She's realy shy on stage, I mean really really shy. She spoke fast and quiet and try to concentrate only on the piano, then she started to feel confortable and finished very good. ( The House of Blues, New Orleans, October 2002)

I agree 8 grammy's good God i mean she beat out Bruce and eminem. That's the trouble with the Grammy's they have their pets! I like her cd it's really really good. But her performance live wasn't that great you know? Now coldplay's was inspirational and moving and beautiful but Norah's was ok.
My opinion for what it's worth

i really like her but i think she is over-hyped

all these awards she has received is kinda like an oscar going to some 'respected' rather than popular actor

Avril is really annoying when she goes to award shows...i mean, if you don't wanna be there, you don't have to...it pisses me off when the camera shows her and she has this angry look on her face..as if she's better than all the people that are there..

yes she is.... back to the topic, Norah is a sweet and she sings like an angel........... I didn't really like much Jazz and Blues but now with her music I've really got into and love them........... but poor she, she'll have a huge presion for her next album (in a year or 2 maybe) for the Grammy awards and stuff like that

She won 8 Grammys....deserving or a bit execessive?? :)

Well where I live she only had one single out "Don't know Why" I hope this is right, anyways I like the song. I'm a bit confused on how the grammy's figure out who to award, I mean I could not consider her best new artist when I'm not aware of all her music (or at least more than one song) when only one song has been exposed where I live

I am so curious, where did you see Dave Matthews Band with Nora Jones 4 times? I like DMB, and Norah has a wonderful voice, but I am not so sure about her folky jazz. What do you think?

Sweet One
01-04-2003, 09:13 PM
I love her "folky jazz" sound..actually, that's part of the reason why i like her..i never really listen to that type of music excessively. Her style of music is definitely a breath of fresh air to my musical tastes... I'm gonna see her in July...i'm ecstatic!!

I have her first (amaaaazing) album and wondered if the 2nd album is any good/different?!

:D

rf_ucsd
13-02-2004, 09:47 PM
I have it.

It's good but it's not as good, so it takes you a while to really warm up to it.

It's a solid effort in the same style as the first, which a little more folk/country influence (done well).

I still really recommend it, but you might be in for a slight let-down in your first listen to it.

::Hayley::
13-02-2004, 09:49 PM
aww thanks

i just thought that 'coz she has such a unique style it might be hard to change things.... so the new one might sound pretty similar.

ANyhoo, I might give it a go :D

rf_ucsd
13-02-2004, 10:01 PM
The sound is actually very similar. If you liked the first one you will like the second one ...

... I just don't think you'll like it as much as the first one. Which isn't a put-down for the second album. The first was SO good that it would be near impossible to replicate.

But because that first was so memorable, this one takes a little while to get used to.

ok, i've listened to this album for the past few days, and i think it's definitely gaining on her debut. As i said about the PP album to fifi, it's a "grower"..hahah

This album is definitely an album you listen to when you're all alone and just hanging out. It's fantastic! "Humble Me" at first was great, but now, listening to it puts me in a daze. Norah's voice is sooooo beautiful. I'm going to revive this thread AND the Norah love on this board.

How is her second album? Can you compare it to the first?

I think it depends on your taste. I like both albums as much as each other. For different reasons. Come away with me is calm and soothing. Where feels like home has more energy. But it is also more countryish {Norahs own lable for it} For me her stuff is so good there are only 2 songs spanning both albums that i dont like. Those are "Feeling the same way"which is too repetetive in the lyrics imo, and "creepin in" which has Dolly Parton in. And is probably the most countryish song you will ever hear. Other then that both albums are brilliant. Also if you get hold of the delux edition of FLH you get 3 bonus tracks. Those are "Sleepless nights" "Moon song"{Which is Norahs}and "I turned your picture to the wall" Moon song is bloody brilliant.

