Chris apparently wants 13 songs
The rest of the band wants 10 songs
Here's my theory though:
How do we know the other 3 songs arent the other studio songs?
I dont if that's even accurate but id rather just have brand new studio songs

ok thanks for sharing.
I really like what they did with VLV -- I'd prefer a short album and then a future E.P.

How about 13 songs on ten tracks? That's exactly what they did with VLV

I think they're just gonna have an ammount of songs that will give them the desirable length, so if they find 10 to short they'll do more, or if they'll find 13 songs to long they'll have less.

Well . . . it depends on their definition of 13 tracks; do they mean Viva era-ish, as in 10 a-sides and 3 hidden tracks, or X&Y era-ish as in 13 a-sides?
I hope they have 11 a-side tracks with 2 hidden tracks

My thoughts:
--10-11 track album with hidden tracks like VLV
--13-track album
--10-11 track album with 2-3 extra songs saved for single B-sides
--10-11 track album with 2-3 songs never heard from again
I think it really could go any way for them. Long albums can be unwieldily, but I'm sure most of us want to hear as much as we can from them at some point. I'd prefer it to be a shorter album, but with the leftover songs saved for REAL B-sides, rather than just having remixes and radio edits and live versions on the single releases.

"Hidden" tracks are just dumb. Songs like Life is for Living and Reign of Love deserved their own track. Through the magic of Audacity, my Coldplay albums do  My Viva is 13 tracks
1. Life in Technicolor
2. Cemeteries of London
3. Lost!
4. 42
5. Lovers in Japan
6. Reign of Love
7. Yes
8. Chinese Sleep Chant
9. Viva La Vida
10. Violet Hill
11. Strawberry Swing
12. Death and All His Friends
13. The Escapist
If they do the same convoluted thing with MX, i'll just rip it and remix it to how it should have ben in the first place as soon as I get it.

I kinda like the hidden track thing. They do it for a reason, because it's a single idea spanning two songs. For example, I can't picture "reign of love" meaning the same thing to me without LiJ right before it.

Not the same :phu:
With he exception of AROBTTH there has always been some sort of hidden or extra song, so it would not surprise me if they had 11 tracks and a plus somewhere in between.
. I'd prefer it to be a shorter album, but with the leftover songs saved for REAL B-sides, rather than just having remixes and radio edits and live versions on the single releases.
This! Having real B-sides would be a great way of releasing those songs that don't fit the album. It would make me really happy :P I don't know why but somewhow I don't see them releasing another EP like they did with VLV and Prospekt's March.

The current trend seems to be for a band to release an album and then six months to a year later release a "special edition" or "deluxe" version of that album with bonus tracks. I wonder if this is something that Coldplay would consider doing.
Also it should be noted that one of the 13 songs has a good chance of ending up as an itunes bonus track...

I'm not a huge fan of hidden tracks, either...I mean, with Viva it was nice because we got to hear more of their work, and the hidden tracks were usually pretty short, so the album didn't feel hugely long, but I'm not really in love with having two different songs jammed together on one track and being forced to separate them. "Reign of Love" is by far my least favorite thing on Viva, but "Lovers In Japan" is one of my favorites, so that's kind of annoying sometimes. I don't really mind one at the end, though, like "Till Kingdom Come" or "Life is For Living," even if I don't see the point in hiding them, especially when there's a huge gap of silence between the "last" track and the hidden ones.
Brent
23-08-2011, 07:28 AM
I don't know. For me, a new track isn't necessarily a new song. It's a new thought/idea being contributed to the storyline of the album. If two songs work well together in that respect I actually prefer it. Plus, it seems that Reign and CSC are more interludes than stand-alone tracks. That's why they rarely ever played them live.
I'm a big proponent of artistic purity: art being enjoyed the way the artist wanted it to be. Which is why I love listening to the album start to finish (I rarely listen to just one track on any Coldplay album). Especially something as cohesive and textured as Viva was.
Plus, I love every note played on that freaking album. So it's not annoying to me at all! But if you hate Chinese Sleep Chant or Reign I could certainly understand the frustration.
ApproximatelyInfinite
23-08-2011, 07:32 AM
I like that idea, about the paired-up hidden tracks relating to each other, but to me, at least with the Viva hidden tracks, I didn't see strong connections between the two parts of each track from my perspective. And I love CSC so much I think it deserves to be its own track :P

