lovers are gonna love. You can't please everybody, and obviously they didn't with this song.
So yeah, you can never really please everyone with music. We all have 'different' reasons for liking this band. I have never really been a Coldplay fan because of their lyrics. It's always been a music attraction, their music is really beautiful, and that seems to be extremely rare with music nowadays.
I really wasn't much of a fan of ETIAW. Both the lyrics and music weren't that good. I even change the station or turn the music down when that song comes on because I get the "what happened to your band dude" look or conversation. I tell them that they have other good songs and this is just one bad song out how many.
Part of me feels like I might get the same type of response to this song? Probably because the lyrics are unoriginal (being nice). The song title should be para-para-para-paradise instead. However, the music is GREAT. I really can close my eyes and enjoy the beauty of the music unlike ETIAW.
Back to my music before lyric point, it seems like they are writing the songs waaaay before any of the lyrics are composed. This album is a love story? Well, they wrote a lot of music that they liked and fit a bunch of cheesy lyrics into it. I think I can get over that, assuming the songs follow the sound of this instead of ETIAW.
Hate away on the lyrics if you want, I think a lot of us understand that. But the music? Sing a long because you love the melody, not the meaning. I think it really might help a lot of you.

lovers are gonna love. You can't please everybody, and obviously they didn't with this song.
The irony is that in their desperate attempt to please as many people as possible, they've done pretty much the opposite. Their best work came when they were being themselves, and now they're trying way too hard to be something that they're not.
Easier to accept than the possibility they could be selling out, but to be honest, that's not looking so inconceivable right now.

7. It's really good, could be better. It's unoriginal, reminds me of everything in the charts right now, and although that's not necessarily a bad thing, they have the capacity to do much better, and the "para para paradise..." gets on my nerves.

I gave it a 2. I'm just...really let down. I've never rated anything that low, not even a title or album art. I don't even know how I'd rate it if it was done by another band (it certainly doesn't sound like something from one I'd really choose to listen to) and I heard it randomly on the radio or something--I just can't get over that this is a SINGLE, technically a first one at that, from one of my absolute favorite bands.

I'mma punch Chris for including a line about 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall'. And repeating the 'para' as he did with 'wa-wa-waterfall'. Does he have a hidden stammer or something? It's actually gimicky and annoying.
If it wasn't for these two bugbears it would be a lot higher. For now I'm going to give it a 7 because I actually like it and it's not an offence to my ears unlike ETIAW.
ETA: I'm probably rating it higher than I would normally as it is so much of an improvement over ETIAW that I feel happier than I would if this was the first track I'd heard off Mylo Xyloto

Okay, I've listened to it four times so far. I find the melody quite intense, I really like the piano, it always sticks out as a particularity of Coldplay to me. No need to say that the Para-para thing is annoying. The lyrics is maybe a bit poor (?) - ETIAW quote included. Anyway, I gave it 7 for now - there's always a bit of excitement in the first vote, so... we'll see.

Listened to it twice. Second time, I mentally replaced all the Para Para bits with one long Paradise. It was much better :)
Honestly, a little too much on the pop side. The song also doesn't flow as much as usual in a Coldplay song, it seem to be in bits and pieces.
All in all though, decent song.
Kinda worried that they think this is single material when they have CB and HLH, but oh well.
Also, I like how Will has more and more backing vocals. Hopefully he gets a solo part somewhere on the album :)

Lol?
I'm sorry, but that's just a ridiculous thing to say. Coldplay was one of the bands that got me into music, and I'm sad to see them turn in this direction with their music. It's a real shame.
Lotus Flower was WAYYY better than this. Lotus Flower's LYRICS were amazing. The lyrics from what we've heard of this MX era are arguably mediocre. It was one of the only songs from that album that I enjoy, however, seeing I found King of Limbs in general to be incredibly boring for my tastes; and I'm a big Radiohead fan as well.

I like the song -- it's catchy -- but I can understand fans' frustrations and anger toward it as well. It's how I felt (and still feel) about "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" (and HOW 'every teardrop a waterfall' wind up in this song as well?!). And even though I like this, it still feels like they could do better. Some of it is definitely an expectations thing -- you expect them to do better or do things in a certain way, so you're disappointed. But there's the opposite too, as in, "I wouldn't even give this song the time of day if it weren't by Coldplay." And I'm feeling a lot of the latter with what I've heard off this album so far.

I can't believe, that they are doing some boring, regular pop stuff now. It is totally overproduced and the good melody is blown away with those Brian Eno drumloops-string-chorus-synt-shit. I think for their next album they should do two things.
1) Only allow acoustic guitar, piano, drums, electric guitar and bass guitar.

I don't get all the "hatred" (maybe that's a bit too harsh). What's wrong about the sound? That it fits perfectly into today's world? That more people than before will like Coldplay? Sorry people, saying that giving 10/10 makes us "12 year olds" is such an easy thing to say...I'm sure Coldplay will have great success with that song, and if you do not like it, bah - are they gonna care? Looking at the votes for the poll, almost half of us are 12 year olds, I'm pretty sure that I don't care about it - I still love the song! :)

I wish I could like the song, but it's going to have to grow on me. To me it lacks creativity, it lacks depth, it lacks emotional connection. It sounds like pop-fluff.
The fact they'd choose this as a single above Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Major Minus, or Us Against The World is beyond me. I woke up for this...

