Good evening (or morning, if you're down under). We're pleased to report that Coldplay will headline this year's Splendour In The Grass (http://www.splendourinthegrass.com/) festival in Queensland, Australia.

Tickets will cost $390 (inc gst) Event + $120 (inc gst) Camping + booking fees, which gains entry to the festival for 3 days, from Friday 29 July to Sunday 31 July (the actual date of Coldplay's show is yet to be announced). They go on sale at 9am AEST on Thursday 5 May through Moshtix (http://www.moshtix.com.au/default.aspx?) or by phone on 1300 GET TIX (438 849).

ps - The festival takes its name from a line in a William Wordsworth poem, which you can read here (http://www.bartleby.com/101/536.html).

Thought some Aussies might be interested in this..

Don't know if it's true or not.. I have my doubts.

Daily SPA has discovered the first confirmed acts for the Splendour In The Grass line-up, with a reformed Pulp set to be one of the event’s headliners. It is also understood that festival fodder Coldplay and Elbow are on the bill.

Along with these three names, in a recent interview with a Street Press Australia magazine, Noah & The Whale were asked if the rumours that they were playing the festival were true. “I couldn’t possibly comment, but we do aim to come out to Australia very soon, so keep your eyes peeled,” the interview subject said.

Pulp announced that they would be reforming for 2011 dates in November last year. The Jarvis Cocker fronted band have already been confirmed to play Scotland’s T In The Park Festival as well as Spain’s Primavera.

Coldplay, meanwhile are currently recording, with the new album expected for the Australian spring. It is likely a new single will be released prior to their Splendour visit.

Elbow had revealed their intentions to tour this July in interviews and then a TV advertisement, while other heavily rumoured acts include The Vaccines, who’ve been reported across a range of media and The Kills.http://s3.amazonaws.com/musicnetwork/assets/5083/splendour_montage2011_645_normal.jpg

Splendour rumours: Kanye West, Coldplay, Pulp and more

With promoters dropping the official decree next Wednesday (April 13), the Splendour in the Grass rumour mill is already running rampant online.

Overnight, the SPA website reported three “confirmed” acts for the festival including Coldplay, Elbow and the recently reunited Pulp. While they don’t cite specific sources, TMN’s own reinforced this is definitely on the money. Coldplay are in the neighbourhood performing at Japan’s Fuji Rock the same weekend and as Fasterlouder noted, Elbow’s TV ads have already mentioned the band will be here in July.

But the monster rumour doing the rounds is that hip hop superstar Kanye West will be gracing Splendour with his presence this year in a one-off show. While the idea of West rocking the Woodfordia amphitheatre might seem a little incongruous at first, industry sources have told TMN it’s all but officially announced.

Other acts that have confirmed themselves include The Kills (via an interview with Pedestrian TV), Friendly Fires (via an interview with NZ site Under The Radar) The Vaccines (via Adelaide street press Rip It Up) and Cornershop (via Twitter).

Other bands playing Fuji Rock include Arctic Monkeys, Mogwai, Wilco, Big Audio Dynamite and Funeral Party so you can no doubt expect some of those names to drop Down Under for a visit. Arctic Monkeys played Splendour in 2007 and have a new album Suck It And See out in June. Worth betting on.

Incidentally, Japan's Summersonic festival takes place two weeks later and features Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes, Public Image Limited, Suede, Mars Volta, (recently reformed) Death From Above 1979 and Cage The Elephant among others.

Splendour takes place at Woodfordia, near Woodford in south-east Queensland and Friday July 29 to Sunday July 31.

The music industry's an incestuous place, my friend. Just because I don't book for Splendour itself doesn't mean I don't book for venues in the rest of the country that receive a lot (i.e. most) of the bands when they move around to other cities..
That's all I'll say. Take it or leave it :)

But as amazing as this sounds, I don't think it's worth it, you know the flights and apparently tickets cost like $350 or something.

AS MUCH as I want to go, I'll probably wait for them to come to Melbourne.

2010 TICKET PRICES

Event-only ticket (Camping NOT included):

* Event-only ticket - $350 (inc gst) + $10.20 booking fees (inc gst) = $360.20 online or $362.20 for phone bookings (additional $2 fee).

