They are getting to an interesting point, once Guy was a little 'forgotten' and now his bass comes over. I think the way it is played reminds me of radio waves when we are changing the stations.

Yeah, im a bass head, so I just love it, and I was afraid he was starting to just get forgotten, but that little half a second nugget is sweeeet

I like Guy's presence in this song. He barely gets a chance to stand out, so it's really great :)

It sounds like guitar scratching to me? But there is also really great bass in this song in general, so I really enjoy it. It would be nice for someone to put together some tabs (or I Guuuuuueeeess I could try on my own) to play. hehe :)

Go back and watch the live versions on youtube, there is at least one (that I saw) that you can clearly see jonny muting his strings and standing by while the 'scratching' bass occurs. So it can't be jonny in the live (even though it sounds like it is), which leads me to believe that its not jonny in the studio either.

looking at another video, it could be both? the video quality is too poor to distinguish really. ahhhh, it sounds like bass in the studio to me. ha

I highly doubt that Guy is replicating that distorted / fuzzy / scratching part at 0:40 in the song. It very much sounds like a guitar to me.

And as for the boys playing this fantastic song live, I was thinking that they might've had that part played back and/ or someone back stage was playing that part (since Johnny wasn't playing and it didn't look like Guy was doing it either).

I think Johnny wasn't able to play that part live because he would have had to switch tones/ pedals within a matter of a few seconds in order to carry out his riff which comes immediately after that.

Either way if it's guitar or bass, this is an incredible song. :)

The first time that I listened to the song after I bought it when it came out, I was actually thinking, "Wow, the bass in this is fantastic." Props to Guy, once again:)

If it was guitar, it could have been Matt... I can't tell if Guy does it, because they never capture him in that small moment... :P

THIS THREAD.
One of the best bass lines in MX. And if the scratchy sound is Guy, then the swoon factor rises to the sky :awesome:

Yeah, I think it's the bass. Wasn't it the bassist in Radiohead who does the same thing before the chorus in 'Creep'?

What is all the fuss about? the guitar part 40 seconds in is played from the backing track, has no one worked that out yet? 7 months into their tour???

The bass in this song is awesome! Guy is an extremely underrated bass player, but if you know where to look your in for a treat!

Well, I don't know if it's Guy playing that crunch at :40, but his bass is awesome in general in this song--better than his bass line in Violet Hill. :charming:

Maybe this video is helpful: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xjnq4x_coldplay-major-minus-where-the-action-is-festival-gothenburg-sweden-2011-06-28_music#rel-page-2. I don't think, that Johny is playing this line. You see him doing two diffrent grasps during this line played at the beginning and end of the song. My opinion: It's a mix from Chris' guitar and Guy's bass.
