Ill listen to it more times
But hugely dissapointed about what they did to Chris Martin´s voice,
Its probably Will singing on the back.
Live version > this version
On the other hand,
Studio version sounds more powerfull, and the "UHH" is better than live.

Hmmm. I actually like the production on Chris's voice for once. It ain't just a lazy overdubbing like some other Coldplay tracks. It's different I'll give them that and I liked it...a lot! A song that will definitely need to blast through my stereos to wake up the neighbourhood.
8/10
I dont know WTF has happened to me,but the song dont "fill" me,and i liked it from the first moment
But i give it a 9 because is the best song for now :\

I really like the tekst and the music. I'm just disappointed about the singing. Why ruin a good voice?

Good song if not a distorted voice. But it could be actually a b-side, the beginning and end suggest not a good mixing.

Sadly I think MTM would have also "computer" voice, maybe because Chris thinks computer = technical = astronomy = solar system / space / stars. Would be lame if true.

The filtered vocals suit the song perfectly for me. The drums, bass line and crashing guitar crunch just ROCK! 9/10 because the lingering guitar echo from the live version is sadly omitted.

What a disappointment this, they ruined Chris amazing voice and Jonny's guitar skills a bit. I need to listen more and more to get used to it, if I ever will be. I think I will listen the Live version more, which I already did a lot the past weeks.

I like the fact that it's, like they say, overproduced. It fits the era, and they're clearly doing something different, something new.
And this definitely proves to me that the new era is NOT mainstream music. Whether you like the song or not, you just definitely don't usually hear stuff like this on radio.

Quite frankly people don't have to listen to one song after the other to be tagged as someone who doesn't listen to radio. Who gives a flying fuck whether people listen to the radio or not? If they're not they're probably listening to the greatest albums of all time while you listen to your shit that is Foster The People.

Eh . . . the live version is definitely a 10/10 no question. Could've been my all-time favorite song.
The studio version does too things wrong: it distorts Chris's voice and it takes away the echoes that were so awesome in the live versions. I give it a 7.5/10.
All in all, both versions considered, I give it an 8/10
EDIT: Although I have to admit that the vocals are slowly growing on me :uneasy:

here's my take from the WoM
I like the song more than ETIAW... then again I'd like almost anything more than that.
But I really hate that distorted vocals. Also I really don't like the melody of the verses and the lyrics... I find it to be a bit annoying to be honest. I do like the chorus bit somewhat. But to me this song has U2 written all over it. Also his vocals during the bridge is extremely annoying how high up he gets.
The song is mediocre. Not a huge fan of it, but it's not horrible.
I'd give the song a 4/10

Well, like I said in the comparison of versions thread: I don't like the production. More Eno trademarks than Coldplay trademarks which is not a producer's job.
Live: 10/10
Studio: don't know yet. 6/10 and that would be one my worst Coldplay ratings. It might grow a little. It's just such a pity because it's such a fantastic song, actually.
I think musicians should stick more to what they'd like to do live. They could easily make it sound more like the studio version on their gigs but they don't seem to want to. And I'm glad about it.

I liked the song so much more live to be honest. The sound popped a lot more. The studio version is too muddled. You can barely hear Chris's voice, Johnnys guitar or anything.
They also don't give him the same part after the first verses. Maybe they'll do another version of the song (ala Lovers in Japan Osaka Sun Remix) where they add those little bits in.
Who knows.
Live I'd give the song an 7 or 8. But the studio version is like a 5 or 6 at the highest. It's kind of a boring song...which I haven't felt a Coldplay song was since the X & Y era.

I also preferred the live version but I wouldn't go to the extremes that some people have. I'd say live version 8/10 and studio version 6/10. So about a 7 overall. The vocals don't really bother me that much, but something about the overall production has really sucked the life and energy out of the song.
Still a million times better than ETIAW though.

24-06-2011, 04:31 AM
Well after SEVERAL listens I'm ready to rate. I gave it a 5/10. Its drastically better than Every tear drop, but its by no means perfect. I'm with most people on the voice distortion thing. Its unnecessary, Chris has an amazing voice and this effect simply adds nothing to the song, resulting in the live version being much more powerful.
I enjoy the eerie vibe of the song, but once again heavy handed production gets in the way. And yes Eno's stamp is all over this. Its one thing for a producer to encourage a band to try new things, its another to just flat out make it sound like the producer had a hand in writing the song, and his influence, for me anyway, is getting old.
Overall much better than the last song, but really that's not saying too much, so I'm going to have to wait to hear MTM.

24-06-2011, 05:01 PM
Live version was better for sure, I'm getting really annoyed with how Chris' voice keeps getting altered in the studio recordings. I don't mind having voice alterations if it makes sense in the context of the song. For example Everything In It's Right Place and Kid A from Radiohead's Kid A album both had voice altering but it made sense and related to what the songs were about.
It seems that the voice alterations on ETIAW and Major Minus were added just for the sake of it with no real reasoning behind it. I'm glad Moving to Mars had Chris' natural voice used, it's one of the reasons that makes it the best song on the EP for me.

You may be right about Major Minus, I need to listen to it a few more times and see if I can work out some kind of hidden plot. And yeah MTM does have vocal effects but I like them since it's a lot more subtle than just completely going all 'computery' on Major Minus. A bit of reverb effect on the voice is fine by me.

I have not heard a Coldplay song like it, and it truly is a gem. I mean, when I first heard it, when it started, my hairs stood on end. It is incredibly catchy and I assume many people who do not like Coldplay - because of their apparant 'soppy stuff' - will love this one.

I like the theme of the song about being watched. It is true that we are always being watched and there is no privacy left. Anywhere you go someone can put you on a cell phone video or take a photo and put you on the computer. David Icke would love the theme of the crockadiles.

10/10, awesome angry/rage song, like Violet Hill to VLV album.
LOVE IT :wink2:
Definitely... has a bit of grit to it, like Politik or GPASUYF

This is my second favorite song on the album, I think. I love it live, but the studio version has a lot more intricate sound.

I'm completely indifferent to this song. :blank: It's unable to elicit any kind of emotion. Not even disdain.

One of the best songs on MX! I gave it a 10, but I didn't like it that much from the start, it grew on me.
I wouldn't change a thing, maybe I'd just add one more verse, as with every other song on MX.
I have to say, for me, it's the most U2-esque thing they've ever done.

i absolutely LOVE this song! Major Minus is my favorite from the MX album but i have to say i love it best when it was performed live at Glastonbury! Guy really gets his groove on during the euphoric/hypnotic part just before Jonny's guitar solo. i can't watch Guy play that part enough lol! this song reminds me of jimi hendrix. after i heard Major Minus and realized who it reminded me of, i downloaded JH's "All Along the Watchtower". i hope their live performance is as good when they visit Seattle!! :wink3:

Probably one of the best coldplay has done. I don't mind the auto-tune. I even think it makes the song more alluring. It's not like t-pain auto-tune or something. Lyrically, it's a mysterious song. "They gone eye watching you/ One eye on what you do/So be careful who it is you're talking to"; this is one of my favorite lines.
