It could have been any title and people would still love it or hate it. That's just the way it goes if you can realise it. I give it an 8 out of 10 purely because it relates to grafitti.

Derpy much? Hmmm. I thought the connection lay in the term xylography (wood art) which has inspured many forms of grafitti. It may be pulling at strings but it's still better than VLVODAAHF.

well now on the matter i'm meh about the title, thought i tend to judge the albums for their music not the title or the cover, so we'll see, it just remind me of the weirdness title of The Police album: Zenyatta Mondatta, as kinda random as this one, yet is one pretty good albums from them.

stop blaming people for not liking the title, ffs... i think the title is horrible, weeping for originality but it is rather lame. and also, the artwork is nothing special, worst cover of theirs IMO. it is really not inspiring, it's just ... meh. could have been done by anyone.
BUT
we should not be that bothered, cuz the music is not seen or read, it's just a picture and a name. it's the music that counts.

I don't see anyone lacking of respect to be honest, we're just expressing opinions, and if someone thinks it sucks doesn't mean s/he is lacking of respect towards the band's work, chosing a title cannot even be referred to as a work, their music is, and once again no one is judging their music so far.

I voted 9 for the title, because:
1. The title obviously stands for something. It has a real meaning, mirrored in the album. Maybe we can't see it now, but I'm positive that is the case. Just because the boys would never put something that uncommon on the cover without having something to ground it. That's all.
2. Maybe the title is not the most brilliant one, but it sounds OK. Really, it is not unpleasant for ear, it has certain kind of rhyme with those mailo-zailo thing, which makes it easier to pronounce.
3. I trust them. I see them going on with some theme on this album, and very soon we''ll know what it's all about.
So, from billions of other words in the world, that could possibly make it to the title, I think it's the decent ones, and maybe the best. So it's 9.

MYLO XYLOTO is absolutely brilliant and will get the word out even more - What do I mean by that? Well someone alluded earlier in this thread if it is a reference to the artist Mylo in London that Coldplay may have happened upon in their walkabout in the city.
Absolutely - it's a homage and a great way for people to hear about this artist, specifically bc he/she has some great messages that people need to hear or see e.g. (the increasingly police - like state we live in (look I like security and agree with better intelligence in fighting terrorism/fanaticism but in this day and age - surveillance has gone up tremendously and we sometimes don't even know about - ergo, The newspaper scandal in the UK, FBI in the US, etc.)
second, another diagram shows an hourglass inside a circle representing the time that is running out on our natural world, and that we can't continue to ignore the mass extinction event that is occurring with so many species on our planet, as well as the obvious climate change that is making this world more uninhabitable for a majority of the people on this planet. We need to wake up folks - we can't live in isolation, the environment affects everyone no matter how much money you may have. If there is no water to drink, it doesn't matter if you're the Queen of England, you will suffer.
This album title will catapult this artist to the fore like nothing before, and xyloto is origin/precursor to modern day graffiti (and hence the alternative media - hence Major Minus Media - perhaps the protaganist's underground network or form of communication to others trying to wake up and fight against the groupthink or the propaganda in a totalitiarian, oppressive world.
Again, what a great title. I can't wait to hear from the artist Mylo and if he/she has ever met the band. Mylo really inspired them, and I think this may be one of the best albums to come out in a while, in terms of concept and them. Especially in this day and age.
Bravo Coldplay - you make living that much better, and keep hope in the music world. Keep rocking on, and here's to Paradise - can't wait to hear it. Again, the title is absolutely genius in getting us to learn about the messages that are in the public that we need to take notice of.

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch.
I just saw the thread on the Coldplay forum, there are some interesting and quite entertaining theories on there, but I'm afraid that I'm not working for Coldplay and have never had any contact with them, so I don't have any info about their new album. I just make street protest art about things that happen to concern me, such as civil liberties and environmental issues such as extinction.
I use 'Xylo' as my street name because the first ever posters I was putting up in the streets were woodcut prints, the technical term for which is xylography. I also do woodcarving, so it seemed like an appropriate name.
Anyway, I hope you find the answer to the mystery. All the best. :)

Well Mylo absolutely inspired them - it all makes sense - Chris and the gang must have been walking around london, and saw this art and the messages that Mylo was trying to convey to the public in whatever way he/she could.
Seeing that and probably reading up about the history of street art/graffiti/etc. they were inspired to write an album with a concept of a man trying to fight against an oppressive system, falling in love, and having hope in a desperate and increasingly hopeless world. (Chris mentions The Road by Cormac McCarthy - which is a post apocalyptic story of a father and son still trying to be the good guys in a world turned to cannabilism and outright terror. It's a beautifully tragic movie, and perhaps a future we all want to avoid given the climate change that is occuring and the ever dwindling resources that are overpopulated world will be fighting over.
Thank you Mylo and thank you Coldplay - can't wait for this album - i want to get every song that fits in with the theme. this may be their ok computer in terms of coming to grips with our changing world - be it societally (UK riots, flash mobs, wars, terrorism) and environmentally (climate change, earthquakes, nuclear disasters, tsunamis, flooding).
This is going to be an amazing album.

