Reports - Coldplay to visit South Africa in October 2011 (announcement expected Monday)

Coldplay will visit South Africa in October 2011 for two concerts, one in Joburg and one in Cape Town, according to hints from certain local media outlets and DJs overnight. But there is a media embargo on releasing official announcements through the stations until Monday morning - so we've heard.

That embargo is being maintained by Prime Media’s radio outlets until tomorrow. Only then will an announcement about a visit by "one of England's biggest arena bands who are coming to South Africa for the first time" (as hinted at on one of the stations yesterday afternoon) be made. Earlier today, 94.7/KFM radio jock Mark Pilgrim (http://twitter.com/MarkPilgrimZA) also made a number of not so subtle hints about the announcement on-air.

His 'clues' included a suggestion that the band has 4 members and that they hail from the United Kingdom. The clincher by far though was his suggestion that one of band members has a child named Apple (Chris Martin does with his wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow).

With that sort of information around, it’s really not surprising that well connected people (connected in the interwebs sense) are again in a position to beat the official information release. Suspicions are for earlier in the month rather than later as Coldplay are scheduled to appear at the Rock in Rio festival on 1st October, and could hop across to visit South Africa from there.

At least that is what all the rumour and gossip is telling us. You’ve gotta love a good and groovy live concert rumour mill. The promoters and media houses get forced into meeting press release embargoes and the Twitterverse gets to talk all they want. Should the information turn out to be accurate – and there’s no obvious reason why it won’t – then the concerts in South Africa will be the only true Coldplay concerts for 2011. All their other scheduled 2011 live appearances so far are at Music Festivals.

According to the Bla Bla blog (http://www.blabla.co.za/2011/05/07/coldplay-south-africa-tour-october-2011/), dates being suggested are for Cape Town only at this stage, and the dats they've picked up is the 5th - a Wednesday. Could it be that Joburg will see weekend dates around those? We’ll wait and see what news Monday brings, and will add the official concert dates and ticket information to this as soon as it is confirmed.

Not many but if http://www.kfm.co.za are trying to keep this news a secret until tomorrow they're not doing a very good job of it, they're promoting Coldplay's visit in their jingles!

Listen live is working. http://www.kfm.co.za/kinteractive/streaming/streaming.asp

I'm South African!! I've been just about dying over this news for the past two days! I sincerely hope that there is a show in Joburg, as I wouldn't be able to make a show on a Wednesday. I will have to travel quite far either way, but I've been waiting for this for quite a few years, so I am extremely excited!

I'm sure there are a couple. And now you have one more!

Thanks for highlighting our BlaBla Blog post from the weekend guys. As others have mentioned, the radio stations have been doing a ridiculous job of keeping things under wraps over the weekend.

Confirmation came on air this morning. Cape Town on Wednesday 05 October at the Cape Town Stadium. Johannesburg on Saturday 08 October at the FNB Stadium. Tickets for both go on sale via local ticket merchant Computicket on Thursday this week.

I'll keep you updated as we get more details and information.

My wife and I will definitely try to go!

Sorry for possibly being ignorant but is there any type of Coldplay fan club or something to buy presale tickets to these shows? If anyone can advise I would appreciate it. I might be missing obvious things on their site.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi,

I am planning to going to the Cape Town show with my wife and I'd like to know what (if any) the presale procedure for Coldplay is?

If there's a fan club or membership that I can join for this privilege I will do so, I just really do not want to miss out on this opportunity.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Malherbe

There is no where you can go to get pre sale tickets. I would recommend doing it all official to make sure you don't get ripped off. Which is,

'from Computicket.com and 083 915 8000 at 9am (local time) on Thursday 12th May. '

By this you are making sure you won't get ripped off. :)

Hi and welcome to Coldplaying! Coldplay does not generally have presales nor a members club that provides an advantage unfortunately. So it will be first come first served. I would however keep an eye/ear out on the local media to ensure you don't miss any promotions that arise from than angle :)

I am a South African and I just cannot believe they are coming to SA- I am so excited it is ridiculous! It is such a shame that they aren't coming to Durban, it is so expensive to travel to Joburg for a concert. If anyone has any idea on when and where they will be going on sale I would REALLY appreciate it! The Kings of Leon ticket sale was horrendous and hardly anyone could get tickets as the lines were so long. Please let me know! Thank you in advance.

I am very worried about tickets. I am more than willing to travel to Joburg for this, but I am just worried that there will be an issue with Computicket on the day. Fingers crossed that everything works out though, and seeing that the stadium holds a ridiculous amount of people, we should be able to get some form of tickets even if they are not golden circle. I am too excited!

how will this show (first non-festival) differ to the festival shows?