* Carbon Offset Event-only ticket - $353 (inc gst) + $10.25 booking fees (inc gst) = $363.25 onlineor $365.25 for phone bookings (addition $2 fee).

Event and camping ticket:

* Event and camping ticket - $450 (inc gst) + $11.80 booking fees (inc gst) = $461.80 online or $463.80 for phone bookings (additional $2 fee).

* Carbon Offset Event and Camping ticket - $453 (inc gst) + $11.85 booking fees (inc gst) = $464.85 online or$466.85 for phone bookings (additional $2 fee).

Not cheap! it's the second most expensive festival in the world after Fuji Rock in Japan. if they do manage to secure coldplay and kanye or even just one of them, the prices will go up as both of them will demand high appearance fees (i know you guys probably like to think coldplay are humble and not greedy but when you're stadium trotters its hard not to be like that)

Cobalt

last year was 2 hours. i'm expecting the same this year. basically you log on and wait in line for your turn to buy ( in a virtual sense)

givelovesolong

It is really, really pricey, but I'm saving my bucks.

From what I've read, two hours sounds about right for ticket sales to exhaust. Every year since Slendour began, tickets have sold faster and faster.

my chances of going have gone from about 10% last night to about 40% now. won't be booking flights until i have full confirmation from friends. really hoping coldplay doesnt clash with any of my other favourite acts on the line up (which for the record nothing compared to last years)

and as disgusted as i am with the ticket prices i think i'll end up getting the camping ticket because its only $120 extra which is less than what 4 nights accommodation and travel to the site will cost me.

I'm still tossing up whether it's worth it, or whether to wait til they do their album tour.
I don't care what the Oracle says, if they're doing festival shows without playing any new material, I'll be sad..especially after $500 to get there etc.

I thought they'd be playing if not a full set, at least close to. I thought the main acts usually took the stage at around 10PM and were done sometime near 12AM, if I'm not mistaken?

deaths_friend
13-04-2011, 09:56 AM
i'm very curious to see what they decide to play at splendour. if they want to please the predominantly triple j crowd it will have to be nothing past 2002 material. if they do they're normal show i guess it will be a mix of hits plus the odd new song.

not quite. headliners are splendour typically do an 80min set maybe a tad longer. which i guess isn't that much shorter than a normal cp concert.

Ah, right. Thank you. For an hour and twenty minutes, that will be around 14+ songs, I'd assume. The concerts during the "Twisted Logic Tour" clocked in at around 17 songs over 1.5 hours, and for their last tour, pretty sure time on stage was almost 2 hours.

Suppose we'll see soon enough.

I'd rather pay $~150 to see Coldplay at their own show next year than $500 to see them and only three other bands I like at a festival.
It's not 100% confirmed they'll be returning next year but it'd be very surprising if they're not back before the end of next year. It doesn't take -that- long to tour the rest of the world.

I don't think a new album release this year means a definite tour of Australia in 2012 -- I'm more thinking they'll be back here in 2013; between travelling the world over and the mini-breaks they'll take, I think that would be a more accurate assumption.

HandyAndy136

Nonetheless, an Australian tour is pretty much guaranteed. Unless the PM bans them or something :P

And I'm just gonna wait for them to come nearer to where I live... who knows, maybe they'll headline Big Day Out next year or something.

Last time Coldplay were in my home state, I went to all of their shows, and I kind of promised myself that the next time they come out to Australia, I'll follow them around the country, then the time after that, go see them internationally.

So that would be great, if it worked out you were able to see them while you're over there.

Hah, yep -- can completely understand that. They'd really only recently left Melbourne before the "Sound Relief" show and I was so, so wanting to go, but it just wasn't going to work out. I was pretty devastated; having them so accessible -- in a way, I guess -- and not wanting to miss that.

*sigh* July can't come fast enough, and neither can this new album.

Australia's Splendour in the Grass tickets on sale May 5

Music fans Down Under, mark your calendars for May 5, when tickets go on sale for Australia's innovatively green Splendour in the Grass at Byron Bay. This non-corporate, small-capacity festival is unfurling its flag July 29-31, featuring Kanye West, Coldplay and 79 other acts on three stages.

