i think out of all the new stuff we've heard so far, Major Minus is the best track by a MILEEEE. and it totally reminds me of AROBTTH.

but today they announced the song will be a B-side to ETIAW when its released on 26th June. this news has certainly made me depressed. i cannot believe such a brilliant song is considered a B-side. what do you guys think then? will it even have a slight chance of being on the album.

OH GOD I HOPE NOT.

IT'S MY FAVORITE COLDPLAY SONG EVER AND I CAN'T HANDLE IT JUST BEING A B-SIDE.

IT WAS GONNA BE THE TITLE TRACK.... :bomb:

if its released and you get to hear it whenever you want, why do you care if its on the album or not. if it isnt, that just means there is space for another song. more coldplay = more :)

Exactly...and if Coldplay feel they can just through THIS incredible track away, the actual album is going to be AMAZING.

I dunno, really. I just haven't liked it since I first heard it. I will give it the benefit of the doubt since I have only listened to it twice, but still haven't quite liked it. Perhaps I will when the studio version comes out, but the live version just sounded too weird. Jonny's guitar was just drowned in reverb, which kind of takes away from the acoustic guitar too. And the vocal melodies, just don't sit well with me.

ColdplayingfromKansas
16-06-2011, 08:59 PM
^ Ah, okay. Jonny's guitar is awesome, but I agree it could be toned down a bit to bring out the rest of the instruments

I bet MM will still be on the album. Aside from the fact that it's totally awesome:

Coldplay loves to put motifs and thematic elements into their albums. (Like Space stuff in X&Y, Feet touching the ground/revolution in Viva, etc).

Judging by some of the imagery and lyrics we've gotten so far, one such theme in LP5 will be that of eyes/media attention etc. The lyrics for MM "You got one eye watching you/one eye watching you so..." match that theme. Also, in the picture that Coldplay put on their twitter (in the banner above) there's a giant graffiti eye in the "ETIAW" video.

It just makes sense. I think this is mirroring what they did for Viva, where they released a so-so successful "Violet Hill" then "VLV" which did significantly better.

Whatever they're doing here, I know the end product is going to be awesome, even though we're all super confused and bewildered now.

Well said! I agree with everything except the bit about the theme for LP5, which I think may be more along the lines of Viva--rebelling and such (especially since Chris mentioned that they drew inspiration from the White Rose Movement). But I do like your interpretation too--maybe we're both partially right?

I could not agree more! Their B-sides are just so amazing. I usually feel like they should have taken the B-sides and made that the album.
MAYBE it's a b-side because it just doesn't fit right with the other songs because it's so good?

Well they always have a TON of themes/motifs/etc. in all of their albums. That's how they always seem to be tightly-wound, complete works that are near perfection.

I also think a theme will be a rebellious one, but the imagery I think will be based on a big-brother type of thing, with all the eyes and "Major Minus Media."

Maybe they're implying rebelliousness against that big brother type of thing. Isn't that what graffiti is, anyway?

What the hell? Seriously, does this mean that crap like ETIAW will fill the album, while their best songs like Major Minus will be left out as ordinary B-sides? What a huge disappointment.

Also, no Major Minus as album title, whatever it will be, it won't be half as good as we thought it would be.

This makes me think 3 things:

1. They are the best band in the world but paradoxically seem to have no taste in good music (anymore). How on earth could they like superficial shit like ETIAW more than Major Minus?

or

2. They are going for a more immature audience, leaving their old fans behind. They don't care what we think. Everybody will think about Coldplay as just another pop band and they will love or hate Coldplay for all the wrong reasons. While Coldplay are (used to be) instead a great deep mature alternative band. I was too young to be fully into their old more mature mature music 10 years ago. Now that I'm slowly turning adult, they seem to make the reverse movement.

and/or, most likely:

3. Now that Major Minus is a B-side, they know that fans who don't like ETIAW will buy the single because of the B-side. Few people will dislike both songs. Ka-ching.

EDIT: ^that also makes sense

I don't think you'll have to  On all of Coldplay's other digital single releases, you're able to buy the b-side separately from the single (even if Major Minus isn't a b-side, iTunes also has the Complete My Album feature which should let you buy the entire album for a discount without Waterfall)

major minus its clearly not a b side, if it was one, the single would be called ETIAW and not ETIAW / MAJOR MINUS, besides the fact the lyrics of major minus are printed all over coldplay instruments / clothes , I think its a single, the ACTUALL first single for the new album, ETIAW will stand alone as chrismas lights did, and the extra tracks of next week will actually be the b sides, i mean, if the single is for ETIAW , the others songs shouldnt be important at all, but they said as something special MM is being released, but the other songs were not promoted, or mentioned, i belive no ETIAW in the album, and that MM is the single, all the other new ones are in the album, maybe one not, maybe they will take out us against the world or something...

BOOOOOOOOM!

Q. Hello, Oracle
Please answer me, this is like my seventh question, and this time I'm sure it's not illogical.
I read that Major Minus is gonna be released as a B-side of ETIAW. I think that Major Minus is a beautiful song, and is a track that must be on the album. But I obviously know that B-sides are usually not included on other albums than special editions. Is it going to be included on the album?

You raise a good point. I must admit I thought the same as historically you're correct; b sides haven't appeared on the album.
All I can say is that there have been even more changes to how things (and what) are released since the last album so I wouldn't rule it out.
That said, I swear I don't know the final track listing of the album and as you already know what I am about to say... even if I did, I couldn't provide the definitive answer to your question.

SO
Things Have Changed
Major Minus ON THE ALBUM AGAIN
