Coldplay to headline Glastonbury Festival
February 15, 2011 10:17 am
Band confirmed for Saturday night Pyramid slot
http://coldplay.com/uploads/glasto.jpg
Good morning. It's just been confirmed on the Glastonbury Festival website (http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/) that Coldplay will headline the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night at this year's festival, on June 25th.
"Coldplay have played such a major part in the Festival over the last 10 years or so," said Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis. "As their popularity grew around the world I was so proud of them. This is the triumphant return of a band that everyone here feels part of. They're one of the greatest phenomena to grow from these fields."
This will be the band's first appearance at the legendary festival since 2005. Tickets for the Festival sold out months ago, but a limited resale of cancelled tickets is expected in April (though you do need to be registered (http://www.glastonburyregistration.co.uk/) in order to buy tickets).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's their first pilgrimage to Worthy Farm since 2005 - when they went down a storm.
Glasto guru MICHAEL EAVIS and his event organisers have been chasing CHRIS MARTIN and the lads to make a return - as Bizarre revealed in October.
And this week the rockers finally put pen to paper on the deal.
One massive outfit who will not be performing in Pilton are the ROLLING STONES.
Bash bosses had tabled a huge offer for MICK JAGGER's gang to make their festival debut at Glasto, which kicks off on June 22.
But after mulling over the deal for the past three months, the veterans have turned down the chance.
A source said: "Getting the Stones to Glastonbury has been high on Michael Eavis's list of priorities for a long time. He came really really close this time round.
"He came up with an incredibly tempting offer and Mick and the rest of the band were considering it closely but they ultimately decided to turn it down."
Still, Coldplay aren't too much of a shonky replacement. Their back catalogue is filled with anthems perfect for the Pyramid Stage.
And they're bound to get a massive welcome. UK crowds don't get much bigger than the 200,000 or so who squeeze into the Somerset site for the huge bash.

Coldplay To Headline Glastonbury 2011
But The Rolling Stones have reportedly said no…
13:08, Saturday, 5 February 2011
Coldplay (http://www.mtv.co.uk/artists/coldplay) will headline the Saturday night at this year’s Glastonbury Festival (http://www.mtv.co.uk/events/glastonbury-festival-0).
A new report states that the band signed contracts this week which will see them headline the Pyramid Stage for the first time since 2005.
But The Rolling Stones (http://www.mtv.co.uk/artists/the-rolling-stones) have reportedly turned down an offer to play Worthy Farm, despite festival boss Michael Eavis negotiating with their management for over three months.
"Getting the Stones to Glastonbury has been high on Michael Eavis' list of priorities for a long time. He came really, really close this time round,” a source revealed to The Sun. “He came up with an incredibly tempting offer and Mick and the rest of the band were considering it closely but they ultimately decided to turn it down."
U2 (http://www.mtv.co.uk/artists/u2) look likely to headline on the Friday night, after they were forced to pull out of last year’s festival when Bono (http://www.mtv.co.uk/artists/bono) hurt his back, while for Sunday night, Eavis is said to be finalising a deal with "an American artist that I've been wanting for yonks and yonks".
Glastonbury 2011 takes place on 24-26 June 24-26.

Also lol'ing at the people all of a sudden scrambling trying to get Glasto tickets just because Coldplay is going to be there. This show is pretty much guaranteed to have an incredible lineup every year, with or without Coldplay.

They did it in 2002 with AROBTTH. If I'm not mistaken, it was one of the first times they played Clocks (and other songs as well).

Living in the States I know very little about Glastonbury. As far as the three headliners go is there a bigger sense of honor based on what night you are playing? For example, is closing out sunday night a bigger "event" then the closing out friday? Is saturday the big night to close? I guess what Im asking is what is the TOP top spot?
Cyan Kat
05-02-2011, 06:51 PM

Yeah Saturday is really the biggest slot and I'd take Friday over Sunday as well. Although I did think Coldplay would be doing Sunday after they did Friday and Saturday in 2002 and 2005 respectively.
But if Rolling Stones ain't doing it, who is?? Do Radiohead fans know when an album is coming out from them? Is Prince back in the rumours? I still wouldn't be surprised if it's the Rolling Stones. The S*n is full of bullshit 24/7 so I don't think I should even take this Coldplay rumour seriously.

Radiohead is a huge possibility still, but with no plans whatsoever, it's hard to speculate. An album has been expected from them for some time now, and even if they're planning a summer release, they could certainly do the same as Coldplay in 2002 and premiere the songs on the pyramid stage. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I'd put my money on Radiohead closing sunday.

