View Full Version : Two more singles before LP5 drops?

If you ignore the bumf about plagiarism etc there is a bit about more singles possible before the album in October.
3. Coldplay, “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall”: This time around, Mr. Paltrow and his British band of rockers the cool kids love to hate circumvented any accusations of plagiarism by giving songwriting credit to Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson for nipping the theme to their 1976 hit, “I Go to Rio,” a song covered by artists ranging from Peggy Lee to the Muppets. Of course, that didn’t stop the naysayers from pointing to the similarities to Mystic’s 1990 dance-floor hit, “Ritmo de la Noche,” also based on the same tune, which Chris Martin claimed was the real inspiration for the song, when he heard it on the soundtrack of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biutiful. Martin was famously sued for “Viva La Vida” by Joe Satriani for its uncanny similarity to his 2004 instrumental track “If I Could Fly,” a case that was settled out of court. That said, “Every Teardrop” isn’t quite as hooky as “Vida,” but it’s got a forward momentum all its own, particularly Jonny Buckland’s ringing guitar jabs and its Eno-esque wall of sound. Whether there’s a backlash remains to be seen, as we have until October (and two more singles) before the full album, only the band’s fifth, drops. Just for comparison’s sake, U2’s fifth album was their breakthrough, The Joshua Tree, so the ambitious Martin and company certainly have their work cut out for them.

Who knows how reliable this is, but it will be interesting to see if it's true! :)

Urgh I hope that's not true. :(
I fear if they do that it's gonna be another two radio friendly songs...

How can you be accused of plagiarizing a song, that is based off the same song you've already credited?
The plagiarism accusations amaze me. Coldplay has a melody that somewhat sounds like some obscure guitarist's and people flip out, then they credit a song and people still flip out; all the while Lady GaGa has blatantly ripped off Coldplay, Madonna and Ace of Base and barely anyone seems to care.

And the media didn't mention When Loves Takes Over by Kelly Rowland being almost identical to another particular song...

Every artist has songs that sound the same. Green Day blatently ripped off Oasis, Oasis have borrowed from a few artists. You could argue U2 ripped of The Sun Always Shines On Tv by a-ha for Beautiful Day but they seem to get away with it. Both are brilliant songs (although a-ha's is better) but it's something that seems to just stick with Coldplay even though I do believe VLV and Satriani was coincidental...I mean can you imagine Coldplay listening to that guitar nerd? That said there's at least 6 songs that claim to be Viva La Vida rip offs which just means that all of them (including VLV) are incredibly unoriginal.
Two promo singles before the album seems about right. Though it will probably be one single with a b side I think.

Oasis "borrowed" their entire identity from the Beatles
Doesn't mean they're bad. In fact, they're pretty decent.

I can't say their identity was based on the Beatles. Physically they looked no different from their fellow bands like The Stone Roses, The La's and the such. Musically songs like Don't Look Back In Anger have hints of Beatles influences (songs such as I'm Outta Time are blatant though) but if you listen to most of their stuff then there's not much that can be called Beatlesesque. Dig Out Your Soul and Liam's work with Beady Eye is so obviously Beatles like but the rest is so minimal in Beatles comparisons. I actually think the whole Oasis/Beatles comparisons is a very lazy assessment. Just because Liam Gallagher has tried too hard to imitate John Lennon in recent years (even more so with Beady Eye..scarily) or because George Martin called Noel Gallagher (comparing him alongside Paul McCartney!) the finest songwriter of his generation doesn't really warrant the whole Beatles/Oasis likeness.

I would rather them release a single with a b-side than two separate singles. It would feel as if they were trying to give us the album piece-by-piece instead of presenting it all at once.

If I had any say in this, Princess Of China would be one of the singles. :)
Of course we're going to get Charlie Brown and Hurts Like Heaven, but I would mind them both being pressed on vinyl and backed by some extra stuff... that'd be good. Double-A-side would even be great too.

I'm not real familiar with the studio version of this song, but my wife and I were watching her on SNL recently, and as soon as we heard the first few bars of this live performance it sounded an awful lot like Clocks.
I'm referring to the first video here:

The Madonna and Ace of Base rips are less subtle than this one; but I feel it is still pretty obvious.

I've noticed that there are a lot of songs out there that ripped the intro from Clocks, they have the same chord progression or something very, very similar to it :shifty:

I agree, however, without wanting to cause any arguments, have you listened to Kylie's "Too Far" from 1998? :laugh3:

I half want Charlie Brown to be a single so more people might be able to experience it's absolute genius, and half want it to remain more of an only-on-the-album, less exposed song. :P

I'm kinda starting to think that also. I liked Viva (the song) until it went global and everyone started going crazy over it. It was the one Coldplay song my friends actually listened to, so I was hearing it a lot. Eventually, I just got tired of it and it dropped down on my list of favorites :P
But, based on the live-crowd reaction to Charlie Brown, I think we have another Yellow on our hands.

Exactly. I still enjoy Viva and Yellow a lot, and they're brilliant live, but most of my favorites are B-sides or just the lesser-known album tracks. Charlie Brown I think is a better example than Viva or Teardrop of the band's general style, so it would be good to give it more exposure, but I wouldn't want it too popular, either. You want more people to know, yet you don't want it to be too mainstream. It's a very hipster paradox. :P

Charlie Brown is vintage Coldplay. And Coldplay at their very best. Seems deemed to be a setlist classic.

^ Possibly. Although are MM and MtM considered singles at this point in time, since this is an EP?