I've listened 5 or 6 times. Each time I favored it more. The first one minute of the song is beautiful. Very feel good(imagine what the video will be) The middle part is pop, yeah. The last minute or so, when Johnny's guitar kicks in does it for me. I have to admit, it's quite a surprise at the first listens. Until you really give it a better listen. Underneath it all, I still hear Coldplay.

COLDPLAY FANGIRL RANTY TIME!
First impression: It's like if Every Teardrop, Viva, and Fix You had a baby. Weird, yes, but definitely listenable, hooky, and tugging-at-your heartstrings anthemic.
I'm liking it, but not loving it. I sorta wish Charlie Brown was the single instead, but I can see why the boys picked this one. It's catchy as fuck, really pretty, and will do well on the pop charts and earn them more Grammy awards. It's good, yes. But is it great? Time will only tell. Haters gonna hate, likers gonna like, lovers gonna love. Coldplay is not a perfect band (how dare I type that!) and Mylo Xyloto, like all their other albums, will not be perfect either. But you gotta love the boys for trying!
Thus concludes my ramble.
BACK TO PARA-PARA-PARADISE...... WHOA-OH-OH-OH-OH~
((So yeah I actually love it, but these are my actual thoughts I had during the first three listens.))
THIS JUST IN:

Haha I'll agree to a certain extent as well, because he has written work that has once brought me to tears, even if they were incredibly simple. And he has written stuff that is very good. AROBTH (the song) has amazing lyrics. the Viva album in general I found to have amazing lyrics. Just hit my heart, and I'm sold. Give me real, don't give me fake; even if its so simple. Clearly Chris has contradicted himself with this effort. He needs to realize that his loyal fanbase is not full of teenybopper 12 year olds, rather adults and young adults who have grown up with them. :(

not the best or letīs say not my favourite of Coldplay, but I do enjoy it and i am pretty sure i will enjoy it live much more ..

As a massive fan of ETIAW (can't understand why so many don't like it, it's such a majestic, uplifting song), I have to admit to being a little disappointed with Paradise. I, like so many others on here, really struggle to even type words like that, but as well as being devoted fans I think we do have to be honest.
I really like the music and I think the strings and melody of the verse are really cool, but for me I expected more lyrically. We were told this was a 'narrative' song, so I really thought there would be more of a story here, which in turn would form a part of the bigger story of Mylo Xyloto. But it actually feels very thin in terms of what it actually tells us, by itself or as part of a larger work, and does unfortunately pass you by like radio-fillers Bruno Mars and Owl City.
I don't think for one minute that we should worry about MX, as Chris Martin has more talent in his little finger than most musicians have in their entire bodies, and I don't think we should ever criticise such great artists for creating and producing the art they want to. MX songs like HLH, CB, UATW, ETIAW and MM are all great, and UIF sounds awesome, so we're safe. I guess we just expect a little bit more from a song that must have been in gestation with our favourite band for ages - but maybe Paradise will be a grower. It left me quite cold on first listen, but in the last hour I have warmed to it more. Let's hope it gets hotter and hotter.

Ah, maybe then I should just take a break as well and come back when the board quiets down a bit. :P
8 out of 10. Really nice strings and synths. It just missing that special something which would put it up with Charlie Brown for quality this era.

GOSH people. some of you are acting as crying babies... Ok I guess it's ok if you don't like it. Wish you did, because I LOVE IT and I litterally feel like in Paradise .... yeah. pop-ish, catchy, and all that, but it's amazing.... clap clap Coldplay, they are SO consistent about everything in their career, so yeah... they did it again. Proud of them.

My thoughts before the first listen were "It had better not have anything like the 'wa-wa-wa-wa-waterfall' like ETIAW", and unfortunately, it did. I liked the start of the song, and the finish (Moyles ruined my first listen to the end, cheers), however the middle has poor lyrics again and a very repetitive tone. But having read alot of the comments, I think I agree with both sides of the argument. It's different from the Coldplay of old, maybe too different, but you don't get anywhere by standing still; they're moving forward. This song is for the pop crowd, the single which puts MX on the map for the new generation, who've maybe doubted Coldplay before, or not given them a chance. For Coldplay, the whole game is about the album, not the singles.
But at the same time, I think I would've preferred another song, e.g. Hurts Like Heaven or Charlie Brown, or another new one. For now though, I shall trust Coldplay's judgement. 6 from me.

Well, I'd say Paradise is better than Give Up The Ghost. That song was the worst (though the title is awesome).

It gets better the more you listen to it. (Same with ETIAW)
I donīt like some parts of the refrain, because it sounds a little bit like One Republic. But the rest of the song is really good.

7 - grows on you, listen a few times before you make up your mind. Sounds very boring and middle of the road on first listen but there is a bit more to the song.
The para-para reminds me of Chris' friend Rihanna's annoying umbrella-ella-ella.
Obviously will work well as a stadium rocker with the clapping and who-o-oahs already built in.