Where The Streets Have All The Single Yellow Ladies
It must almost be that time of year when we spend just under a week on the phone to the Glastonbury Festival hotline, trying to get tickets for an event that we don't really want to go to and watch bands that we simply haven't heard of, all the while wading around in mud that consists of fake ecstasy tablets, discarded tofu burgers, vomit, paper cups and underwear.
However, generic pretty girl we're in love with is going, so it'll all be worth it in the end. Even if we do catch a rare strand of cholera from the lakes of urine splashed on our tent.

Beyoncé confirms Glastonbury slot
Beyoncé has confirmed that she will headline this year's Glastonbury Festival.
The singer was recently rumoured to be topping the bill alongside U2 and Coldplay at the event at Pilton Farm, Somerset.
Billboard confirms that Beyoncé will perform a 90-minute headline set on June 26, the final day of the festival.
"This really is the biggest festival in the world and I cannot wait to perform there," Beyoncé said in a statement.
"Everyone who attends is really appreciative of music and is in such a good mood that entire weekend. I'm pumped just thinking about that huge audience and soaking up their energy."
The Libertines have been rumoured to play another reunion gig on the Other Stage during the summer festival.

I think they usually take a year "off" every 5 years or so anyway to let the grass get healthy again, so the farm is due for that next year anyway (aside from the Olympics issue, of course, so it's good timing in that sense).
The 5-year gap year would have been this year (2011), but it's been swapped with the 2012 festival due to the Olympics using all the portaloos

Coldplay announced as Saturday night headliners
http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/data/image/cpcolour.jpg
We're very pleased to confirm that Coldplay will be the Saturday night Pyramid Stage headliners at this year's Glastonbury Festival.
This will be the world-conquering group's first Glastonbury show since their triumphant 2005 performance. In 1999, Coldplay made their Glastonbury debut in the New Bands Tent, weeks after signing their record deal. Just three years later, they made their first appearance as Pyramid Stage headliners, shortly before the release of their Rush Of Blood To The Head album propelled them to global success. We can't wait to welcome them back again.
Tickets for Glastonbury 2011 have Sold Out, but a limited resale of cancelled tickets is expected in April. For more information, click here

U2, Coldplay - TV dictates the Glastonbury line-up
Johnny Dee: Champers and supermodels have changed the face of Glastonbury, but it still beats other festivals
Earlier this week U2 confirmed that they would be performing on the Friday night at this year's Glastonbury Festival. The announcement completed the list of Pyramid Stage headliners which also include Coldplay - who have headlined the festival twice before - and Beyonce, who will follow in her husband Jay-Z's steps when she closes the festival on Sunday.
We won't learn the full line-up for a couple of months but so far, so yawn as already its apparent that Glastonbury's days as a gathering of outsiders, misfits and rebels are far behind it.
Glastonbury is now a mainstream festival with a running order that's dictated by the primetime TV audience rather than the people who actually attend. And if you are lucky enough to get there, the huge runways taken up by the BBC cameras leave you in no doubt who the artists are performing to.
For most of its history, Worthy Farm has been home to hippies, travellers and drop-outs; it was so left-leaning it called itself the Glastonbury CND Festival for nearly a decade and so carefree in its organisation that David Bowie's 1971 headline set began at 5am. In the early days the only reason you wouldn't bunk in for nothing would be because you'd miss out on a free pint of milk.
Today Glastonbury is home to ever increasing numbers of upper middle-class students, supermodels and people who work in the marketing departments of mobile phone companies. The car parks are full of Land Rovers, wicker picnic baskets are filled with Veuve Clicquot and the Wellington boots of choice are Hunter limited editions.
If a band goes so much as a second over its allotted stage time, plugs will be pulled; and a wall more impenetrable than the one that divided Berlin surrounds the site.
Meanwhile the acts headlining this corporate playground are ageing tax-dodgers, a pompous public school boy and his anonymous friends (pop quiz: name more than one member of Coldplay) and a mega-rich pop star who sees nothing wrong in entertaining Colonel Gaddafi's son for a fee of $2m. Right on.
All music events are expensive these days - as a nation we've strangely allowed promoters not only to overcharge for music but to levy booking fees on top - but the cost of Glastonbury seems gigantic.
In 1981 a Glastonbury ticket cost £8 (approximately six times the price of a paperback book then). In 2011 it's £200 (20 times the price of today's most costly paperback). If a Glastonbury ticket had simply gone up in line with inflation - according to the Office of National Statistics Retail price Index figures - it would cost £26. But of course, as Muatsim Gaddafi found out, Beyonce doesn't come cheap.
Even as recently as 2007, Glastonbury Festival was still part of the annual spiritual hippie trail. Increasingly these original Glastonbury tribes have become a sideshow, with people trudging to the far corners of the festival for the novelty of seeing some wizened old druid emerging naked from a teepee.
Now, the hippies have been edged out and the only teepees on the site exist under the banner of Boutique Camping, temporary homes to those willing to pay more for three nights in a wig-wam than most families spend on their annual summer holiday. Circling these upmarket arrangements another layer of camping privilege exists just beyond the festival boundary, where VIP visitors pay thousands of pounds to stay in luxury yurts.
Glastonbury may cling to its non-corporate reputation (it is the only major British festival without sponsorship) but nowhere will you find a finer example of raw capitalism at work. In 2009, just 45 minutes after Michael Jackson died, I wandered through the main market area and was amazed to see a stall selling 'I Was At Glastonbury When Jacko Died' T-shirts.
Despite all this, despite the fact that it has without doubt sold out to "the man" - that mythical beast cool baby boomers feared more than any other - and that the lunatic fringe who helped build its reputation are long gone, there is still something incredibly special and, yes, magical about Glastonbury.
In reality it doesn't matter who plays there - so much is going on and there are so many stages that everyone can curate their own private festival. And despite its soaring price, it still represents far better value than a Premiership football match or a West End play. And no matter how much you dislike U2 or feel uneasy about the hippie cleansing, little can change the atmosphere.
I used to think that headlining Glastonbury was an artist's career pinnacle - I'm not so sure if it is any more. It's rare that a band will play just one festival (indeed Coldplay are already scheduled for Glasgow's T In The Park) and a Glastonbury date is usually preceded by a show in Hyde Park or Wembley.
But for the audience, for all its faults, Glastonbury has become the Olympics of music fandom - but without the random drug testing. It's still the festival that beats all others and if you've only ever seen it on telly you really don't know the half of it.