In both 2009 and 2010, the event sold out in a few hours, and this year the same is expected, with tickets going on sale May 9 at 9 a.m. EST. Tickets range from AUD$401.50 to AUD$525.60 (around €290 to €380).

Even by the standards of the southern hemisphere's obsession with music festivals, Splendour in the Grass, now in its 11th year, gets the nod in all the important areas - from line-up, location and atmosphere through to originality and eco-friendliness. Plus the event incorporates big name acts with an arts program, along with a marketplace, workshops, spa treatments, and a global food fair to keep attendees entertained.

The Splendour festival combines a relatively small capacity (only 15,000 tickets every year, in comparison to the notorious Big Day Out with upwards of 50,000) with a collection of headline acts that come for the festival and stay for the weekend.

Other acts included in the lineup are Jane's Addiction, The Hives, The Kills, Cut Copy, James Blake, Thievery Corporation, and DJ Shadow.

Tickets are available through Moshtix: http://www.moshtix.com.au

Hi all,

I thought I'd post this just in case no one knew about it yet. Yesterday I was one of the many that could not buy tickets due to the bank failures... MUCH STRESS!
Happiness that eventually I did get my tickets. Usually sells out in 5hrs, this year there are still tickets left after more than 24hrs because so many people were not able to access their money...

Westpac's air-con blunder takes a blender to Splendour

Splendour in the Grass tickets are still available - thanks to Westpac's meltdown

For the past five years, tickets to the Splendour in the Grass music festival have sold out within hours of going on sale, despite what organisers admit were some pretty unreliable systems to handle those sales. Last year's 32,000 tickets went in about five hours, and this year – with Moshtix handling ticket sales and new computer systems in place to cope with the volume – organisers expected to set a new record. But they hadn't counted on Westpac.

Shortly before Splendour tickets went on sale at 9am yesterday, word came through that the bank was experiencing difficulties. Air-conditioning units in its computer rooms had failed, and the system was in metaphorical meltdown. That was bad news for any would-be ticket buyers with Westpac accounts, but it got worse.

Moshtix relies on a Westpac-provided back end, which meant that processing ticket purchases would be impossible even for customers of financial institutions other than Westpac. So the ticketing agency, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, tried to bring online a back-up system, using facilities provided by the Commonwealth Bank. With just a couple of hours to make that happen, it was never going to be a smooth operation.
Advertisement: Story continues below

According to Splendour co-promoter Paul Piticco, "sales crawled on through the day", at a fraction of the normal speed and volume. By 6pm last night, he estimated that as many as 8000 tickets remained unsold.

At 9pm yesterday, ticket sales were suspended. At 9am today, they re-opened. Instead of setting a new ticket sales record, Pittico was hoping merely to alert all those would-be buyers who had given up in frustration – and in the likely belief that they'd been beaten to the tickets by others – that tickets were still available.

With a line-up that includes Coldplay and Kanye West in their only Australian shows, Jane's Addiction, Pulp and Devendra Banhardt amongst many others over three days in July, the festival – originally of Byron Bay, NSW, but more recently of Woodfordia, Queensland – is one of the year's biggest events for fans of indie music.

Thanks to Westpac, those fans now have one last, and unexpected, chance to grab a piece of the action.

hello!

anyone knows if i can still find a hotel nearby at this point of time? and will there be any transport to fetch us back to the hotel?

they will announce bus info soon. it might not get you directly to where you want but should help you get part of the way there. if i were you i would try and find camping or caravan facilities that are near the site. but check out the website. it is really useful and informative.

We are staying at the Hyatt Regency in Coolum, which is a one hour drive away. We have a rental car and a car park pass.

you can add at least another 1.5hrs to that trip time just for getting out of the site each night. but i guess if you start your day late then getting back late shouldnt be an issue.

i'm very happy to be camping on site. got myself a $60 fold up 3 man tent for me and my mate. we'll probably get hypothermia sleeping in there but oh well its all about the music :P

it's getting close!! i just wish they would announce the timetable earlier so i know which bands i might need to familiarise myself with to keep myself occupied.