Hmm.. I would rather say Dm7, Bb, F, C.. So replace the E-chord with Dm7 and it sounds better.. at least to me :)

Here's my view:
First thing I did today was peeing, and then checking the board. Mistake. I was depressed before I'd even heard Paradise.
Was I the only one expecting this? It seemed clear they weren't gonna do a 'pure Coldplay' for their second single, because obviously they need a bigger audience, people. Come on, they've run out of money. :P
Anyway. Yesterday I liked the lyrics, but now they turned out to be repetitive and even feature every tear- SHUT UP! Ooh ooh's have become their trick, which is getting embarrassing. Para-para is also.... not my thing.
But I really love the rest, actually. It has a huge build. I got goosebumps at the second listen, which is a great sign. To me it's far better than ETIAW, maybe just because I was prepared this time.
Love the tempo, strings, bass, piano(!) and the great guitar. The off-sounding tone at the end and the odd chord somewhere halfway are very, very charming. Chris's voice - awesome. He sounds a little hoarse and more mature, it's gorgeous. That voice is still my favourite in the world and I keep falling for it. I can't help it.
I think if I don't let the negative comments get to me, I will very much enjoy this song. Call it my guilty pleasure. :escaping:
Er, I gave it an 8. (But then Politik would be 100.)
The only thing that seriously made me angry is Rihanna.
Rihanna?!
RIHANNA???!!!!!
I'm not defending you on that one, Chris.
I agree with the new fans theory. I feel a little betrayed they've chosen to appeal to a different, bigger audience. But if that's the band's choice, it's not like I'll be able to change it. Might as well enjoy it as much as I can.
My hopes are still high for Mylo Xyloto. It will be varied. It has Hurts Like Heaven :dazzled: and.... Rihanna :|.
I'm off to Paradise.

Well, after listening to the song several times I can say that I like it. Of course it's not Fix You, or The scientist, or GPASUUF but I have the feeling, as I have seen with other great musicians, their music has become ethereal. The music and lyrics are more conceptual and conceptual is not always well received. It seems to me a brave move on their part because staying with the essence of the things makes you bigger. I think they want the music to be the message, not the lyrics. Nevertheless, I think we have to wait until the album comes out to rate it.

I couldn't hear everything too much static... weird
But the little I heard from the beginning is heavenly I loved the cello I think there is cello and how vast it sounds like water or air undulations and Chris Martin's voice is so cute I can't wait to hear the whole thing, It made me breathe so Thank you so much Coldplay for another blissful song :)
I'm gonna give it a solid 5. It's not the worst pop song ever, but it's not the best either.

Well, just a short assesment (later more): At first I didn't like it.
After some listenings the songs grow in me - actually 8/9 of ten points. I'm fascinated how thei envolve their style, fascinated by the brave of Coldplay. Not everybody will like it.
By the way: Its such a shame how some haters behave. Make fun of the song, make it ridicolous. This is so childish! And its not what Coldplay deserves even if the new Single isn't Clocks (no wonder, or?) With regard to postings by Lore and Co. (always the same users!) I think it's an amazing song, and I've listened to it a lot already.
But, I do see that the direction Coldplay are taking are not too everyone's liking. Frankly, they're not too mine either - I would have loved Coldplay to become a lot more darker after X&Y (my favourite Coldplay album), and write more songs like Amsterdam and A Rush Of Blood to the Head with X&Y style production, and VLV was a huge disappointment for me. But MX is shaping up to be much better in my eyes.

I had planned not to listen to it before buying the album, however, after all these comments I caved...planning to be bitterly disappointed. I am thrilled to say that I really, really like it!
I don't listen to commercial radio so I don't know if it sounds like everything else. I like different artists for different things. I don't expect killer lyrics from Coldplay. I expect lovely melodies and this has that. On my first listen, that's what I hear--melody. And I'm a sucker for melody.
Art, all kinds, is personal. We all hear & view things differently. Whether we like or dislike a song has nothing to do with its worth. The only thing that matters is our personal reaction to it.

I gave it a 9. When I gave it the first listen I was way more confident than with ETIAW- which I thought was horrid in the beggining. 3 months later, ETIAW has grown up on me and I actually enjoy listening to it. Now, the beginning of Paradise is great- violins? Amazing! Yes, it is different that the previous albums but if we see it as a whole even Viva was different than Parachutes. The only thing is that every song I heard of the previous albums I fell in love with. Now I'm a bit sceptical but both Coldplay and us have matured and grown. So it's a new era. Still, great music.
About Paradise, I hated the every tear is a waterfall line- really? Was it necessary? The only thing that could make me hate it (the line) less is if they wrote Paradise first and got inspired by that lyric. Still... fail. The para- para- paradise is ok... I guess. But I agree that a long paradise would be way better.
But all in all, I like it. A bit more pop, different but still Coldplay. :)
If you're sceptical but gave it a nine then I'll just assume you are using a 1-20 scale. What's your favorite coldplay song? is it just 1 point better than Paradise in your opinion?

i liked the melody, but hate lyrics, i expected something more, some vibe of the sorts of Vangelis, and so far no 'wave'... that was a bit disappointing, i'm with Rudy on this, so far from 100 points (shall be 140 = 14 tracks) of interest about the new album mine has lowered 30 points at least... i reckon i'm waiting more for other new album releases in October.
i like that coldplay experiment and don't get stuck and all that but, but God that seems it'll be a Pectoralz album after all (remember chris thought to do a boy band with that name, well seems to me he is at it now).
* misses AROBTTH sound *
talking about collabs -a bit off topic- i'd prefer this one featured Enya, indeed that and a Vangelis vibe would had been Paradise listen to me really.
I'm smelling this album will be all Pop-like :disappointed: good for the new fans, but meh for the old who got into them thanks to their two first albums.
where is their saying they wanted to make the fans proud to be Coldplay fans? if i liked them is cause they weren't as manufactured pop at all. this new sound, so bad lyrics doesn't make me be a proud Coldplay fan at all.
sorry if is hard comment and they are reading it, but i'm being totally honest. i can't rate the song.

