Thom Yorke was great live... I'm really hoping that Radiohead will do some touring this summer

If the Black Keys cancel I wont feel as bad about missing it.

I still think last years lineup was kinda better.

Oh well.

I've wanted to go to Coachella for years (it's only 3 hours from me) but haven't been able to because of money or class/work schedule conflicts. Tonight I get my weekend schedule for my cinema class. If nothing conflicts on that weekend, I may very well go to Coachella at long last, especially since I finally have adequate funds and some appreciated financial support (which I really needed since they no longer sell single-day passes). Fingers crossed. Friday and Sunday definitely have acts I want to see, but the Saturday line-up looks phenomenal.

I honestly don't think there's a single band I want to see. :| Such a fail. And I was really looking forward to going this year. :shifty:

Gah, how I wish I could go to Coachella! :bomb:

20-01-2011, 05:07 AM
I think it's good, but not great. There's no crazy one off appearances or band reunions. Duran Duran is the closest it comes. I've seen Arcade Fire and Kings of Leon this past year, and I suspect they will be touring every year or two for the next 10. The lesser acts have all played local clubs and smaller venues around town. I want to go, but if I miss it, I don't feel like I'm missing some rare opportunity.

Where's the Smiths reunion or Pearl Jam with Neil Young?

deaths_friend
20-01-2011, 05:20 AM
my take on it

Friday - good (5 bands i would love to see, 6 others interested in)
saturday - good (love 6, 5 interested)
sunday - fucking amazing (8 amazing acts there that would happily pay full price to see)

i think on the first two days the headliners are so-so but the ace stuff is in the smaller print. but sunday is amazing top to bottom.

I'm trying to go. Even though I live in England, I happen to be in the US at the time, but around NYC. I've worked out that the whole thing would cost a lot, but within budget. I'm desperately trying to find someone to go with in the next 24 hours before passes go onsale because my budget is for two people and I'm so tired of doing awesome stuff like this by myself. I guess my criteria is that I have to know you, though, because we'd be rooming and driving together and all that.

Something tells me it's just not going to work out in the end. Does Coachella tend to sell out like Glasto etc?

Not at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure last year was the first year they've ever completely sold out, and I believe it took a while for that to happen. Though I'm not sure how long it took (and it's something I should find out since I don't plan on purchasing until I have full confidence I'm going).

You'reWelcome
20-01-2011, 05:52 PM
Yeah, it usually doesn't sellout. I'm waiting for other festival lineups before I make the trip to the west coast.

Oh, that's great to know, because I just found someone to go with and she's getting the passes tomorrow

I just booked a less-than-desirable hotel, though...40 minutes away, because that's the closest that's still available :freak:

Corkus
20-01-2011, 08:39 PM
Oh cripes, that's seriously the closest hotel still available? I know my friend was looking into hotels in the Palm Springs area because we thought that'd be far enough without being overpriced or already booked but still has a shuttle. I'd better tell my buddies to get on that quickly.

Megalomania

The hotel I got is in Palm Springs, which is evidently about a 30-40 minute drive from the festival grounds accoring to Google :dead:. But I searched every other town on like every major hotel website and found nothing under $300/night in Indio, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Palm Desert, or Cathedral City. If you can afford it there are closeby options, but it really is insane--passes don't even go onsale until tomorrow and everything remotely affordable and convenient is gone!

But you just reminded me that a shuttle to Palm Springs exists and I just discovered its drop-off is 1.5 miles from my hotel, which is walkable! WHOO!

cmon as if they ever had a chance of securing daft punk twice in 4yrs. but it would've been awesome if they were playing, would mean my chances of seeing them live were higher.

I think Coachella is better than Glasto in general.
The thing about Coachella is that it's always a solid lineup. Even the acts in the smallest writing are amazing. I don't think it's the same with Glastonbury.

ViVA Child
28-01-2011, 05:06 AM
mmmmm i dissagree.

at least with this years lineup (aside from the big/medium script acts)

i havent been to either yet so i cant say or compare, Glasto attracts me more though.