Boring? Of all the words in the English vocabulary you could've chosen, you chose.... "boring". Hmmm, what's more quirky/exciting than "MYLO XYLOTO".... what about "Parachutes" wooooo so exciting.... how about "X&Y" oh God, had I been a fan back in that era, I'm sure I would've been bursting with excitment at the sound of .... "X&Y" and AROBTTH and VLVODAAHF are simply too long and monotonous to pronounce they can't possibly be exciting, so what the hell are you talking about? "MYLO XYLOTO" is obviously the least boring title... and the rhyming in it contributes to it's appeal, it doesn't remove from it, since it allows it to simply flow off the tongue. Personally, I think you should stop knocking it, when you don't even know what it means or how it ties in with the album itself. This thread in a sense is pointless. We shouldn't be judging it, or at least so critically when we don't, for lack of a better phrase 'have the full story' behind the title.

Mylo - UK street artist with art that wants people to wake up to the ever increasing destruction of the natural world, increasing surveillance on our lives (via internet, tv, etc.) and filtering of the truth through traditional media.
Xyloto - xylo being a group of street artists per google search. Could be also from the root word xylo meaning wood and perhaps the precursor to modern street art, graffiti, posters, etc. Xylo is also a word that the artist Mylo uses to describe cameras and perhaps surveillance.
Can't wait to hear what they say about the inspiration and meaning behind the title, but I'm pretty sure this is close to it.
People are buzzing already about it, and it's only going to grow in curiosity for the rest of the public, and Mylo's work is about to blow up, and his messages wll be seen by even a greater audience. Thank you Coldplay.

We shouldn't be judging it, or at least so critically when we don't, for lack of a better phrase 'have the full story'.

I was commenting on how I don't like the cover art and the title is stupid. But of course clearly Coldplay can't do anything wrong so no need for further discussion...

I don't think Coldplay were inspired by Mylo the street artist at all. He's not famous in the slightest, I don't know one person who has heard of him. Also, his website isn't something you'd stumble across by accident, you'd have to search for Mylo to even have a chance of finding it and let's be honest here, 'Mylo' isn't a commonly used word at all. Then there's the fact that Mylo himself doesn't know anything about this and Coldplay would have to ask permission to use his name in album title.
This whole thing looks like a coincidence to me.

EVERYONE STOP AND CALL THE POLICE, I SAID SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT COLDPLAY
boring?
if this is boring what about Parachutes :uhoh:
I dont like it,but it does not sound boring at ALL
i think it's boring because it doesn't open up any possibilities about the sound of the album. For example, the name "Parachutes" makes me think of falling, then being saved. This could be metaphorical for falling down into depression, then having someone catching them and picking them up. It also makes me think of a slower, gentle descent, almost like the wind is cradling them. And then, what do you know, a lot of the music was almost very "cradling" and comforting.
Mylo Xyloto makes me think of aliens. Big whoop. :|
I find the poll results thus far rather interesting
Agreed.

Hmmm, what's more quirky/exciting than "MYLO XYLOTO".... what about "Parachutes" wooooo so exciting.... how about "X&Y" oh God, had I been a fan back in that era, I'm sure I would've been bursting with excitment at the sound of .... I already explained why I like Parachutes.
A Rush of Blood to the Head was interesting because what is rushing to my head? Embarrassment? Shyness? Anger? Fear? Or am I simply running, away from a problem or away from trouble, and the exertion is making blood rush to my head? Is someone holding me upside down over something? An endless pit, of despair maybe? I could go on but I don't see me getting anywhere with you.
And you're right, we shouldn't be having ANY negative thoughts in the Coldplay section, what an atrocity!

Mylo is a uk street artist that probably inspired them to look at the history of the street art from xyloto (wood art, the origin or precursor) to current forms of alternative media (blogs, youtube, graffiti, posters, etc.). Xyloto could also refer to cameras - a term made up by Mylo. or Xylo is a compilation of street art. it's about getting out the real messages of what's going on in our world that we don't get from the powers that be - be it our leaders, traditional media, etc.

