The boys are getting old now, and Chris has made comments on the longevity of bands and how at 30 things change.

What do you guys think?

Honestly, no, I think they've got a couple more in them.

Chris seems like one of those guys that couldn't stop if he tried. What else would he do?

Stv

I thought that a while ago Chris stated that he does not think "bands should keep going past the age of 33", but later rephrased this to say that what he meant was that they must proceed "as if it's our last, because that's the only way to proceed".

So, it's not their last. Kinda very obvious. Anyway, at last a new topic / not repeated thread.

If Radiohead stops, Coldplay will do the same, and I would suicide 2 times.

Hopefully this will never happen :P

It would be interesting to know what their contractual obligation to EMI is. They may very well have to produce an album six or seven to fufill it. Not that you want a band that you love only making music because they are legally obligated to...

Anyone with some knoledge on the music industry know how this works? If a band signs with a label for say, six albums, do they have to produce six albums or does the label just have the rights to six albums IF they are produced?

I LOVE Coldplay!!! They have been my favorite band since I was, like, seven... which was about ten years ago. I think they'll release a couple more albums! But after that I'm hoping another band/artist will come in and take their place!

I think Arcade Fire is the next runner up once Coldplay leaves :) But we still got a loooonngg time! All sorts of things happen within a period for 7-10 years.

Its hard for me to believe that they will find new motivation after this 3 year process of recording a new album in which they put everything. I really look forward because it will be a masterpiece, so its hard to make a new album afterwards...

5 albums with EMI.
In 2010 they signed a contract with Universal Publishing, a huge contract http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/bizarre/3100567/Coldplay-sign-huge-deal-with-Univeral-Music-Publishing.html

I'd love to see loads more, but honestly it's impossible to tell how long they'll last. I think they'll keep doing new things until they get to the stage that they jus can't be bothered (or when the public can't be bothered).

I still feel most bands shouldn't continue forever. Usually as bands get older their material is not as good when they first start.

I saw by accident this morning an interview from 2010, in Boombox, where they said that they were writing a lot of songs for the future, like squirrels who gather a lot of nuts for the winter. and then they made fun of the interviewer who didn't really know what a squirrel was

So, that kinda answers your question.

ColdplayingfromKansas
10-08-2011, 02:18 PM
 Well I should HOPE NOT!

I could see the guys making 10 albums, honestly, and maybe even more since, as someone else pointed out above me, they aren't making music for money but because it's just something they love to do! It's their passion, and I don't think they should stop just because they reach a certain age :)

They can continue making music as long as they are able, or want to.

Jack Bauer
10-08-2011, 02:23 PM
I don't get when people ask this. When Chris makes those "old" comments he's almost always joking. A creative mind has to create and as long as all four of them are alive and well they'll go on as long as U2 have.

foxeh
10-08-2011, 02:45 PM
Even if they stop, Chris will write a lot more songs for other Artists.

2GreenEyes
10-08-2011, 02:52 PM
Well I think they always keep writing to try to improve, they always say they want to try to make the best music possible and they don't feel they've done that yet so that keeps them going. And they'll never feel like they've done that, so I think they'll keep going as long as they feel they can get better.
But seriously I haven't seen any sign whatsoever that they're getting tired of it or want to quit anytime soon, they're working so incredibly hard and haven't even taken the time to think about when this should ever end, I think they just love what they do and there is nothing in their near future to make them stop. So we shouldn't worry about it.

10-08-2011, 02:57 PM

Lets compare Coldplay with similar but older bands;

Coldplay (1996) - 5 albums
U2 (1976) - 12 albums
R.E.M. (1980) - 15 albums
Radiohead (1985) - 8 albums
Travis (1990) - 6 albums
Oasis (1991) - 7 albums

Clearly the others are ahead, and most may release a couple more albums in the future I'd say. The thing is with Coldplay is that they tend to take a while between albums. So lets compare the bands together when they were a similar age. Chris Martin is now 34, so this is how many albums each band had released once their lead singer turned 34;

Coldplay - 5
U2 - 8
R.E.M. - 9
Radiohead - 5
Travis - 5
Oasis - 4

So Coldplay have been slower off the mark than U2 and R.E.M, but about the same as Radiohead, Travis and Oasis. One thing I would say is that Coldplay albums tend not just to be the albums, but they tend to be like eras, with quite a few b-sides. They have also released a number of EPs, especially like Prospekts March, which added to the VLV b-sides could have made a second album.

