View Full Version : Princess of China: Worst Coldplay song ever?

For me it is. There has actually NEVER been a Coldplay song that I hated from the beginning - I did so with PoC. Has anyone else thought about this being the actual 'Worst song of Coldplay ever'?

Yes it is. But one correction, is a Rihanna song.

Lost is terrible, this has a really good vibe to it IMO, after a few listens I'm starting to really like it, Rihanna definitely sounds better when she's not singing her own songs :P

I think ETIAW barely edges out PoC, but yes, I hate this even more than Paradise. (all 3 are in my bottom 5)
Nothing can be worse than Lost+.
I hate Lost+ but at least 75% of that is still a Coldplay song.

And the new style (do not get me wrong I'm old coldplay fan I just think this good refreshing change) :)

agreed. but that one 25% can still spoil the rest of the song. and you can always just skip once you get to the Jay-Z cameo :laugh3:
PoC doesn't have that luxury though, so if you don't like it you'll just have to skip the whole song.
no its not the worst is one of the best songs of coldplay i also liked rihanna but not as the same as i love coldplay its a beautiful song

Hmm I actually really like Jay Z's Part in Lost - but I like how that was on an EP - rather than the actual album. Would have prefered Rihannas part as a B side or something because I just love chris's voice far too much to loose it on a song
Violet

Is it their worst song? Nope. Is it a good song? No, not really.

I'll agree in the sense that these choices make more sense to me for "worst Coldplay song" than PoC. "The Goldrush" is really kinda cheesy (in a not-so-good way), and O2D is just...well, y'know.

I said Rihanna isn't even one of the top 5 reasons why I hate this song. I feel I should list those 5 reasons:
- Terrible synth usage that's even more overbearing than in Paradise
- Aforementioned synths completely bury any actual instruments, making 3/4 of Coldplay members useless
- Even that 4th Coldplay member - Chris - is barely noticeable on this song as he has the minority of vocal parts
- Shit lyrics that are either for toddlers ("I wanna be a princess!") or just lazy as hell ("Lalalalalala oooooooooh")
- It's Coldplay writing an R&B song, for crying out loud
Rihanna is Reason #6. :laugh3:

I like it. I don't love it but I like it. Something different. The screaming synths I love. I've never been a fan of the circus that is Rihanna but she does a good job on the song and I can see plenty of people loving this song. This board isn't the be all and end all for gauging musical opinion. Plenty of people out there love this song but you're not going to find many on here.

You seem to all be forgetting about a little ditty called WHAT IF.
Easily the worst Coldplay song ever.
Anyway, I think that hating on this song just because it doesn't use "real" instruments is just...stupid. Ignorant. Piano and guitar aren't the only "real" instruments, you know. Synths are perfectly good instruments, and I for one refuse to dismiss a song based on their usage.
Now, whether or not the synths are used WELL...that's a different story.

Already done, my friend. I have at least a dozen bands I would currently place ahead of them, probably more. Coldplay had begun losing me with Viva but I chose to stick with them because they still had redeeming qualities in my eyes. Now they've lost me altogether and I can't even consider Coldplay as one of my favorite bands anymore.

Honestly, no. I actually think Rihanna did her job well in the song. It's just... I don't know, not Coldplay-esque enough to me? If I happened not to recognize Chris' voice I swear I wouldn't know this is Coldplay.
But the obvious reason is, I just don't like it.

I don't think it's their worst song when they have came up with A spell a rebel yell and chinese sleep chant, the songs that I really can't stand, but personally I really miss the boys in the song. There's a difference between blindly conforming and liking everything a band has done and then just throwing round bullshit statements of "it's 75% Coldplay" or "it's a Rihanna song really". If I'd have put my heart and soul into a song, I would want my effort to be recognized and not dismissed in the way that it has been by some. That word "respect" again.