Seriously?
Not true, the organisers allow "over-run" time into the swap-over periods but it's not the best thing to overrun your set time.
As for the TV cameras, out of 20 stages only 5 have cameras (Pyramid, Other, John-Peel, West Holts & BBC Introducing), and as for people buying tickets for the line-up, remember it sold out it's tickets last October where no-one was announced to play (compare that to the other major festivals which puts out the line-up before tickets go on sale).

Glastonbury Festival 2011 has sold out
http://www.virtualfestivals.com/lib/dam/53000/4/52848.jpg
Glastonbury Festival 2011 resale tickets were snapped up in under two hours this morning (Sunday) as fans eager to see the likes of U2, Coldplay and Beyonce tried desperately to buy unwanted and unsold passes from the original ticket sale.
Sources suggested that a record number of festival-goers had registered to buy tickets in the resale after Beyonce was confirmed to headline the Sunday (26 June).
“Apologies to those of you who didn't get a ticket,” tweeted the festival on their GlastoFest Twitter account, “demand hugely outstripped supply, so unfortunately some people had to miss out.”
The sale wasn’t without its problems, with some people reportedly receiving internal server errors from the SEE Tickets webpage and others getting “kicked out” of the buying process after entering their details.
Following festival-only tickets selling out at 9.45am, fans scrambled to buy ticket and coach travel packages to the event, but encountered more issues with the site only allowing users to purchase one seat on coaches.
Once this was resolved, all the packages were snapped up by 10.40am.
“All tickets have gone - thanks for your patience. See you down here!” tweeted co-organiser Emily Eavis.
In an unusual move, festival chiefs announced the full line-up last week, with Primal Scream, Don McLean, B. B. King, Pendulum and loads more set to play.

It is really interesting that there is a longer gap between the last festivals and Glasto.
On the one hand of course fpr the album and the last actions to finish it...on the other hand there is space to change the setlist or show in a way...
...also it was very interesting that the band visit the place again to plan their show (remember the pic of Phil?).
So it wouldn't be a big surprise if they will surprise us! ;=)

