Lollapalooza 2011 adds Coldplay, A Perfect Circle to headliners list

This summer will be Lollapalooza’s seventh year in Chicago as a destination festival, yet the three-day music event is celebrating a 20th anniversary.

There haven’t been 20 Lollapaloozas — the tours took a hiatus from 1997 to 2003, and 2004’s was canceled due to low ticket sales before the event was reborn on Chicago’s lakefront the following year. But the website and marketing for the concert package include a “time capsule” with photos and recollections from Lollas past, back to its 1991 founding by Jane’s Addiction leader Perry Farrell as a traveling, multistage festival.

The lineup for Lollapalooza 2011, announced Monday, looks back, too — seeming to make up for those inactive years at the turn of the century. The all-male headliners for the festival, Aug. 5-7 in Grant Park, hark back to that era.

Eminem broke in 1999 with his acclaimed “Slim Shady LP.” Coldplay’s first EPs were out that year, ahead of its smash 2000 debut. Muse, My Morning Jacket and A Perfect Circle each debuted in 1999, while the Foo Fighters were in the middle of their ascendancy, having just lost guitarist Pat Smear (he’s back for the new album and tour).

News of Eminem, the Foo Fighters and Muse leaked in February. Eminem’s top slot throws a spotlight on hip-hop at a festival that has featured rap as a headliner only twice in Chicago, and from the same rapper (Kanye West in 2006 and 2008).

The festival’s daily capacity will remain at 95,000 people, but this year they might have more room to roam. Charlie Jones, a partner in Lollapalooza’s organizers, the Texas-based C3 Presents, told the Sun-Times on Monday that changes to the layout will add several acres to the festival in Chicago’s downtown public park. (The footprint isn’t growing; the festival instead will utilize space it was allocated last year but did not use.) Much of that extra space will be in the softball fields west of Columbus Avenue, which last year was closed to traffic for the festival; Perry’s Stage, a tent for electronic acts curated by Lollapalooza founder and Jane’s Addiction leader Perry Farrell, will move there and double its capacity to about 15,000, Jones said.

“That part is simply responding to the demand,” Jones said. “When we started, Perry’s area was on one of those little tiny shell stages in the north end by the rose gardens. Every year it reaches capacity, and we keep moving it. ... This is going to be the biggest tents you’ve ever seen.”

Other changes will include adjusting the schedule to improve foot traffic in and out of the main stages in Butler Field, which traditionally get jammed in the evenings. Jones said the festival is also adjusting the perimeter and tightening security to avoid a repeat of last year’s rash of fence jumpers.

This will be the second Lollapalooza festival in ’11. In an effort to branch out the brand, C3 Presents launched Lollapalooza Chile early this month, with 57 bands playing a Santiago space much like Grant Park, headlined by the Killers, Kanye West and Thirty Seconds to Mars.

C3 now produces Lollapalooza Chicago, Lollapalooza Chile, the Austin City Limits Festival, and in October they are helping to relaunch the Langerado music festival north of Miami, Fla.

The rest of the Lolla Chicago lineup — 123 bands in all — is the usual smorgasbord of acts snatched from various genres to round out a bill attracting a demographically diverse bunch of ticket buyers.

Then again, the lineup isn’t the draw for some fans. “Early bird” three-day passes ($185) went on sale March 29, with only the top three headliners leaked, and sold out within a few hours. Regular three-day passes, available now at lollapalooza.com, are $215; VIP three-day passes go for $850. Single-day tickets are $90 and will be available June 7.

Lollapalooza headline show announced

Coldplay to perform at Chicago festival in August
http://coldplay.com/images/news_line.png

Good afternoon, we're pleased to report that Coldplay have added a North American date to their summer of festival shows. The band will headline this year's Lollapalooza festival which takes place in Chicago's Grant Park from August 5th-7th. It hasn't yet been announced which particular day Coldplay will perform on (we'll let you know as soon as it's revealed).

Three day passes for the festival, costing $215, are on sale now from the official Lollapalooza website (http://www.lollapalooza.com/tickets/).

