View Full Version : What do you think of the HLH studio version?

Well now that it's out, let's discuss it!
I think it's awesome, the double tracked vocals and spacey and distorted guitars are awesome! I'd give it a 9/10, on only one listen! What does everyone else think?

It sounds a lot different to the live version. I think I prefer the live version, although it'll grow on me.
LOVE IT, that raw guitar riff!!
Absolutely love the live versions but this seems way too overproduced. Hopefully it'll grow and I'll get used to it but not really liking the opening to this album too much so far :(

REALLY but REALLY overproduced. With a simpler production it would have been 10/10, seriously, but I think there are so much noises and zero space to breath in it... Shame. :(
(Is it me or the drums sound way too much?)

Beautiful!
Perfect!
Of course we can't compare live and studio versions. Such rock songs works always better with a crowd and on a big stage...nothing new. Still a masterpiece.

I love the effects, I never thought I'd say that some months ago. But I love this song, they couldn't ruin it if they tried.

I totally agree, I was really looking forward to HLH too :(
I absolutely love HLH album version. After the epic MX opening (which is even better than live) it really kicks the album in the right direction!

blown away. that's all i've listened to so far off the album.
i didn't expect it to be mixed so weird and awesome.
eno really did a good job. he's making coldplay sound edgier yet without sacrificing feeling.

It sounds too clean but other than that, love it
It does sound too clean. I prefer the raw sound the live versions had. The robot Chris voice will probably take some getting used to, but this song is still one of the best off the album, in my opinion!
ETA: MX sounds soooo good.

They ruined the studio version of that song w/ those stupid auto-tune/synth vocals.

17-10-2011, 04:16 PM
I like it, and it will probably grow on me more, but it just doesn't "sit" right with me yet. I think it lacks some of the urgency and punch of the live version. I quite like how it seems to build towards a climax, but the first half is just slightly "hollow" for me at the moment.
DukeNewcomb
17-10-2011, 04:29 PM
Definitely too many effects in it. If it was as stripped and raw as the live versions, as a single it'd have gone Number 1 without too much effort, but as it is I don't think it would fare too well.
The Duke

Had they just left the vocals alone it would have been great, I don't like what they did with those all that much, still a great song though.

It's growing a little on me, but I'm still really disappointed with the vocal effects, especially in the beginning - it almost sounds as if Chris is a robot singing underwater...ridiculous. But I guess it's easy to get used to, and the guitar is awesome.

Where is Johnny's guitar riff in the verse? :/
It's a fantastic opener. It sounds a bit weird though, because MX swells up a lot during the end, and then it swells down again at the start of HLH, like it isn't properly mixed or something.

i was one of the rare people who didn't really like the live version of HLH.
it was a cool song, but the rawness of the live version kind of made it uninteresting to me.
now, since the studio version of HLH is full of effects...
it's still a cool song and it's super interesting.
so after a handful of listens through the entire album... studio HLH is a favorite.

I started laughing, it was just sooo weird listening to the studio version!! I'm not sure I like it, def better live. We'll see, I will probably get used to it. Overall, the album does sound different than I thought it would be despite hearing more than half of it in live performances and early downloads from iTunes...I'm sure the album will be a favourite after a few more listens.

I promised myself I wouldn't listen to the leak but after all the comments I found I HjAD to listen to this song because it is one of my favourite CP songs.
Is it just me, or is it much faster than the live version? The clip I heard on YouTube sounds like its been run through a pitch shifter, kinda like when you change the playback speed on a record player?
Don't want to listen to a high quality version until Monday but thought it was a tad quick and slightly enoxified! Hoping it will grow on me like ETIAW did.

Got to applaud Coldplay for wanting to experiment with Chris's voice. Some may not like it (typically conservative Coldplay fans) but this song just works in any way. Not only one of Coldplay's best ever songs on record and live, but arguably their best opener yet. It covers so much ground and by time the song is finished you could be forgiven that you've heard the whole album! And yes it's better than Politik!

I don't get it tbh :S i think they've taken the theme of "aliens; out of space" too far, everything seems just so distant and Fazed, I pray my mind will be changed next week when i hear the vinyl and a higher Bitrate source, but still i really am dissapointed thus far.

