Austin City Limits performance announced
17 May 2011 6:00 am
Coldplay to perform at Texas festival in September

Good morning. It's just been announced that Coldplay are one of the headline acts at this year's Austin City Limits festival, which takes place at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The band will top the bill at the first night of the 3-day event, on Friday 16 September.

The 3-day passes for ACL sold out before the line-up was announced, but day tickets are still available. They go on sale today (17 May) at 10am Central Time, costing $90. Click here (http://www.aclfestival.com/tickets/) to visit ACL's site for more information and to buy.

Coldplay now have 20 shows in the diary, in 17 different countries. Head to our http://www.coldplay.com/live.php for full details.

Sorry, Ian and mods, I know this probably belongs in the live section, but I was so excited I just needed to post!

The lineup for the 10th annual Austin City Limits Festival was just announced and Coldplay is the Friday night headliner!
I was hoping, hoping, hoping for this, and nearly died when I saw their name on the list!
I've got my 3day passes already, so I'm ready for September!!

btw, hi again to everyone... I haven't been on in a while! :)

I know, it really has been quite awhile!
Yah, we got our 3 day passes too. So excited! And like you, I had been guessing based off their previously planned summer festival dates that they would be at ACL but seeing it on the lineup is a relief. And since they'll be around the same time as Kanye I'm hoping it'll be easy-ish to get close.

Me too! are you going?

@Lauren- yep. I was so happy to see they aren't playing opposite Arcade Fire... that would've hurt! I know we probably won't get any new stuff, but it'll be awesome to see them again!

Yah! I don't mind missing Kanye. Yah, I was thinking they might have the album out by then, but at the same time maybe not. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have it out. But it'll be great anyways.

Ohhh...I want to go, and it's dirt cheap to fly to Austin from California...it's my birthday weekend, too. Just need to convince the husband...

Ah, that shouldn't be too hard....and even if you just go on Friday, you can spend a couple days just playing around in Austin. :wacky:

Deciding on weather to do just Friday or Friday and Sunday. Arcade Fire and Elbow on Sunday. Soccer match in Houston on Saturday so that means a whole shit load of driving if I do the Sunday as well. :\

The best 'gets' of 2011 ACL Fest

The full lineup for the Austin City Limits Music Festival was released just after midnight, so now all the folks hoping the rumors that Stevie Wonder and/or Kanye West will be playing can rejoice. In the festival booking biz, those are known as "good gets," acts that promise not only entertaining sets but also expand the parameters of the lineup from previous years. That's why Stevie and Kanye are better gets than Arcade Fire and Coldplay, who've already left their sonic footprints on the Great Lawn of Zilker Park.

Our staff ranks Charles Attal and company's bookings, not just on talent, but also on the acts' GQ — "get" quotient. Contributing are Michael Corcoran, Joe Gross and Peter Mongillo.

4. Coldplay. Does this lineup even need Chris Martin and his pawnshop piano? Back in 2005, when Coldplay was the band of the moment, they set a standard for ACL headliners that even Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers couldn't meet the next year. But since then they've been slagged as pop sellouts and paid for an addition to Joe Satriani's house. With ACL four months away, a lot could happen, however. The band's long-awaited fifth album, produced by Brian Eno, could come out and make the Cold ones red-hot again. But what's special about this booking — the first time a true Sunday night headliner (Ben Harper was a last resort in 2004) has returned — is that Coldplay is showing that they love ACL enough to come back with three other acts as top dogs. Nothing better than a band with something to prove.

Ivet, I think there are a ton on Austin's craigslist right now. They might be ridiculously expensive though. If you're willing to take a little bit of a chance, you can almost definitely get them in the week prior to the festival, and often for not much above face.

Pretty much any hotel you can get into downtown should be good. You'll likely take the shuttle bus from Republic Square Park to Zilker. Just make sure you're west of I-35. I can't vouch for the quality of all of them, but you hopefully can find something not too expensive.