For the full list of Coldplay's summer 2011 shows, click here (http://www.coldplay.com/live.php).

AnchormanI am ashamed to say this is my first post in months do to school/ work etc. but... there are a few rumors floating around the interwebs saying Coldplay is possibly headlining Lollapalooza this year

-They have never played lolla
-It's the 20th anniversary
-http://www.lollapalooza.com/timecapsule/ has Coldplay in their timeline (most of the other bands in it have played)
-Coldplay is rumored to be in the U.S sometimes in August.

Your thoughts?

I think that's possible, I heard that Coldplay are going to performing in the US somewhere in August. The Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco is August 12th-14th and the line-up is being announced on Monday, so that may be a possibility too. We will just have to wait and see

I was half hoping CP would be there, then (for the sake of my finances) praying they wouldn't. Well, there went $1000 in the span of five minutes.

If anyone is unaware, hotels in the area fill up fast (few are already sold out). If you'd like to be closer to Grant Park, start booking now. Looks like rates have raised again since last year (think I saw Travelodge wanted over $700 for 2 nights or it could've been Best Western). Congress Plaza is still under $200/night.

I'm extremely glad I booked a hotel at the beginning of the year. 5 nights at Travelodge for $800 for a 3-person deluxe room. (Yeah, we're arriving a bit early to do some sight-seeing before the festival) I didn't book a flight until about a month ago, so I didn't really hit any bargains there, but I can't assume they would have gone down in price.

Basically, everyone from the Muse board had been planning an invasion of this festival for months. Most of them happen to also be Coldplay fans, though, so meeting all my old Muser friends again plus meeting some of you Coldplayers is gonna make this the greatest travel expenditure of my life. :D

Corkus
26-04-2011, 08:06 PM
While I'm not expecting many rarities either, I still haven't heard Trouble or Shiver live, which were performed at the holiday shows and I consider fair game. Really, Parachutes needs more love in general at live shows.

But if they decide to say screw all rules and play Amsterdam, I might drown the crowd in my tears.

Also, I've decided I'm NOT going to camp out on the barrier all day for Coldplay. I'm already doing that for Muse with a bunch of friends, and there's too many acts I want to see at the festival for me to spend 2 of my 3 days not moving on a sweaty barricade. I'll stick it out for the few acts leading up to Coldplay in order to ensure a good spot, but I'll live fine with not being the #1 closest person.

BTW, my predicted day for Coldplay is Saturday. Foo Fighters are heavily rumored for Sunday, while Muse plays Kansas on Saturday so they'll probably go Friday (they move to the west coast after that, so it's logical geographically). Eminem will squeeze in somewhere.

Lore
26-04-2011, 08:15 PM
this is different than the holiday shows, I mean this is not just for coldplay fans so they probably won't get too much attention if they play amsterdam for example (which I'd love to hear anyway since it's one of my fave cp songs :dazzled:). Shiver has better options in my opinion :wacky:

I'm debating on if I want to camp out all day long until Coldplay hits the stage. I saw 3 back to back Coldplay shows in 2009 and was in the first and second rows for all three of them, so I'd love to be that close again but i've never been to Lollapoolza before and would really love to experience it fully and see other bands as well.

You get the drinks, golf carts etc. but if you really want to see coldplay close up I wouldn't buy VIP. Your viewing area is off to the sides of the festival up on a hill. Kind of like this- http://www.flickr.com/photos/7926118@N08/1062076324/

I've stayed there a few times for Lolla. Congress is old, nothing fancy, but definitely not scary and VERY close to Grant Park. I prefer it to the Travelodge, and it's a whole lot cheaper than the Hilton. Definitely recommend checking in as soon as they allow. Waiting in the lines will suck, but it only gets worse if you wait.

Muse have gig on 6th in Kansas City, so maybe Muse on Saturday night.

Coldplay playing on Friday in Austin, so wouldn't be weird for them to do the same in Chicago.