Where can I subscribe? You hit the point perfectly. As always.
I'm proud that the guys are brave enough to make something new, different and fresh with the vocal work on this record. Just because the band is so big there'll be always criticism on everything new they do and also on everything they do the same way.
I love Hurts Like Heaven, nevertheless I consider the live version a little bit better, but thats not surprising with regard to the energy of the song.

respect your opinion but why does everyone have a problem with slow songs, there purpose is there so you slow down and think and provoke emotions and reflect. Why does everyone hate music that makes you think? is it too much work?

His voice on HUH reminds me in the last season of the TV show 'Lost' when Charlie's band Driveshaft had a pop remix of 'We All Everybody'. Sounds much better when he signs it live to me. I'll have to use the live version for my Coldplay hits CD that I use in the car.

Mmmmm.....
I gave it another couple listens and have decided that I am getting a sort of Viva La Vida feeling with this.
Although Viva La Vida is the very root of my Coldplay obsession, and I absolutely loved it the moment I heard it, I'm getting the same feeling with HLH.
I think I was just mad because I was used to hearing the rawness of the live version and not hearing all of the background voices.
1:15 on is when I got it... ARRGG the second verse is my absolute FAVORITE!
Now, I think this is my favorite song.

The studio version is a disappointment to me compared to the live version.
Whenever i listen to the live version hundreds of shivers run down my spine.
The studio version sounds so sterile. Almost like an electro remix.
It is staggering how the instrumentation and production can change one's feeling for a song.
It proves the song-writing abilities are still present but it's sad the production choke it all down.

This gets a 9/10 rating. It was always going to head that way. The live version gets a 10/10 version but this is still just a fan-bloody-tastic way to open a record. I've only heard this, Charlie Brown and Princess of China so far but I'm very much looking forward to the whole thing come Monday.
And to those crying into their beers over the supposed "butchering of Chris Martin's vocals" well...tough! I've heard more than enough Coldplay songs to be happy with clean, icy Chris Martin vocals but I don't expect, nor do I want same sounding vocals on every Coldplay track.
All in all with the vocal effects on this track it reminds me of what U2 did with Bono's voice on Zoo Station. Like that, these vocals totally work in every way.

have to say that my initial reaction to the studio version was not favourable - I like the rawness and energy of the live version better. Chris seems to be getting lost in the production of the piece (I get it, you naysayers - that's the point - experimentation, new musical paths, etc. etc.) After a summer of live performances, it seems to have lost some of its genuine passion - radio will love it though

some tonal issues with my copy - it can tide me over til the release in a few days when i get my link for download...but in the meantime i edited MX so the xylophone bit comes in almost immediately, fading into it until the actual part where it comes in on the original piece..makes it a little better for me seeing that it's closer to the live version.. i also made it a bit louder. I'll take it, and i love the song regardless.

It was always clear that the live version is a bit better than the studio one. Of course we always knew that and that's why I don't understand some reactions here. What do you expect? Live songs of Coldplay are mostly better, because they are a fucking great live band. And especially some energetic, upbeat, euphoric songs like Hurts like Heaven always work better with a crowd. With regard to this I enjoy the studio version which is different and thats why I like it so much. It makes it more interesting.
The studio version itself is mind-blowing for me. All the effects fits perfectly in the atmosphere and the outro is simply beautiful! It gives me chills everytime I hear it.
Hands down Coldplay. One of the best songs of all time and yes, even better than some other giants like Politik, Violett Hill etc. (imho).

I hear it too. My initial answer would be is that the leak was compressed to ****, whilst the CD is the best quality (other than a FLAC or lossless file) and therefore there is a ton more things going on and it sounds better.
I actually eschewed my normal practice of downloading (from 7digital or ITunes) in favour of picking up a CD as the quality will (hope I am right in saying this) be better on CD than on a compressed MP3 file?

I love it! It's so full of energy! :D But it is quite over produced...

First listen, i don't like it, the live versions sounded so much better. Why did they make it sound so overproduced?!