The hotels out at the airport are all pretty decent and way cheaper than downtown. The ones where East Riverside Dr meets 71 are all safe and clean. If you don't have a car there is a city bus there that goes downtown where you can catch the ACL shuttle out to the park.

Marcus, you should be able to get tickets closer to the day if you want them. Last year I hadn't gotten tickets yet and there were a ton on sale the week before. Some will be ridiculously overpriced, but you should be able to find people who are asking a more reasonable amt, esp. as they get desperate to sell.

Oh ok, great thanks! Yeah, I found some on Ebay that were about $150 and was tempted, but if this is the case, maybe I will wait as it is four months away... BREATHE... BREATHE...

jenflor

@Ivet- it'll be through brokers or ticket holders who decided to sell theirs.

Just to keep in mind when buying from someone- Three-day passes face value (non VIP) were $185. Single day are $90. Most will mark up a bit, but some people are really bad about it. You might want to decide how much you're willing to spend, and buy them as soon as you find some that meet the criteria! Good luck!

I'll be festival-hopping around the country this summer, but the fact that ACL occurs after school starts up again means it's out of the question for me. Kind of a shame, as even though I'll have seen most of these acts at other festivals (except Elbow...had to miss them at Coachella and I really want to see them), it's still a really solid lineup overall.

Hope everyone going has a blast, though!

Any idea how many tickets, total, were sold? I'm not a big fan of festivals, but the things I will do for Coldplay. I saw Mumford and Sons (with Old Crow Medicine Show - who were awesome) a few weeks ago, in a GA setting, and it, um, got a bit crowded in the front, and there were only 8000 people! I haven't been to a festival since the late 80s!

Thank you! I was just about to ask a similar question and you answered it. :) I just learned about Coldplay playing on Friday last night and the Friday passes were already sold out. :(. Do you know if they re-release or resell tickets of people who aren't able to make it on the official website, or are these tickets mostly found on ticket re-sale websites?

I've bought tickets from ebay sellers before and had no trouble. But this guy only has one sale, previously. But with a BIN price of $350, it looks to me like he bought extra tickets with the sole intent of reselling them. Have you looked at stubhub.com, too? They guarantee their ticket sales, so if you're worried about ebay, then you might try there. http://www.stubhub.com/fanprotect-guarantee-legal/

I guess this time won't be like the one in 2005. I mean, it wont be on a TV studio... or yes????

This is the Austin City Limits Music Festival. The one in the tv studio is "Austin City Limits". The fest is put on once a year. The show tapes throughout the fall. Typically, artists who appear at the fest do record an ep of Austin City Limits, which is what Coldplay did in 2005. They played the festival, then recorded an episode of the show, which aired later. :)

How many songs will they play?

I know the one I went to they played 25 songs...

I think I would rather just wait till they come back on tour with a full set list.

Would love to see them but 350-400 dollars too see them for a half a set is a little steep.

That's true... but last year Phish played the main stage over The Strokes, so who knows how they determine that. It does look like a lot of people on fb are pissed that they're going to have to choose between kanye and coldplay.

Ahh, you should of seen the outrage from everyone on FB for Muse vs Coldplay at Lolla in a few weeks. I don't blame them though. I've never been to Austin so I am super excited for this, I hear it's an amazing city :D

Yeah, Muse v. Coldplay would be pretty brutal. Glad I didn't have to make that decision, esp. if I'd gone with the friend I'm going to ACL with. Her favorite band is Muse; mine's Coldplay!

Austin is an amazing city! Will you be here for the whole weekend, or just Friday?