^CSC is awesome! One of the very few times they played it live is one of my favorite YouTube videos ever!

where the hell did chris say that he WANTS 13 SONGS ? please give me the source for that!
i remember them saying in interviews that they have FINISHED 13 songs, so that's the max, but they still had to figure out which ones will be on the lp.
Top albums of last year imo were:
Plastic Beach by Gorillaz
The Surburbs by Arcade Fire
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West
Plastic Beach is 16 tracks.
The Suburbs is also 16 tracks.
MBDTF is only 13, but does have a running time of nearly 70 minutes.
As much as I agree short albums are good, long ones can be too if they're consistent.

I think will be 10 tracks and three of them will be hidden tracks
Or will be 11 tracks, including two hidden tracks
1. Mylo Xyloto / Hurts like heaven
2. Paradise
3. Princess of China
4. Car Kids / UFO
5. Charlie Brown
6. Major Minus
7. Us against the world / under 1 roof
8. Up with the birds / tomorrow
9. Up in flames
10. Every teardrop is a waterfall
OR
1. Hurts like heaven
2. Paradise
3. Princess of China
4. Car Kids / UFO
5. Charlie Brown
6. Major Minus
7. Us against the world
8. Up with the birds / tomorrow
9. Mylo Xyloto
10. Up in flames
11. Every teardrop is a waterfall

I think the long album vs. short album debate has more to do with total running time vs. number of tracks, when it comes down to it. Albums over 45 minutes, no matter how good, just feel long to me. As long as they're still good and consistent, of course that doesn't affect how much I love them (some of my favorites are 50 minutes plus), but when you're listening to them all the way through, it's definitely more of a commitment, and can feel more like a marathon.

MX/Hurts Like Heaven?
Princess of China
Charlie Brown
Up in Flames
Major Minus/U.F.O.
Us Against the World
Paradise
Every Teardrop is a Waterfall
Great Expectations
Tomorrow/A Hopeful Transmission
This is based on it being a "love" story... and the songs that follow the "/" are either hidden or second parts, probably instrumentals). Just a guess.

Good call!!Like the layout and the possible hidden tracks.
I think the official tracklisting wont be far off this one.
The only downfall if this turns out to be the Mylo Xyloto tracklisting weve heard a good chunk of the album already!!
Iv said this before and I know it wont happen but id pre-fare if Coldplay didnt include ETIAW and Major Minus two great songs but we have them on an EP.It would of been nice to see another two new titles on the tracklisting replacing these.Maybe titles such as Luminous,CarKids,Rex or AlienRadio if any of these exist,or even if they tweaked with Major Minus to become MajorMinusMedia!!
Would you Agree!!

I don't think ETIAW should be on it, but I'm fine with MM. Not because I hate ETIAW (I don't, just not a huge fan), but I just don't think it fits in with the rest of the songs we've heard.
We'll see.

Viva la Vida had one too many secret tracks. Reign of Love was needless, in fact I've taken it out of my VLV/PM master playlist and just replaced Lovers in Japan with the Osaka Sun Remix.
13 tracks please Coldplay. Have the MX live intro has an intro track, then the rest can be 12 songs. I wouldn't mind the odd secret track, but I'm calling there should only be two of them this time around at the most.

Reign of Love was pretty good though..
If ANY song was useless on VLV, it's Chinese Sleep Chant, especially being tacked onto Yes, which is an excellent song.
I don't mind having secret tracks, as long as they aren't filler like CSC was.