12-09-2011, 01:48 PM
I'm not going to go so far as to call them "sell-outs," and I really have no reason to believe the new direction is anything other than what the band wants.
But this is the first time I've heard a new Coldplay song and felt truly indifferent. I've listened to Paradise twice, and really that's enough. It's not a grower--it's a skipper. Coldplay can do "pop," and satisfy me. Viva la Vida is pop. Lost! is pop. But there is an element of songwriting put into those tracks that's lacking here.
Considering that Paradise would be the worst song on Parachutes, AROBTTH, and VLV (and pretty close to the worst on X&Y), I'll give it a 2.

I gave Paradise a 9 out of 10 because except for the ETIAW mention, it made me feel really good listening to it and I think it's better than the songs of MX that I've heard so far (ETIAW, MTM, MM- I avoid listening to the live ones).
Maybe I'll change my mind later, but for a first listen I though it's great. I mean, Mylo Xyloto is not out for another month. Maybe they are keeping the really great music for the actual album. ;)

VERY catchy.. My son who is 13, and NOT really a Coldplay fan, after two listens was singing it round the house! I think it will be a great single. I've had it on my brain too after a few listens this morning... humming it to myself at work all morning. It really gets bedded in there! Which is exactly what you want from a single, OMHO. :D
Not exactly what I was expecting, but the more I listen, the more I like it... It's not my favorite... not my worst... It needs time to bed in..
Would LOVE to hear it live.. then decide.

Eh...I've listened to it several times and I'll give it a 6. On the first listen I would've said a 4, but the more I've listened to it, it's kind of gone up, but I don't think it's ever going to get above a 6 for me.
I can appreciate what they are trying to do, but I'm just wondering how it's going to translate to being played live.
ETA: I'm a bit sad that Coldplay is going the synthpop route. Don't get me wrong, they do it well, but all the acts out there I can't stand are all synthpop acts. Maybe I'm a hipster as the memes suggest. I should put on my black hipster glasses and start complaining that Coldplay is too mainstream. haha! I guess you're right. Grading songs is difficult because in the end everything is hypothetical- every person sees it in a different way.
LiTii is -of course!- better than Paradise. When I first heard it (only music, in VLV) I was in awe.
Well, to answer you, supposing we give LiTii or Clocks, or Fix You a ten, then I'd give Paradise a 6. I guess I didn't vote comparing it to other tracks. Again, everything's hypothetical. Maybe we do need a 20 point scale. ;)

Fangirls are gonna be pissed at me, but I don't give a shit. It's my opinion, and I'm gonna post what I said on Tumblr:
"I don’t know about it.
When I heard the preview I thought I’d like it. So, I bought it off iTunes today.
Kind’ve feeling like I wasted a dollar now.
I just don’t like this Coldplay. This “dance” Coldplay. This “electronica, let’s not use real instruments and use synthesized sound and drum machines and distort Chris’s voice” Coldplay.
I miss the old Coldplay. And NO, fangirls, I don’t want them to make the same songs over and over again.
I just want them to feel like real artists again…. not international superstars.
Anyhoo, Paradise is okay I guess. There are some things I love and some things I really, really hate… this has become a reoccurring pattern with me and Coldplay songs. :[
The orchestra in the beginning sounds great… I’m just wondering if they were an actual, real orchestra or played off of a keyboard.
I like the fact that the drum sounds real. It’s just just a dance beat in this song, like ETIAW.
The piano sounds good with the orchestra in between verses, but they have some kind’ve clinking sound in the background and that just, really isn’t needed. Kind’ve takes away from the orchestra.
And the lyrics… they just…. they could be better, Chris. I know you. I love you. I know the lyrics you’ve been able to produce in the past and this just… it feels like you just don’t give a shit anymore. You’re not trying to make us think. You’re not trying to make us feel something great or absolutely terrible. You’re just trying to cover up the fact that you can’t write anymore with some synthesized sound.
I’m sorry.
It’s just… I’m so unbelievably disappointed in them."

Everyone has their own opinion and every right to it. I for one really like the song. At the start I wasn't so sure, but once it picked up I got into it. I don't think I'd like a Coldplay song just because it was put out by them. But I do like getting to hear new stuff from them. It's still Coldplay after all and still Chris Martin's voice. I can't wait for the whole album.
Maybe we do need a 20 point scale. ;)
What's your favourite?

