Here's an interesting poll, and you may not be able to answer it for a while. Maybe take Glastonbury and then the EP in before deciding!

Live.

The studio version makes Chris' voice way too muffled. He basically sounds like he's singing through a megaphone.

I've said it everywhere already... It sounds like Matt Bellamy (from Muse) when he sings 'Feeling Good'

I prefer the live versions of most songs (that's how you can tell whether a band actually has talent), but most of that stems from hearing those songs live in person. I can tell merely from someone else's recording that the live version of "Major Minus" is immensely superior. Studio version is an example of when production outshines the actual talent.

The live version is a googolplex times better for sure. While their other, older songs are only about 100 times better live. I'm really disappointed once again.

I'm starting to get really worried about the studio versions of the other new songs.

Studio. I didn't really care for it live, but now that I've heard a proper version it's growing on me quite fast. The scream-like noises during the solo complete the song. Glad the new sound is less Chris-centric.

Live.

The live version is much more pure, and Jonny has some flippin' awesome echoes going on. The guys need to get Brian Eno away from all his little toys in the studio version--Chris's voice does not need improved in any way, shape, or form. It's perfect when it's pure.

I like the studio version for what it is. I was surprised by the sound of his voice like most other people here, but after a few plays I think it works pretty well. Someone in the other thread pointed out that the effect works in context of the subject matter and I agree - makes it sound like Chris is giving out a 'warning' through a megaphone or something, which I think is appropriate.

Also I actually really like the atmospheric effects they used in this version, almost sounds like screaming toward the end - gives it a pretty creepy vibe, which I guess is exactly what they were going for. I do like some elements of the live version better, but this is crisp and well produced IMO. Bass sounds awesome, guitar has a nice crunch to it. And the whole song is basically the complete opposite of ETIAW, which is interesting because I thought Coldplay had turned uber-cheesy when that song was revealed :P.

I like both equally the same strangely.

And no, it's actually not the same song and nobody's fighting.I don't think my explanation was far-fetched, it was merely my interpretation. If it sounded like I was making excuses for what is apparently a disappointing version of this song to a lot of people, that was not my intention. I can understand why a lot of people don't like the production though, I just personally don't mind the differences in the studio version, and both of them are pretty much equal in terms of quality IMO.

Just a side note - I remember hearing most of Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' in the form of live recordings before it came out, and I thought nearly every single studio recording was a disappointment in comparison (apart from 'Nude' :P). So I understand where people are coming from. Its just that I personally don't see a huge gap between the live and studio recording in this case.

Why do they even produce such a version when they don't want to play it live this way?
The vocals are distorted way too much (not that there'd be any need to distort it...). They are also a little distorted on Teardrop and I'd also prefer Teardrop's live version but with MM it's a difference of day and nigth for me. It's hard to recognize Chris' voice here though it always gives a song a special extra mark. Also, I really loved Jonny's part right before the 2nd verse. This marked a point where I was very happy about his guitar work on the news songs and hoped it would stay this way on the album. The live version of Major Minus completely kicked me, this one can't really get me. Coldplay's trademarks are hardly heard. You hear more Brian Eno(/U2) than Coldplay on this one and that's not a producer's job!

I thought X&Y was a little overdone productionwise on some songs but now I'm a little afraid of the LP5 production...

I'm a huge huge HUGE fan of theirs, don't get me wrong, but how the hell did they manage to mangle this in the studio? This whole New Era thing is totally and completely not them. It's like a completely different band. Listen to songs from Viva, and then this. It's not the same guys. I don't like this. They need to go back to their parachutes days.
New Era is not okay with me :(

This might be one of the only songs in the world where I drastically, drastically prefer the live version. Usually I don't care for live versions much unless I'm physically at the concert, but this live version...God, it saves us from the horrible vocal distortion. Why did they decide to do that? Not even Will's backup vocals can help out. It's so drenched in filters that I actually flinched when the vocals came in on first listen.

I'd be a hypocrite if I said I was categorically anti vocal distortion on records, since my other favorite band relied heavily on vocal filters for two straight albums. But I think vocal effects can be used constructively, and this is not one of those times. This just sounds like they were bored so they threw it on, and I can't see where it adds anything. I feel like vocal distortion shouldn't stare you in the face and make you wince, and this definitely did that (and I don't think it was just because I'd heard the clean vocals of the live version before). There's the line on "Life in Technicolor ii," where he sings "every road is a ray of light," which I think is one of the few other times Coldplay's done vocal distortion, and even though that's a very obvious use of a filter, it seems more subtle to me, it seems to fit and add something. Not so with this song.

Maybe they're testing us like those food testers they have in some of these lovely food stores! Giving us some samples and wanting our opinions after. The most well received song will go on to the album!

Major Minus - Spicy, overpowering but an acquired taste needed perhaps!

Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall - tasted sour overpowering and made my eyes water. And I swear there was an olive in there....I hate olives! This one left me spewing over the Coldplay super marketfloor...carrots and all! Mop for aisle 4 please!!!