Splendour releases playing times (Coldplay - Sunday 31st July: 10.45pm - 12am)

http://splendourinthegrass.com/assets/2011/SITG2011_PlayingTimes_MainStages_DL-sml.pdf (pdf download)

SPLENDOUR in the Grass organisers have released the playing times for the main stages one month out from the three-day festival. It comes as no surprise that international headliners Kanye West, Coldplay and Jane’s Addiction will be playing the closing shows at the Amphitheatre, which holds 10,000 punters.

In an interesting combination, Modest Mouse and The Hives will play before Kanye West on the Friday night. Jane’s Addiction will be supported by fellow rockers The Mars Volta and The Living End, and the Kaiser Chiefs and Pulp will help Coldplay close the festival on the Sunday night.

Gracing the GW McLennan Tent on Friday are Boy and Bear, Gotye and Mogwai, followed by Seeker Lover Keeper, Gomez and Regina Spektor on Saturday and The Panics and Devendra Banhart on Sunday. The high-energy Mix Up Tent will feature DJ sets in between each main act.

Aussie festival favourites Bluejuice and DJ Shadow play Mix Up on Friday night, followed by Architecture in Helsinki and PNAU on Saturday and Friendly Fires, Cut Copy and Bliss N Eso on Sunday night.

http://www.noosanews.com.au/story/2011/06/30/splendour-releases-playing-times/

busybeeburns
30-06-2011, 04:26 PM
Friday night has the strongest bevy of performers, with Modest Mouse leading into showstoppers the Hives and then Kanye West. And earlier in the day there's a shocking overlap between Warpaint, James Blake and the Kills (pictured), while later on Mogwai and DJ Shadow will suffer up against the Hives and Kanye. Boo.

Saturday night is the weakest of the three evenings, with the Mars Volta set to clear the amphitheatre (mark our words), leaving Architecture in Helsinki to claim victory in the Mix Up tent. The Living End and Jane's Addiction will then attempt to rebuild the evening on the Amphitheatre stage, though Pnau will be hard to beat back in the dance tent.

Sunday is UK invasion day, with the Amphitheatre stage having Elbow followed by Kaiser Chiefs, Pulp and Coldplay to close the thing out. If guitars and pasty ex-pats aren't your thing, the Mix Up tent should once again kill it with the final trio of Friendly Fires, Cut Copy and Bliss n Eso hard to beat.

Well technically you don't "line up". But there will be a D-section at the front and if that is full, there is no getting in. I recommend you get in there earlier rather than later. Like myself, I am getting in there at 6pm to watch Elbow, Kaisers, Pulp then CP all in a row! Going to be an exhausting last night but totally worth it. I did it at BDO last year for Muse so it's worth it getting in early!

Yeah, I get that festivals don't actually require any lining up, my comment was more in relation to not knowing whether audiences will be switched out after some acts to make room for other patrons. I was sure I read about this happening at another festival Coldplay played fairly recently, but I can't remember for the life of me which one it was. I was curious as to whether Splendor employs the same type of rotation and figure the first two days will make it clear whether or not to expect it.

Of course, my plan was always to spend the entire day at the main stage in anticipation for Coldplay's performance, but if this turned out to be the case, some other planning may have to be involved if I was looking to get front row. :)

Hey, not sure if you guys are aware, but Triple J (alternative rock station we have over here in Aust.) will be broadcasting Splendour acts this weekend as the festival develops. I'm not sure when they'll be broadcasting the guys, since I don't know when they're on, but I'm guessing it's pretty much guaranteed that Coldplay will be broadcast, since they're probably the biggest act at the festival.
So, might someone not going to the festival (and will be home whichever night Coldplay are performing) be able to record the gig? It'd be a nice treat for whoever goes to the shows (ie not me) :)

Yep!
I restarted browser, I even restarted the whole computer, no luck.
But honestly I'm way too lazy to start changing all the settings and stuff to watch it. It's not meant to be and I'm doing fine ... :)

Will do some washing instead ;)

Maybe someone is able to record it and we have it in the Multimedia section some time :)