Glastonbury Revellers Urged 'Don't Take Loo Roll' - Pick up Free Roll at Festival
GLASTONBURY, England, June 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
REVELLERS getting ready to pack their rucksacks for Glastonbury are being urged NOT to take their own LOO ROLL - as they will be handed out free at the festival. Although toilet rolls are on hand at the 700 portable loos at the legendary festival, many of the 190,000 music fans turn up with at least one roll - just in case their cubicle doesn't have any paper left.
But this year, in a bid to increase the festival's eco-credentials, organisers Michael Eavis has teamed-up with toilet tissue makers Nouvelle to provide revellers with free rolls. As part of the plans for the 'Greenest Glastonbury ever' - the festival is aiming to recycle at least 60 per cent of the waste it produces, compared to last year's 49 per cent.
As well as the free loo rolls - which are made with 100 per cent recycled papers - the festival is rewarding people who arrive on bikes by giving them a special camping area and discount vouchers at the food stalls. A solar powered cow shed with 1,000 panels will provide enough electricity to meet the demand of 40 households - and will help power the huge stage sets of Beyonce, U2 and Coldplay.
A massive recycling barn will also allow revellers to recycle dump all of their recyclable materials - including bottles, cans and packaging - and an army of 80 volunteers will separate it to be recycled. Nouvelle is providing more than 100,000 loo rolls and has promised that there will be 'enough for everyone' - meaning festival-goers don't have to turn up with extra rolls stashed in their rucksacks.
Michael Eavis said today (Tue): "We're encouraging people to be as green as possible at this year's festival. We have put many new measures in to help us achieve this, not least by inviting Nouvelle on board as recycling partner to the festival, to give away free Nouvelle Soft recycled loo roll to festival goers. Nouvelle is providing one hundred thousand free loo rolls and our message is very simple - there will be more than enough for everyone, and more importantly, it will be the right kind of loo roll."
Glastonbury regular Dave Jarman, 36, said: "For the past 10 years I've always taken at least two loo rolls with me just in case, but this year I can leave them at home and maybe pack another few pairs of socks instead of loo roll."
The festival takes place over four nights from June 23 until June 26 - so runs in tandem with Recycle Week 2011.

From The Metro:
Try as I might, Eavis won’t spill the beans on whether Jay-Z will make a guest appearance alongside his wife or whether Gwyneth Paltrow will join Chris Martin on stage when Coldplay perform. He does, however, confirm that Beyoncé will spend the whole weekend on site at the festival while some of the crew speculate that recently reformed Britpop favourites Pulp might make a surprise appearance.

with better news, here's something I've received from BBC person in charge of syndicating performance video:
We will have performance video and photos of Coldplay at the festival that we can make available to external sites to embed. The content will be available for 30 days and will be available outside the UK. We will have full sets available on our website and a single track ( to be chosen by the band) that we can make available on other sites. We hope to get the single track up as soon as possible after the band come off stage. We will also have a whole load of performance photos.
sounds promising!

Set times have been announced for Glastonbury 2011
Glastonbury 2011 full stage times revealed - Coldplay start at 10.15pm BST on Saturday
Starting on the Friday at Worthy Farm, the Pyramid Stage will be headlined by Irish rockers U2 at 10pm, supported by former Smiths frontman Morrissey and Biffy Clyro.
Over on the Other Stage, the headline slot is taken by Primal Scream, with Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes also appearing towards the top of the bill. Saturday sees Manchester-based indie band Elbow and Paolo Nutini supporting Coldplay, who will take to the Pyramid Stage at 10.15pm.
White Lies and Friendly Fires will provide the Saturday support for the Chemical Brothers on the Other Stage. To close the festival, which takes a break next year to allow the farmland to recover, Emily Eavis and the organising committee have juxtaposed drum and bass-rock fusion outfit Pendulum with former Destiny's Child singer Beyonce.
Rock fans will probably want to head over to the Other Stage, which closes with Eels and Kaiser Chiefs supporting Queens of the Stone Age. Half of the tickets for Glastonbury 2011 were sold within the first two hours and the full allocation was sold out in four.
Full listings and set times can be found on the festival website.

Coldplay's Chris Martin helped convince Beyoncé to play Glastonbury
Fans trudging off to see Beyoncé at Glastonbury this weekend can thank Coldplay's Chris Martin for her appearance.
http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2011/06/20/article-1308601810626-0CA6FEFF00000578-669050_636x300.jpg
It’s emerged the singer was reluctant to sign up to the show over fears of a public backlash. Only some sweet-talking from Mr Martin, 34, secured her booking at Worthy Farm in Somerset, we’re told.
The US superstar was apparently wary of showing up following the flak her husband, Jay-Z, 41, experienced before his Glasto appearance.
The rapper topped the bill in 2008, despite famously being deemed an inappropriate booking by then Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher.
Now Martin is personally making sure his wife Gwyneth Paltrow’s bezzie mate is not subjected to the same music snobbery and receives a warm reception, according to co-organiser Emily Eavis.
‘Chris is a bit wary of people knowing he’s been so involved,’ Emily told Radio Times. ‘I don’t know why because it’s actually cool. Chris is as loyal as they come – he’ll do anything for Glastonbury. He’s really an unlikely frontman. Most people are a bit more all-consumed with their own thing.’
Beyoncé plans to throw all of her energy into her Sunday night appearance after planning her summer around it.
‘Luckily, we spoke to Beyoncé before she planned her tour this year, so she managed to put Glastonbury in her schedule, then build a European tour around it,’ Emily added.
But the 31-year-old said she and her father, 75-year-old Michael Eavis, were used to the toughest of battles to nail their showstoppers.
‘There’s so much bartering and hustle with the booking agents. A lot of agents are not that keen on Glastonbury,’ she said. ‘They just don’t get it because it doesn’t pay enough money.’
Coldplay will warm up the Pyramid stage for Beyoncé when they headline on Saturday.