Adam Young (Owl City) has released better stuff than Coldplay have as of yet in this new era.
Do NOT diss Owl City.
Srsly.
I wasn't 'dissing' Owl City, or Bruno Mars. They're good at what they do, but Coldplay have produced works of art that make you feel alive in ways no other band can. IMHO (and that's all it is), OC and BM make music that sounds nice on the radio, but that doesn't set my world alight. It was just a comparison, that the chorus of Paradise reminded me of something I'd not really notice on the radio.
The good news is that I've now listened to it on big speakers and the sound is immense, especially the bass. Still don't love the chorus, but it is growing on me.

I feel terrible for saying this and can't believe that these words are coming out of my mouth, but for the first time ever, I'm disappointed in a Coldplay song. Every Coldplay song I've heard so far before "Every Teardrop" has been brilliant, even on their EP's ("A Rush of B-Sides" and "Prospekt's March", except for "Lost+"). But guys, what are you doing? What's with all of the synthesizers? The repetitive lyrics? Where's the depth and creativity? I know they are trying something new, but I feel like they've pushed it way too far to almost where it's much more pop than rock. I loved the direction where they went with "Viva la Vida" because of the mixtures of instruments and sounds and the incredible lyrics, but this is just not that. "Every Teardrop" and "Major Minus" are good, "Charlie Brown", "Moving To Mars", "I Go To Rio", and "Princess of China" (the live one) are great (not Top 20 worthy but still), but "Paradise"....I don't even know. Plus the fact that they're including Rihanna in "Princess of China" just isn't Coldplay, but rather too much more mainstream. Their songs were always just Coldplay, no one else, and that showed that they were a standalone, incredible band. Why change it? I'm not asking for another "A Rush of Blood To The Head" or "Parachutes", I'm just asking for another Coldplay album, not pop album.

Lotus Flower and Paradise aren't very comparable songs, but I guess that wasn't the point of this thread.
Lotus Flower and TKOL is in general kind of "dull", but I love the whole album actually. I'm such a weirdo (and a creep).
Paradise IS hugely catchy...in terms of pop/rock-ness it does a great job. And it's not as overblown in synth as ETIAW. The combination of these factors made Paradise a fun song on first listen which I didn't get on ETIAW. However, the chorus kind of kills the song for me.
Everything on TKOL you need to listen to a whole bunch of times to appreciate, which is a mixed blessing because then you can like it all without guilt, but in the end, it may not be as "fun" to listen to because it takes a lot more effort to get a reward.
That said, Coldplay really needs to tap into its AROBTTH and VLV veins because both of those albums balance catchiness and musical finesse perfectly - looking back, Clocks is such a catchy tune yet I don't think anyone here will say it's stupid or poppy or anything. (which people probably WERE saying back in the day)

In my few years of being a Coldplay fan, I've learned that you simply can't compare the albums to each other. They were all written in different eras and in different frames of mind with regards to the band, so I've stopped doing that a long time ago. That being said, I really do like the new single! Yeah, it's different. Do I like it more than, say, Politik? No! But do I appreciate that my favorite band is moving in a new direction (yet again) and is still surprising me with new and beautiful music? Absolutely!
I gave it an 8! :)

I can't fault the first 3 albums, then "Death" happened and something died in the music (my own personal opinion)
I didn't like ETIAW and I don't like this one either. I'm pretty gutted. But I do like the sound of some of the others they played live that have been broadcast. So too be fair there are always 1 or 2 tracks everyone dislikes/non-favourites on an album and just because they are singles does not mean they are the best tracks, everyone has their own personal favourites. So hopefully these are the 2, and there rest will be just fine - from what I've heard live.

Calm down brah. Dropping the f-bomb and using caps isn't going to change my or others' opinions. I'll still buy the album because I highly respect Coldplay and love them to death, but I still feel that this track sucks. I understand it's a concept album and that each track tells a part of a story, but Pink Floyd's "The Wall" is also a concept album, and "Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2" is considered one of the greatest rock singles of all time, and people don't need to listen to the entire album to know that. The only version of PoC we've all heard is the live version, and that almost entirely bases itself on regular instrumentals (the rest is that Chinese-esque sound). We don't know what Rihanna is doing in the song. All Chris said in the interview is that she is featured on the track, but they've "made her sound different". For all we know, she could be singing a verse with Chris in her "Russian Roulette"-style voice. LOL and paralleling Coldplay with dubstep is a completely invalid argument. Bass is the foundation for dubstep. Synthesizers aren't for Coldplay.

I'm shocked at the negative reaction, frankly. Coldplay have always changed their sound from album to album, and I find this new sound exciting. I couldn't stand the idea of them doing something that sounds like "old Coldplay" again. Because "old Coldplay" is...well, very much like OK Computer-era Radiohead. Coldplay finally sounds like a band doing their own thing, and I'm shocked more people aren't being supportive of that.