And also if you are ever able to get a hold of it get the "Special edition" come away with me album which you will know because it has the picture below on.

http://muzyka.onet.pl/_i/info/duze/n/norah_jones2.jpg

This special edition has "Peace" by horace Silver, Cold cold heart live, Ruler of my heart{With the dirty dozen brass band}and a Bob Dylan classic called "Ill be your baby tonight"

So all in all her debut{if you get the special edition} out weighs her second album by 2 songs. But for me her second album has more songs that i can listen to time and time again. So that basically mean they both come out about equal. Well for me anyway. It completely depends on your individual taste however

I was extremely disappointed with the second album in comparison to the first, which blew me away when I first heard it.
"Come Away With Me" is an extremely classy track.
Nothing seemed to stand out on the second album, and Norah (inevitably)seemed to be too surrounded by media hype when it came out, so I gave it a miss.............................................. .........

Back on the thread subject. Heres an interesting fact. Whilst Norahs debut did not get 8 grammys {Like the few albums in the world that have achieved this} her album is currnetly the highest selling solo album since the millenium.

I found this in a book that was published around july 2005. So its not old info either :stunned:

Why did she not deserve the grammys?

Pray tell. For her debut i dont think there was anyone more deserving of the grammys then her. At the time she was a fresh sound. Something no one else had been doing. And she revitalised the singer-songwriter side of music for women. Put some decency back into it. Destroyed the image of fit women with crap voices going round in nothing more then a thong and a very small bikini.

Extremely good point - especially the bit about the unnecessary "flesh exposure" by certain singers (male AND female)! :P
Norah's was indeed a very fresh sound when the debut album appeared.
When I first heard it (in a shop) I knew nothing about her and I bought the album purely on the strength of what I'd heard (which is how it should be).
A similar thing happened with David Gray.
I admire the way Dido dresses to, as she is extremely un-showy and usually sticks to wearing jeans/trousers and a trendy (non-revealing) top.
The likes of Norah Jones and Dido don't need to expose their flesh as the music they produce speaks for itself!! :D

23-09-2005, 01:05 PM
Nah. You can see it in her face when they gave her the first grammy that she was shocked. Her album had been working its way up the billboard chart steadily for several months. If my facts are straight she was in the top 20 when the grammys started. She would have been just as successful if she had not even been nominated. She did not expect to win the grammys. And it certianly meant that there were stressful times ahead. I remember being on the official site some 2 years ago. Probably more. There was this note on there that she had written. Explaining just how stressed out she was. At one point she even contemplated seeing a shrink. She did not expect what happened. Niether did she want it to happen either really. And she does not take easily to fame

I say this as one of her biggest fans...and someone who met her in June 2003. After a concert. I had the honor of meeting her and the rest of the band backstage. I got the impression that she was not all that used to it all. And some reporter guys managed to sneak past the security. Then they all got up and ran for the bus. With the reporter guy trying to catch them. And the funny thing is that Norah saw him first. And her words were "Shit...guys grap your stuff. The paparrazis here.

So dont hate Norah. If you want to hate anyone hate the grammy officials. For trying to ruin her carrear.

Fair enough. If we all liked the same thing the world would be bloody boring. I cant claim to know how much she is played in her home country. But i hardly hear her where im from. Lol. Mr squared never got back to me.

Heres an interesting fact on mrs Jones. Her dubut album was recorded in that music studio in the hills. 90 miles or so away from NY. Another interesting fact is that the singer "David Bowie" liked the place so much that he went and brought some land up there.

Ever since Norah Jones hit gold or platinum, more accurately, as her debut sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, everyone wants to be her, or, as in this case, take her picture, as shown here at Cannes, France, in May. (Getty Images / Pascal Le Segretain)

Looking for the next Norah Jones |It's no secret that record companies love the RIYL sticker they put on CDs. The Fray was recommended if you like Coldplay. Panic! At the Disco was recommended if you like Fall Out Boy.

Unknown bands that sound like popular bands are good for the major labels' business, and that's why the FM airwaves are such a bore. But music critics see even further into this obnoxious sameness, because for every sound-alike act that sells a million copies, there are 25 others whose careers are stillborn and left with boxes full of CDs, unfulfilled dreams and quiet MySpace pages.