Mike, I haven't been to a festival type concert in ages so I'm not up to speed on how the whole entrance/gate thing works.

Do you think this mean you'll have to wait in line to get your wristband? I was afraid to try and save the extra dough because I was worried that would mean a second line when they opened the gates @ 11:00.

I have never gone early to get my wristband but last year if I remember correctly you just brought the printed pass in line with everyone else and they would give you your three day wristband right at the gate. I think...

Hey, I've been to all but one Lolla at Grant Park. It's pretty cool.
At least in past years, you initially need to enter through the main entrance (head toward the lake and follow the crowds). Here's where you'd swap your printpass ticket for your 3-day wristband or your one-day entry. This is the first year you could receive your wristband in advance. They opened another entrance point further north two years ago, but I'm not sure if its just for wristband entry. Earlier the better; the lines can get long (never too terrible, tho).

Once inside, there are usually volunteers running about handing out maps and programs for the event. There's also a Lollapalooza app (which is super handy). Walk about and check out the grounds, then plan when you want to be at any stage.

Definitely read the rules on what is allowed on the grounds (theyll check through your backpack, purse, etc...). Not a bad idea to bring some Kleenex or a wad of TP (the port-o-potties will run out), and dress as though you'll be outside in the heat with a lot of sweaty beer-drinking-and-spilling, but generally jovial people.

Oh, and make sure you eat; there's always great food on site.

June 7th is the schedule reveal also. This is extremely important for me. When it comes to Coldplay day in particular, I need to know how many other bands I'm interested in seeing on different stages. If there's not many later on, I can chill at the main stage and inch my way forward steadily. But chances are I'm not gonna wait it out on barrier all day. (especially if I'm already doing that another day) I want to be as close as possible, but not at the sacrifice of missing all these other great festival acts.

Corkus
05-06-2011, 04:02 PM
We'll get a better idea as European festival season rolls on and they iron out the setlist, finding a good flow that both works and gets the audience pumped. I think 5 new songs is the very maximum they should go for, just because you can lose a crowd with any further unfamiliarity. I'd be satisfied with 5.

And hey, if they keep closing with ETIAW, that would be one benefit to not camping on barrier all day - the ability to leave before the end of the set more easily. :P
Kidding, of course. I may hate loathe detest abhor despise the song, but I'll learn it enough so I can sing along live.

Hey Chicago folks - I'm thinking of coming to Lollapalooza. It will require a 12 hour bus ride each way, but I have a friend I can stay with in Chicago. My indecision is about the length of time between staking a spot on the frounds and when the concert starts, especially if it is a really hot day. I'm an older fan (57) and my tolerance for heat isn't what it used to be. Also, I would be coming on my own. Can anyone who is going offer any reassurance, and maybe some company during the wait? I need to make a decision before one-day tickets go on sale tomorrow.

EDIT: I've decided against going, mostly due to the heat and humidity factors. THanks for all your recomendations and to those of you who are going - have a great time and say hi to the boys for me. :-)

I have never been to a festival but have waited all day in the sun to be close to the front to see Coldplay two days in a row two years ago. Brings LOTS of sunblock, water, food, etc. Try to bring someone with you so when you have to step away to use the bathroom, they can save your guy's spot. I think when they come on the stage, there will be pushing... I am planning on getting there when doors open so I can be in the front row. People will start staking their spot right after the gates open, but it's usually not that many. Crowd will grow throughout the day by the main stages (it's a loooooong day). I've had a few really nice weather days at Lolla; I've had a slew of 90+ humid days there. Dress for hot and make sure you're fed and hydrated. If you choose to walk the grounds, there are cooling tents, cooling buses, food and drink tents, etc..., so those option are there for you. Pull up some ground maps from 2010 or 2009 (when they expanded the grounds), so you can get an idea of the layout.
Ill be there, so if you go, Ill definitely give a 'hello'.