You know, after I've listened to it quite a few times now, it's starting to grow on me a teeny little bit, I guess, I don't like to say it, but for the sake of Coldplay, I'm going to say it's a half decent song and not their worst, but still, I wouldn't class it as a 'good' song, because let's face it, it isn't, it's mainstream, synth pop garbage, which is a lot of what I hate, but as long as Chris' voice is there to guide me through the downside of the album, I'm content with it :inquisitive:

I don't think it's the worst Coldplay song... It's the worst Coldplay song so far. For me, it's down there with Paradise (and Lost, but at least that one still sounded like Coldplay).
First of all, it's not Rihanna's fault. She does a good job. The song suits her better than Coldplay. In fact it sounds more like Rihanna feat. Chris Martin to me.
But, as a Coldplay song, it's really bad...
1. The lyrics lack any deep meaning and the whoas and ooohs and lalalas are spread around the song to make it catchy. This is just unsubtly, unashamedly screaming for big record sales and conquest of every hit list.
2. Instrumentally, the song is drowning in messy synths, basses and R&B beats with additional bells and whistles. Jonny seems completely gone and Will doesn't show any of his skills. It's not Coldplay at all.
This song really has nothing in my eyes. It's actually terrifying me that everybody seems to like it so much (I'm not saying no one should like it, it's your own opinion of course). It makes me think that I'm wrong and I'm alone. If this is the new direction Coldplay is taking, I'm very heartbroken. I never thought they would go down to this level of collaborating with superstars (I thought Jay-Z was a one-of that would pass relatively unnoticedly) and milking all the sellout tricks like popular hit radio artists do. I always thought it was great that Coldplay stood out in the hit lists by just making their own music minding their own business in the sea of cheap artists. With this song, that is completely gone. I feel like they cheated on me.
Of course, teens are going to love it and they'll think they love Coldplay because of this song, though they'll never know about the history of the band. This kind of song will become the definition of Coldplay and as a Coldplay fan, people will associate my favourite band with Rihanna and Princess Of China. That will make me feel terrible. It makes me feel disoriented and disconnected.
Anyway, just my two cents.

Thank you!
I respect that they put out a version of Lost with Jay-Z. They're friends and why not try to collaborate? But they made it subtle, which means that version was not on the album, it was basically just a b-side. Now there's this huge blown-up collaboration on the album and it makes you wonder why. It would've made so much more sense to put it on Rihanna's album, make it a Rihanna-song and not a Coldplay-song.

This Rihanna collab works a hell of a lot better than the Jay Z one. Jay Z pops up in that song and stalls it like a man dressed up as a chicken blocking cars at a zebra crossing. Utterly bizarre and pointless.

I didn't say I think it's a great collaboration. He's just rapping over Jonny's solo that I actually quite like, so I'm not listening to that version. It's only a b-side anyway.
PoC isn't though and if I want to listen to MX as a whole (the oh so great word "concept album" pops up) then I have to listen to this for me awfully displaced and completely overblown collaboration.

Well,You've put it very nicely but we should remember that it is only one song, one of many. (Perhaps not the best, but maybe not the worst) If you do not like it, hear it not. There are great and emotional songs with a lot of depth (Us against the world, even though I have not heard the album) here, recalling the initial Coldplay times. I think that we should make a positive opposite. We have the new direction that many might not like to be but we have a lot of classic Coldplay, so this will be something for everyone. And who knows, maybe new fans of the band also deal with the older pieces, and would enjoy. That would complete the circle back and make everyone happy.

The new album is a combination of acoustic folk, pop rock/R&B, prog rock, and alternative rock. It's a bit of everything they've done before, plus more.
LOLno. Sorry, it just comes off as an unorganized mess to me.
1. "For the sake of Coldplay?" Really? Why does that matter? Why not just speak your mind without keeping them into consideration?
2. Not all synthpop is bad. Just so you know.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...Rihanna actually sounds sooo good on this track omg. u guise. Stop it.

@ Ronnie: Well, yeah, indeed, I'm just afraid that they will continue in this PoC direction. Now they have something that's reminiscent of the old Coldplay and something completely different. I'm afraid they will leave the vintage stuff behind and fully concentrate on PoC-like music. Don't worry, even if the chance is not so great, I'm just mentally preparing for the worst.

