I really like that there isn't always the same stupid boring building of the song with verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus.

I don't mind that none of the songs have choruses, it makes them more interesting to me. It would pretty annoying if all of the songs on LP5 lacked choruses but it appears that won't be the case. Hurts Like Heaven for example sort of has a chorus.

"Amsterdam" is their best song and has no chorus. It's not really a problem.
Besides, the best chorus in the world couldn't save ETIAW.

i would have figured the chorus for Amsterdam would be the "time is on your side" bit. :P

I guess you have a point with that, I was more or less referring how it built up to something way bigger.
Prospekt.

It's disconcerting sometimes, but I think I have to disagree with you on the basis that most of the new songs DO have choruses except for ETIAW, and even with ETIAW, I think it's very easy to jam/dance/sing along to its last minute.
Major Minus - oooh oooh, one eye on the road on on you part.
Charlie Brown - Light a fire...
Hurts Like Heaven - You use your heart as a weapon...
Us Against the World - Slow-ow-ow-ow....
Princess of China - to be determined :p
Moving to Mars - they're moving us apart.....
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the definition of a chorus can be pretty subjective; one of the simple definitions for example is something that gets repeated throughout the song - that rules out Charlie Brown, but that means MM, HLH, UATW, and MTM do have choruses.
In the end you kind of need to look past the structural oddities of the new songs and enjoy them for what they are. I know Charlie Brown kind of irritates me because I actually really really like its "chorus" and wish it had more of that and less of its guitar solos repeated, but it's still such a beautiful song.

Are you trying to say those who are expecting a chorus have erectile dysfunction? :p

That's what I mean. They sorta have a chorus that's amazing but never repeat it.

Yeah, but then that doesn't give you the right to dislike ALL the songs. :p

Are you having issues with erectile dysfunctions? Well there's a Coldplay song for that. There's a Coldplay song for just...everything.

I wish they'd play it a bit straighter these days (more normal-structure songs), much as I love IUAtW, HLH and CB.

I like the Coldplaysongs with more piano parts, and I would like to hear more of those like Christmas Lights and Wedding Bells. I can't get those because I get my music from CD in a music store.

I also find it very cool how none of the songs really have choruses for the most part. I think it counters the idea some people have suggested (if I'm not mistaken) that because of ETIAW they're supposedly going in a more pop/commercial bs direction. All a lot of music popular these days seems to be built around a heavy chorus that is repetitive and contains the song's title. Coldplay haven't done that on these new songs and I think that's awesome. [: Originality my friends (if I may call you that :) ). A hard quality to find these days. But they've still got it!

OF COURSE THEY HAVE, BUT SOME OF THEM HAVE MUSICAL CHOURS
CHARLIE BROWN: RIFFT WITH "GLOWING IN THE DARK"
MAJOR MINUS: OHH OHHH OHHH GOT ONE EYE ON THE ROAD AND ONE ON YOU (PRETTY OBIOUS)
HURTS LIKE HEAVEN : "USE YOUR HEART AS A WEAPON AND IT HURTS LIKE HEAVEN"
PRINCESS OF CHINA:" i'LL BE YOUR KING... YOU COULD WERE A RING" BIT (PRETTY OBIOUS)
ETIAW: GUITAR RIFFT IS ACTUALLY THE CHORUS AT MY POINT OF VIEW AND THE WAWAW PART
MOVING TO MARS: "MAYBE MOVING US TO MARS"
US AGAINST THE WORLD: "IF WE COULD ... AWAY, FLY UP TO THE SURFACE AND JUST..."

it's far more complicated to make a song with no chorus, and make it work. which is the case here. and btw amsterdam does have a chorus.

Annnnyway, I find it interesting you see it that way, because Coldplay were trying to deviate from the standard song structure of 'verse chorus verse' etc during the VLV era ('tis said in interviews). They've certainly seemed more effective at it with the new songs than the old ones, which I liek.

Yes, there ARE chorus in the new songs, but they are so boring that they don't look like choruses at all.

I think you guys are focusing too much on a formula and in details on how a song is made. As long as you like it that's all that matters.

