Good afternoon. We're pleased to report that Coldplay will release a CD, limited edition 7-inch blue vinyl and two digital bundles of the new single Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall on Monday 27th June.

The brand new track Major Minus will be available on all formats. An exclusive version of the digital bundle - available only in iTunes Stores - will also include additional tracks to be announced next week.

This is unbelievable. I am pretty sure no one on this forum was expecting this. Right now, there's a lot of confusion as to what will finally be in LP5. Maybe, after all, they have decided to release songs in single format and what we will finally get on the album will be totally different of the music that is going to be released via singles. I pretty hope so, since as already many have pointed out, it would not be very cool to buy all the songs that will finally end on the album in single format first. Anyhow, it is clear that they are trying a new direction on the way they are releasing their music. Hopefully it will work and we will be pretty happy.

That's what I'm thinking! Maybe the songs went over SO well at festival that they're releasing them early and the songs Chris keeps coming up with more suit the album and are replacing these singles.

I really thought Major Minus was going to be in the album. But now it doesn't make much sense to release it as a b-side to ETIAW and then release again in the album. After all, maybe all the new songs we have heard until now won't even feature on LP5. That would be great news, but I highly doubt it.

I'd expect most of the new songs we've heard live to be on the album with maybe a couple not making it. If these new live songs weren't on the album just think of the setlist crisis they'd encounter when playing the unheard album material on tour + old favourites + the new live tracks we've already heard.

That said I wouldn't be surprised if a song or two we've heard aren't on the album. And I'm thinking Princess of China could be one of the new songs to be revealed next week.

I don't like that they release the extra material only on iTunes. It's unfair cause not everyone can buy from there. I'd really love to have those, but I'll just have to buy the regular one. If I want the other ones I can't find a legal way of getting them. It would be just better if they released an EP.

When they want to promote their new album, caused by a release of a single of the LP, why Major Minus isn't on the cover? ETIAW seems to be the "big song" and MM is just alongside ETIAW.

Maybe ETIAW AND MM are on LP5 (kind of double A-side) or only ETIAW and MM is the b-side. Today, I strongly believe that ETIAW is on the new album, but MM not.

Another interesting point is, that Coldplay.com wrote "ETIAW / Major Minus"...

honestly, anyone who thinks ETIAW won't be on the album is someone who doesn't want it to be on the album.

it is most certainly going to be on the album. the band doesn't need to confirm it. after three years away (to most non fans in the world) their first new song wouldn't not be on the album.

A digital bundle such as this one announced weeks after most of the die-hards had already bought a digital version appears bold. Even if you can upgrade on itunes, I'd have to buy the complete bundle because I avoid itunes and therefore bought it somewhere else.

I'm a convinced purchaser of music. But I don't like that to be exploited. To be fair, at least Coldplay never released a "Tour edition/Extra edition/Remastered only one year after release edition/..." of an album. And I sincerely hope they're not drifting into that direction. Because I'm not willing to waste my money.

As for the ETIAW/MM business...yes it's bad that we have to buy it numerous times to get all the extra content BUT nobody is making us buy all the editions. It's down to personal choice on whether you want to buy it or not. If they both appear on the album fine. You'll be buying the album because you want the other new tracks that will be on there.

Anyway, I've pre ordered the bundle and I'll get the iTunes stuff when it comes out too. I have some money sitting in my iTunes account so it would be rude not to buy it :P

1st one could be, don't know and don't really care about it. At least it wasn't released here.
And the 2nd one doesn't count for me because you could also buy the Prospekt's March EP alone. That really was well done.





The only thing that's a bit annoying is that they released the single as a 1-song download and then releasing it with all the extra stuff. But then again it's only 1 € I paid and I'm quite happy to get a physical copy now.

Fark off, don't try and dress this up as being better than it really is. YES they are REALLY technically buying the song FIVE TIMES. The song is included in the total price - or else the iTunes speshul bundle would be the same price as the normal digital price, and it's not.

Also I collect various things, however I don't feel the need to buy every single item if I do not like it. It doesn't make me any less of a collector. Just like not buying every single song makes you any less of a fan. Plus, that "ultimate" fan is just some silly ideal.

All X&Y Tour Edition added was all of the music videos on an extra DVD, plus HYSTW and Things I Don't Understand. HOWEVER you could not play this disc in a CD player, meaning the only time you could listen to those songs was to put it in the DVD player! However these two were available rather freely on the internets anyways before this release.

VLV Prospekt's Edition was merely VLV bundled with Prospekt's March.

Whereas here, ETIAW was originally released by itself, and then a while later they decide to re-release it with Major Minus.

This is most likely, with regar to one of the last tweets of Will. Until now, they havn't a final tracklist. It could be possible, that they planned with MM last year, but Chris wrote a brilliant new song or some plans for the guideline of the album changed, so MM was ripped off.

