Coldplay Launching Samsung AT&T Summer Krush Concert Series

Coldplay will perform in Los Angeles later this summer to help launch the fourth annual Samsung AT&T Summer Krush, a free concert series designed to showcase the capabilities of the newly released Samsung Infuse 4G, available exclusively through AT&T.

The British rock act will launch the nine-city series with a concert on Aug. 3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA. Select songs from Coldplay's performance will air that same evening on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

Beginning next week, a limited number of free tickets to the Coldplay show will be available through registration at www.samsungsummerkrush2011.com, a Summer Krush spokesperson tells www.Billboard.biz. Tickets will also be available to purchase, priced from $45 to $150, on July 15 through ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster outlets. Net proceeds from the Los Angeles concert will benefit the Grammy Foundation's Grammy in the Schools music education program (grammyintheschools.com).

Coldplay is expected to release its fifth studio album this fall. The new set's lead single "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" has so far peaked at No. 14 on the Hot 100 and at No. 5 on Rock Songs. The band's last release, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" (2008), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 2.8 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The group is currently slated to play numerous global music festivals between July and October, which include London's iTunes Festival (July 22), Chicago's Lollapalooza (Aug. 5) and the recently announced iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas (Sept. 23).

Through mid-September, Summer Krush will visit mostly 2,500-capacity venues in Dallas, Nashville, New York, Seattle, Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago and Orlando. The artists for those markets will be announced in the coming weeks, a spokesperson says.

Along with hour-long live music performances, each event will feature interactive activities and the chance to win prizes, including the Samsung Infuse 4G and a Summer Krush-branded guitar. A limited number of free tickets for the concerts will be available through radio promotions and online registration at samsungsummerkrush2011.com.

Since Launching in 2007, Summer Krush has featured performances in select U.S. cities from such artists as Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, Good Charlotte, Gavin Rossdale, Nas, Ludacris, Big & Rich, the All-American Rejects, Ne-Yo, Jimmy Eat World and Paramore.

Samsung regional marketing manager Stacey Portnoy recently told Billboard that Summer Krush has helped boost phone sales in markets that the series visits.

"From a sales perspective, we can track by city," she said, declining to reveal the cost of producing Summer Krush. "We have a strict [return on investment] process that we have to go through to get this program approved every year. So we do have to provide some sort of quantitative data."

Coldplay head to LA for Grammy Foundation benefit
12 July 2011 3:03 pm
Segments from the August 3 show to air on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

http://coldplay.com/images/news_line.png

Good afternoon. We're pleased to report that Coldplay are playing a special one-off show at LA's UCLA Tennis Center venue on Wednesday, August 3. The net proceeds from the show, which is part of the Samsung AT&T Summer Krush concert series, will benefit the GRAMMY Foundation's GRAMMY in the Schools (http://www.grammyintheschools.com/) music education initiative for high school students. Selected highlights from the concert will then air at midnight that night on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! show.

Tickets for the fundraiser are priced from $45 to $150. We have a special presale for Coldplay fans, via ticketmaster.com (http://www.ticketmaster.com/), which begins at 10am PST tomorrow (Wed July 13th) - using the password TEARDROP. The general sale then begins at 10am PST on Friday, July 15th, again from ticketmaster.com (http://www.ticketmaster.com/).

Yeah, I think they might be taking on too much...especially when they're trying to finish the album too! Then they'll have all the crap that comes with releasing it to contend with as well.

There might be a pause between the album release and the following (proper) tour. I just hope they'll head to Europe just as much as they did last time in 2008.

I dunno...seems to make sense to add another US show close to Lolla, as long as they're in the US, they might as well... They may be able to get in some promo interviews in the US during that time, too. And then they're "off" from shows most of August and September. .

Well for now they're off...:P

But I saw a VERY tired, drawn and subdued band in France, maybe I'm underestimating them and that was a one off, but I've never seen them like that before.

Is good news for LA peeps either way :)

But concert reports since France have been awesome, so it sounds like they're over whatever it was. I'm very excited :) Playing on a tennis court means a small crowd, too.

Because, like I said, I'll be seeing Muse on a different stage at the same time.
If it was virtually any other band (1 or 2 exceptions), mind you, I'd take Coldplay in a heartbeat.