This is an absolutely ridiculous statement that I will not dignify with a response.
....CRAP!
Alright, I'll bite. The King of Limbs, like Kid A, is an album and it was meant to be listened to as such. It was never meant to be a collection of stand-alone songs. Songs like Feral and Morning Mr. Magpie work because of what they add lyrically and compositionally to the album.
Also, Give Up the Ghost is better than any song Coldplay has ever done. How's that for an obnoxiously ridicuous statement? ;)

It was a HUGE shock at first, but I've only listened to it four times, and now I rather like it :) What seemed like a one-trick song at first seems to be much, much more complex now.
Whether or not it becomes a favourite for me is far too early to say. I'd suspect not, but then I disliked Viva for months until it suddenly just 'clicked' and Violet Hill took about 30 listens of utter shock before it did the same. Since then it's been top 10 for me (unlike Viva, though I do like it).
I still am uncomfortable about the pop production of the chorus, but I'd say R42 was right - this is a 'massive' tune. It may not come into its own until it's seen live. Also, I can see a real place for this on the setlist - it's just such a contrast to anything else they have. I can already imagine this going into Viva, or Clocks, even Lost - just about anything.
So, I'll reserve judgement on the score. But for now I'm happy enough - a very brave move by the band :sunny:

We don't have anything against people liking the new song ok, what we do have a problem is when people can't take criticism on their favourite band. They label us as 'untrue' fans like you have to love all their stuff to be classed as a fan of the band it's just ridiculous and it's getting really very old. New single brings tension on the board, eh? Nevertheless, guys, let's be mature grown-ups and stop both fangirl craziness and groundless hatred.
So, I gave it a THREE. Generally, I think that this is a rather weak, repetitive song, with same recurring sound and a bit annoying lyrics. It has a bright side to it - strings are actually nice, guitar snippet is good, and I really liked the beat, I think it was an interesting move - to combine hip-hop beats with strings and piano. What disappointed me was Chris' work. His lyrics are just bad. I don't know how to justify it. Usually I listen carefully to lyrics and I like to understand what the artist want to say and relate to that. This song does not touch the strings of my heart. "She was just a girl, she expected the world oooooh ooooh" what's that about? I mean, seriously?
Really, comparing to lyrics of Coldplay's old friends Elbow, for example, it sounds childish and plain. It becomes worse when you compare this song to Coldplay's previous albums. I mean Viva (song) was rather poppy as one might say, but it had more than 5 words in it. Actually it had rather meaningful lyrics and interesting metaphors. That things we cannot find neither on ETIAW nor Paradise.
And I didn't like Chris' vocals on that. He seems to have adopted new manner of singing the last word of the sentence - very annoying.
I'm very upset. I remember giving ETIAW 7 or something, but it had an original blue-grassy riff and I thought they've done this one song as a cheesy dance-y sumer hit. But whole album this way? Are you kidding me?
If it was any other band, I'd just left the board without bothering to write something or to listen to the song. But this is Coldplay - they are very talented musicians, capable of making great music. And maybe if more of us will show dissatisfaction with the direction they're taking - I mean cheesy lyrics and poppish sound - the bigger chance there is they will do something about it.

Okay here I go.
When I first heard the song I liked the swirling begininning of it. It's like the rising action of a book plot. The violins just added to that and to me there was a sense of urgency in the song. And then the bit of dubstep walks in. At this point I seriously felt like I was in another world. Call me crazy but that's how I feel. The ooh's are very X&Y-ish and I don't mind it. The beginning of the lyrics aren't bad but further into the song I get lost in the lyrics. It doesn't focus on this girl and it goes into these weird As for the para-para, it didn't irritate me unlike some people since I sort of expected it after reading someone's comment. Overall I really like the song!

Here are my thoughts. I've been listening throughout the day, so I have listened to it a good 15 times or so. I really do love the beginning and the build-up to the verse. I don't really even mind the dubsteppy synth or the hip-hop beats. I actually like them. It's pretty cool. The sound is ethereal and immense and I really enjoy it. I just don't like Chris's lyrics. I was expecting so much more lyrically from a song that starts with "When she was a girl she expected the world but it flew away from her reach so she ran away in her sleep". To me, it seems like there's a whole lot of story that could have been explored in this song, but no, just a lot of reapeating. I'm fine with the Para para paradise to a certain amount of repeats, but this song just has it one too many times. Instrumental - 8, Lyrics and vocals - 4, so I gave it a 6 all together. I think that this song is weaker than ETIAW. I've actually come to love ETAIW. It grew on me quite a lot in the last few months. Maybe this song will grow on me. I don't know. I still have hope that Mylo Xyloto is harboring some freaking awesome tunes that we haven't heard yet. I also know that I like all the other songs I've heard so far. I'm hoping that "Up in Flames" and "Don't Let it Break Your Heart" are good. I'm going to hear them on Friday at ACL.

I love the song. I always wanted to hear a song like this. I have very intense dreams where I do things that I can not do in the physical world, such as being a good singer, building houses with my mind, doing art work with my mind, surfing for miles, and many other things. I also have bad dreams that I don't like, and I wake myself up out of them.

I gave it an 8. I thought the violin beginning was really pretty, then there's a short part between that and the lyrics which people aren't liking, but I thought it was actually really awesome the second it came on. I just started smiling once it happened. But the rest of the song, although different, sounded just like what I'd expect a Coldplay song to sound like.

I am rather indifferent to hip hop. But I hate hip hop motives in my favourite band. It's not a music, it's a cheap money making device. Since Chris married, become a millionaire and happy father his music lacks nerve and emotions. And it's just sad.

I gave it a 6/10. It's not bad by any stretch, but it does sound quite like a Timbaland-produced One Republic song.
I expected more after hearing 30 second snippet snippet.

