Excellent. I'm really glad to see they can still do it after the disappointment ETIAW is. In fact, I'm in love with the song. Makes me even think of the Rush of Blood era. Can't wait for the album version.

I can't quite distinguish the lyrics though.

YouTube - Coldplay - Major Minus (LIVE @ Rock am Ring 2011) (04.06.11) (NEW SONG!)

Video from last night, much better quality.

Lyrics (under construction)

You got one eye on what you knew
and one eye on what you do
so be careful (?) talking to

You got one eye on what you knew
and one eye on what you do
so be careful what it is you're trying to do

So be careful (...?)
So be careful when you're walking (...?)

Ooh-oooh-oooh
Ooh-oooh-oooh-ooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you

Ooh-oooh-oooh
Ooh-oooh-oooh-ooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you

You got one eye on what you knew
and one eye on what you do
so be careful 'cause (...?) is true

(...?) Don't believe a word
it's just us against the world
and we just gotta turn (...?)

I hear those crocodiles ticking 'round the world
I hear those crocodiles ticking (you go) ticking 'round the world

Ooh-oooh-oooh
Ooh-oooh-oooh-ooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you

Ooh-oooh-oooh
Ooh-oooh-oooh-ooh
Got one eye on the road and (...?)

(...?)

Ooh-oooh-oooh
Ooh-oooh-oooh-ooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you

Ooh-oooh-oooh
Ooh-oooh-oooh-ooh
Got one eye on the road and one on you
_____

I hope this is as close as possible to what Chris sings. I couldn't get the falsetto part though.

Surprised how quickly this one's grown on me. Suck it, ETIAW and everyone who said it would be a "grower". :P

But seriously, I passed this one off as generic upon first listen, but I'm liking it more with every listen.

loving what they did with GPASUYF. Not better than the VLV Tour version, but pretty good.

I think the remixed beginning of GPASUYF was bad, but it made the rest of the song sound even better than ever before, as it should be.

I quite like the comparison of those two songs. Good point there.

This is an epic song. I get a really Arcade Fire-y vibe from it. For some reason that was my first thought, even after only hearing the poor-quality version from Rock Im Park. But I bet some people will say I'm being blasphemous or something, comparing it to AF :P

Most people don't seem to understand my musical similarity connections . I get immediately instantaneously reminded of other songs or bands when I hear something new, and then I write/post about it, and most people are like "OMFG what are you on ."

Really, though, Arcade Fire. I'm serious. And I think that's why I love it.

But if the lyrics are actually "crocodiles ticking around the world" or whatever, I think it loses some points in my book

MM is so full of energy and my favourite new song by far. I am always astonished about the fact that they manage to create such super sounds with such a limited number of vocals and instruments. Whoaa, that is pure talent! Take Chris' voice and his superb acoustic guitar sound, Jonny superlicking on his guitar,Guy taking (obviously effortless) care for great baseline and Will orchestrating the rhythm and some vocaling and you have the recipie for superb music. I really, really, really like MM!! (as of all other Coldplay songs, including ETIAW that needed some adjusting for me but is brilliant in it's way and superb for live performances).

THis is probably the new name of the album. I head it would start with an "m" and have two words. Based on that, Coldplay have had their albums named after a song on each of their albums.

Has anyone else noticed the Peter Pan references in both Major Minus and Charlie Brown?
Charlie Brown: "Took a car downtown where the lost boys meet” (lost boys = boys who fall out of their prams when the nurse isn't looking)
Major Minus: "I hear those crocodiles ticking around the world” (In Peter Pan, Captain Hook is followed around by a crocodile who ate his arm and a clock).
What could this mean?

Just read an article about the HJF, the journalist wrote that in Major Minus there's kind of a chorus inspired to 'Sympathy for the Devil' by the Rolling Stones. I honestly didn't know the song and gave a listen to it. I guess it's the uh-uuuuh that's similar...has anybody heard anything about this?

Tryptophan
10-06-2011, 02:21 PM
What's HJF?

Nvm, you're talking about Heineken Jammin Festival yeah

Seriously, never heard about Sympathy for the Devil? :shocked2:

I don't see the resemblance, apart from the woohoow part, which isn't even that close.

How do we know this song was "Up With The Birds"?

That's what I'd like to know. Why did we all automatically assume that MM was actually UWtB? It doesn't mention anything like it in the lyrics . . .

Maybe because UWtB was a title we already knew was a possibility for an LP5 song?

PeeJay
10-06-2011, 10:23 PM
UWtB or not, I like all the new songs but MM really does it. Man o Man, The way Jonny plays the guitar. Maybe it isn't that supertechnical or whatever, the licks Jonny comes up with, they get to you and stay with you forever and they always add that special kind of Coldplayish sound I like so much.

Yeah that title was leaked before. Someone must have been quite sure that this was the song, and the rest of us followed. I don't know.

EDIT: ^I agree, somtimes I think he is the only one who's always at top level, but that would mean I'd just be bashing the rest of the band which isn't true. They can all rock for sure.

This song is absolutely amazing. The best use of acoustic guitar too besides UATW obviously. And Jonny absolutely rocks this song. In every possible way. AHHH. I love Jonny so much.

The lyrics remind me a little of Billie Jean (well I've been listening to the Coldplay cover too much) but with all the "be careful's" in there. :D

Cleggy
16-06-2011, 04:13 PM
Coldplay have never put a B-side on an LP since they first started. It's unlikely that it'll be on the album. It also means that the album is unlikely to be called Major Minus if it is indeed just a B-side.

RunForTheHills
16-06-2011, 04:18 PM
I really hope this ends up on the album regardless (I have an inkling it will, judging from the insignia they are wearing on their jackets, and the fact they've played it at every show so far), I'm thinking they're putting it out there early knowing that the album won't be out for a good while. Maybe they're just using the physical release of ETIAW as a means to do it, but I guess we're just going to have to wait and see. I'd be very disappointed if they left it off though, already a bit miffed that they consider ETIAW good enough to release as an actual single.