I've been doing some research. It looks like they will have a GA Pit at this venue!!

That makes going very enticing. However, it also looks (according to Krush Concert Series website) that the concerts in the "series" will only last 1 hour. I would have thought that Coldplay would play their regular "festival" set, but I don't know now.

I wonder if it would be worth it if I would still get to see the show in ATL in Sept?

Yes it is going to be a challenge with so little tix on sale, like I0wxo2 said, good luck everyone! :) I just saw that the there will be a GA pit at the concert....it's very tempting to buy some tix for GA. :) And like someone said already above...it did say the concert will only be 1hr. I hope it turns out to be the 1hr30min that they have been playing. :)

"The main grandstand surrounds three courts, and has a capacity of 5,800 spectators. There are eight lighted, hard-surface courts at the center, which can hold 10,000 spectators."

So it's a bit larger than just 2500

That's a link to an air shot of the venue for anyone interested. :)

Funny, a friend just sent me an e-mail about this with a different pre-sale code for pre-sales starting Thursday...

So the official Coldplay site:

Begins at 10am PST tomorrow (Wed July 13th) - using the password TEARDROP

Goldenvoice e-mail:

PRESALE THURSDAY 7/14 10AM - 10PM - PASSWORD: "FOUNDATIONS"

Since pre-sales only release a set amount of seats, this gives you an additional chance prior to the public sale of the tix on Friday.

The main site for the concert series says this:

Beginning next week, a limited number of free tickets to the Coldplay show will be available through registration at www.samsungsummerkrush2011.com, a Summer Krush spokesperson tells www.Billboard.biz. Tickets will also be available to purchase, priced from $45 to $150, on July 15 through ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster outlets. Net proceeds from the Los Angeles concert will benefit the Grammy Foundation's Grammy in the Schools music education program (grammyintheschools.com).

So who knows how many tickets will actually be released for sale. Ack, I'm nervous! I really want the GA pit tix!

Given the size of the venue, it looks like every ticket should provide a good seat/spot. If you miss out on the public sales, you can always try StubHub as a back-up. I would hope if you are right on the site when it goes live, you should be good at getting some kind of ticket (maybe not your first choice but something). Since this was only announced today and on sale in the morning, I don't think a lot of people are aware of it, so that is in our favor.

Much thanks for the additional pre-sale code. :)

hey guys, I wish everyone good luck! I am pretty sure having more people lowers your chance of getting tickets, since they have to all be in the same row. I am going alone, and when i registered a few seconds after 10 am, i got the corner seat of row 1 section 201. there are only 13 seat in each row, so i think i was lucky this time that I got the 13th seat. I am still looking for a general admission pit ticket if anyone wants to trade! going to try again tomorrow!

What a fecking nightmare that was...there was no mention ahead of time about those $389 VIP tickets in Sec. 201-204 :( I had two computers going, refresh, enter the damn security codes, over and over, and nothing for 30 minutes. Kept trying, and finally I took the first tix that came up. I needed 3, so we are in Sec. 2, Row 15, for $150 each. Not exactly what I was hoping for :( But at least we're going...I may still try tomorrow and see if anything better comes up.

So back on page 4 someone posted a look at the tennis courts but I can't tell what section is what, cause if it's the section level "not blue chairs" the rows are less than 15, so are they counting the blue seats then continue on up?

Tracey, just go to the ticketmaster.com site, search Coldplay and it should come up. Or try this link. http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0B0046E6C32E6316?majorcatid=10001&artistid=806431&minorcatid=60&tm_link=tm_notix_Change_Search_Request Then you can see the seating chart. While I likely would have paid whatever price I needed to had I actually been home in LA this day, $160 for seats that aren't even the best in the house is an outright scam. I tried for fun just now and pulled up Section 201 Row 4, so singles are definitely easiest to pull up. Each presale code probably gives access to a different lot of tickets. I pull up a different seat each time with TEARDROP, but MAJORMINUS returns zero results whatsoever.

The ticket prices are high and I agree with you on that. However, it is a benefit event for the Grammy's (or NARAS) more than a Coldplay concert. Coldplay probably had no input on prices and left to the NARAS organization to determine prices.
The money from tickets is going to NARAS, which does some excellent work on supporting musicians, producers and engineers. Also, making it easier for people to enter college and get degrees. Without that kind of support it would be harder for music to be made.

