View Full Version : The new VIVA LA VIDA

Coldplero

After watching many of the new Coldplay performances these summer festival, I was wondering if "Charlie Brown" (PKA Cartoon Hearts) is the new Viva La Vida, emotionally speaking...
It has moments when you must clap insaly and moments when you must jump and singalong.
Which song do you think it's the new Viva La Vida in the LP5 era?
Salutes

I guess Charlie Brown is most the 'Violet Hill moment' of the album
Not sure, need to listen to the album first

Viva was so successful because it had an original sound coupled with a radio-friendly structure and good lyrics easy to sing along to.

That being said, while CB is a great song and certainly a fan-favorite, I really don't think it's that radio friendly, which is what made Viva what it has become. CB's structure is weird for a pop song and takes too many risks. Viva was successful because it was very straightforward.

I mean, if you mean what will be the biggest song from the new album, I think Charlie Brown just might.

I do think it's in need of a name change though. To reference such a culturally popular American character in your song title, just doesn't seem to be very Coldplay. I certainly understand the reference, because the song seems to be about Chris Martin being the type of kid who keeps running up to kick the football even though he always has it pulled away.

I actually love that reference, but I would have preferred it lyrically and not in the title.

That aside, I think CB may just be the big single on the album and if that's the case that'd be great. But who wouldn't love an even better song.

^Or exactly twice? :p

footyfan, I agree about the name; Cartoon Heart would be a little more Coldplay-esque. But I think now that I know the song and its lyrics, it makes a lot of sense to have the name it does. Besides, VLVoDAAHF is a pretty cheesy title. :p

The new Viva la Vida? Probably ETIAW, POC, or something we haven't seen yet. CB is more of a Violet Hill or something.

Hahaha....so true! :laugh3:

For me, I hope on the new record won't be a Viva la Vida in terms of structure. So I don't think we can say that CB will be another Viva because like other ones here said, its to difficult for a radio friendly song and actually it reminds me more of songs like Violett Hill then Viva.

Viva is a great radio song but I hope that the new Coldplay album won't have such radio friendly songs.

Btw, ETIAW seems to be the new Viva for me, althought the structure is also too complicated for a comparism with Viva la Vida...

To me:

Charlie Brown - reminds me of Yellow

Hurts Like Heaven - Life In Technicolor II

UAtW - Trouble

ETiaW - A cross between Lost! and Lovers In Japan

For me, the structure of Yellow and CB are to different from each other to say that they are similar in a way and HLH has a strong Arcade Fire influence which I can't see in Life in Technicolor.

Major Minus reminds me not in any way of Violett Hill. :P Really. But its hard to find any Coldplay song which goes the same direction...

PoC is a song which I didn't hear until now, so, hard to say something about it, actually its a mix between Violett Hill, Lost and Viva for me.

Here's something to think about. I'm going out on a limb here but I think the new Viva La Vida will also be the album title and it will precede Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall on the album. If you think about it, on both VLV and X&Y, the pre-album single has come after the title song.

How so? The time signatures of CB and Yellow are certainly different, but as far as the structure goes, they are pretty similar. Guitar riff -> vocals -> guitar riff -> vocals-> guitar riff to end the song.

Really? HLH doesn't sound anything like Arcade Fire to me, but to each their own :nice: But in terms of the upbeat tempo and overall feel of the song I think they are comparable.

And I think VH and Major Minus are similar because they are both really dark, gritty songs with not a lot of fluff.

PoC reminds me of Viva because they both have that synth-y keyboard sound providing the backbone of the song ;)

Funeral is my favorite album of the 2000's. Radiohead's In Rainbows comes close, but not quite.

Actually though, Hurts Like Heaven doesn't much sound like anything on Funeral. On AF's next two albums they started sounding more blatantly like Bruce Springsteen, and HLH sounds more like that.

I hope it will be good but I'm afraid if this album will be about their personal lives... Because the tittle "Charlie Brown" remind me the cartoon of snoopy and maybe Chris or Guy will sayfor promo on tv "This song is for my kids yes " :\
I don't like when artists talk about their personal lives, especially the singers because the lyrics significance are very important in songs :bulb: , I love when the songs are wrote for fans. How about the songs not being "the new" anything? Maybe we should just see the new ones as something completely different and not to compare them with previous efforts, after all isn't that what Coldplay want to do? Move on from previous styles and feels of songs?
Maybe it's just me but I don't like thinking of the newer songs as "the new" anything, be it Viva La Vida, The Scientist or No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground for all I know. Just saying...

Plus, Princess of China does sound somewhat similar to Viva in terms of the synth beat and structure . . .

I'm thinking if they really have a "best song" for the new album, they probably haven't played it yet. I mean, do you remember for the last album? They didn't talk about Viva la Vida at all. Except when we got that track by track synopsis from the one magazine in late March 08 (I believe). And then they told us when they announced the tracklist in mid April. But they never mentioned it before then. Prospekt didn't. The songs they were considering had Lost! and Violet Hill from the beginning but not VlV. They even told one of the magazines in January 08 that the big songs on the album were going to be Famous Old Painters, Glass of Water, and Cemeteries of London. I remember like it was yesterday. :) They're such secret keepers. But yeah. They always kept it out of the spotlight until it came down to actually revealing the tracklist. I don't believe for a second any of the live songs we've heard is the one they like the most from the new sessions.

Maybe it just so happens that it was Viva La Vida which was missed out? It could have been Lost! or Glass Of Water for all we know. And to the idea they were saving it for later, I remember reading that it has been through several incarnations before they settled on the final result, and during the time Prospekt was posting to the website, it was way more than a year before the release so there's lots of room for change.
We could have been listening to the future "hit" of the album from their Glastonbury or Rock Im Park set, it could be Princess of China, Hurts Like Heaven or Charlie Brown, but I doubt it was Us Against The World...I'm not really feeling it with that one :L

All these slow and emotional Coldplay songs of the last two albums like Reign of Love, Now my feet won't touch the ground, Prospekts March/Poppyfields, Til Kingdom Come... aren't really big, yes, thats true, but none of them are released as a single which is important to grow to a big hit.