BBC's plans for Glastonbury on radio and on tv detailed below. Brief listings of BBC TV's Glastonbury schedule (courtesy of musicweek.com) included. Full live performance of Coldplay on BBC 2 from 9.45pm. U2 cuts to BBC 4 on Friday to make way for Newsnight at 10.30pm. Highlights of Coldplay's performance broadcast on BBC 4 on Sunday evening as well. Plenty of fantastic acts to get your teeth into!
6 Music, Radio 1 and Radio 2 are joining together for a “triple-cast” across the three networks to launch the BBC’s Glastonbury coverage this year.
On Thursday June 23, the day the festival kicks off, the three stations are teaming up for a two-hour show called Introducing Glastonbury, in which Steve Lamacq, Jo Whiley and Zane Lowe will preview the Beeb’s coverage of Glastonbury 2011.
This coverage takes place across the three radio stations – 6 Music is again the BBC’s “radio home” for Glastonbury – as well as on 1Xtra, Radio 4, TV stations BBC Two, Three and Four, via four Red Button streams and online at bbc.co.uk/Glastonbury.
Coverage includes live headline sets, festival highlights, interviews, acoustic sets, festival news updates and what is described as “a voyage into the weird and wonderful far reaches of the festival” courtesy of Music Week Award-winning station 6 Music.
Online, the BBC’s dedicated website will offer live video streaming of performances, as well as guides to the festival from BBC DJs, something the Corporation pioneered at the recent Radio 1 Big Weekend.
Extended highlights of more than 60 performances will then be able to watch on-demand following the event.
Coverage takes place across the Glastonbury weekend – June 23 to 26 – with highlights running the following week, including a special edition of Radio 4's science/comedy show The Infinite Monkey Cage, recorded in the festival's Cabaret Marquee and broadcast on Monday 27.
6 Music editor Paul Rodgers said, “6 Music's coverage of Glastonbury has gone from strength to strength over the past few years and I'm very proud of what we've been able to achieve from a small studio in a very big field. This year will be no exception and I know that we'll be able to bring the best of the festival to our listeners."

Good afternoon. We're pleased to report that you'll be able to experience Coldplay's headline set on Glastonbury's Pyarmid Stage on Saturday (June 25th) wherever in the world you are.
In the UK, the show - which begins at 10.15pm UK time - will be broadcast live on TV, on BBC2 and BBC HD. The show will also be shown live on Germany's ZDF Kultur channel and Brazil's Multishow. Meanwhile, in America, the show will make history by becoming the first Glastonbury concert to be broadcast in full on US television, when it airs on VH1 and Palladia, at 10pm ET/PT.
A portion of the show will also be broadcast live on the radio - and you can listen online, wherever you are. Head to BBC Radio 2 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_radio_two) or BBC 6 Music (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/bbc_6music) to hear it.
We're very pleased that you'll all be able to be a part of what we hope will be a special evening.

ZDF-Kultur zeigt aber eigentlich nur von 20-24 Uhr. Das heißt 45min Coldplay.

--> special evening. More than anytime before I believe that there will be huge surprises. But I don't know what and I'm sure that there aren't many changes in the setlist.

Hmm... Das wäre dumm  Kann mir aber irgendwie nicht vorstellen, dass dann plötzlich mittendrin Schluss ist. Mal Abwarten. Sonst können wir ja mal 'ne Mail schreiben und fragen :nice:
Sorry guys, we're just discussing the schedule for the broadcast in Germany ;)

That's not the point. My German isn't really good and now I have to translate it to understand it. That's annoying.

There was no need for you to translate it as we were just discussing if the whole performance will be broadcasted in Germany or only half of it ;) Apparently the broadcast over here ends at 11pm BST which would be kinda strange

Well I didn't know that before translating it.