It'd be awesome if they'd play a little longer than their allotted time. But, Stevie Wonder does have a few decades worth of material more than them! ;)

^Hmmm... there's a ton to do! You should definitely try to check out Barton Springs Pool- it's a natural, spring fed swimming pool. Very cool. (though, it's directly across the street from Zilker Park, so I'm not sure if it will be impossible to get into that weekend). You can also watch the bats come out in the evening at the Congress Street bridge (over LadyBird Lake).
There are tons of great restaurants on Barton Springs (just down from Zilker Park). Up at 6th and Lamar is another great shopping/eating area, and the big awesome Whole Foods is there, too.
If you're interested in seeing more music, check out the schedule for The Parish. It's on 6th street and is a really cool, small venue. There will also be ACL aftershows going on all weekend... I think they're supposed to be announced a little closer to the date.
The W Hotel is the newest hot spot in town- a cool place to hang out, get a drink and people watch. There's also a lot of boutique shopping in that area.
I'll keep thinking about it and try to come up with more restaurant/activity suggestions!

Though this wasn't directed at me, thanks for this info! We are flying in Thursday afternoon, Festival on Friday, no plans for Saturday and flying home Sunday morning. It's my son's 16th birthday, so we should be home for than ;) We are staying at the Hyatt Regency - I've seen it on a map, but is it walking distance to Zilker Park or should we look for a shuttle or cab?

Hmm... it's definitely within walking distance, but it's a long walk. With the combo of the heat and the fact that you'll be walking/standing all day, you'd probably be better off taking a cab. The official ACL shuttle probably would be more trouble for you than a cab, because you'd really be going out of your way to get to it. But the hotel might even do some sort of shuttle out to the park... it's worth checking out!

Oh, and as for other things to check out, I can't believe I forgot to mention South Congress (SoCo). Lots of great shopping (ranging from quirky to boutique) and great restaurants, too (esp. Guero's and El Sol y La Luna).

YouTube to stream Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits

NEW YORK (AP) — YouTube will live stream Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits in the video site's continuing push to bring music festivals to digital screens.

The Google Inc.-owned YouTube will announce Friday that it will present online coverage of the festivals, two of the summer's largest. YouTube has previously streamed festivals such as Tennessee's Bonnaroo, San Francisco's Outside Lands and, earlier this year, Southern California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, both produced by C3 Presents, will be presented with extensive live concert coverage from the various festival stages. Dell and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. will sponsor the streaming.

Chicago's Lollapalooza takes place Aug. 5-7 and will be promoted with a "Lollapalooza Week" on YouTube. Exactly which acts will be streamed is yet to be announced, but this year's top performers include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse and My Morning Jacket. It's the 20th anniversary for the Perry Farrell-founded event, which began as a touring festival.

"For those of us who can't make it — we have YouTube," said Farrell in a statement. "Be a voyeur to this year's Lollapalooza. Watch as musicians offer their souls and the crowd devours them. You just may forget that you aren't really there."

Austin City Limits, which runs from Sept. 16-18 in the Texas capital, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Its acts include Kanye West, Stevie Wonder, Arcade Fire, Coldplay and My Morning Jacket.

For YouTube, the deal represents growth toward an increasingly robust digital festival-going experience. Streaming festivals is appealing to the site because sponsors like having their names attached to the well-known events, and users typically stay longer than they might for three-minute videos. Viewing length can average nearly an hour.

"This allows us to showcase multiple artists each day, which is really exciting to users," says Dana Vetter, YouTube's music marketing programs manager. "And we can hope to expect longer viewing times from people who catch one set and trickle into the next one."

How many tune in will depend partly on which acts are streamed, but online audiences for festivals often number in the tens of millions and can even — over the full weekend — rival the audience YouTube attracts for live events like the royal wedding in April. About 72 million people watched YouTube's coverage of Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding.

"In the past 12 to 18 months, we've come a really long way in terms of live music," said Vetter. "There's a huge audience connected with these things. The trajectory of live music has come a long way and we hope to see it continue."

There will be a primary live stream of performances as well as a secondary feed of the backstage areas and interviews. Interactivity with Facebook and Twitter will also be integrated. Videos will remain on YouTube for four weeks after the festivals.

In the last few years, mega-festivals have increasingly spread into the digital space where music fans unable to make the trek (or those who simply would rather avoid mud and heat) can follow along online. Vevo, the joint venture of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Abu Dhabi Media Co., streamed acts from this year's Bonnaroo. National Public Radio will webcast this year's Newport Folk Festival (July 30-31) and the Newport Jazz Festival (Aug. 6-7).

