I've heard a bunch of people say that they don't like Eno and that they miss the old Coldply. Personally, I think Eno has greatly improved Coldplay. I prefer VIVA and MX(so far) over 'chutes, AROBTTH, and X&Y

What do you guys think?

IMO, as far as entire album ratings

VLV > AROBTTH > X&Y > Parachutes

I think VLV was a really good album as far as listening to from start to finish.

As far as the music by itself goes

AROBTTH > Parachutes > VLV > X&Y

I can't judge MX until I've heard more

Viva = AROBTTH > X&Y > Parachutes

From what I've heard of MX, it's 3rd on my list (Better than X&Y and Parachutes). But it can increase (or decrease) in my rankings once the album releases.

As for Eno, I think he succeeded in taking Coldplay into a new direction, which I think was what the band needed.

It's all about opinion. I think Fix You is one of the worst (read: least good) songs of X&Y and of Coldplay.

My opinion:

Rush > Viva ~ Chutes > X&Y

Chutes and Viva just can't be compared, but I think both aren't as good as Rush and they are better than X&Y (which is still a great and enjoyable album. Once it gets past Speed Of Sound, it's a masterpiece).

From what I heard I'm guessing MX will be just above X&Y or maybe even below.

3 albums vs. 2 albums. I think I'll go with 3 albums. :|

But real talk; Brian Eno didn't do anything bad to the band, he only changed their sound a little bit. Would I prefer the band to try a different producer next time around, maybe Markus Dravs alone? Sure. Would I be against Eno continuing to work with the band? Not at all. In all seriousness, I would pick pre-Viva albums because I like AROBTTH, Parachutes, and X&Y collectively more than VLV and MX material. I think that they should try new things, experiment... if they just made these five albums over and over again, I wouldn't listen to Coldplay as much anymore if at all. :)

Not sure if someones answered your question yet.

The first 3 albums i can connect to on an emotional level, with the lyrics and how the albums tie in with events that have happened in my life whilst i've been listening to them.

Viva La Vida for me is just musical perfection, i absolutely adore its overall "sound" and the "experimental nature" of that album.

Hope that went some way to answering your question.

Good look with your presentation

I realize most of these broad discussions turn into a discussion of why eno sucks or x&y sucked, but this has been decidedly more civil.

Personally, I think x&y is the worst album. I would explain it like this. Most people have had a stale potatoe chip or flat soda. That's what x&y was for me - stale. It still was coldplay, just more boring.

Eno injected life and passion into their music for me. For a while it was equal, but now album favorite is vlv with arobtth a close number 2. Parachutes a solid 3 and way far away x&y.

And understand I'm speaking to them as albums. X&y has plenty of great songs. I just consider it a grueling listen

You are asking me who is my favorite child.
They are all different, unique and special in their own way. Sometimes, I feel like listening to LP1, sometimes to LP4. When I have a heartbreak LP3 is my best remedy and all the lyrics speak to me. I absolutely love LP4 and it always gives me a lot of energy and I usually play it in the background when I'm working on my computer.
However, I can say what are my top 5 favorite songs:
1- Clocks
2- Everything's not lost (live2003)
3- Warning Sign
4- Prospekt's March
5- The rest
6- the 3% that I don't like

Now about LP5, it's too early to say but ETIAW is my workout song right now and I can't wait to hear Paradise in 3 weeks.

I think I will always prefer Parachutes and AROBTTH over everything else. X&Y is supposed to be part of the pre-Eno trilogy, but mentally, I have a hard time considering it that way and clump it more with VLV and I guess the upcoming MX as well (which most certainly seems like it's going to be more in the vein of VLV than anything else, I think we can agree). I'm not sure if I'm the only one who does that.

That said, some of my favorite Coldplay songs are off of VLV and one or two off X&Y, so I'm mostly speaking in terms of whole albums and eras.

The first three will be the best, until they release something similar in fashion. Viva was an amazing album because it was so cohesive and it's hard to imagine it with even one song different.
