I can't see more than $40 US. If it was a corporate idea I'd say more but this is clearly from the band. Therefore anything over that might feel like robbery.
Brent
19-08-2011, 12:23 AM
I bet it's pretty damn corporate.
I think this is similar to the Radiohead Newspaper album thing they had for TKOL. I think it was $48-$53 USD. And that's as independent as you can get.
Seeing that Coldplay is on a huge label, I'd be willing to bet it can't be under $50 USD at least. More realistically $65-$70.

Limited editions of things like this usually aren't sold in stores because there aren't enough to stock so many retailers. I think it's fair to say that it'll be online only, possibly turning up in one or two nice record stores in cities like NYC and London.
My guess is around $75 USD, maybe as much as $90. New vinyl records themselves usually cost around $25-30 alone, PLUS this will have a CD and a very nice book. Pop-up things are much more delicate and hard to produce, so I think you can wager that the book alone would cost $30+ in itself if it were to be sold separately. I'm unclear as to whether the "exclusive content" mentioned will be part of the book or put into the package separately.
Previous limited-edition things like this that I've bought or considered buying from other artists (Radiohead, Julian Casablancas etc) have cost around $80, and I think this will be about the same. Just because it sounds like it comes from the band's own brain doesn't mean EMI will let them market it for whatever they want--they're going to want to make a profit off of it considering they're hurting and it's uncertain whether or not they'll have the Coldplay cash cow in the future to keep them afloat. It would be lovely if they could get a compromise price down to about $50, but I have a feeling it'll be more like $70-80.

You managed to say what I wanted to say in much less space
Radiohead is much more in control of their own pricing, and the limited editions of IR and TKOL were $50+ (I think IR was like $80, but I can't remember), so I think this is going to be a bit more pricey if EMI has anything to say about it.

I've seen other limited edition albums with a whole bunch of things added on - they easily come to $100 plus if not more - case in point - Maroon 5's last album, Lady Gaga's last album - were $130 - I'm thinking Coldplay's will be at least $100 easy if EMI is involved, and if they're comparing market forces for other bands - Coldplay is one of the biggest bands out there in the world today so expect the price to be up there accordingly esp with the cost of the pop up book being high already as a previous poster had mentioned.
Can't wait for it, though, will be ordering it as soon as possible.

19-08-2011, 04:01 AM
^Oh wow, I guess I haven't bought a limited edition box set thing in awhile. ~$130? I guess someone like Gaga could get away with that. My worry is that Coldplay can too, but I guess my thought is that the band will probably want to keep prices low and EMI will want to keep prices high, so they'll meet somewhere in the middle (meaning more than $50 but less than $100).
Because I'm a sadsack, I'll buy it no matter what. I missed out on a limited edition deluxe set like this from one of my favorite artists in the past few years, and now it's my life's mission to find one on eBay etc, so I don't want to repeat that experience :P

100 BILLION dollars.
EMI's mindset in a nutshell.
Remember, it's EMI making $$$ from the releases. Bands primarily make payday touring. It will not be cheap (aka $30 us). An LTD vinyl is $35+. Factor in the other crap and the "limited" label? Anyone thinking this'll be cheap is nuts.

In 2007, this cost $80 and Radiohead could charge whatever they wanted for it, basically. Now it's $150+ on eBay, so there are the perils of waiting for something like this if you really want it.

This one was about $90 in 2009, I think, and actually impossible to find anywhere to buy now (:bigcry:), but I saw it once for $300. The book is probably the most expensive part--other than that, it's 2 CDs, a DVD, a vinyl record, a poster, and a pin. In terms of what you get in the set, I think this seems the most comparable to what MX is going to look like--CD, record, very nice book, maybe one or two other small things.

My bad, I forgot that the Vinyl is included in the package, along with everything else. Probably 65-75 US then.
I didn't mean to sound like a simpleton saying it was from Coldplay's "brain". What I meant was that this is not your traditional bullshit bundle dropped by half of the artists today. Think U2, who throw in things simply so they can jack the price even though most of it would be worthless to anyone but their top 100 fans.
This bundle Coldplay is putting out is hardly full of trivial goodies. It's got the book, the cd, the Vinyl, and the few other things, like the notebooks and what will probably just be larger versions of whatever the album's slipout booklet pictures are.
My point was only that these things weren't just drawn up by somebody in corporate to pull in more cash.
Let's just hope everyone on this forum doesn't flip out when the price info is released, as they complain about "having to buy" everything.

Mylo Xyloto was produced by Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson with enoxification and additional composition by Brian Eno. The album will be released in digital, CD and vinyl formats. A special limited edition Pop-Up Album version will also be available, which will include a 12" x 12" hardback book containing graffiti pop-up art designed by David A. Carter, vinyl, CD and exclusive content including photographs, excerpts from the studio diary and the band's personal notebooks.
So 12" x 12"

I'm starting to debate the price now--as limited editions go, it's kind of a small one (one CD, assumedly one 12" LP, one book...and it's unclear how the exclusive content will be included). I still think the book itself will keep the price high, and the fact that there's a record included, but maybe it won't really be as high as ~$80 unless the band let EMI steamroll them. Which they might.