I love San Francisco, I am moving there in January! I almost went to that concert too lol. My first concert was in 2005 here in Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel. They played a super small venue called the Joint and I was lucky enough to be in the second row :) It was right before X&Y was released and something I will always remember.

oh thats so cool :D i also love San Fran. And i love the Bay Area, wouldnt want to live anywhere else. youll love it.wow , well thats an amazing first concert. i cant even tell you how jelous i am! and the x&y tour was so freakin awesome!! well what i saw on tv:( what an experience to have lived through. may i ask how you were lucky enough to get second row. was it just coldplay karma?:D

i was kinda far from the stage. but i almost didnt get to go cuz the tickets were selling out! so with whatever i got i was happy. and coldplay karma helped me out. i managed to be a couple rows away from the B-stage! and i still cant believe it. thats why im so excited for Lolla, cuz im hoping to have some coldplay karma!and im sitting here with another page on my laptop open to the Lolla site ready to buy my tickets

I just got lucky.. when I got tickets, all that was left was balcony. When I got to the venue I asked if there were any seats closer and I thought the show was completely sold out, but they upgraded me to second row :) So I guess you could call it Coldplay karma! I will always have a special spot in my heart for that show, there were maybe like 2,000 people at that show and it's the smallest venue I have ever seen them in and up until two years ago, that was the closest I had been to the stage.

That is so awesome how close you were to the B-Stage! That's one of the reasons why I love Coldplay.... they want to make sure that all of their fans are included and get to see them. I loved on the X&Y tour when Chris ran through the crowd, because you were not expecting it!

I hear that tickets are going on sale at 10 AM tomorrow central time, 8 AM pacific. I am worried they are gonna sell out, because the tickets for Austin City Limits festival sold out like an hour after they went on sale a few weeks ago for the day Coldplay is playing. Luckily, I was able to get tickets but still... I guess if they sell out, I can do the 3 day pass, but i'd rather not :)

that sounds so cool! that is a small venue! and that definitely is coldplay karma:D do you think its also cuz coldplay was still not as big as they were in VLV cuz i would think a venue like that would completely sell out in three seconds!

yea i know i love them for that, because it shows how much they truly do care about us  haha i loved that and theres a video of when chris is in the back of the crowd and he is singing in my place and he got stuck in the crowd i love that video it makes me laugh everytime!:laugh3:

haha thanks for telling me, i was refreshing the stupid page and nothing happened:P i figured it would be something like that by the second time i refreshed the page:lol: guess i gotta wake up extral early then!! thats what im afraid of, that they will sell out, had a bad experience buying my tickets for my last concert:( i cant buy the 3 day passes they are way too much money for me to spend:cry: im already spending all my college tuition money, so hopefully coldplay karma is on my side!

Turns out I'm not seeing Coldplay this year:
http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2011/06/lollapalooza-schedule-pits-coldplay-vs-muse-eminem-vs-my-morning-jacket-foo-fighters-vs-deadmau5.html

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. Coldplay vs. Muse was my worst nightmare and it came true. I would take every other conflict over it. So incredibly devastated right now I can't express it in words. I wanted to meet you guys, see Coldplay again, rock out to the new songs, etc. But I'd been planning with the Muse fans since literally last October and would be unfair to them. THIS DAY SUCKS SO MUCH.

Aww, why would the festival organizers do that?!? They should know that these bands have mutual fans. They should have "different" bands playing at the same time, not bands that would appeal to the same crowd. I'm sorry.

Although I found this comment from the link amusing: "Chris Martin’s crew should be advertising its forthcoming album, though the first single (the musically unremarkable and lyrically laughable “Every Tear is a Waterfall”) is not a promising start."

Exactly, which is why throwing Eminem against one of the rock headliners would have made perfect sense. Coldplay was ideal for Saturday. Muse and Eminem are required to play their respective days because they have other festivals to attend on other days, but Coldplay has nothing else to play.