What's more disappointing, really, is that Rihanna's going to be on another song. :(

I loved it from the first listen. It's an absolute production masterpiece. I do wish there was more elaborative lyrical content, but that's my only issue. I don't understand why anyone thinks this is "pop." It's miles from it. If anything it's an continuation of the sound they created with 'Viva.' This is a direct decendant of "Lost!" and "Yes." But it's growth. I love "classic" Coldplay as much as the rest of you, but they've been there and done that. No good band has EVER made the same album twice. Coldplay are striving to be different and go places they've never been. And they are! But clearly they haven't forgotten about who they are. This is distinctly Coldplay without actually being a carbon copy of their previous work. If you don't like "Paradise" because it just doesn't appeal to you, that's FINE. If you don't like it cause you think they're going "pop" ...well then you're just way off. Let the band evolve, please.

I gave it an 8.
Not sure which song I like more though. Charlie Brown or Paradise? Hmm they're both masterpieces.

Surely this song's just a part of the story that we'll get in full on the album? I understand what you're saying, but I really get a sense with Paradise that not only does it fit into the big picture on the album it will live as well. For me that's one of the most exciting things about it, they've just given us a taste.

I don't follow you at all here, maybe you should come back when you've given Paradise as long as you have ETiaW (or at least more than 12 or so hours) and make your call then!

I can't decide which mark I should give so I just give you my feeling about the song, for what it's worth :D
I heard the song a few times and it's different!
It's catchy, I like the intro, the end (when the guitar comes in), the chorus with the choir (it really sticks into your brain!) but something's bothering me :\ I don't know what it is, maybe the hip-hop beats

YES! You're my best friend. :D
The strings are my favorite part. Listening to this for a second time...I love the strings. I just love them. Because they WORK. Some artists don't know how to use them. I wouldn't say it's like an X & Y song, but the strings are kind of used like they were on that album. Only this time, to a greater extent.

It's true that I might like the song in the context of the album. I sure hope so, since it's a concept album! I still feel the lyrics are lacking, though. The best way I can explain it is that I was expecting something more like "Viva" lyric wise. They're intelligent and it also tells a story within the lyrics. And I did say that maybe the song would grow on me. I know I haven't had enough time to completely get used to it or soak it in yet. At the end of that trial it may become my favorite song or I may hate it. I don't know. In response to comparing ETIAW and Paradise, I feel I chose the word "weaker" poorly. What I meant to say is that in my opinion as of right now, I enjoy ETIAW more than Paradise.

A few things people should consider:
a) As I understand it the original point of this thread was that even the greatest of bands take directions which can alienate some of their fans
b) People cannot criticse Coldplay because they think that the new music is just aimed at younger people or at the pop market or whatever; this may not be Coldplay's intention at all, this may genuinely be a direction that they have always been interested in musically and wanted to try.
c) We've got to look at Paradise in context; it was chosen over Charlie Brown as the second single to challenge people's expectations- the evidence doesn't suggest that it represents a systematic new direction but rather that it was the most different song they had. Also Paradise will be between Hurts Like Heaven and Charlie Brown on the album- even if you just skip it you'll have plenty of other good music.
d) If this music is aimed at the teenage market, then I've really got to wonder about some of their older music. Listen to Yellow's lyrics- they clearly represent naive idealist teenage love. By contrast, MX so far looks complex and challenging, with constant changes in its music and ideas.

I completely agree with you :)
I read an interesting post on the lyrics somewhere. It said something like there's been a shift from songs with Chris' singing and lyrics at the centre of everything, to a more abstract, ethereal even, concept of a song. So, while the lyrics and singing have driven most of their songs in the past, this and ETiaW (which I still don't like but have grown much more tolerant of) are more like an abstract painting - the main message gets through, but in a dreamy way. A song grown from an idea, rather than a song built from a story.
I think that's what makes this song beautiful.*
The lyrical and vocal driven songs are still there (i.e. most of the rest of the tracks so far from this era - with Major Minus being a sort of midway point between the two). But they've developed this other side. And I see that as very brave myself. And the genius in it is that they've made a song that, without any lyrics that most could relate to, or any complete story, most of the public will love, and should prove to be a big hit.
* I only realised after I typed that - that, yes!! - I'd really said that this song's beautiful. It's just hit me subconsciously. Wow.

I hate when people compare Radiohead and Coldplay. They're two completely different acts with very different creative endeavors.
It's like saying: "Bjork's new album sucks ass compared to Tupac's 'Thug Life: Volume 1. SOoooooo poppy, and commercial.'"

You're right, actually you have a valid opinion. I know bass is the foundation for Dubstep, but synth and Jonny are MX's biggest contribution. Hitting out at the synth is seriously stupid when you know it's gonna be there. As for swearing so much, I was really pissed that NO ONE likes the new song. People honestly prefer ETDIAWF?! C'mon. seriously. that song was the worst coldplay song ever. *IMO*
It's fine, as long as you realize what you did wrong. As for me liking ETDIAWF, I just prefer it over "Paradise" because I love Johnny's guitar riff, the bright tone, the usage of their instruments, and Chris Martin's voice. I really wish they replaced a piano or keyboard with the "I Go To Rio" sample in the beginning though. At first I didn't enjoy the song at all, but after a few listens, I began to appreciate it. This just wasn't the case with "Paradise" though. I listened to it 10 times in a row (I tried THAT hard) and I just disliked it more and more. Hopefully the rest of MX (to me) is much better.