Obviously I hope they go on forever. I think as always, there was an element of joking around when Chris said that they wouldn't continue beyond 33. Hopefully they'll bring out many more albums and will cement themselves as one of the greatest bands ever. In my honest opinion I'd say that somewhere around 9 albums would be a best guess. I also wonder when they'll bring out a greatest hits album? (if they do). R.E.M. and U2 have had a few, even Radiohead have had one. I don't like artists releasing too many greatest hits albums, but I'd like to see Coldplay release one near the end of their career perhaps.

Cleggy
10-08-2011, 05:22 PM
I don't think Coldplay will ever release a greatest hits album, they've said before that they don't like the idea of making fans pay for material that they already own.

And the Radiohead greatest hits album should be ignored. The band have condemned it and encouraged their fans not to buy it. It was released by their record company without their permission as a cheap way of making money. It doesn't contain any tracks from In Rainbows because that was released independently so the record company doesn't have access to the tracks.

Anyway, I think Coldplay will keep going until they are about 50 and then call it quits. But don't expect anything better than what they've already done after they turn 40. Typically the quality of a band's material decreases once they get old. And it takes Coldplay quite a long time to make each album.

Yes it reminds me of Extras too! I still think they will probably release one, but as I say, once they get towards the end of their careers. It might be released by EMI, that's true.

I don't think it will be a bad idea to release one. It really would increase the chances of there being a Coldplay CD in every house in the world! After all, how many people do you know who have Queen's Greatest Hits, or the U2 ones. Loads of people. I could see CP's GH selling like that!

As for making fans pay more than once for music; how many times are we going to end up paying for ETIAW? Probably three times for me, taking into account that it was basically free when buying the ETIAW EP on iTunes.

I doubt Coldplay will split up after LP5. I believe LP6 will come out relatively soon after LP5 compared with the gaps between LP's 2,3 and 4. Between any other future releases they could go their separate ways and do some of their own work but I think they'll always remain a unit prepared to go into the studio and continue making albums. They're a band who should not be worried by growing old. A lot of their listeners are "mature" should I say and they appeal right across the board. U2 and particularly R.E.M. have aged well and both are still releasing some really good stuff and stillvery popular after 30 years. I see no reason why they cannot make a lot more and continue for another 2 decades.

Absolutely not. As long as Chris and co. can write songs that they deem meaningful they will continue. Coldplay does everything with a purpose, they won't continue on and wear out their welcome (ie. Rolling Stones, Oasis, The Cure, etc.). They'll go out on top, but that'll only be when they absolutely feel that they are no longer relevant.

Yeah, I'd hate to see a bad Coldplay if in any reality it happens after 5 more albums. I can only see Coldplays quality decline slowly after Lp10 or 11, although they've probably written enough songs for the future that by now they're set for another 6 or 7 albums

Honestly, where is this even coming from?

Do the band seem like they're on their way out? If anything it's like they're finally getting UP THERE - in their minds (mine as well but if I said that a bunch of you would say how VLV and all the new LP5 stuff suck or something).

They wouldn't leave now. They've got AT LEAST two more albums in them after LP5 and I honestly believe they'll push them out faster now. I think we all expected a quicker turn around for LP5, but the fact is you're right about their age. I think they'll push two more albums out there quick and then after that who knows.

I really don't want them to become like U2 - hanging on for no apparent reason other than they can come up with somewhat good crap in their sleep. I want them to continue to push forward for as long as they can. It'll be a sad day when they say goodbye, but I'm glad I'm 21 as they're about to release their new album.

I think we can expect 10 more years of them and by that time I'll be 31 and I think I'll need them a little less.

Out of most bands out there today, Coldplay seem to have the tightest-knit group, or one of the tightest-knit groups. Who knows what happens behind the scenes, but their relationship has always seemed shockingly democratic and healthy from what we're able to see if you ask me, so I don't think personal issues with each other would suddenly crop up to the point of breaking unless someone made a major lifestyle change or something to that extent. And as someone said before, they're all so dedicated and so passionate, I feel like they're in this for the long haul. I don't think any of them would do retirement well, and they seem to have the view that they're stronger (musically) together than they would be apart at this stage in the game, and I don't think any of them seem to want to give up music to fish or knit for the rest of their lives yet, but that's just my opinion.

Completely agreed

In my mind, Coldplay are one of the least-likely groups to break up in the near future--they still seem to be enjoying themselves immensely.

LP2 will always be their masterpiece if you ask me. I don't see them surpass that level.

Anyway, I'm sure they will make more. Maybe they'll leave EMI and do it on their own, who knows. The band members get along very well and they love making music more than anything. Chris is a waterfall of songs and tunes (ranging from bad to fantastic ;)), especially obvious when you see how many ideas they had to scrap for LP5 (I'll continue calling it like that, I'm too much used to it :p).