YouTube users are the idiot scum of the earth and are blind worshipers of anything and everything, yet the top-viewed video for PoC currently has a 30% dislike ratio, way higher than anything else you'll find by Coldplay. That says quite a bit about the casual reception.
I didn't like "Lhuna" either but that didn't make it onto an album (did it ever even get a proper release aside from low-quality rips from the RED site?)

Before I go on my (hopefully short) rant I'd just like to say that I'm baffled at how so many Coldplay fans can disagree on so many things when it comes to our taste in music. I guess it's to be expected though.
1) I think most the people who don't like PoC are the same ones who either A) haven't ventured out into other genres of music or B) just don't like other styles.
I'm inclined to believe that most haven't even given other types of music a chance. To those who have, that's fine, not everyone likes everything. Some like vanilla, others like chocolate, and some enjoy both :D
2) Before I became a CP fan I listened to a lot of rap (Tupac, Bone Thugz, etc), Rock, Pop, Country, whatever have you. I've been musically rounded so to me the new style is a "Coldplay-ized" version of different genres, which at first I didn't like, but now I *LOVE.*
3) Chris Martin recently said that Kanye West had redefined the way we interact with music in the sense that (my interpretation here) before we had metalheads here, hip hop fans there, and people were in their own musical box. It's this last decade that we've mashed up different styles (Jay-Z + Linkin Park, etc) and produced something completely different. I'd embrace it, I think it's great. I'd hate it if CP was 5 albums in and sounding the same. Give us a few songs that are oldplay, but give us something fresh too. That's how bands get boring, they just redo what they've always done. CP is better than that. They venture out, they dare to incorporate new styles and develop.
4) Rihanna's voice is beaut, and the song is a toe tapper. It is also a grower - you need to give it a few listens for it to hit you. When I first heard Every Tear I hated it, but now I love it. It's brilliant. Here's the problem: Most people who call these tracks terrible are comparing it to an unrealistic expectation: For Coldplay to dish out the same types of songs. If you're comparing it to Parachutes and A Rush of Blood then yes, these songs are completely off from those sounds. But if you judge it for what it is, I think there's no denying they did a great job, even if you don't like the new genre/style they're adopting.

Wow, a polarising track this one!
Personally I love it, and I think I would really like to hear a Chris Martin solo album at some point in the future.
My opinion is that Jonny, Will and Guy let Chris have one of his solo compositions appear on a 'Coldplay record'. For me PoC shares the same DNA with "Me and Tennessee", "All Good Things", "Lhuna", etc. - when he writes without the input of the rest of the band, he writes from a more poppy sensibility (which seems to be the bone of contention amongst so many of you).

I can't stand Chris's semi-rapping, it's as bad as Robbie Williams's white boy rapping.
:laugh3:
I think the Rihanna thing's the third reason here. But your main reason is that it's synthy and it's poorly written.
QuestionsOfScience
25-10-2011, 09:53 PM
I really quite like it, the beat's brilliant, I like the synths, Chris's vocal rhythm is funky as hell. I think we could have done without Rihanna doubling up the guitar riff during the refrains though and they could have sung together a hell load more in the chorus. Vocals are far too quiet as well, and there could have been a whole lot more from the other members, I get how they're sort of metaphorically standing aside for her but come on, it'd be better with a great chunky guitar line playing at the end and some more thumping bass.
Schröder
25-10-2011, 10:04 PM
Imo, this song could've been recorded much better than it is. Rihanna lacks emotion and doesn't even sound like herself sometimes. Jonny could use more prominence and the song does not build up properly to the end.
Somehow, I got the feeling that this is another song that sounds much better live. Strange, considering the amount of studio effects and synthies.
But come on guys, that's not their worst song ever. The song itself is brilliant.

Since Chris is a man, when he sings the chorus it sounds like intense as he has to put more effort into hitting the higher notes than a girl like Rihanna.
When Rihanna sings the chorus it just sounds like shes sitting down, just going like, "alright, yeah whatever. Sing Sing Sing" (That's the only way I can put it :P)
But when Chris sings it sounds more intense and makes the chorus more epic.