It's also to promote the new Samsung AT&T 4G phone and they will be GIVING AWAY tickets next week...so it's not just a benefit. My kid's school has been a Grammy Foundation school so I support what they do.

Well, that didn't go very smoothly...

I had two PCs on two networks and got on both right at 10am (kept hitting F5). Tried to get two tix with each of the two promo codes. Nothing. All I could find was the periodic single ticket.

Then I tried the VIP Experience... what the heck is the VIP Experience?

Anyway, I figured if I'm going to go, and maybe there is a chance at a meet and greet or something... well, I bit the bullet.

I am in Section 204, Row 1. I don't even know who I'm taking with me yet. :laugh3:

I called Ticketmaster and asked what the story is with the "VIP Experience". I finally got in touch with someone with some details. He read off a list of things - VIP parking, early access, a special lounge, a "pre-show", no host bar, special souvenirs... still not real clear on this though. He did give me an e-mail address for more info, so I just sent off an e-mail and will let you know if I find anything else out.

Ticketmaster does have a three day return policy on this event, so if you buy tickets today and maybe find better tickets tomorrow or Friday, you can get a full refund. I had bought one single ticket (and not a very good seat) before buying the VIP set, and they gave me a refund without any problem.

But Samsung AT&T are essentially dropping a huge chunk of cash to sponsor the event, which benefits the Grammy Foundation. Like you said, it is a great program. I know a few people who wouldn't have taken degrees in music production and engineering without the Grammy Foundation. Sound Engineers are the unsung heroes of the music industry.

It is pretty small, but I would take a box seat in the middle over a floor seat in the back. Everyone on the floor will be standing, and I think you'd have a better view from a box. Front of the floor is a different story, though :)

"The LATC features eight lighted, hard-surface courts, a 5,800-permanent seat grandstand around the three main courts and a two-level clubhouse. At full capacity, the LATC can accommodate 10,000 spectators."

10,000 is a lot. but it looks so small...

10,000 is total capacity, I think, when they set up bleachers and seating for all 8 courts. I think 5800 is what this stadium actually holds in permanent seating. But they are setting up seating on the courts, so that increases the total seats available, too.

Here is a campus map of UCLA. You can see the actual layout of the tennis center near the track stadium. This might help give a visualization what it looks like, too. http://maps.ucla.edu/campus/

Still, much smaller than Wembley ;)

Ok, so just to let you all know...I got lucky today, but I'm going to try for better tickets tomorrow. If that happens, I will sell the 3 I got today. I'll put them out to coldplayers here first, so keep checking here to see if I got better tickets. The tickets are Sec. 2, Row 15, Seats 7-9, $164 (face plus fees). So just keep that in mind, because I'd like to see us all be able to go. :)

I may be interested! Let's see what I get after the general sale.

I want to go to all the CA shows :) It was 3 years ago tomorrow that the Viva la Viva tour officially started. At The Forum in Inglewood. I was there. Was anyone else? The first show was supposed to be July 15, and I was so sad because that was the day we were flying to Hawaii for our family vacation. I was so happy when it sold out and they added the show on July 14. Hard to believe it's been 3 years!

gotcheese2768

actually if i recall those weren't suppose to be the real first shows. they had to cancel a lot of other ones before then due to production issues or something like that.

i was at the july 15th show. and damn 3 yrs really? i feel like just yesterday i was buying my tickets

Just got some tickets from the grammy foundation link... these sales have been the biggest bs ever on the part of ticketmaster, they're really swindling us as Coldplay fans this time around. They started late yesterday and opened the page this morning way before 10am! Why can't they just keep their word on the timing of these things?

I tried again for 3 and nothing came up. So I'm keeping the ones I got yesterday. I did try single tickets, just to see what came up and saw one in Sec 201, row 10! But I really want to sit with my husband and Tracey, so I'm good with what we have. Yes, this has been a total scam and I can't believe how many pit tix are on stubhub already...$239-299. Today there are only 8 pit tix available, yesterday there were a lot more.