Coachella is in palm springs california yes?.... so ...blah.

have you been to both?

glastonbury would hardly rank in the top 5 in the world in terms of festival line ups. festivals like rock wercther, roskilde, coachella and others provide far superior line ups year in year out. but a great line up has never been the reason why glasto is held in such high esteem.

glastonbury to many music fans around is like a spiritual musical pilgrimage. its all about being part of that massive tent city with 150 000 for 4 days. its the history, both mythical and factual. its the one festival that even non-music fans know about.

glastonbury is great cos its fucking glastonbury!

I'm talking about the lineup, not really the festival itself?

deaths_friend
28-01-2011, 05:21 AM
a lot depends on your taste in music. glastonbury has fairly minimal heavy music and urban music (which is slowly changing) whereas other big fests dont tend to restrict themselves in that way which makes them more appealing to some people and less to others.

oh well from what ive heard the lineup is only half of what makes glasto awesome

im lucky im in california so once i have the money for coachella it would just a hour or so drive to get there.

I guess Glastonbury doubles as an experience as well as a music festival. Coachella not so much.

xxKels
28-01-2011, 09:42 AM
I beg to differ, Eddie.
Coachella is no different an "experience" than Glasto, just a different environment and mindset. It's all about what each person makes it, feels it
for themselves- highly individual. This being true to all venues- large or small, crap set out by a woodshed in the field , to the most elite, lush private venue.:)
Hope your birthday was a great experience for you as well.

Hey guys, thought I'd pop in from the hotel early in the morning. First day was great! Interpol and especially the Black Keys were the highlights so far, though I also got to see some good sets from Tame Impala and others, including Crystal Castles' blinding strobe show. We unfortunately skipped Robyn because we both wanted to rest for today's insane lineup as well as beat douchey KoL traffic.

See ya guys! :)

yeah the first 20mins of the TDCC set wasn't perfect for me either kept on stopping but the rest was very enjoyable. i'm not a fan or anything but their music is very easy on the ears and they're a lot of fun live.

not big on Cage the elephant so i might just do something else for 45mins then come back in time for Foals.

The Final Track
17-04-2011, 01:25 AM
Yeah, feel the same way about TDCC. Finished watching Freelance Whales first.
Can't decide between Foals and Broken Social Scene. Leaning towards Foals, though.

Foals

The Kills
Mumford/Interpol
Elbow

ARCADE FIRE!!

will probably watch Interpol over M&S because i haven't seen much of them live since their 4th album came out. and heres to hoping that what happened with AF happens with Kanye tomorrow and he is added to the webcast. not that tomorrows youtube lineup isn't amazing enough already

really excited about the Interpol encore! just had a sneak peak had the setlist and they seem to be doing a great spread of all 4 albums in their limited time. i think it is an absolute insult that they were put before the black keys on the main stage. i know the black keys last album was brilliant and interpols wasnt really (i liked it) but interpol have an incredibly well respected and admired back catalogue that the black keys could never match. if it was up to me they would be after kings of leon as well lol.

OH. MY. GOD.

There is no way to humanly describe the amazingness of Arcade Fire's show - especially the synched light up balloons - without actually having been there. Theatrics-wise it was unlike anything I had ever seen (suck it, Yellow balloons), and performance-wise it was completely stellar the whole way through. Intervention still gets me every damn time.

Oh yeah, Conor freaking Oberst was standing in front of us during Arcade Fire. I smiled at him but he just turned away, but whatever.

I'll fill you guys in on the rest of my day later.

they've put a TBA next to 10-30pm which is exactly when Kanye is set to headline. rumours are that rihanna and katy perry will join him on stage. i really hope he doesn't waste 5mins of his set to perform that crap song with katy perry.

Everyone who has never seen The National live before needs to see them immediately, and everyone who HAS seen them needs to see them again. They are the absolute last band I thought I'd use the ludicrous term "face-melting" for, and yet they were easily the best non-headline act I saw all weekend.

Oh yeah, The Strokes were pretty awesome, but I was also ridiculously tired by that point. Must do this festival again, though.

Well, I know The National are playing Hollywood Bowl later this year, and I'm gonna see if there's any way I can get a good ticket that's not too unreasonable. (I generally hate Hollywood Bowl, though.)