I remember when I first heard this...I thought it was gonna be my favourite new song. It ends up being the worst song which is pretty ironic.
The early version is definitely better, the bass line is so clear! So much better.

Please, I get that some people don't like Coldplay making pop songs (which is nothing new) but PoC is far from being foreign territory. It's not my favorite song on MX, but it's not my least favorite either. It's catchy, has a good beat and it's them trying something new.

I don't mind PoC, although I liked the live versions better. I don't like the "cause you really hurt me" part at the end, but up until then it wasn't bad. Definitely not my favourite Coldplay song though. :P

I think the live version is much better, but not because of Rihanna, but because of that silly beat. The studio beat sounds much too relaxed and laid-back. It lacks the tension of the pounding live version; there is no climax towards the end. The live version gives me chills.

I don't understand the hate towards PoC
I understand that this isn't your typical Coldplay song but that is what's so awesome about Coldplay...they try out different things; they grow as artists. That's the whole point of having a long career; you have to re-invent yourself.
If they did the same things over and over, it would get boring not only for us the listeners but also for them. There are only so many "The Scientist" or "Fix You"'s they can do. We need to allow them grow and let their creativity flow.
Personally, I am not a big Rihanna fan but her voice sounds very pretty on here. The ONLY thing I don't like about the song is that it has more Rihanna than Coldplay.

I love it, It would be better without Rihnna, but I can deal with it. For those who say "it's not real coldplay" this song is really not 'very comercial', you see, there is no propper chorus, just oooaaahhs. In My Place is much more comercial than Princess Of China for example, yes it is a pop song, but what's the problem with that? I thought everybody loved Viva La Vida, it's just as pop as PoC.

A song doesn't have to have a chorus to be commercial. Many modern pop songs don't, as well as many, many classic songs not having them either.

I'm just gonna put all my opinions in one comment
PoC is a good song. Sure, it's not the coldplay we're used to, but as a song it's good, not great though.
I'm pretty sure most of you don't like ETIAW/Paradise because they're singles.. and PoC because it's 99% gonna be a single.
I personally don't like Talk, or many of the b sides of AROBTTH (I Ran Away, I Bloom I Blaum etc)
And I'm in love with Hurts Like Heaven and Charlie Brown at the moment :)
My first 2 posts? they are about how I don't like PoC. Finished. What's negative about that? I love almost every other track Coldplay made. What would that make me then? & if i'm ridiculing the guy, let him speak for himself. NOT you.Wow, okay ...
Erhm, no. I can still say whatever I want. Just like you took the liberty to react to his post, I took mine to react to yours.
Don't liking a song is being negative, imo. It just struck me, since those were the only posts you made on the board so far and instead of having a post of how much you liked a song or Coldplay it was only about how you dislike a song. (= negative)
I don't know why you ask what that would make you, because I never suggested you hate Coldplay or the album or whatever you mean by that. I only said your posts are negative. Sure you can love almost every track of them, but we can only make up as much about you as you post on this board. Which was at that point ... only that you think that PoC sucks.
I wasn't planning on going so much into it, but then again, since you replied :D

I find Chris doing his little rapping interesting, and it sounded kinda good - but I think not that great.
That and paltry lyrics, and that you listen to the album and the song comes out of nowhere feeling like it exists purely because 'HAY WE CAN DUET WIF RIHANNA NAO LOL'
Two good singers cannot a good duet make with rubbish lyrics!

Actually, I don't think so.
Sure, Rihanna coming in is a bit jarring but I think their voices go together well. I have found that a lot of the songs on Mylo Xyloto need to be listened to through good earphones to be fully appreciated, unfortunately not an option for everybody. I'm lucky to have good in-ear headphones so I can. The production, for a start, sounds 10x better through headphones- on all the songs, HLH, DLIBYH, POC... and Princess Of China especially, I think, sounds terrible through speakers or computer speakers, but really bombastic and complex through earphones. Try it.