You're probably right. VLV kinda shows us the direction of the album. Mylo Xyloto is basically telling me that this album's gonna be all over the place and ridiculous and won't make any sense. Not that I know what kind of music will be in it. But that's the general idea I'm getting.

Yep, we should definitely call it MX. Unless we find out that Mylo Xyloto actually means something really cool. Probably not though. Don't really like the name though.

Given some of the lyrics of MTM (which, in spite of them, I love) and ETIAW (which I don't love), I could totally buy that. I'll stop there, though, before I get into a musical discussion in a thread solely about the title.

I voted 4, because I think it could have been worse, but at the same time...REALLY, guys? Something that we can't pronounce easily, is hard to spell, and at present doesn't seem to mean anything? I mean, I think it must mean SOMETHING, but perhaps only to molecular biologists or something.
I actually disliked "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" more than I dislike "Mylo Xyloto" on first announcements, but it's like they intentionally made this one obnoxious or something. Plus, the abbreviation is "MX," which is so similar to "X&Y." I mean, "XY" is right smack in the middle of the album cover! I feel like (many) fans, critics, and the band alike have made it clear that's not their favorite album, so it's interesting that it's kind of coming back in weird-twin form, title-wise.
I kind of wish the title was just "MX" and that it stood as Roman numerals for a thousand and ten. What would that mean, I have no idea, but I find that cooler and more elegant, somehow.

"Moving To Mars" is actually my least favorite of all the new tracks, I think :P
I think if they just called the album "MX," the whole world would be clamoring for an explanation of what it stood for, moreso than we are now for a meaning of the weird words. Somehow, abbreviations with no explanations are more infuriating to me, which is why I kind of liked the Roman numeral explanation :P

I think the same. If you are a real fan, you support everything that they do and you love it from the deep of your heart. You appreciate everything, it doesn't matter if you like it more or less and maybe we can think that it could have been better, but what's better? Are just their decisions. And after all, it's so wonderful the way that they create expectation and the way that we talk about and probably we still talk about this in a few months, even years. By the moment, we can still wondering what the fuck means "Mylo Xyloto". And that's why I love the title.

Erm. . . If you're a fangirl/boy you do that. A real fan will recognize that a band has their ups and downs in terms of quality and that nobody's perfect.
And if this sparks an argument whatever, but I feel that it's important to recognize that no, Coldplay are not gods, and they make mistakes when writing songs so you have to be able to critique their music and be open minded. I'm not saying that you have to hate them, but you should recognize that some songs are better than others, some albums are bad, sometimes the singer is out of their range/out of tune, etc. And what really bothers me is when people say things like this, "oh you're not a real fan if you don't worship everything they do", when the people that do actually do that are the ones that are unaccepting of other opinions. That's really why arguments happen over Coldplay in the Coldplay section- not because people are "hating" but because they express a different, sometimes not complimentary opinion, and the "real fans" just cannot accept that.

Honestly that is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Definitely something a fanboy/girl would say.
Honestly... if Coldplay was to release an album of random noises or farting or burping would you honestly as you point "support everything they do and you love it from the deep of your heart"?
Just because someone doesn't like a certain era of music doesn't mean they aren't a fan. I consider myself a fan of the band even though I really don't like their last few albums or the direction they've gone in.

I just don't see why certain people in general feel you have to love everything an artist does, and clearly many people have taken huge offense to what other members of this forum have said about the direction of the band.
I know that this is a generalization but I'm sure a lot of people really love the direction of the band and songs like Teardrop because they are more familiar with the more mainstream pop direction of the bands last few efforts and probably got into the band within the last few years. I'm sure that I as well as a lot of other members have been listening to the band a lot longer than others (not saying that that makes me or anyone else more of a fan though).

The last time I checked, being a fan doesn't require having fixed and blind opinions like those that you find in a cult.
Yeah, I went there. That's how I feel about it. Some people on this forum just amaze me with their unwillingness to say/accept anything critical about the band, as if it was a sin to make such comments. It's not.

It's insulting, though, to have someone tell you that you're something you're really not, especially after saying something that's not meant to be insulting in any way and has NOTHING to do with the members of the band or the members of CPing in question, which happens ALL THE TIME. Just today, it's started all over again. Mike got labeled as a Coldplay hater by some n00b just for making a comment about how he hated where Coldplay was going, without even taking into consideration what else he's said about them here. It's stupid, and it's sickening. There's a difference between being a fan and just being an obnoxious snob about it.