Austin, TX (PRWEB) August 15, 2011

Austin City Limits (ACL), the legendary public television music series, today is announcing the return of Coldplay for the 2011 television season. The internationally acclaimed rock group will record the show on Thursday, September 15, 2011, leading up to their headlining performance at the 10th Anniversary of the Austin City Limits Music Festival (http://www.aclfestival.com/).

The upcoming taping is Coldplay's first performance at The Moody Theater but marks the band's return to the Austin City Limits stage after several years. "The band has truly become a legendary rock group and we're eager to share the upcoming performance with fans nationwide."

In addition to Coldplay, episodes featuring Joanna Newsom, Arcade Fire, The Decemberists and more will all air as part of Austin City Limits' 37th season premiering this fall on PBS on October 1, 2011 (check local listings).

The ACL studio only held a few hundred people. The Moody holds around 2700 so that increases our chances. If we don't get in and there is a huge demand they may do another satellite transmission to a second venue. Last time they did a satellite simucast to a theater. Got to see songs that didn't air plus all Chris' fuck ups. :p

Didn't realize this thread was here!!! We have 3 of us meeting in Austin for the whole festival, and only two of us can enter for the ticket lottery. We're looking for another person who's entering the lottery but might not have anyone to go with, so that we can make a pact to try to get the extra person into the show too (okay, that probably doesn't make sense, does it)??? PM me for details if interested :-)

The way the tapings normally work is that you enter a lottery online to get tickets. It's very difficult to get them because they normally fill the place with VIPs and donors before releasing the rest as "space available". For this show, I would be surprised if they offered very many space availables. If you win some, you have to show up at the venue early to wait in line, otherwise you don't get in the available space. ;)

As far as I know, they're open to anyone who can be in Austin to see the show. I hope that CP will have a contest or that ACL will offer a bunch to fans because it'd be real shame if they didn't. I know a bunch of Coldplayers got into the last one...don't know if it's because they won tickets or because they knew someone. At any rate, seeing them here is going to be preferable to baking in the ridiculous Texas sun on Friday!

AHHHHH. I've lived in Austin my whole life and as long as I can remember I've wanted to go to an Austin City Limits taping. I was so mad I didn't know about Coldplay's first appearance there, and now this is the perfect chance! I'll be going to ACL fest. but this would just add to the amazement. And I would definitely be able to go. I have Thursday classes but my latest one ends at 3:20 technically and classes usually get out a little early. Takes like 45 minutes to ride the bus back to Austin from San Marcos...could meet my parents in town (since they'd want to go too)...this is all if I were even lucky enough to get tickets though. Anyways this is really awesome!
I can't believe this is all only a month away! :dazzled:

So how DO you get tickets?!?!?

Oh well, only time will tell!

Make sure you register on the ACL tv blog. They'll announce when you can enter about a week before the taping.

It's getting closer, guys!!

It hadn't even occurred to me we might hear Paradise!

Cool! We'll have to figure something out. Are you all getting in Thursday too, Dianne?

 Good luck to everyone!

We land in Austin at 4:30 on Thursday. Then we leave Sunday - I'm going home and my husband has a meeting in South Carolina on Monday. We only have festival tickets for Friday.

Everybody with a ticket is a lucky person - not just because they will see Coldplay, no, also because they will see the first live performance of Paradise. ;)

I went to ACL in 2005 JUST to see Coldplay, and didn't arrive until about 30 minutes before they went on. I was a mile away. BUT, I think if you get there and just keep worming your way forward you should be able to get a pretty decent spot. Good luck!!