I don't know why everyone's so "of to many affects, bla bla". It sounds like shoe gazing to me, and the vocal effects are done very well. They remind me of Pink FLoyd or Tommarrow Never Knows. Overall it's probally one of the best songs on the album!:D

Well, I hated it at first...but wow, after listening a few times I think it is one of the best on the album. I love how it picks up on the 'concrete canvas' verse - epic!

I had the album on my big stereo speakers when I listened to it the first time...holy crap, I did have a seizure when the song kicked in, it's just so energetic, much better than the live version in my opinion!

I think both the live and studio versions are equally good. This probably my favorite track from the album. I love the fast tempo, it has me bouncing on my seat wanting to get up and dance. :)

I prefer the live version... too much of the vocals are overprocessed on this cut. I can't tell who I'm listening to at times. It's great when they let the natural splendor of the voices carry the song, as it tends to do in the latter half.
I also think the music is overproduced at times. Once again, when the song has life when they ease off on the effects. I hope it will grow on me over time, but I can't get the live version out of my frame of reference.

I feel like when they play live, the emotion of the song really comes out. And that's what made their previous albums so good, because that emotion and brilliance was translated onto the album. I think musically, this album is unique and brilliant in its own way. But with Chris's lyrics and singing, I think they took a wrong turn.
Hurts Like Heaven is a great example of a song, which really connected you with the graffiti and the concepts they were conveying through that song. But the studio version has lost that, and I don't get shivers listening to it as much as a song like "The Scientist" or "Moses". Sure there are a few moments on the album such as "Up With the Birds" or "U.F.O." or "Us Against the World", but they don't always completely grab my attention for their beauty. That's what made Coldplay great. They made music for people to listen to, because it was just amazing to hear. The production of this album has left a few good moments and a few really bad moments. I still enjoy this album as I do the others, but not in the same way.
I guess that's what they want us to feel with this album. But I think they should worry less about the popularity of their music, but instead on the message they are giving through it.

I really like it. The voice effect took a couple of listens to get used to, but now, it's as if there is no voice effect. However, I don't like the use of electronic drums, but that's about it.

Epic! But his voice sounds distorted for some reason, like i cant make up some of the words he is singing, thats the only fault of the song, but its one of my favs on the whole album.

I absolutely love both versions. After hearing all the live versions of HLH I was worried I was going to be disappointed. Yes, the studio version is quite different to the live versions... but to me they are both unique and great in their own way. This song really wants to make me dance! One of my faves on the new album.

When I first heard it, I did not like it. It has grown on me a lot but I still prefer the live version of it. There are too many effects on the studio version.

when i first heard it, i felt it strange... the atmosphere felt like i was in mars... lol. maybe im exaggerated. but when the song plays overtime with the opening song of mylo xyloto, they both have made such a great feeling to me. :D

I love the album version, but I do have a little problem is that in one part of Jonny's guitar solo, when it gets low at about 0:06 in the above video, the rhythm feels wrong compared to the live version - as if he's playing it more sloppily in a way that doesn't sound right.
^That video is brilliant though. :D

I do like the album version, it's brill, but... I think the verses need to be sped up a bit, particularly the opening couple. They just feel really slow, and seem to lack the energy from the live shows. I know it's studio, but I think speeding up the opening a bit may have helped...

The voice effects are so amazing and it does suit the theme of the album. It introduces that particular theme in this song aswell.

overall it's great but I prefer the live version....
by the way, it's very strange listening HLH on my ipod without the MX intro.
they should keep as one single track, like Yes/Chinese Sleep Chant.

I agree, but if they did, the intro would have been too long and when it's played on the radio, it would take a while for non huge COLDPLAY fans to know that it's Hirts Like Heaven.
I actually love the album. Amazing. And HLH studio is amazing. It shows their artistic side. The live shows their huge amazing raw talent.

I previously found it annoying with all this production effects, but now it's one of my favourite from the album, and I'd say it's better than the live version. It rocks !
Yeah, almost two months after I first heard the studio version I'm still addicted (and even getting more addicted) to this song. My absolute fav of the moment.

I'm glad that I hadn't watched the summer festivals before the album release. I see a lot of people complaining about the studio versions.
I heard all of the songs (minus the singles) for the first time when I got the album and I fell for MX instantly. HLH and CB were the main reasons why.