Even if they want to stop, they will hardly be able to. When Chris said "Working on an album as if it's our last" it means that's the way to make it as good as possible.

Never mind, I see ApproximatelyInfinite already penned down my exact thoughts.

The boys are getting old now, and Chris has made comments on the longevity of bands and how at 30 things change.

What do you guys think?
probably it'll be true but i'm getting tired of the same old story with each album release, although to me their initial thing is vanishing slowly... .

Chris seems like one of those guys that couldn't stop if he tried. What else would he do?
he seems, but if it were true he'd join other projects and would be releasing double albums/books/paintings or one each year, as other artist have done causing them to break their contract and run their own company, which is not the case.

I do think there will be an end to Coldplay, but definitely not yet. They will split up at some point but there is no point in them doing it yet. Chris said he can't imagine them continuing but I think its because it is the end of the creation process and the start of Mylo Xyloto tour. People would think they can't hack it anymore and were just giving up or something. I'm talking bollocks aren't I???

Don't answer that!!!!!!!!!!

to have a break after all their work and achievements? to start other artist projects? to spend some proper time with their families?

I still don't think they will stop yet. Maybe in a few years after the new tour, they will take a long break.

They signed a deal with Universal so they'll definitely release some more music in some form. But judging from the interviews they'll really struggle to start LP6 so I think it will be a long wait before LP6 is released, possibly even 5 years or so after MX.

I think they say that every time, but to be honest it is their life's work, that is what they were born to do. I was reading an interview of Brandon Flowers when the killers decided to take a longer break after touring/recording for better part of 6 yrs straight.

The Killers couldn't stay home or just chill out, and do other things. All 4 band members were already coming up with ideas, producing other people's albums, releasing solo albums - it's just in their nature.

Plus Coldplay is lucky, they have great chemistry for a band, and they just work well together. That's so hard to find when u start a band.
I mean chris' love for jonny is that he realizes how lucky he was to have roomed close by Jonny when they were in college (he overheard jonny playing guitar in his room with the door closed supposedly bc jonny is so shy about it (and you can totally tell that from concerts where Chris has to prod him to go into the crowd, though he is becoming better at coming out of his shell). Plus the fact jonny was such a talented guitarist to boot. They work well together (almost like a Richards/Jagger, or Lennon/McCartney duo in a way). Then Will becoming the drummer even though he had no experience at it, that's amazing. I mean he was a multi-instrumentalist prior so he naturally had the raw musical talent to pick it up and excel. I mean this is destiny, and Chris' knows it, and he acknowledges it every concert by thanking fans for giving them the best job in the world. They don't take it lightly.

Could you imagine if Will's friend actually showed up for the audition, would there be a Coldplay as we know it? I mean all of these 4 guys are so talented and work so well together. I don't think they would give it up to spend more time with family, they already do i'm sure - I mean they take 3 yrs in btwn albums, granted they are touring a good part. But as long as their is the creative spark and messages to be conveyed - they can't help it.

But again, i can't imagine how much pressure they have to endure to produce both a quality and unique album - think about it, here's your assignment, i want you to produce an album of quality songs with unique ideas, quality lyrics, and on top of that write hit music to it, and also have a concept behind it. That's a tall order, and that's why they get paid the beau coup bucks.

So, whatever they have left, I hope it's for at least another decade, i mean U2 is still producing quality music after 30yrs in the biz, i don't see why they can't do the same.

^ Agreed

You know . . . I've always wondered what Coldplay would be like to this day if Will's friend had shown up for the audition :P of it they hadn't showed Guy that lyric snippet that convinced him to join the band. Coldplay does seem to be destined to be together.

I don't know, they'll probably make a couple of albums more. But I think it will be a long time before we listen to LP6. Probably they'll be on hiatus 2 or 3 years after Mylo Xyloto tour (it's hard not to call it LP5 :P) and then they'll start recording LP6 which I think it's going to be very different from what they are doing now, hopefully doing a AROBTTH album style. But I think they'll stop at LP7 or LP8, although I would love them to make music forever! :)

ColdplayingfromKansas

^ Agreed. I could definitely see them taking a hiatus for a couple of years before working on a new album--although I can't imagine Chris settling down for any period of time :P

I could see them releasing 10 LPs before calling it quits--especially since they just signed a 'huge' contract with Universal Music (although I wish they could just go on forever).

they can say they're going to quit as much as they want, but they all seem to love what they do too much to do that. i think they're in it for the haul.

^ If there is ever a Coldplay: Greatest Hits album the guys won't be behind it--it'll probably be released by EMI like what they did with the Radiohead Greatest Hits thing.

Plus, if they ever released one it would have so many songs on it . . .
