in to assist the search-and-rescue effort.

The BBC's Alastair Leithead in Oklahoma says many of tornadoes in the region hit the open plain, but this one struck a residential area.

Many houses are built on hard ground without basements, so many people did not have recourse to shelter, our correspondent adds. Shocked survivors spoke of the tornado's power.

"We locked the cellar door once we saw it coming, it got louder and next thing you know is you see the latch coming undone," survivor Ricky Stover said. "We couldn't reach for it and it ripped open the door and just glass and debris started slamming on us and we thought we were dead, to be honest."

Okay, so a couple of days ago, the oracle answered a question about some band named "Mylo Xyloto" about only having a single song, and no information on the band. I looked into it, and I found the "bands" iTunes page. http://bit.ly/1437jIy
(click through to find the bands page)

The song on the single sounds like UFO sound effects set to very Coldplay-esque soundscapes. On the page, there is also an album called "S.O.S." with each track listed as a different number. Each song preview sounds like something Coldplay would release. The weirder thing is that when you google search this album, you can get to a listing on some website with the album, and previews for each song ( http://www.myfreesound.com/album/id:.../tid/479264621 )
When you click on the preview button (at least on my iPad) it gives you a link to an embedded YouTube video, all of which haveing to do with Coldplay, most durring the mylo era. Does this have something to do with Coldplay? Are these the B-Sides we never got, just secret? Or should I just take off my tin foil hat and go sit in the corner and think about my life?