We will be getting there earlyearly. I looked at the lineup, and I actually like some of the earlier bands. We saw Old Crow Medicine Show with Mumford and Sons as part of the Railroad Revival Tour earlier this year, and really liked them. I like Ray Lamontagne, too, but haven't seen him perform before. We are in it for the long haul. LOL

It can vary but at Lollapalooza the crowd gathered very fast. I think around 3:00 PM, it was so crowded that you couldn't even move and it was impossible to get to the front. I am planning on camping out all day for this show too. It's a long day but it was so worth it once they finally came out :)

I'm actually staying at a hotel near the airport because it was cheaper for me :) but I will be taking a cab to the downtown area of Austin early that morning. They offer a free shuttle to Zilker park from downtown beginning at 10 AM(gates open at 11.) My best friend will be in Austin with me and we really hope we can get tickets to the Austin City Limits taping!

I'm planning on getting there early, too.. probably around 11. I like most of the bands on the stage before Coldplay, so it should work out well. Just so you know Dianne, Old Crow Medicine Show pulled out of the fest (I was looking forward to seeing them again, too). Brandi Carlile is taking their spot. I am so torn, because I want to be up front, but don't know if I can handle standing in one spot ALL DAY LONG! l0wxo2 (I'm sorry, I haven't caught your name... Hey ya'll! I'm a college student living in Austin, and can't wait to see Coldplay! No matter what the cost, I am going to see Coldplay both Thursday (ACL live) and Friday night. I have my tickets for Friday night. In fact, I've got an extra one-day pass for Friday that I will sell to a lucky Coldplayer for face value -- $90! I will be getting there between 10-11:30 am (haven't decided yet), so let me know and I can meet up with you and give you the ticket. I'm not sure I can email it. Anyway, I would love to meet/ hang out with any of yall that are getting there early thursday or friday. Ill be in line/ waiting early all day! I just went running by where both concerts will be yesterday, while listening to VLV/DAAOHF!

Oh, that's a bummer about OCMS. I really want to be on the front. Lately, my Coldplay karma has sucked (meaning a cancelled show and at UCLA where my "full-view" seat was completely obstructed) so I'd like to actually see a show, and if it means all day in the sun, I'll do it... We are staying at the Hyatt Regency, which looks to be fairly close to the park, but I don't think walking distance. We only have tickets for Friday - has anyone received theirs yet?

ACL just posted on twitter that they were mailed out yesterday, I think. You should be getting yours soon!

Guys, those of you coming in from out of town need to be prepared for EXTREME HEAT. We've had a record breaking run of 100+ degrees here (I think we're somewhere like 69 days this summer, 40-something of which have been in a row). It's brutal. Mid-September shouldn't be as hot, hopefully, but it will still be very, very hot... probably mid-upper 90s. Unless it pours! :P

Ditto this everyone! The festival is 3.5 weeks away and the temperatures this week are expected to be around 105 F every day. That's coupled with Texas humidity, so it feels much, much hotter than that. The word "brutal" describes it perfectly. September probably won't be much cooler; I'm not holding out for temps under 100. :\ If you plan to camp out all day at ACL Fest, you'll need to be very careful. I plan on being there fairly early too. :)

I know. It's the only thing I'm worried about. :/

Ridiculously hot. Face of the sun hot. Fucking hot even for Texas, which is always fucking hot. Last week, highs were between 108-112 EVERY DAY. So hot it's still 98 degrees at 10:30 at night. BUT, I have seen a tiny little glimmer of hope. The highs for this week are between 90-95, with nighttime lows in the 60s. Let's all hope it carries over to next week!

And, just asking here... is it possible to work together to try to secure spots? So that we could each take turns getting out (for food, drink, bathroom) at least for part of the day? I know as it gets later in the afternoon it'll be impossible to get back in after getting out, but maybe in the early afternoon?

Oh man, that is hot! I live in Vegas and am used to the heat.. it's been really hot here lately too.. between 100-110 degrees but does Austin got humidity too?

I absolutely want us to work together to secure our spots. We did that at Lolla but by 2:00 PM, it was impossible to get back to the front. I think we should meet up somewhere before the gates open (maybe some place for breakfast that may be near the park) that way we can go in together.