The biggest problem.. no, the biggest concern I have about new songs is Chris voice. Dunno what is going on with it, but at festivals old songs he performs perfectly, new songs like he is off every time.

The songs so far are amazing! Especially Charlie Brown, but every teardrop is a waterfall not going anywhere except that everything seemed all right.

So I was driving around with the Glastonbury concert playing, listening to Charlie Brown, which is the best of the new cuts, in my opinion. When I noticed something, and the same can be said about all the new tracks.
There are no choruses. Here are the lyrics to Charlie Brown:
I stole a key
Took a car downtown where the lost boys meet
I took a car downtown and took what they offered me
To set me free
I saw the lights go down at the end of the scene
I saw the lights go down and they're standing in front of me
Oooh
My scarecrow dreams
When they smashed my heart into smithereens
I be a bright red rose combusting the concrete
Be the cartoon heart
Light a fire, oh light a spark
Light a fire, a flame in my heart
We'll run wild
We'll be glowing in the dark
Glowing in the dark
Oooh ooh ooh
Ah ah aahhh
All the boys, all the girls
All the madness/families in the world
All the boys, all the girls
All the madness that occurs
All the highs, all the lows
As the room is spinning, oh
We'll run wild
We'll start glowing in the dark
So we saw an innocent liar(?)
We'll be glowing in the dark
Now, I will compare them to In My Place, the song I see as being most like it musically. Since they are comanded by a Jonny riff and guitar, with rather quite verses by Jonny and Will.
In my place, in my place,
Were lines that I couldn't change,
I was lost, oh yeah.
I was lost, I was lost,
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed,
I was lost, oh yeah.
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Yeah, how long must you pay for it?
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
I was scared, I was scared,
Tired and underprepared,
But I wait for you.
If you go, if you go,
Leave me here down on my own,
Well I wait for you.
Yeah
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Yeah, how long must you pay for it?
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Sing it
Please, please, please,
Come back come sing to me,
To me, me.
Come on and sing it out now, now
Come on and sing it out
To me, me
Come back come sing it
In my place, in my place,
Were lines that I couldn't change,
I was lost, oh yeah.
Oh yeah.
There is a clear chorus for In My Place, but Charlie Brown not that I can see. It has a verse, with the riff. Followed by another verse and the riff again. It then has a bridge and outro...Now I'll look at Every Teardrop...
I turn the music up, I got my records on
I shut the world outside until the lights come on
Maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone
I feel my heart start beating to my favorite song
And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night
Until Monday morning feels another life
I turn the music up
I'm on a roll this time
And heaven is in sight
I turn the music up, I got my records on
From underneath the rubble sing a rebel song
Don't want to see another generation drop
I'd rather be a comma than a full stop
Maybe I'm in the black, Maybe I'm on my knees
Maybe I'm in the gap between the two trapezes
But my heart is beating and my pulses start cathedrals in my heart
And we saw oh this light
I swear you, emerge blinking into to tell me it's alright
As we soar walls, every siren is a sympohny
And every tear's a waterfall
Is a waterfall
Oh
Is waterfall
Oh oh oh
Is a, is a waterfall
Every tear is a waterfall
Oh oh oh
So you can hurt, hurt me bad
But still I raise the flag
Oh
It was a wa wa wa wa wa-terfall
A wa wa wa wa wa-terfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Once again not a single chorus. We have a verse, followed by a guitar part another verse a bridge and outro. Compared to say Viva La Vida, which we all know has a chorus.
Then you have a song like Major Minus which seems to be one long chorus, with short verses. Moving to Mars once again not a single chorus, then MX/Hurts Like Heaven is almost a never ending chorus.
Anyone else notice the weird structure to the writing of the songs? I haven't had a lot of time to examine the keys and progressions of the songs, so on that note I cant be concrete on saying anything there.
Maybe they are doing a concept album where they build the tracks to act like one long song.

I think there's already a thread about this?
But anyway, I noticed that too. I like that they're very different from the standard A/C/B/C/D/C structure. I don't think they want to get boring.

theres alot of good songs with no chorus, like songs without the title mentioned in the song lyrics, I like that!