Setlist?
Stage?
Fireworks/lazers/etc?
number of songs played?
types of songs played (more old/more off lp5)?

Was wondering who's looking at making the trek to South Africa for the shows?

I lived in SA for a summer, and theres no way Im going to miss my favorite band, in my favorite country.. All my friends cant afford the trip, but if anyone is looking for a pal, Im going 100%. (God Cape Town is the greatest city on the planet!)

Im 21 and from Los Angeles, and if anyone wants to talk, PM me!

Ideally, I would want to make Cape Town and Johannesburg. Anyone thinking similar thoughts?

I think it's absolutely wonderful that you're willing to make such a trip to see Coldplay! Cape Town is without a doubt the most beautiful city I have ever been to.
Just a heads up, tickets are selling very fast for both shows, and may already be sold out, so it would be best to buy now if you haven't bought tickets already.

Travelling from London to Cape Town to see this. I will regret it when my pocket is empty but to see Coldplay perform in such a fantastic part of the world is something I can't afford to miss. Hope to see fellow travellers there. Question; if the album isn't due until late October, then is it just going to be a warm up show? This is the only thing that's peeving me slightly. I'd much prefer to listen and hear the full album before I see it all performed live (I love to sing along). What did they do last time?

lutzno
03-08-2011, 02:52 PM
i seriously doubt they would play a "warm up show" to 2 of their biggest stadium crowds ever! not sure theyve ever played in a stadium to over 80 000 people...

Fairycat101
14-08-2011, 03:34 PM
Just a word to the travellers, the traffic plan has now been released, and you can buy tickets for the "park and ride" or "park and rail" services to and from the stadiums. you can search for 'coldplay' on computicket.com and it should come up in the results.

Its not often that big artist comes to South Africa, so when they do its usually a huge event. Nothing has been published about the streaming of the concert. If it was being streamed it surely would have been posted on the interweb cos it would be a first for SA!

They *don't* usually allow it, I didn't go to U2, but I know their fans weren't allowed to queue before 7am on the day. I'm flying in to Joburg on Friday afternoon, and was planning to go sometime on Saturday morning to start queuing...

Excited to see pictures of the whole stage and if there is a "acoustic stage" again (hopefully). To be honest the stage doesn't look very fresh or extraordinary and it disappoints me a bit.

I'm also excited to see the setlist and the length of the concert. I hope for minimum two hours and maybe 1-2 new songs (Up in Flames, DLIBYH?)...

I don't think they will be playing any new songs from MX until after the official release date. Up in Flames was an exception because, by the time the show is broadcast on tv on New Year's Eve, the album will have been out for 2 months.

I just think that there are also people who aren't that great fans like you and me. They just like some songs and want to see how they are live. The prices aren't that cheap (naturally) and I really believe they could play 4-5 songs more in order to play at least two full hours. I'm so satisfied with everything of the new era, I love all the songs, the new style and the brave of the band. The festival sets were incredible but is it so amazing that there is a guy who noticed that one and a half hour aren't so long for a big stadium show with expensive prices?
Its just a little point in the whole thing and I can't see that there will be criticism if they play 4-5 songs more.
I don't mean they should play more new songs of the album, but just some old favorites like Lovers in Japan, Trouble, Talk/Speed of Sound, Strawberry Swing...

Mimixxx
05-10-2011, 10:16 PM
I agree, I think when the prices were so high and it was the first time they'd ever played there it wouldn't have hurt to have added a few more songs (from any era)

We don't need more new songs...they could play just some older classics like Speed of Sound or LiJ or Trouble and so on.

Can't believe the setlist is right. Til kingdom come? Charlie Brown and Major Minus changed positions?!

He did note that those 2 where interchangeable. So I believe it's Major Minus early, and Charlie Brown later on.

I doubt it, the 'real tour' started THIS evening in CAPE TOWN and is pretty much what to expect in the coming months. In general i think that people should try to enjoy the moment instead of concentrating on trying to record the complete concert on their mobile devices.

Exactly. In Atlanta my son wound up recording just Fix You for me. I was so focused that I was even annoyed when the balloons hit me in the face. I just wanted to stare at the guys and sing my heart out and soak it all in. LOL I wish the setlist were long, but I walked away very satisfied.

Cape Town turned yellow last night as English superstars Coldplay rocked the city’s stadium, delighting tens of thousands of fans.

The city’s crowds may have a reputation for being laid back, but Coldplay warmed them up last night with an almost two-hour set of hit songs, fireworks and balloons.

“We’re so happy to be here finally, after 12 years. It took us that long to get a visa, we apologise,” said lead singer Chris Martin as an introduction and an obvious clue he’d read yesterday’s local headlines.

