Paradise is amazing
I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

I actually don't think it's that bad. It's quite decent compared to ETIAW but nowhere near as amazing as Moving to Mars.

But it will probably get old fast, like most pop songs do for me.

Some of you need to understand that sounds evolve.

Every Coldplay album is unique. If you're looking for another The Scientist or Yellow, keep on searching, because there will never be songs like those again.

That is true.

but there is a big difference between changing your sound for creative reasons, and changing your sounds to gain more record sales and appeal to a younger audience.

You're saying that Coldplay are changing their sound to gain more record sales, yes? I disagree. I can definitely see them changing to this pop sound, for creative reasons. It doesn't seem out of the question, I mean, even I, the ultimate hipster on this forum has started to take an interest in pop music :P

changing your sounds to gain more record sales and appeal to a younger audience.

This is exactly what they are doing. And as they gain more 14 year old fangirls, they loose the soul and feeling of their music.

Sure bands evolve. The way that Radiohead evolved from OK Computer to Kid A, or In Rainbows to The King Of Limbs. Arcade Fire evolved from Funeral to Neon Bible. Feist just now evolving from The Reminder to Metals.

Those are examples of good evolutions. Viva La Vida (or even any album before it) to Mylo Xyloto just isn't sounding good. It's depreciation at its best. It's like Black Holes & Revelations to The Resistance.

I really don't know how you don't think it's for record sales. This kind of song works perfect for a market for people that have similar pop tastes. I mean just look at the lyrics and the sound of the song.

Also it's the excessive use of "oooohhhhh"'s like within Viva or how they use the same syllable over and over like in Teardrop, or how they look like they're a boyband from the 90's.

They're trying so hard to be popular. It's seriously sad how low the band will go to get fans and sacrifice people that listened to them when they started. To be honest I have no intentions of buying any more albums by the band or seeing them live if this is the direction and mindset they're going to take.

Not diggin' it. Except for the verse melody, too bland. Might grow on me slightly like ETIAW did, but like ETIAW, I'll be skipping this one when it pops up on my iPod in order to dive straight into Charlie Brown.

The most disappointing thing about all of this (at least for me) is how they thought both this and ETIAW were more worthy of being album tracks than something like Moving To Mars, which showcases a heck of a lot more maturity than both of those songs combined, IMO. It's one thing wanting to have a go at cheesy pop songs (hopefully Chris got it all out of his system), but it's another thing entirely when they start to actually BELIEVE that stuff like this should displace what is simply more worthwhile music. This might be 'experimentation' for the band, but this certainly doesn't have any of the hallmarks of 'progression' or 'evolution'. Seriously, what happened to the quality control? Viva La Vida - heck even Rainy Day - are examples of pop songs done to much better effect. All Paradise showcases is a lack of inspiration and a desperate attempt to write catchy 'hooks' (like that should actually be their top priority). If they actually think this is anywhere close to being impressive in any way in comparison to their back catalogue, I'm guessing their best days are long behind them now. Every artist puts out duds, but if you can't recognise them and filter them out, that's a much bigger issue than just being capable of writing a bad tune. Even worse is the fact that Chris seems to be more confident than ever about the new music.

Basically, I'm just disappointed that their standards have slipped like this, when I KNOW they can still write good music. If this happened to be released as a b-side, I wouldn't care nearly as much. But seieng it being treated as a flagship single (alongside ETIAW) just makes me cringe. It's extremely frustrating, and I'm not looking forward to the copious amounts of airplay this will inevitably be receiving. It just kinda feels like they're selling out... I don't know. :\