I dnt know, its always gonna end in debate when people have opposing opinions :\ its hard to remember that at the end of the day, your opinion should be the one that matters most to you. I admit that sometimes it can be tough, sometime's people's opinions can be very annoying, like when they choose to not even hear why you have your opinion. Its an issue that the whole world has to deal with everyday :P
Well I've been a long time fan, so far I've loved what they have done so far. I find more positive things than negatives. But im still a little nervous when it comes to hearing new albums. Im afraid I wont like it, but they haven't let me down so far. Evnthough I really miss their old stuff sometimes. I find it interesting how the fanbase is so divided on the new material though, I wonder about the reaction from mylo xyloto who will end up being happier? The fans from oldschool coldplay, or the fans of the new  im in the middle so I have good chances of liking it :)

I'm sorry if my words have been misinterpreted, probably it has been my fault and I explained myself a little bad.
I'm with you too, because it's evident that I like some things more than others, but it's just I feel a special love with Coldplay, I just don't know why. The first time I heard them was with Yellow when it was released. I remember that I was watching the TV in the dinner room while my mother was talking with the mobile phone, and then I felt goosebumps with that song and I didn't want to hear my mother, so I jumped of the sofa and then ran to the other room, where it was another TV so that way I could listen to the song in a better way.
I can understand your opinions, but I don't like criticism. Well I like it if it's good criticism, but not bad criticism. I liked their first songs better, but sometimes you just don't get what you want, so I adapt to times. I like the evolution. With the title "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends" I just thought: Viva La Vida? I think that the second one goes better with them. But then I got used to it.
BUT HEY, MAYBE ALL WE ARE RIGHT. WE ALL CAN BE GOOD FANS TOGETHER.

I guess my whole point is that I feel some people think they have to force themselves to like everything by a band to be considered a true fan which is BS. Or basically that people mindlessly love everything that a band releases without properly listening. For example... when Radiohead's album TKOL came out I was massively disappointed by it. But even though I'm a huge fan I didn't give the album or songs a like 10/10 rating just because they're one of my favorite bands.

The fact is that I voted that title with a rating of 7, because I like it but just for the fact that I want to know what does it mean, and if it really has a story behind. But if I'm honest, I would have prefered other title too. I think that "Great Expectations" could have fit well.

I think people have to accept that you're not going to force a change of attitude to those so called blinded fans. I mean how many times has the Coldplay section been dogged by this same argument, particularly since all this LP5 malarky started back in June. Like a stuck record.
Some fans are very passionate about their attachment to Coldplay. With that love of Coldplay comes a great deal of sensitivity in some cases. But those people should try and find it in themselves to manoeuvre some criticism of the band. It'd probably make you appreciate the really quality stuff from future and past releases even more but it will also make Coldplay seem more normal, like all of us, in that nothing is perfect. You'd be doing a great job for yourself in being totally honest with yourself. Voting 10/10 for everything they do doesn't make sense. Probably stems from a combination of a desire to see Coldplay publicly praised to the highest and a counter on those who will inevitably come on and say 'this is shit'. It's more used in defence than honesty, if you get what I mean. Doubtless there will be those who genuinely feel that something they do is perfect and not feel pressurised into giving it perfect scores and reviews. That said I admire their passion. They clearly care a lot about Coldplay, something many people on here sneer at with their "wit".
As for the critics (the genuine ones and not those who criticise for the sake of criticising) all they want is the version of Coldplay which they feel is the best.
It's like any football team you support. No supporter commits themselves to go as far as saying "well every player is just fantastic". The great ones will be held in high regard with the football fan, the shit one's won't be and will be screamed at to get off the field because all the football fan wants is the best for his or her team. And that's what those critics of Coldplay want. Just the best for Coldplay. Only difference is that football is a results business and you can see who's shit and who's not, whereas music is subjective.

If it was Great Expectations it would have been better but not by much, I HATED that book. :P
Really? Well I almost read it, because I was on a course and the english teacher wanted the students to read that book, but I finally didn't because I left that course. So don't you recommend it to me at all? Well, there's the movie featured by Chris wife, it's just boring too? :D
In any case, I think that just the name sounds very well, like a kind of hope. Maybe "A Hopeful Transmission" would have been as good.

I don't care about being a "real fan", I just want to enjoy their music :)

That's very well said.

Honestly, if this surprises you after "viva la vida or death and all his friends", I think you have bigger problems. Last title was awful, this is about as funny/awful.

Ahh Spieler puts it in perspective, yes that was an equally horrible album title.

It's hard to say so far! To me, the music is much more important than the title, and plus, we'll all get used to the title after awhile. We'll be used to hearing it, we won't even notice how weird it is, and it'll probably fit the music well.

yes the music is more important
no we have not heard the album yet
technically, anyone who mentions the music is off-topic