One of the most fascinating unofficial competitions of the past decade has been the race to be the next Norah Jones. Ever since the songwriter hit gold - or platinum, more accurately, as her debut sold more than 20 million copies worldwide - everyone wants to be Norah.

This isn't like the rush of snarky pop-punk in the wake of blink-182 or the flush of dancey synth-pop in the Killers' aftermath. This is bigger.

"Any time anybody sells records in those numbers, people are going to want on that bandwagon," said Mark Bliesner of Band Guru Management, "and you certainly did see a number of signings, although maybe not a lot of successes, after Norah first hit."

There was Ray LaMontagne and Nellie McKay, Amos Lee and Jane Monheit (to an extent), Michael Bublé and Diana Krall. Jamie Cullum? Yep, him too.

They were all being marketed as "the next Norah Jones," sometimes because of their music style, sometimes because of their accessible jazz affiliations, sometimes because of their potential appeal to such a broad audience - that last nut being the key to Jones' success.

But none of them - not even the recently hot Bublé, who debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts two weeks ago - has come close to matching Jones' appeal.

Jones, who plays Red Rocks tonight, is one of the unlikeliest success stories in popular music's recent history. Her debut "Come Away With Me" was extremely listenable with the jazz sprigs that grew soulfully out of its pop rooting. "Don't Know Why" was an easy radio hit, a smash score for Jones and her writers, Jesse Harris and Lee Alexander.

With Jones on the piano and her Handsome Band filling out the rest, her music nailed down the sometimes-squirrelly definition of the AAA radio format, which local powerhouse KBCO helped define. It's easy on the ears and entertaining, paying homage to roots musicians of decades past while still providing modernity and a slight edge.

Jones' cool breeze of a voice reminded her fans of everyone from Katherine Whalen to Rickie Lee Jones. Amazingly, her debut went on to sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. and nearly 20 million copies worldwide.

Who wouldn't want to emulate such widespread success? And who's to say Jones hasn't opened doors for the artists who have followed in her footsteps?

"I wonder if Amy Winehouse would have gotten the marketing push she's getting, as diverse as her sound is, were it not for Norah," said bandguru.com's Bliesner, who is also a professor in the music business department at the University of Colorado at Denver. "This is still an industry based on cookie-cutter mentality, and Norah helped open up a new cookie cutter for the labels to sample."

But not even Jones could give a proper repeat performance to "Come Away With Me." Her follow-up record, "Feels Like Home," went platinum, but even with a multiplatinum DVD, "Live in New Orleans," and her new record, "Not Too Late," those three releases combined don't compare with the success of her debut.

But has Jones' noticeable sales fall-off put a damper on the mimickry? Hardly. New York mags and blogs such as Time Out and Brooklyn Vegan can't stop comparing buzzy singer-songwriter Christina Courtin to Jones. And the press materials for Amy LaVere's new record, "Anchors & Anvils," can't help but invoke Norah with the same excitement.

Not that they needed to mention her name, because the album's cover - showing LaVere in soft focus looking elegant with creamy skin, warm eyes and wavy brown hair - makes the implied comparison to Jones obvious.

Echoes of Norah

Norah Jones' music has an enviably large audience, and other jazz-informed singers are going after that mammoth slice of the mainstream. Three of them are coming to Denver this summer.

Amy LaVere: Her voice is as sweet as an angel's, and while her music blurs the curious line between progressive jazz and alt-country, it's obvious she shares some vocal stylings with Jones. June 12, Dulcinea's 100th Monkey.

Michael Bublé: He likes his music bigger than Jones' compositions - ideally in the swing and big band traditions. He's more of a Harry Connick Jr. type, but his rather recent emergence links him more closely with Jones. July 18, Wells Fargo Theatre.

Diana Krall: It's fair to say Krall would not be playing the big joints were it not for her jazz music's pop and rock edges, some of them informed by her husband and sometime songwriting partner, Elvis Costello. Aug. 27, Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