7 September 2011 10:37 pm
Enter for the chance to attend next week's taping
http://coldplay.com/images/news_line.png

Good evening. On Thursday next week (Sept 15), Coldplay will record a performance for the Austin City Limits TV show, at The Moody Theater in Austin. The show is due to broadcast on US television later in the year.

ACL has allocated 165 pairs of floor level passes to give away to Coldplay's online fans. If you would like to win a pair, simply click here (http://www.klru.org/acl/) and enter your details, before 12pm CT on the September 9.

Please note, the prize consists only of the passes - transport and accommodation is not included, so please be sure that you can make it to Austin on Thursday before entering (the taping begins at 8pm).

Those winners chosen at random by ACL will receive an email notification with details about the taping and how to get their tickets (which will be strictly non-transferable).

Good luck!

Thanks for the info! 165 pairs, so only 330 tickets total? Yikes... Is this separate from the ACL lottery being done on the ACL website?

^No, it's not separate. Just saw tweets from ACL directing everyone to coldplay.com to enter there for the Coldplay taping.
Sooo.... yeah. Not sure how I feel about my chances. :(

Even if we don't win, we should go down there and line up so if the people who won and can't get there don't show up, they can maybe squeeze us in. If not, then booze is near by.

Our flight lands at about 4:30 on Thursday, so we will be there or where ever after that!

So if they are supposedly giving away balcony tickets on Friday, we won't be notified about today's tickets by then, will we? So there is a possibility we'd end up with both?

$555 each? Ouch. And the terms and conditions are kind of crazy. They won't honor your purchase if it leaves them with a single ticket, but they will sell multiple tickets, just as long as they aren't left with a single. Wonder how many they got??? Sucks...

I mean, how can the person who purchases them use them? As far as I know they are non-transferable. So the name who won would have to go in too, no? I hope someone doesn't buy it and end up not getting in.

I was actually just coming on here to post this that I found on Austin's craigslist:

Coldplay ACL taping tickets for sale - $500 (austin)
Date: 2011-09-07, 6:32PM CDT

Two floor tickets for $500 each

!! This pisses me off!!!
I saw your posts about the ebay tix, Dianne and Lauren. And I was thinking JimmyD's right... It says specifically on all the contest stuff that the tickets are non-transferable. But ugh. The thought that some jerk out there got them over true fans (us!) is really infuriating.

That's what happened at the UCLA concert last month, too. People had bought free tickets on craigslist and ebay and their names had been photoshopped onto the printout. When you registered for the tickets, it created a specific code associated with only your name and they scanned every single ticket and matched with official government id - my kids had to bring their passports because they have driver's licenses yet. People who bought their tickets aftermarket were basically screwed - out the money and not let in. There were a few tickets for sale (it was a benefit for the Grammy Foundation, too) and I think some people were able to get those. We saw quite a few people in the "fraud" line :( Probably what will happen with these tickets, too.

Oh damn, I didn't even realize that they were doing the floor tix giveaway until it was too late. I thought I signed up for the newsletter so that it would tell me about that on time, but I got a newsletter too late for it. So I was still able to enter for balcony but not floor.
Oh well. Doubt I would get in anyways. It's so annoying the way these things work. Everyone should just get the chance to buy tickets without most of them having already gone to people who make huge-ass donations or whatever. Meh.
But I'm still really excited about ACL with it being less than a week. I don't plan on camping out at the stage cause I plan to get my money's worth out of every day. But I do plan on showing up to the stage some amount of time early, depends on when I can convince my friends to go.
And there's another Lauren in here eh? Only slightly confusing. :P

venuslovebug2

Don't buy tix from Craigslist or Ebay....the tickets are nontransferrable and they are not supposed to be sold. Also, the price is outrageous! If they'd just give the tickets to real fans in the first place, this wouldn't even be happening. I hope ACL takes action on these scalpers.

On a side note, I got tickets to the taping!! I'm SO excited!!!! I cannot wait.
