To put in your avatar you must click on the link above for "Profile". There, scroll down to the ery bottom of the page and you will see a place for the URL of your particular avatar's location.
But, remember, the image is supposed to be 80x80 or less in dimension.

As for smilies, it never hurts to bring your own to a party...