I bought an Oasis Box Set with the album on vinyl a booklet, Bonus CD with aditional tracks, The album on CD and a DVD and it was $99/50Pound...not including shipping
U2 have an album box set that just came out for for $655.
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B005FVA63A/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=485327511&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000001DTM&pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&pf_rd_r=1MGS1GFSERY59Q6RQP17
Anyone saying $30 that is not possible. I have a huge vinyl collection and a 2LP vinyl alone is about $30 after tax.
$100 isn't bad depending on what you get. Im going to wait till I hear more.

Yeah good point.
They could be like "So you like Paradise, well that's great because you can pre-order Mylo Xyloto now!"
So they could try to ride the wave of people who're positive towards Paradise.

It's only available via Coldplay.com, so there shouldn't be any mark-ups. It really does sound like it is actually LIMITED for once due to the later release date. It's not that bad of a deal if you figure you are getting all three formats (which come to roughly half the cost). If it is truly limited, it's a worthy investment in my eyes. I'm just using the money I didn't use for a ticket to Austin City Limits friday, so I'm all good! :)

I'm definitely going to get it, even though I'm kind of worried about this album. Because it's limited, this thing isn't going to be available for very long, so if I decide I want it next summer, I'm not going to be able to get it. I did this with another deluxe album boxset a few years ago and I'm STILL kicking myself for not getting it, because I love the album now. I also collect Coldplay physical formats, and even if it might not end up being my favorite album of theirs, the box set seems pretty awesome with all the stuff inside :P

I think this is a good sign. It probably indicates it IS truly limited as they are most likely taking pre-orders to a set number, then beginning production on them. That's at least what I'm hoping!
An additional plus is the fact I (hope I) get the MP3 version a day earlier since it isn't released in the States until October 25th...

Putting aside any fears over the quality of the album (which I don't personally hold, think the whole thing together will be awesome), does anybody else feel that the pop-up album is very expensive, even for a deluxe version? I know there's some nice things in it, but £50 feels like a bit of a rip-off for what will essentially be an artwork book and some stickers...
Just feels like a bit of a sting for fans, especially in these post-recession times?
Samuel_94

^ I am desparately going to try and get it. £50 is a lot but they rely on the fact that some fans love Coldplay so much that it is too good an opportunity to turn down. I am really intrigued to see what kinds of things are in the studio diary.

I know some fans might seem its over-priced but I dont think its over priced for whats included. When you add it all up -
Estimation...
Mylo Xyloto Cd - £8
Vinyl Edition - £17
Digital Edition - £8
Graffiti pop-up Book - £20+
If you add each of these up - £53
Also your getting Exclusive content (photos, excerpts from studio diary + bands notebooks)
Poster + stickers and stencils
For the content you get I think its a fair price for something that could become a rare limited edition - but thats just my opinion.

Exactly. It just feels like a lot because you're spending it all in one go, but if you bought the components separately (which you usually can't do because of all the exclusive stuff), you'd be paying the same amount total, or even more.

Eh, so you'll just be paying ~$20 for the fact it's limited and a collectors item then. I don't particularly need those items either, but it still seems worth it to me. You could always try to sell the bits you don't want on EBay...

Great price breakdown there :) I think it´s cheaper than other artists deluxe editions, which sometimes were double as expensive. I expected between 50-100 GBP so I was very happy to see it was 50 GBP, also considering you have to pay for shipping on top of that

Hey, check your credit or checking account you used to make the purchase. There should be a line for "Merch Direct" and a phone number. (if youre in the US use 631-891-0134).
They're awesome; you'll get a human right away, and they can find your order using your last name.
I live in Europe and the only way to contact them is via email or snail mail (it's a different website). But thanks for the hint! :nice:

So I'm glad you've ordered it again because I think it's likely that there was an error with the website and you wouldn't have received one.
I would have received two copies. They sent me a reply a couple of days ago and there were two orders for my address. I don't know why I didn't get an email for the first order

the only problem is even if you preorder it, they aren't shipping the actual pop out stuff until DECEMBER 12. So a good two month wait for it.

well i do, but, i need it to pay for a bill! i dont want it to sell out or anything before i can purchase it! actually i dont care about the bill, i could just pay it late, but to make things worse. someone in New Jersey somehow got my card number so i had to cancel my debit card. Probably. At the very least you could get ~$20 for the vinyl, maybe around $20 for the popup book. $80-$20-$20 = $40. Take out the $10 you would have paid for the CD anyways, and you paid around $30 for the diary. I don't know how far you would get selling the stencils and stickers, but it's worth a shot.

I find it hard to believe the pop-up book would go for the same price as the vinyl. It's probably the most collectible element of the whole set. If you wanted to sell it on EBay in the future, it'll probably go for more than $20. But then again, the economy sucks, so it's a gamble...

We don't know how limited it is. If it is truly limited, then yes, it will probably be worth a lot more. But if they just take as many orders as are made through october, probably won't be worth as much.