Why did they use that effect on Chris' voice in the studio? Why hide/distort something that shouldn't be hidden/distorted?

Studio version is overproduced. Don't get me wrong, it's still good and it's a gabillion times better than ETIAW, but... maybe they should just ditch the studio and record the songs live from now on.

I agree so much, the vocals didn't sit well with me at first. I 100% agree with the comment about the life in techincolour ii distortion. I felt that the instrumentation in this song was wonderful, however they went over the top with the vocal distortions. I fell in love with Coldplay because of Chris's voice, I don't want it hidden! Jonny's part is brilliant, and I LOVE that they have Will singing.
The one thing I've noticed most about the new songs is that (to me at least) the lyrics haven't been as great as they have been in the past, I think that's what bothers me most about the whole "New Era" thing.

I think I can describe the song now. The studio version sounds like a fake plastic toy version of the live version. It doesn't have the same natural flow. And btw, what's with the ending? It sounds like a fart to me. :p

Can someone direct me to a high quality audio file of Major Minus at Rock am Ring?

Sorry, I don't have enough time to scourge the Multimedia section. :PNot that hard to find. Shouldn't have taken you longer than typing your post. :P

The filtered voice might have worked had it only been present for the intro to the song, but keeping it for the whole thing...like Chelsea said it doesn't add anything at all. I also hate Chris' screeching under Jonny's guitar solo.

LIVE. The live version has so much raw energy its ridiculous. The studio version is missing so many things...Jonny's harmonics on the interludes & Will's crashes and rimshots are just to name a few. Also, I absolutely hate whatever filter they put on Chris' voice. I'm so disappointed that they overproduced quite possibly what was going to be my favorite song on LP5. Sigh.

I think the entire studio sound of the song supports the warning/watching/media? theme perfectly, it's very clever. Maybe our ears need to get used to it, but the song itself is really great, IMO.
(But live = better.)

well be happy then , it's not going to be on the LP , I think it's a b-side.

Anyway i think the studio will grow on you, but at the moment i prefer live

I really think this is a case of having the wrong expectations based on the live version we all heard before the studio version. If Major Minus will make it as a song in LP5, I think we will all be able to appreciate it in its context. I was also disappointed by the studio version at first listen, but then I kinda let myself sink in the mood of the song and I realized just how dark this track really is (which is not really conveyed in the live version). If you can let yourself be transported into the dark distorted mood the track is painting, I think you will like it :)

I really LOVE both versions!!! This is the kind of Coldplay I am hoping to see more of on the album. I'm pleased with them, haha :nice:

I voted for the live version, which is unusual since I don't usually like live version, especially because Chris sometimes tends to change the vocals too much. But this time I prefer the song live because I prefer Chris' voice in its natural beauty. On the other hand, I think the music is veeery good in both versions.

Funny how such a question was really never posed before with songs from VLV for example...I am sure no one wonders which version is better, because we all appreciate them because they are different. I think this question came up simply because we heard the live version first...I always thought it was a weird way for Coldplay to premiere their songs. Maybe they have a masterplan...I certainly hope so. Otherwise it's a bit confusing to hear so many songs live first and then the studio version...it's nearly always bound to disappoint

I think the voice is probably being distorted so they don't give away the whole song before they release it. That being said, I still prefer the studio version. Who knows, they may undistort the voice for the official release.

There are a few songs I first heard live and it never that such a big effect on me. I also heard Teardrop only once with an iphone (no headphones => bad quality) before I heard it live. And even though I have a slight preference for Teardrop's live version, I wouldn't have made such a big deal about it.

Don't get me wrong, I like the studio \/ersion, but I for sure think the li\/e \/ersion is way more dynamic. It's packed with more excitement and I think it's because his \/ocals don't sound "tampered with." It's just pure Chris.

Welcome to Coldplaying! :nice:

To me there's nothing wrong with X&Y! :)
It was AROBTTH that got me into CP but X&Y is probably the album I listened to the most before I discovered the awesome live concert recordings that are gathered here on the site. :awesome:

Oh and thanks for KOL!
I quite like their albums (especially the older ones).
Have a look at the World of Music forum if you find the time, we're discussing LOTS of other bands in there. :)

I really like the LITTLE voice effects in Chris' voice and I really like both versions. They sound very different, maybe the whole character of the song is shown a bit better in the live versions, because they are not as perfect as in the studio version. So, the feeling of opressing, escape and fear can be better heard.
But the verse is better in the studio version, love it so much!

I can appreciate both for what they are. Live is rarely as done up as the studio version (with the exception of Lost! for sure), so I like listening to both. I have no problems at all with the studio version. His muffled voice gets that very out of this world and creepy point out there very well.

^ This. I think people are not catching the meaning of the song. It's a protest/warning song. So the voice has an effect like megaphone or something like that, as in Micro Cuts - Muse. And it has more relevance if we think that actually has something to do with Illuminati topic.

So, of course, Studio version.
