I was on billboard looking at some of the upcoming releases and I noticed that Drake will release his next album(which is highly anticipated in the hip hop community) on Oct 24th. My question is do you think Drake will be a threat to Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto being number 1 in the US? I for one dont really care for Drake and think he's one dimentional. But hes well liked among the hip hip community.I beleive Coldplay will outsell him but know he is a fomidable opponent. Some numbers based on last album sales. Coldplay sold 720,000 copies in its first week in the US and Drake's album sold 447,000 in its first week of US sales.Maybe I just answered my own question.

I think Coldplay will come out on top. Drake's fans usually just steal the music instead of buying it. Plus, Coldplay is much more established, and like the Billboard story said, most people who listen to Coldplay want to hear the whole album, not just individual songs. Drake is a radio act.

I read that same article and asked myself the same question. And just like you I answered my own question very quickly.
Another big profile release that day is Kelly Clarkson who will probably end up in 3rd position. I predict for that week:
Coldplay: 500000 copies (if Paradise becomes a big hit, my guess is 600000)
Drake: 300000 copies
Kelly: 200000 copies

Coldplay will be #1. I'm sorry, but Drake is not that great. I like a couple of his songs, but he won't be the outlasting force that Coldplay will be.

I'm not too worried. Drake isn't even one of the good hip-hop artists as far as I'm concerned. If it was, say Jay-Z or Kanye West this would be a different conversation. And I don't think they could outsell Coldplay either. This is Coldplay we're talking about people. The best band in the world. X&Y and VlVoDaAHF were the best selling albums WORLDWIDE in 2005 and 2008 and something tells me they'll repeat that success. Plus, in a sense, who cares? We all know which album will be better. Not even close.

Yeah because Drake is black and black people steal things all the time instead of buying things. Coldplay are white and white people want to buy and hear the whole thing, not just songs.

:laugh3: Haha, well it's not hip hop that I dislike, it's music with no meaning. I really dont care for much music, just Coldplay. And I know that sounds so stupid and fan boyish, but I really didnt listen to any music because I thought it was boring. Then I just listened to hip hop because that's what's considered "cool". Then I saw Lost+ on YouTube and clicked on it for Jay Z but ended up finding a love for Coldplay. So, I don't like music. I like Coldplay. That sounds insulting but it's not. So I DO love Jay-Z, for helping me find Coldplay. He also helped me discover pancakes, but that's a story for another day...

Haha wow I guess that came out wrong. What I'm saying is that many people who listen to Drake only want individual songs that they'll either get a la carte or simply enjoy it on the radio instead. like I said, Drake is a big radio act versus an album mover.

Therefore, people will be getting it for free via that medium. Coldplay has a very dedicated fan base. They're venerable, which translates to a ton of sales. And, as evidenced by this site, Coldplay fans want to purchase the music. Remember when we were all bitching about having to buy ETIAW multiple times? Not once did we mention torrents, etc. That's pretty rare these days.

Drake is a popular guy, but his music has fallen victim to the iTunes a la carte syndrome, or simply torrents and stuff. Just like many similar pop acts. Plain and simple, Coldplay just sells more albums. That's what we're talking about here, and it's not a racial issue.

Plus, my Coldplay concert buddy is black, and she's almost as big a Coldplay fan as me. All kinds of people love Coldplay!

A music chart geek myself i think Drake is still a threat in coldplays possible #1 in albums chart

Coldplay made 750++K back in 2008 with vlv and around the same amoount 745K ++ for X&Y

hopefully they can do the same amount with this 5th album for me #1 status doesnt matter in the end of the day its the sales or number of sales they make in the end:D

Coldplay are my favourite band and Drake's one of my favourite Rappers -
Oct 24th is a brillant day for me with both albums dropping!!
Drake does have a massive fan base in the US, however that
said I still think 'Mylo Xyloto' will outsell 'Take Care' no doubt!!

I for one don't care whether Coldplay reaches number 1. Coldplay's chart position has no effect on how much I enjoy the music. And most of the mainstream stuff in the charts is crap anyway in my opinion, it consists of nothing but bland hip-hop artists who make almost identical music, there's very little originality.

Haha, I also sort of twisted your comment to make it appear worse than it was intended.

To be fair though, I think that Coldplay is going to have a lot of people who just torrent or grab the singles. I don't think any big band is immune to that. I still think Coldplay will outsell Drake, but I don't think it will be because Drake will have a higher percentage of people stealing vs. buying.

Point missed.

Not really. Your point was that it was ironic that he was saying that Jay Z and Kanye wouldn't sell out Coldplay and he explained that he meant that he thought Jay Z and Kanye might not out sell Coldplay's 5th album as opposed to the fact that they out sell Viva. You missed his point, I corrected you. That's it.

Summary: He said something ironic. Then he retracted that to say something normal. Yup.

I meant that they just beat Coldplay's iTunes record  +Wacth The Thrown had more first week sales than VLV.

WTT just outsold VLV on iTunes. Not other online retailers/physical copies.

Watch the Throne: 436,000 copies
Viva la Vida: 720,000 copies (316,000 on the FIRST DAY!)

And that's just the US. People promoting WTT blew the sales out of proportion. It broke Coldplay's Viva la Vida iTunes record, but it still didn't sell as well.

Coldplay's going to blow Drake out of the water. Compare Viva (720,000) to other hip-hop acts.

Kanye West- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: 496,000 (I was one of those!)
Jay-Z- The Blueprint 3: 476,000
Drake- Thank me Later: 447,000
Lil Wayne- I am not a Human Being: 110,000

Even X&Y, which has a much weaker single than Viva, sold 737,000. Coldplay's going to sell much more, probably by about 40% or so.

He just isn't anywhere near as popular on a global scale. I don't know how it is in the US, but here I can't really say he's had any big hits, whereas Coldplay... Well, there's been at least two from each album, then you've got some that aren't on albums like LIT2 and ETIAW. Coldplay will win by a considerable amount.

The new Justice album's out the next day from Mylo Xyloto. No competition whatsoever for Coldplay to beat them as far as sales go, but in terms of reviews and acclaim (which I think is just as important in the long run), Coldplay are in trouble IMO

Well Drake is still a pretty new artist to be fair. I donna, I don't think Coldplay fans are really good people to discuss anything other music types with other than white pop rock.