Really?
I'm planning on opening one and keeping one unopened for my collection. Either that or reselling it (I resold my In Rainbows one for like twice what I paid).
I'm a Coldplay addict. What's weird is that I'm usually pretty stingy, but there's something about Chris/Jonny/Will/Gay that makes me want to give them my money.

I know a lot of you guys who haven't been charged yet are wondering when you will be charged. I just thought I'd let you guys know that I got charged today for my pre-order. Under my order status on the Merch Direct website it says Preorder Paid. Just a heads up. Make sure you have enough cash in your account.

It's clearly a conspiracy.
But I don't care. Keep the music coming.

We don't know how limited it is. If it is truly limited, then yes, it will probably be worth a lot more. But if they just take as many orders as are made through october, probably won't be worth as much.
Good point, but I meant that I doubt there will be as many of the pop-up books as there are copies of the vinyl, hence why it should be worth more in the long run...

Mine was charged today too! Status says 'Charged Preorder'. It has begun!
By the way, would a mod mind merging this with the 'Mylo Xyloto Limited Edition Release Date 12/11/11!' thread? Just easier to keep track of one!

Yeah, I ordered one on the 12th.
I ordered another one today and haven't been charged yet. And I paid the same way both times. Interesting.

Is there a chance that there will still be copies when it is released or will they all be sold through pre-orders? This may seem like a silly question, i'm not sure how limited they are

Thanks for your replies. I decided to order it...hopefully the diary will be worth it because I'll probably not bother with ebay...

Yeah, I think they're all preorders, MAYBE with a small number of leftovers sold on their online store for a short period of time until they're sold. Limited edition these days often means "pre-order, we'll manufacture that amount and ship them to you, and then we'll never make them again."

Yeah, if you don't, you might be kicking yourself forever and scrounging eBay etc for people selling theirs for the rest of your life, like I do for another deluxe edition boxset from another favorite artist :bigcry: :P

Julian Casablancas, Phrazes For The Young. When the album first came out, I was actually fairly disappointed, or at least put-off by the weirdness of it. Then my mom slapped sense into me and six months later I was crying over how good it was...after all the beautiful deluxe editions sold out.

Oh god that must have been awful! I can't bare to think how disappointed i would be if I went to order the pop-up version and it said 'sold out'. Its making me sick just thinking about it!!!!!

This is what you could have had, according to Wikipedia:
A deluxe box set including b-sides and home recordings was made available after the album's release. It comes with a vinyl recording of the album and is housed within an antique style box.
I might have to check his music out!

Try The Strokes (his band) first before you go into his solo stuff. It's more comprehensive that way, and you'll appreciate it more.
Personally, I like him with The Strokes a lot better than by himself.

^ thanks for the advice. I will do that, I was just on youtube looking for JC's solo stuff but wasn't having much success. What has been going on here. I've been trying to get on here for a while but it says its moving to a new server. What difference will it make if it is on a different server? That sounds like an arrogant question but on this topic I am just innocently ignorant.

OK I know this is totally offtopic, but I can't resist making small comments:
Yes, If you don't know The Strokes' stuff, OMG TRY IT OUT. I won't start to ramble about why they are the best band of the last ten years and how they enabled most other influential bands that are around today to make music, but...yes.
Julian's solo stuff is very avant-garde, it's like...baroque/classical music played on electric guitars and synths and stuff, mixed with pop. The Strokes are much more...accessible. Albert Hammond Jr (guitarist's) solo stuff is also very accessible, and heartbreakingly wonderful.
But I know...I actually have all but one of the home recording videos on my computer, but what I really, REALLY want is this beautiful leather-bound book of art, photos and lyrics that only comes in the set. I've looked at my friend's, but I just need to own it for myself :P
OK, shutting up now :lipsrsealed2:

I am posting this here as well. As mp3 download we are getting a quite crappy 160 kbps , which is even less than standard iTunes audio format. If we want a better quality download, let´s all write and let them know! After all we have to wait until December for the CD version: we need something worth listening to in terms of quality!
Samuel_94
29-09-2011, 09:39 PM
Yeah it would be worth it if they they took notice but the fact that they are offering 160 shows they dont give a shit! Plus if it is that bad we could always get a better quality one off a torrent or something, just to tied us over.

Hey there! :D, I'm going to order the MX Pop-Up edition tomorrow (this is the first time I order something) and it costs £39.99 ($53) according to this page (https://shop.emimusic.com/coldplay/coldplay/coldplay/Mylo-Xyloto-Limited-Pop-Up-Album-Edition/10O6J0000000;jsessionid=31E7ACE860F8BE0B5E6E320CCE 0DC6E3):
but I searched on Google and it costs $79.99 here (http://www.merchdirect.com/Coldplay/CDs/LimitedEditionPopUpAlbumVersion/?productid=14698)!. I'm really confused, can you help me? has anyone bought this edition?
Thank you!! and sorry for my english :) have a great week :D
I ordered it via the second website, that was the only place where you could pre-order it at the time. But since it's cheaper on the first website I would go for that option.