I expect Muse to draw numerous Coldplay fans away, and Coldplay will probably do the same with Muse fans. UGH. Plus side is it will make both barriers less competitive.

ok ive had a few minutes so curse the organizers and this line up makes no sense, the logical lineup should have been Muse Friday cause the have Kansas rockson sat and CP to play on saturday but who knows if Coldplay has an engagement or family obligations that we do not know of. this is what it has come down to, Muse and Coldplay have a pretty similar fan base so pick your poison. who do you love more? I have been lucky enough to see Muse a few times but of course I am going for Coldplay, it weeds out the peeps running to the barrier so it could be a good thing, we have to make the best of it. not the ideal situation but I love me my Coldplay and thats where I'll be

Same here. I'm really disappointed because I've never seen Muse and wanted to do so, but the main reason I'm coming to Chicago is to see Coldplay.

This'll be my first time at a festival this size. Can someone give me a quick primer on the protocol for getting up front? Is it simply get to the front of the stage early in the a.m. and stay there all day?

You can go to the will call office the day before and pick up your wristband before. Will save you some pain the day of the festival. :)
(This is exactly why I specified to have the wristband shipped to me directly instead)

Quote form the Muse board:

Also, there are insane amounts of downtime between sets on both stages. We'll have to think of games or something to do on the barrier. Maybe we can make a giant sign to hang from the barrier, something like "YO MUSE, WE MISSED COLDPLAY FOR YOU. MAKE IT GOOD OR WE'LL THROW TOMATOES AT YOU."

I can not believe this is happening either. I am sick. I think I am going to have to pick Muse also for two reasons:

1. CP will be touring again soon
2. Muse is playing songs that they either haven't played in years or aren't playing again. I can't rememebr which.

But then I hear Major Minus going through my head and I feel torn all over again.......

Well ain't this some real mess here!!!! I guess the promoters don't really care that they would put the Grammy Winning Brits Bands against each other. They would have sold more "one day passes" for two nights instead of this. How stupid are they? Or at least have one play before the other... Muse opened for U2 alot so they would have done it, they don't care about stuff like that... even after their own tour was done, they still did opening for U2 this year... really, I just can't believe the scheduling! OK, I have been bummed out all week since I found out about Muse vs. Coldplay. At first I thought I would want to see Muse one more time.... but gave headache to me about this. I have decided I really want to hear new music of Coldplay and share the festival with fellow Coldplayers! :) I feel much better, now I have truly decided to just have fun with Coldplay's craziness. I fly in early morning and hope to checkin at hotel across from park early if possible and try to get up to barrier and campout for this day only... only for Coldplay of course! I bought one of those Crazy Creek cushion chairs just for this!!! And will claim my space as close as possible... hoping to find the other Coldplayers up front!!?!! Yes, I feel happy now that I got Muse out of my head (I saw them 3 times last yr.) Anyone else headed for the barrier?

Well I am going to lolla to see coldplay, but none of my friends will be there because they are muse people. So if you guys want to hang out with a college kid from wisconsin or let me hang with you, that would be great!!

I hope to meet my fellow coldplayers! I will be there at 11 as well. Is it crowded by 11 or do you think we will be able to get a spot in front of the stage? When doors open do you head to the front of the stage? I have never lined up for a concert (I usually have seats) so please forgive my dumb questions -- what do you pack/take with you for the long day? What if you have to head to the bathroom? I'm assuming you lose your spot? Again sorry for my dumb questions :embarrassed:

Those are not dumb questions at all. I have never been to a festival, but I have waited all day in the sun to see Coldplay general admission twice two years ago and got 1st and 2nd row. I don't think it will be that crowded by 11, but it's hard to say. Doors don't even open until 11, but I am not sure if there will be people lined up to get in, so I may get there earlier. There are a lot of other bands playing and I would think the people that get there that early will be Coldplayers! When doors open, I am running towards the stage and camping out there all day.

Some tips on things to take: SUNBLOCK - I got really sunburned last time and it was quite painful, plenty of water and food to eat, it's going to be a long day.. so last time I brought my Ipod and a book to read, but with coldplayers to talk to, you may not need either.

I am going with my best friend, so if you have somebody that can go with you, they can save your spot when you go to use the bathroom. However, I wouldn't advise you go use the bathroom when it gets close to them coming on stage, because it will be very hard to get back to your spot.