They started their set with a song from Xylo Myloto, their soon-to-be released album, but Martin then launched into Yellow, from debut album Parachutes, which brought them to the world’s attention.

“When the cold wind starts to blow in Cape Town,” was how he started The Scientist. The crowd started to sing along and he had them eating out of his hand.

South African band Parlotones had opened the stadium two hours earlier as the 50 000-strong crowd streamed in steadily and while the crowd response was polite it was non-committal because they were there to see the world’s biggest touring rock act.

People may not take lighters along to concerts any more, but they do take their cellphones and Martin got the 28 000 fans on the stands to start a Mexican light wave.

Fireworks, lasers and balloons abounded, but it was the music the crowd wanted.

The fans at the back of Cape Town Stadium had the best sound, while those in the coveted Golden Circle got close enough to almost touch Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland.

They couldn’t leave without an encore, which included Martin’s take on Amy Winehouse’s Rehab and, of course, the beautiful ballad Fix You. A new hit, Every Tear is a Waterfall, ended the set.

Earlier, the popular Fan Walk from the CBD to the stadium was filled with excited fans – many wearing yellow in honour of the hit song.
Restaurants and bars along the Fan Walk were filled with the sound of people singing Coldplay hits.

Andrea Collins, 28, of Goodwood, was with five friends, all wearing T-shirts that read “Diehard Coldplay Fans”. She said seeing the band live was on her “bucket list” of things to do before she died.

UCT students Susan Tissiman, 22, and Catherine Edward, 21, were wearing T-shirts they had painted themselves.

Isaline Goemaere said she had been given concert tickets as a 21st birthday present from her friend, Taliah Abrams. “As a birthday present it was perfect. They stir emotion and are nostalgic. “We listened to them when they just came out… like every band a 13-year-old needs in a teenage crisis, they spoke to us.”

It wasn’t all plain sailing, though – some frustrated fans complained about traffic volumes and that the sound quality wasn’t up to scratch. But when Martin bent down and kissed the stage after Every Tear is a Waterfall, signalling an end to the concert, gripes were forgotten and elated fans streamed out of the stadium, talking about one of the biggest musical nights of the year. - Cape Argus

ok im finally ready to give my post-mortem from last night. ill keep this as simple as possible as its hard to properly describe such an experience that id been waiting for for over 10 years, it all seemed very surreal and still does.

The Good:

Coldplay! The band were flawless and completely up for it, they looked as it they were absolutely loving it, even guy who shows little emotion was smiling and really into it.

The setlist was brilliant although shorter than a proper touring show. the whole acoustic set at the end of the catwalk was beautiful and i was very happily surprised to hear til kingdom come, so brilliant.

The set up was awesome. The stage with catwalk was better than a b/c stage for me, and the fireworks from the stadium roof were very special. There were also the big balls and lots of beach balls, one of which i managed to take home with me :)

Chris had a smile at the sign which i help up during violet hill which read, if you love me, wont you let me know, he acknowledged my bit of the crowd quite a lot and was very vocal and had a good few lyric changes. (come up to cape town, tell you im sorry, etc)

The Bad:

The crowd was the major disappointment for me. I managed to get pretty much front row, and it was quite lively there, but even there i struggled to get a viva chant going, and most people didnt know lyrics of even big songs. half way through the show i moved further back to the end of the catwalk to get a better view of the whole stage and fireworks which werent visible from front row, and the crowd were actually embarassing. no one knew lyrics, and many people just standing with folded arms. ive got to say though, for the big songs such as viva, scientist, yellow and a few others, the crowd were really good.

The security guards were really pedantic, they wouldnt let me hang a banner over the railings because it was a "security hazard" which is a load of rubbish.

The organisation was pretty poor. the admission process as well as transport arrangements which were terrible.

From what i hear, some parts of the stadium got really bad sound, although it was perfect throughout for me.

I got the attention of miller and hoppy, and asked them both for setlists, but they both said that theres absolutely nothing to give out, which i find hard to believe.

Im sure theres so many things ive left out, but if theres anything anyone is interested in, then just ask and ill respond.

Overall it was an incredible experience which i was privileged to attend. i can finally cross off the most important item on my bucket list, now i need to cross off the second most important item, seeing coldplay again :)

the wave was actually really good, you just cant see it well in the video. maybe its one of those things that will only be properly experienced by those present. it was an awesome moment, and it left everyone with their mouths wide open in awe.

We did the cell phone wave at the Joburg one was well, I was in GC so had a great view of everyone in the stands doing it, and it looked absolutely amazing :)