I gave it a 6/10. I just didn't feel like it was a band piece and those are the types of songs I like. It felt like a Timbaland-produced One Republic song like someone said above. But the album will probably rock so I'm not too worried.

The more I listen the more I like it, and I already liked it the first time I heard it. And my 7 year old just heard it and said "Oh, I like that, it's pretty. It's Coldplay isn't it?" So she likes it too on first listen.

Is not their best, and not too "coldplayesque" but i give a 9... I have listened to it enough times and it has grown on me, in fact I prefer this one than ETIAW and of course I miss the old coldplay, but I try to be optimistic and believe that just this album is going to be that "pop"... but this song is very good I think

I think the problem people are having is that they aren't remembering this is a concept album.
Theres 14! (or more!!!) songs that are telling a giant story, so it doesn't matter if each song doesn't have the worlds most thought out lyrics.
I love Paradise, and from hearing all the songs they've released/played so far, this is Coldplay's true ROCK album. It will be amazing, and it will be played A LOT on the radio, which is the best thing that could happen. More exposure = More and better songs in the future. And they deserve it too.
And for Rihanna, I think people are over-reacting. She can sing (is she perfect? no), and have you heard Princess of China yet? Even though the live recordings have suckish quality, you can still hear most of the song. Its not like she will be raping about sex. She will probably share the lyrics with Chris.
I think it will be a great song. At least Coldplay and the Oracle seem to think so. And they are the only ones I will trust.
My name is Matthew, and Ive been a fan of Coldplay since I found out that the song on the radio was called Clocks, about 9 months before Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends came out. I bought X & Y and loved it. I got Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head and loved it. I got VLV and loved it.
And most importantly, I love the songs from Mylo Xyloto. Im 18 now and a freshman in college, and I can say that I am a true Coldplay fan. Ive listened to all their albums, know many of their lyrics, and appreciate them a lot.
So I thank them and say let haters hate!

I think everyone is tired after sth about two or three weeks waiting for a great single but I think we most consider the fact that all of us have changed over past 15 years and no two remain the same, a band's music is a reflection of their affairs and concerns, for sure this chris, jonny, guy and will are not those past four guys wearing jeans and produce lovely songs with dark theme, everything around them have been changed and they've faced so many new themes and patterns and before talking foolishly and angrily about past and accusing them to be anything , just look at our past and see that are we those who used to be...?
I love Amsterdam, Gravity, Everything..., and all of those but do we think that singing 20 years of same repeating things would be great and original?
I don't think a great artist is who keeps telling same kind of things over a time and they can't just put their time and effort remembering those old college days, hanging out together and face small jobs, I think they are still catchy and powerful in music but their meanings have become more simple and including greater affairs but I, (like others) miss those Spies or even Speed of Sound days but still 7 tracks or so are remaining,,,
and about overproducing the album. yeah it doesn't sound that pure, Brian unfortunately...
we'd better see the fact that our comments really affect cause we can obviously see that good points on paradise have reduced and we are running off the way and letting the lovely band down after one single and a news of collaborating with Rihanna (cmn on chris!) , disloyal fans...
post 42!, sorry for poor English...

I think it's ok, under the synth theres a good song hiding, I'd love to here an acoustic or stripped down version. But listen to it in context listen to MX/Hurts Like Heaven, then Paradise, Charlie Brown & Us Against the World and Mylo Xyloto so far seems to be quite an album.

Theres quite a story for the album so far in Hurts like Heaven it sets up a cold world of people being torn apart and fighting back, then in paradise we encounter the girl of the piece expecting the world but facing a harsh reality, so dreming of a paradise. Then in charlie brown we have the boy of the piece escaping in a car meeting the lost boys then being smashed to smitherines in the concrete being captured but 'glowing in the dark', then in Us Against the world the boy fantasies about escaping the chaos with the girl and creating a new world. We haven't heard M.M.I.X. yet but presumably the boy escapes, and in ETIAW the boy put his music on as a way to escape reality and imagines the girl emerging to tell him it's alright and though he may get hurt he still raises the flag. Then in Major Minus we get a true idea of the enemy ever watch full and the protagonists hiding, fighting and escaping. I can't wait for the second half of the album to hear the finale. It is quite a concept it reminds me of what The Who's Lifehouse was to be till it became Who's Next.

Nothing in TKOL and (supercollider and butcher and staircase ) is comparable with the 4 songs coldplay released so far, the worst song in TKOL is better by miles than any or all combined latest coldplay songs.
I cant find a single indication of soul or heart in any of the coldplay latest songs.
I'm forcing myself to at least like the songs but no luck.

LOL... In fact Coldplay and Radiohead are my two favorite bands and if you compare for example Parachutes with The Bends you realize that they weren't so different... but now they have taken opposite paths and they don't have anything in common. Radiohead have become now so Experimental/"Extremely Alternative" and Coldplay is so Popish/Commercial, and the truth is that I don't like any of the paths they took... I would prefer that they still do what they used to do, I mean it's ok an evolution and it would be very boring if they still sound the same but at least they should have keep their style.