It's going to be a lot of fun and I am really looking forward to meeting all you guys!

I think I am wearing my yellow Wembley Coldplaying shirt... you can pick that one out right away. Plus at Wembley we were able to find each other easily with that yellow shirt! :)
And I am WAY OVER 30 also! ;) And if we all find each other up front... it will be easier for us solo people to do bathroom breaks and food. I am bringing Crazy Creek cushion chair and towel to claim my space for the day. Someone on the first page had excellent list of what to bring items.

Lollapalooza 2011

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you a fest n00b? That's ok, Haley has done this many times. Many, MANY times. So, let me try to prevent you from making silly choices while you are on your Muser travels.

AGENTHAL'S ADVICE COLUMN

Don't be stupid, bring a backpack or at least some sort of bag. Bring in two SEALED water bottles, they have refill stations for free water (lines get long though!).

Other things for your pack:
- Sunscreen - no aerosal cans! There are plastic spray-on ones, but I recommend getting cream that's like SPF 80+ and just applying it once in the morning and you're good all day. I always do this and only my scalp burned last year. Hence the next one on this last...
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Towel, blanket, something to sit on (no chairs, but Crazy Creeks are fine); this will get really gross, last year I just brought hotel ones with me each day
- Baby wipes
- Roll of toilet paper (trust me on these last two)
- Cash along with a credit card
- Mini fans are handy, like what they have at Disney world
- SNEAKERS. You're an idiot for wearing flip flops. At least do Tevas are something.
- Poncho. It could rain, did last year.
- Digital camera (not an SLR; you may be able to get it in but it depends if it's worth it for you)
- Also, GOLD BOND. If you ever go to a hot festival, especially Bonnaroo, that is the number 1 thing people will recommend if asked. Chafing, chafing, chafing... IS NO FUN. Unless you are super skinny, if it gets hot, you will wish you had it.

You can't bring in food, but this is the benefit of a backpack. I am always able to easily sneak in crackers and granola bars and such to last me a day at the barrier. There's food in there of course, but it's expensive and you don't always have the time (or aren't nearby)!

Keep in mind, Grant Park is HUGE. If you're planning on running to the barrier, keep in mind it's far from the gate. Will be like a 15 minute walk.

You won't be able to queue at the gate to get in early in the morning, they won't let you. Gates open at 10am I believe, though. You'll hear the Star Wars music.

Can't think of much else to say. It's a blast and I usually try to catch as many acts as possible. There's also lots of cool stuff around, like the hammock areas and the Playstation tent (they usually have free stuff like mats, sunglasses, and I won sidestage passes from them next year!). Feel free to PM me with questions.

"Please don't PM me... airieslady" This information came from Agenthal on Muse board. Thanks Agenthal!

I initially only got the 3 day pass because I was worried that single day tickets would sell out. I love it. I have been thinking about how cool it would be to have t shirts for the show since day one!

Love the shirts, maybe a brighter color. it'd be cool if we could have our Coldplaying names on the back or something.

Maybe yellow shirts and I agree with having our coldplaying names on the back.

I love the shirt... yes, yellow is good color... it worked really well at Wembley...we could find each other no problem.

But wit yellow shirts I dnt think the running man would stand out :\ . But the shirt design looks great :)

Also when we made the Wembley shirts, we could not use Coldplay only Coldplaying.com same with Muse shirts, could only use website name not band name. ;)
If I remember right we used Spreadshirt or Cafepress.

Hum... so maybe just take off Coldplay on the front? Yeah, I agree that the running man would not stand out with yellow shirts :/ I do like the color of the shirt that was posted, it goes together well.

I'm sure we'd be able to find each other with gray shirts, hopefully we'll all be up front anyway! Orrrr we could run with Coldplay's new colorful theme and get multicolored shirts.

If it's going to be hot maybe we should pick a really light and airy color. Coldplay seem to be using a pastel color palette this time around, so maybe something along those lines?