I tried registering at the Samsung AT&T link, but only saw a place to log in, no where to register for the free tix they are giving away next week. And since KROQ is promoting it too, I'm sure they will have tickets to give away. That's how I got my tix for the meet and greet in 2009 in Irvine.

We should start a list of who is going...it would be fun to try to meet up!

Looking at stubhub just now, there are tix available in Sec 2, Row 22, so we are not the last row! Woo hoo... LOL At least we are close to the stage and should have a good view. I'm not going to try to bring my Nikon dslr, but I can use a Panasonic Lumix which takes great pics.

I'm scared to bring my dslr to concerts these days. More and more venues are not allowing cameras they consider "professional" ie, those with detachable lenses, in. And mine is just an old Nikon D-40. FAR from being professional. LOL I was turned away at Mumford and Sons after they searched my bag and I had to go all the way back to the car to put my camera away! It was awful...what was worse, is my husband went in first and he had my phone so I couldn't even tell him that I wasn't allowed in.

Regarding the camera discussion, I've found it to be challenging to plan for what to bring to concerts, and it has less to do with what is printed on the tickets and more to do with the security for the event.

I think it is more difficult to bring any sort of camera into venues that regularly hold concerts and the like, and it can be a little more lax at venues such as this that are 1) one off shows and 2) aren't actual arenas and the like.

When I went to the hidden gig shows in England, I brought my Canon 5D MKII both times and openly took photos and no one cared. The only interference I saw from security was to talk to a guy who actually brought a tripod and videocamera and set it out in front of him to videotape the entire show (!!!).

On the other hand, I've gone to concerts at small wineries and been yelled at for taking a few photos with my phone...

The funny thing is, the better and more portable and capable technology gets, it seems like we take 10 steps backwards in some cases, like the talk last month about the iPhone possibly being disabled at concerts in the future (see Daily Mail story (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2004233/Apple-files-patent-block-iPhone-users-filming-live-events-smartphone.html)).

I saw Mumford and Sons twice - once at the Palladium, where they wouldn't let me in with my camera and again at the Railroad Revival Tour in a parking lot in San Pedro. Didn't have the nikon at that show but security wouldn't let people with dslr's in :(. A lot of venues will specify no prof cameras and now I'm not willing to take the chance :(. But the Panasonic Lumix takes really good pics and is high enough resolution that I can crop and zoom if I need to when I edit. Hopefully this venue is small enough to get great pics :). Now I feel very fortunate to have gotten the tickets that I did!

Good luck Kelly! And VIP tix are the seated tickets behind the pit. Theoretically, the tickets themselves are available to anyone, but they're not releasing all those seats to the public. the VIP Experience is a whole package that just includes good seats.

I think they are worried about it NOT selling or something and over advertising the presales? Hubby said he finally heard them talk about it on KROQ, but there its been about the Incubis concert. Maybe they want everyone and their mother to know, as the ticket price is a litte more than the average concert? I dunno.. Looks sold out at the moment, at least. I tried 2 tickets and single tickets (and VIP) just to see if anything was available and all returned nothing.

I wonder if most were sold through in the pre-sales?

I'm convinced that there were never any $45 tickets available.

it feels like that. but then again i only ever got like 100 tickets once and the rest 155.

maybe those were secretly the pit tickets???

i'm thinking maybe that sliver of lodge seats in the back are the $45 ones? there was probably a small amount so they got snatched up real quick. oh well. i give up.

Looks like we all keep getting that single seat on the side of the stage. LOL Oh well...I'm fine with the Sec 2 tix I got. And I feel lucky that I even GOT 3 tickets! What a scam, though...Not happy with how this was run. Presale seems like a joke anyway...

In my past ticket buying experiences, the cheapest seats are the ones with very limited views, usually behind the stage...So based on the seating chart and the $100 ticket that comes up in Sec 1, I think the cheap $45 tickets are the ones in Sec. 18. Anywhere there is a full view in a small venue such as this, is going to be full price.

I got 3 tickets together the first day of the presale on Wed, using the teardrop password. It took trying for 30 minutes to even get anything to show up. At first, I was annoyed that these were the best I could get, now I feel like I hit the lottery! We are Sec 2, Row 15, close to the stage, and it says full view, so I'm good :)