"Squalor Victoria" was a worthy candidate for the best song of the entire weekend from anybody (but competition is stiff), though "Mr. November" was pretty damn awesome both for getting the whole crowd going and because Matt Berninger very nearly crowd surfed over me.

I was there. It was the best weekend of my life. However, the act I was really there for was The Strokes, and I almost died three times. It was a full-on riot scene due to the band two acts before them and Kanye after them, which made it a bittersweet ending to the weekend. I was really disappointed I wasn't at the front for The Strokes (I'd waited 8 hours up there and decided to get pulled just because it was so dangerous), but I was lucky enough not to sustain any serious injuries but a whole host of people were taken to the hospital :\.

That was my exact situation for Arcade Fire. I camped out in front on Saturday until Broken Social Scene ended, then suddenly with no explanation, everyone got extremely rowdy and you couldn't move or breathe, so we moved back behind the second barricade for safety purposes and were fine from that point. I've never had that problem at a standard concert, though festival atmospheres are different.

But yes, The Strokes were awesome. Pleasantly surprised by the amount of "Is This It?" material. Getting out of there after Strokes and before Kanye was ridiculous, though. For every person leaving The Strokes, there were like 5 people entering for Kanye, so it was extremely difficult to push my way back out.

Glad you had fun too, though! :)

I understand that's just the way festivals are, and I was up front for the headliners on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday was a WHOLE DIFFERENT kettle of fish. The band Death From Above 1979 absolutely ruined everything--people were trying to start a mosh pit, crowd surfing, mauling people smaller than them to get closer...I saw grown men much, much larger than me sobbing. So many unconscious people were pulled out, and I even saw two people bleeding from the head. I actually felt pretty in control of my safety the whole time, somehow, but I decided to get pulled after DFA got off because I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy my favorite band to the fullest in that scene.

And GOD, getting out after Kanye...I was a mile away, SO far from the stage, and it was still a stampede after The Strokes got off. I watched Kanye from so far away I would see his mouth move on the screen before the sound was able to reach me from how far away I was.

Here's to hoping there aren't any hardcore acts before The Strokes and Coldplay at Oxegen in July...I know both acts are popular and Strokes fans can get rowdy, but I know I can handle Coldplay crowds easily. I just want to make sure they don't book a fricking heavy metal or hardcore act before them that I have to worry about again.

Oh dear...my friend and I split up briefly because he wanted to see Death From Above and I wanted to see The National, and he said it was the craziest crowd all weekend, and not in a good way. I swiftly bolted back to the main stage at the end of Duran Duran's set, and since a lot of people in that crowd were age 30+ and sorta just relaxing and soaking in the nostalgia, it was pretty easy creeping ahead of a lot of them.

But seriously, I was deep enough into the audience that I was getting suffocated trying to penetrate that incoming Kanye crowd.

That's a real shame that you were disappointed. I remember when I saw them last year, my friend and I were at the barrier and it was actually ok because we had something to push against that wasn't another person! But SO many other people (mostly tiny skinny girls) got pulled out because it was too intense. And that festival wasn't nearly as big as Coachella! There was pretty much no choice BUT to walk out on Kanye if you valued your life and limbs. I'm serious, it was close to being a full-scale riot. At least for DFA 3 acts before him, it was basically a riot, not just "a bit of madness."

Black Keys were my favorite set on Friday. I'd seen them once before, but they brought their A-game to Coachella and were even better than the last time. Some people were complaining that their sound was too low since Brandon Flowers' set was bleeding into it at the same time, but I guess I was in a good enough spot to hear well.
wow you guys walked OUT on kanye!! you really did miss one of the all time great festival sets. who else was on then?
PJ Harvey overlapped with the first few songs of Kanye, and I'd honestly rather see PJ Harvey. She went on before The Strokes finished so I missed like the first 4 songs, but I was still happy to catch "Written on the Forehead" - my favorite off the new album - plus a bunch of oldies.

I bet the crowd calmed down by the time he took the stage, but it was dangerous as all hell shortly before he came on (and all day up to his set) because of people absolutely adamant about seeing him up close and being ready to mow down anyone in their path to get a glimpse of King Kanye.