I was definitely not expecting this announcement. I am so excited that we get a studio version of Major Minus. It is one of my favorite new songs! This announcement though raises several questions. The big question for me is what does this all mean for LP5? Is it possible that neither ETIAW nor Major Minus will be on LP5? It seems odd to me that Coldplay have not confirmed ETIAW as the first single. Some had also speculated that Major Minus would be the album title/title track but I doubt they would have released that track if that were the case. I am extremely curious about the iTunes bundle. Will it be remixes/live tracks or will it be new songs? There was a story last year about how U2 played some new songs at some shows and how they had all this new material but did not know what to do with it. Chris then called Bono and told him to just pick the best new songs and release them. I love how Coldplay is doing just that and I applaud them for releasing a new track (Major Minus) instead of making us wait until October/November to hear more new music. Just one more reason I love Coldplay.

This has been planned very well by EMI (LP5 is massive for them so they will pull out everything possible), after the initial release of ETIAW, they need something to boost it back up the charts and further promotion before the new album, by then the official video should be ready and fans who buy the bundle and the Itunes exclusive bundle will count as 4 sales, we get new songs, Coldplay are around the top of the charts again in an era where the in thing with the kids is club music, EMI are happy, Fans are happy, win win for everyone! :D

For a group that squats in the middle of the road, Coldplay sure is polarizing.
The politeness of the London quartet’s music irritates those who worry that all the teeth have been pulled out of the mainstream rock enterprise. Detractors claim that all of Coldplay’s ideas have been pinched from Radiohead, Arcade Fire, U2 and Travis, and then bleached to radio-friendly inoffensiveness.
That has not stopped fans from turning all four Coldplay albums platinum, several times over. Then there’s Kanye West, who recently suggested that Coldplay would eventually be deemed superior to the Beatles, and compared frontman and bandleader Chris Martin favorably to John Lennon.
West says a lot of crazy stuff. But as a musical curator, he usually knows what he’s talking about, and he picks his collaborators shrewdly. So outraged was West when Jay-Z scooped him on Coldplay that he took to the studio and rapped about it on "Big Brother." There’s something about Martin’s approach and his clothespin-on-the-nose delivery that speaks powerfully to West. He’s hardly alone.
Maybe it’s just a case of like recognizing like. Martin may sometimes sing like Thom Yorke, but in his restless, omnivorous appetite for pop, he’s far closer to West than he is to Radiohead. Hook recognition is one of his best assets — and the first thing he recognizes about pop hooks is that they often fit best secondhand.
He is a skilled borrower, and an even better appraiser of commercial value. "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," the first single from the upcoming fifth Coldplay album, turns on a clever bit of reappropriation: the opening groove is lifted from "Ritmo de la Noche," a flimsy disco record by Argentine dance-pop group the Sacados. That record was, in turn, built around a sample from Peter Allen’s lite radio standard, "I Go to Rio." This time around, Martin isn’t even bothering to hide what he’s filched: he gives Allen a writing credit, and he’s mentioned in interviews that he was inspired to write the song after hearing the Sacados playing in the background of a movie.
So let’s rewind and take a look at how far we’ve travelled, around the globe and through time, with Chris Martin. A Londoner, he pulled a lick from a South American dance hit from 1990 that was first recorded by an Australian television personality a decade earlier, and he got the idea while enjoying an entirely different form of entertainment from the one that made him famous.
To cut through all that historical and temporal specificity and identify a riff that he can use to construct an international hit record ("Waterfall" is already on the U.S. charts) … well, that requires a special talent. It might be rightly said that if Coldplay wasn’t as rootless as it is, the band would not be able to shop around the global beat market as effortlessly as it does. Martin’s magpie nest is a jumble of decontextualized signifiers that he can mix and match as he pleases until he strikes gold.
It’s not visionary, and it might not even be particularly artistic. But it has been an effective business model.
But what about the song; how good is it?
Well, if you loathe Coldplay, this one isn’t going to change your mind. Brian Eno is back behind the boards, so the record sounds great: atmospheric, glossy, immersive. The lyrics, however, are again self-important and humorless when they aren’t maddeningly vague. The title, too, reads like a parody of Coldplay’s unfortunate taste for the morose. When Martin sings about rebel music, it’s almost as if he’s baiting the punk rockers who have always run him down.
This will be another exhibit in their case against Martin and his band, playing, as it surely will, alongside "Clocks," "Yellow" and "Viva la Vida" in perpetuity in supermarkets, laundromats, airports and diners. That’s a guarantee of immortality for Coldplay; a weird kind of immortality, cobbled together from pop scraps.

The way I see it I pre-ordered the bundle because I love collecting vinyls (I also had violet hill vinyl) and would be great to have ETIAW in full cd quality so I can import it as lossless into my iTunes. So I do not feel I wasted my money there. As for the exclusive tracks on iTunes, I really hope they will be available as single downloads, otherwise that would certainly be a rip-off. The worst thing I think was not to announce the availability of ETIAW before just about every fan had already downloaded it digitally...that was really low, probably a desperate move from the record company....

That happened to me earlier tonight, which made me think they might be preparing the release of the EP. I could be wrong, of course, but I have experienced too many bugs on their iTunes page to make me not think something is going on.
